True Grit are good movies, would definitely read the book. If I had to recommend a book it would be Three Musketeers, cuz it takes place during an underrated point in time, the story is surprisingly good and the intrigue is the best I’ve read so far. Theres five books, but you can read the first book by itself, or even just the first two. But the last three were technically supposed to be the same story, called Ten Years Later, but broken up in three.
Not an author but I’m an aspiring one 😂

Anyone else think that George looks good? Like he’s lost weight? I don’t care about shape or a number on the scale, but he looks visibly healthier. Obesity is deadly at his age. And if he is focusing on his health, it means he gets more time to spend with his family and friends, and maybe he will have enough time to finish ASOIAF. He looks good!!

I have been to several Worldcons over the years, funny in 2000 in Chicago I spoke to George RR Martin who had been walking the dealers room, this is well before ASOIF become super popular, and he was such a nice man, and laid back as well. It's ironic that all the authors you interviewed were not around back then, only George, but I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Jordan and many others at these cons. Each generation has new favorites.

I knew it. Jack Vance is probably my favortie author and Martin's work is heavily inspired by his. He even curated a short story anthology on Vance's Dying Earth series.
So with that, here's two more fantasy centered recommendations from Vance:
    -Tales of Dying Earth
A far-future Earth where the sun is about to die, along with the remnants of the human race. Mutants and new lifeforms have taken over and a lot of humanity's fragmented leadership are Clarke-tech magicians. It is from this series that D&D got its magic system.
    -Lyonesse trilogy
An alternate-history early dark ages sort of prequel to the Arthurian myth, steeped in European folklore and mythology. It is from this that Martin took a lot of inspiration for ASoIaF, with its short story-like adventuring across the (now sunken) Elder Isles.

Funny for me seeing the GRRM recommendation. I was in a bookstore on Sunday and was holding Demon Princes volume one by Jack Vance, but instead went with a Dying Earth omnibus by Jack Vance.

Wow you spoke with two of the faces in the Mount Rushmore of Modern Fantasy writers imo Martin and Abercrombie ( the other two being Sanderson and Erikson ) , that’s wild!

Joe Abercrombie has such a fun and friendly personality, it's hard to imagine that he writes grimdark when meeting him.
