    I successfully removed and replaced the plugs on my 2008 FWD XC90 3.2. I am amazed the car still ran. I woulkd like to upload a photo of the plugs in case you want to post them as a warning. Happily, the color is perfect but the electrode is all but gone, if evenly worn. The coils are great and the car is frisky and goes up hills now. Huge expense saved from starting at square one. All round terrific car of ten years use. Thanks again.

    I will be using this video. I bought a 2008 xc90 with 150k miles from my mother and it has the ORGINAL spark plugs, injectors, and the oil was 10k miles overdue! Thankfully the car seems to run fine (a little hesitation but I'm assuming that's due to plugs + injectors being original). I got the oil changed promptly and will be doing every service the car needs, including the dreaded 150k service.

      Volvo uses nickel plating to prevent the need for anti-size on their brand of spark plugs. The torque value should be on the package if you purchase Volvo brand spark plugs. Typically, 25Nm is the value specified.
      When I worked in industry, we had to add 10% to the torque value when anti-seize was used.

I have a 5/8 spark plug socket from AutoZone that is built with a six extension built in to the socket. worked like a champ a little die electric grease on the plug tip and anti sieze on the threads. Also tool your recommendation of labeling the coils. Cleaned the coil head and labeled with a silver sharpie to contrast color. Thanks for the video. Normal wear for 108K but since I had the new ones I used them. I labeled the removed ones for future assessment.

    Question: I have a misfire on cyl 6, code P0306 and Im about to replace spark plugs as first step to resolve. Noticed you labelled the far left cylinder as #6. Is that actually #6 according to mfr specs or is that just the way you did it for ID purposes only?

    • @A_Renaissance_Man
      @A_Renaissance_Man  Год назад +3

      Yes, the video looks like I mislabeled the plugs and the correct order is; 1 through 6 being left to right as you are standing in front of the car looking into the engine bay. Number 1 is by the belts and number 6 is by the transmission.
      Thank you for pointing that out and I will be more careful.

    • @tckearns8468

      Vid was helpful in replacing the plugs. Thank you. I did not disconnect the negative cable on the battery before starting. I mention that because post-plug change, I now had a P0206 error, Cyl 6 A circuit. So with that I went ahead and replaced ignition coil 6 only. The code remained. From this point forward, I have been disconnecting the battery before working on it. (Oh, I also changed the engine air filter and added injector cleaner to the fuel tank.) Cleared the code, and most recently have swapped coils 5 and 6. Same P0206 code remains. Now I'm feeling out of DIY steps.

    You didn't mention in the video whether the gap on the new NGK spark plugs has to set or not? Is this still necessary on modern cars? I am using Bosch plugs and was wondering if they need the gap set before installation.

    • @A_Renaissance_Man
      @A_Renaissance_Man  7 лет назад +3

      Thank you for asking as I did not talk about the gap. Now-a-days that is no longer necessary as the spark plug are pre gaped to the correct setting. I have checked them from time-to-time but have yet to find them needing adjustment. One of the many things that is not longer needed to do like valve adjustments, points, and condenser.

    • @stephencannon3140

      Auto Zone sells a spark plug socket that has a rubber boot, magnet and extension built into the socket. 5/8 Deep for my 08 XC90, 2014 Ford Taurus ShO and 2015 Expedition. Yes the OEM plugs will probably say FOMOCO if never changed. I replaced my 08 XC90 at about 110K and although high mileage they looked like normal wear and consistent across all cylinders. The added benefit is you don’t have to worry about the extension coming off the spark plug and falling down the plug well. A situation like that could result in the electrode tip breaking in the well and possibly getting sucked into the cylinder causing foreign object damage (FOD). The extension has a small ball joint to allow a limited movement of the extension for hard to reach angles......ie. aft bank (Firewall side) of a V6/V8 engine. Worst case scenario is the plug well extremely deep and extension may need another extension to ratchet but I have gotten away without the 2nd extension on twos won’t of the three vehicles. Rear two cylinders (3and6) needed another extension to assist with angle.

    My compliments to you on the spark plug video. This is the first time I have seen one of your videos, and I subscribed.
    Is there any chance that you are familiar with the big V6 in a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor? I have a ticking noise that is very noticeable & irritating when I first start it up, but gets quieter after warming up. I just bought the vehicle and have put about 5,000 miles on it (it has 170,000 total), and despite the obnoxious tick it runs great. When first starting up, it sounds similar to the noise you hear when a solid lifter is way out of adjustment and a rocker arm is way too loose by comparison.
    I have read that this problem is not uncommon with this particular engine, but there are many different opinions about where the noise is coming from & how to go about fixing it.
    Can you shed any light on this for me ? I am about to hit the road on a very long trip, and I really don't want to be worrying about having something let go & have a hole in my hood & parts scattered all over the highway out in the middle of Montana somewhere, if you know what I mean. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    • @A_Renaissance_Man
      @A_Renaissance_Man  2 года назад

      Thank you for your nice comment. Since I do not know if you are going to do the work and try to save the labor cost, or if you just want to feel good about the shop diagnosing the problem correctly without firing the parts cannon at the vehicle, I would say, pay a trusted shop to diagnose the problem and then decide.
      I have seen both a simple fix like a loose coil as well as the labor intensive cost nightmare of a valve lifter. For a mechanic that is not a problem but for a consumer the book time is a bit much.
      I would not think it is the transmission and the valve lifter are very distinct. More of a Ticking Sound. Very easy to pin down.

Here we go: "I don't know why Kyle Stewart would go to a sushi restaurant, because sushi is great for Japanese people... Kyle Stewart would only eat Schnitzel or Takoyaki(ironically Japanese) if Kyle Stewart went aftermarket... but Kyle Stewart just order Ikea meatballs online."
      The point is, Volvo is NOT so Swedish anymore long ago. Nowadays, everything is made in China(not a good sign, we will pay for the consequences sooner or later)!

    I'm confused. I have been looking on the online forums and can't get a strait answer about gap size. I called the Volvo dealership and was told ( Sorry, we are not allowed to tell you the gap size, but you can always buy a set of Volvo plugs ) LOL !!!!! I know it's a .028 or the .044 gap for the 3.2l engine ???????

    • @A_Renaissance_Man
      @A_Renaissance_Man  4 года назад

      Well, I am not going to be much help. Genuine Volvo plugs are pregapped for turbo 0.044" and seperately for non turbo 0.028." NGK plug's gap are labled on the side of the box. For the past 20 years or so, I have not ever found a plug to be out of spec, out of the box or from a Volvo package. For the 3 or 4 pronged plugs, a visual inspection to make sure the electrodes are in the same plane as the center post is all I check for. Good Luck and I recommend NGK or Genuine Volvo plugs that were checked against your VIN.

    • @logmeindog
      @logmeindog 3 года назад +1

      The reason you won't find a one-size-fits-all answer is because it depends on the spark plug design! On a traditional spark plug, you have a thick (1.5mm-2mm) center electrode and one (or more) thick ground electrode(s). These have a gap of 0.28 and the spec is set by the engine manufacturer (with coordination with the coil manufacturers). Over the production years of the 3.2L, new style spark plugs have become available and were used at the factory. These are either platinum tipped or more likely iridium tipped plugs. These are basically gapped and spec'd by the plug manufacture because their center electrode and ground electrode design and size vary by spark plug manufacturer and spark plug model. Newer iridiums have a ~0.4mm- 0.6mm center electrode and a grounding electrode with an impregnated platinum pad. These are generally gapped at the spark plug factory at 0.39mm to 0.44mm. Even more advanced are the plugs that are essentially the same as the above iridium design but have another center electrode (either platinum or iridium) welded to the ground. They are referred to as Pin-to-Pin or Tip-to-Tip. Finely pointed electrodes require less energy for spark formation, thus have larger gaps.
      TLDR: Look up the correct spark gap on spark plug spec website, using the spark plug model number. Quality Iridium tip-to-tip plugs never need adjusting because their gap surfaces never wear. Regular iridium plugs might need adjustment over time but that's usually because their ground wears away and needs replacing anyway. DON'T adjust however because iridium surfaces are fairly brittle, physical characteristics are critical, and pin alignment is critical. DON'T use a metal brush to clean iridium or platinum plugs. Treat old fashioned spark plugs as such and manually gap at 0.28.
