  • Basic Script: Hey RUclips, today we’re looking at BT’s Broadband Extender Flex 600 kit. The power line kit is a simple way of connecting two Ethernet devices together via your homes internal power cables. For example if your wireless router is upstairs and you wish to connect a device that requires a cabled connection but is a long way away from the hub, you would need to run a long Ethernet cable through your house which could be impractical and untidy. Instead you could use a powerline kit to connect them using your internal power cables. Setting them up couldn’t be easier; simply plug one of the devices into a socket near your hub. Then use the provided CAT5 cable to connect the home plug to your router - we are using the BT Home Hub 4 and are going to connect it to port 1. Now plug in the other home plug, near to the device that you would like to connect - we are using the BT YouView + Box. Again, use the provided CAT5 cable to connect the two devices. And that’s all there is to it, the devices can now communicate as if they were connected using a single Ethernet cable. As you can see there are three status lights on the front of the device, indicating power, connection and data transfer. When your device is not on, the powerline kit will go into a standby mode but will always be ready to turn back on again when you are using your device.
If you are having trouble pairing your home plugs, there is a link button on top of the device which will allow the devices to discover each other. This is pass through kit meaning that you won’t lose a socket when using these devices, you can still use the plug as normal to connect your router or any other device.
The speed will depend on a number of factors, especially the distance of your internal wiring. This particular kit is capable of up to 600Mbps however a Gigabit capable kit is available.
Having used these home plugs for several months, I can certainly say they are reliable. Performance has been great so far and is certainly adequate for streaming HD video content via the BT YouView+ box. I could also see these devices being attractive to gamers for use with consoles or even for use with devices that have Wi-Fi built in but need a faster or more reliable connection.
Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next video.

Had a couple of these lying around from a while back. Tried using them again and they are absolutely guff for streaming media from my NAS. Choppy video playback etc. No problem on a standard wired connection with the same PC.

I use the Flex 600 kit to connect from my Virgin Hub 3 router to my Virgin Tivo box, 14M apart, with little success. It would randomly drop out sometime during the day. I went right back to square one. Check for continuity between the sockets you intend to use. (A long length of wire, 2 earth pins taken from plugs and a meter needed here). If there is no continuity, forget it. The Flex 600 will not work in this situation. If there is continuity take the 2 Flex extenders to an unused double 13 amp socket. Switch on both sockets. Insert both extenders in the sockets. Simultaneously press and hold both Link buttons until all lights on the extenders are off (15 secs approx), and release the Link buttons. This has reset the extenders to the factory default. Then simultaneously press and hold both Link buttons for 6 seconds to prepare the extenders for communication with each other. Then simultaneously press Link buttons for 1 second to join the network. Then follow the instructions that come with the extenders. My advice is not to use the the through connection for another 13 Amp device, depending upon what type of device you connect it may interfere with the signals to and from the extenders. All is now working OK. Will report back tomorrow if it drops out.

I need two extenders. Like a powerline one or something. I need them to both have the passthrough so as downstairs i only have one plug socket and the same as in my room. So i need the first one to connect to my broadband box and then pair and share the internet with the second which i connect my xbox to almost like a wired connection. Any help?

Great vid but do you know if you can use 3 of them at once to use on 2 different devices at once?

Update. The system as set up dropped out sometime between setup and 14:30. Although checks claimed that the extenders were still talking to each other, the system was unable to connect with the Virgin Hub 3. Pressing the Link buttons did not help. It is possible that the failure may be down to my needing 3.7M of E-Net cable to connect my Hub to it's extender (I am actually using 4M of Cat5 cable). That does not explain why it should have been OK an hour after installation, but non- functioning at 14:30. However, if the device you want to connect to your router has WiFi capability, all is not lost. I have installed a WiFi extender/booster called "XtraBoost" in a socket halfway, approx, between my router and my Tivo box. (Obviously you need to disconnect the E-Net cable from your device to use this). At night everything goes off. In the morning I switch on, in sequence, Hub3, XtraBoost and Tivo box which currently reports connection at 82% signal strength & 130Mbps. That's from an input speed of 100Mbps. Checked at any time it reports 70% to 80% and usually over 100Mbps. XtraBoost can easily be purchased online at around £40. Mine came from Lithuania and arrived within a week. Flex 600 is around £50. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Does the data light go on at all times when they are plugged in or only when you are using a device attached to the receiver end?

Are these BT adapters only compatible with BT routers, or are they compatible with other providers as well, such as a Sky router?
I already have some and no longer want to have BT as my provider, so naturally, this is a concern.

    • @George-bj5wr
      @George-bj5wr 4 года назад +1

Yes, they work with every provider as you connect them to your router via ethernet cable. they are the same as the netgear ones, just rebranded

I have a plug with two ethernet ports each. Is there any way i can connect two cables from my router into the extender for a more stable connection?

Unfortunately two cables won't give you a more stable connection.

I usually plug my Ethernet into my Xbox and that gives it WiFi, however the data light isn’t turning on and I’m not getting any internet from it onto my Xbox. Does anyone know how this can be fixed?

Ive got the 500 one. After around a year, one of them died. It was just dead when i checked, plugged it back in and there was a flashing power light, tried again and now its in some sort of boot loop where it will turn on, 2 seconds later its off. And it will just repeat. Guess i need to find some new ones.

Cuz the mini connectors are too far away from eachover. They dont connect to eachover through the main power lines as thats impossible. Im an electrician, so I know this. They connect wirelessly.

  • @raadkurdi7883

Dont very nice for BT take advantage of the fact that their customers do not understand the basics of electricity. How about being honest and letting them know how your BT connectors ACTUALLY connect.

These thing cost a ton of money and don't work. Do not waste your money. The TV buffers all the time and just drops out making watching TV impossible. Using the PC to surf the net is a waste of time too. I cannot get onto my online banking as the just hangs then times out. Using pads with the WiFi works but I have to screenshot from the pad and email myself the photo so I can print it. BT customer service is non exinstant and won't send an engineer to fix it.

Free radio interference with every pack!!! These devices can obliterate radio reception and should not be allowed 🤔
