I paid $1350.00 at a Maaco in Mountain View CA to paint my 71 Plymouth Satellite .The color was butterscotch,I already had all the plastic trim taken off , and 95% of the small dings filled in , they did a fantastic job, they baked the car after they painted it , they sprayed the inner fender/ engine bay .. This paint job still looks great ,it was painted in 2004 !

The main differentiator between ANY paint job is the 'prep' and how much they disassemble or take off the car. If you go to one of those places it's best to stick with the same color you have, which is usually good advice anyway unless you have a shell.

I started as a detailer at Maaco for 6 months, started painting for them with no knowledge what so ever, trained for 3 days with a veteran painter. I’ve been painting cars ever since. I have several videos of my paint jobs I had done at Maaco. They can have a bad name but if you get a painter that cares it goes a long ways.

I had a muscle car painted by Maaco back in the late 1990's. I talked to the owner of the shop before I had them do it. He could tell I wanted a good job done on the car and he assured me they would do a great job on it and if I wasn't happy he would redo it. The car turned out great. I still have it and it has won numerous trophies over the years at car shows.

Around 1992 I had Maaco put paint on a 1951 Chevy pickup truck I had. I had already done all of he body work, and had a failed attempt with Acrylic Enamel. I had never shot it before and had orange peel everywhere. I bought a cheap paint job, but probably because it was a classic vehicle, they actually did a spectacular job. When I went to get it, they had it in a fenced in grass area in front of their shop, sort of like an advertisement for them. The work was fantastic, and it was a $300 paint job back then, I think the cheapest they offered. They may have done a better job on it for their own reasons, but I have never regretted having them paint that truck. It was beautiful.

Good video. I was a Maaco dealer with 32 stores in the Southeast. In my stores, we did not stock any enamel paint. I found it easier to deal with and more cost effective to use urethane only. With the volume buying I was doing, my suppliers gave great prices on paint material. Axalta was our brand. I found that quality among Maaco dealers is totally up to the culture established by the leaders in a particular store. Unfortunately not all take enough pride in their work and the whole brand suffers for it.

And before my macco days I used to paint Big rigs and garbage trucks!! And I was really fast at laying down the paint and I was always the first one there and the last one to leave because some bodymen would finish their job at the end of the day and I would paint it so they could put it back together in the morning!!! 😢 And in the summer months we had sweep week where used car dealerships would get there cars painted and I believe that 17 car painted in one day was the most I did!! And I remember having the raise my arm so the sweat would run down my suit and not on the hood of a car when I was painting the hood of a car!!! I sweated so much that when I pulled my paint sleeve of my suit sweat would run down my shoes 😢and that was a hard job and in was worse in the summer because of the heat and oven next to the spray Booth!!

I absolutely hate clearcoat. I work in an auto restoration shop. I'm a mechanic, I don't do bodywork, paint, interior, stuff like that. They have others that do that. I have seen a LOT of 1960s/1970s cars with original paint, it may have been a bit faded, but could be brought back with just some polishing. Newer cars with clearcoat, the clearcoat burns off in 3-4 years, and cannot be polished out, the car has to be repainted. Metallic paints are also bad to fade in spots, and can't be brought back by polishing/buffing. Combine metallic paint with clearcoat, and you have a disaster. My 1993 tan colored (non metallic, non clearcoat) Chevy truck paint still looks like new after polishing. My metallic light blue with clearcoat 2006 Grand Marquis was only 3 years old when I bought it, and the clearcoat had already started burning off in spots. It's much worse now. I plan to keep this car forever, replacing engines, transmissions, whatever is necessary to keep it going. I'd like to have it repainted, but I am not happy with the Maaco paint jobs I've seen. Maybe I'm spoiled from seeing so many high end restorations. This is just a transportation car. It would cost more for a decent paint job than to replace the engine with a rebuilt long block, including labor, which I could do. The big problem I have with Maaco paint jobs, for what they cost, is not so much the quality of the paint where there is supposed to be paint, it's that they paint all kinds of places that are not supposed to be painted. I know masking is labor intensive, and that seems to be where they really cut corners.

@@geraldscott4302 I understand where you are coming from but it isn't clearcoat you are unhappy with, it is cheap paint you are unhappy with.
Quality clears will last for decades in the sun with no problems. Cheap clears will turn hazy and go bad really quick. What is the difference? UV additive, good clears have it cheap clears don't. I am friends with a paint chemist from PPG, he told me that the UV additive is extremely expensive for the good stuff. The best additive will never yellow or allow color fading at all.
I have cars I painted 30 years ago with top of the line clear and they sit outside in the SoCal sun with no issues, they still look great and I have not polished them, just keep them washed.
The problem with Maaco paint jobs is that you get what you pay for, it's priced that way for a reason.
Factory paint is not great anymore on lower priced cars too. Look at all of the newer Toyota Corollas with rusty roofs and oxidized top surfaces. The manufacturers are using cheaper paint, applying it minimally thin to maximize profits and give you a reason to buy a new car after 5 years.
Your Grand Marquis might have been repaired prior to you buying it. Spot repairs or "smart" repairs are common for used car dealers to make the car look good for the sale but will not last like an I-CAR or otherwise certified repair procedure/material. Certified bodyshops are required to guarantee their work and materials for life. The high-end refinish repairs will outlast factory paint any day.
The quality clears are expensive, usually over $400 per gallon and it goes up from there. I paint my cars myself and I spring for the best materials. I typically spend $1500-1800 on materials alone. I have never had any problems with quality clears holding up to hot sun and neglect.
Buy once, cry once. You get what you pay for.

Sounds exactly like my few months spraying at Maaco. Everyone likes to talk smack about them, but few have a clue how top notch their system is and quality can be, depending on your prep work, or how much you pay them to do. I came from a shop that specialized in restorations and high-end cars. Switching from taking a day to tape off a car and clean the booth, a day to spray the car, and days cutting and buffing for a award winning paint job to one car sprayed every hour was a nightmare for me. After a few weeks I was getting seven good cars in eight hrs but always had one with dirt or a run to fix. My cheat was seeing what jobs I needed to spray and then arranging them in order so I could fill the pressure pot with clear to use on all my base clear jobs. That was working great until I cut my fingers really bad and had to go to the emergency room. The manager sprayed my cars for the day, and until they hired a new painter.
When I went in to pickup my last pay check, because my gun hand needed to heal for a few months, the owner accused me of purposely cuttng myself and not telling anyone about the clear in the pressure pot, which had hardened up and destroyed it, because I wanted to sabatage him and collect workman's comp. He did this after I had put my heart and sole into trying to make his new business venture a success, and damn near killing myself trying to get 8 perfect paint jobs in 8 hrs everyday. It's a good thing the manager was 300lbs and between us when he accused me of this or I'd still be in prison for assault with intent, or worse.

One of our body guys did paint work on the side and he gave me a crash course. He was an absolute magician with a paint gun, so I had a good teacher. I completely wrecked my first paint job, but got better quickly. 100% accurate about a car per hour and the paint formulas (I also came up with a work-around that let me use the correct amount of paint to do a good job).
If you're seriously considering a Maaco paint job, ask around, talk to the painter and body guys and be extremely specific with your expectations. If you get a painter who cares about doing a good job, and body guys who know what they're doing, you'll be fine. Every single Maaco is different, however, so do your homework.

They didn't even paint the bottom of the mirrors, and he still refused to make it right. I went co corporate and fought, and they wouldn't do anything because it was a franchise. I'll never go to a Maaco. They did a terrible job on our military vehicles too.

Brings back memories of the Earl Schieb paint job. In 1971 I owned a 1967 Impala as a second car. I wanted to get a repaint to cover some of the primer spots. After the estimate of hundreds of dollars from the local body shop I drove to the nearest Earl Schieb. The “any car any color” pricing was from a list of about eight colors. I chose yellow for the $49.95 paint job. When I picked up the car the paint job was beautiful and seemingly flawless. The only down side was in a couple of years the yellow had faded to a yellowish cream color.

I used Maaco one time before and was impressed for the 1500 I paid. I’d use them again but I’d do about 80% of the body work before I’d take it in. Had a 92 Lexus LS400 2 tone Pearl white with silver rockers stock paint, very nice. Wife got backed into and bent up the hood, gill and left fender. Insurance took it to Maaco and they told us it would be ready in 4 days and for $100 morre they would even reshoot the gray rockers. Ok I say and when we got the car back in 4 days, the hood looked brand new, fenders were straight and new grill. Even after 15 years of paint color fading, all 3 panels matched the rest of the cars color and the silver rockers looked fantastic. I was blown away at the quality and the finish. They asked me how it looked and I told them I would be happy to recommend them to all my classic car guys. Had my 65 Barracuda shot at One-Day back in 1996 ish and paid the 'stage 2' price where they actually paint the door jambs and trunk and hood (!) and even that job looked pretty darn good for $299 (?) I still have that car in my garage and it still looks pretty good but it does scratch very easily, like they didnt even prime it, they just shot the sunburst silver right over the original 1965 copper color.

My MAACO experience. I had a rat Miata that I had done a TON of good quality body work on. But, as you point out, my shop wasn't interested in a whole car paint job. Took it to MAACO for 660$ for the Urethane paint, since a 93 Mazda was single stage paint anyway. This shop was SCARY! Big tim building, one light bulb way up in the rafters, located in a dirt industrial park. I look down and saw a DIRT FLOOR! Actually, it wasn't- just years of not cleaning. That said, I got a REMARKABLE paint job. In spite of trhe deplorable conditions, clearly the painter had learned to cope with them. You CAN get a great paint job at MAACO; it's just knowing how to do it. Here's how. 1. Take EVERYTHING off that you can. ALL the chrome, ALL the rubber, lights, gaskets. On the Miata, I pulled the top and the entire interior. Inner fender liners, too. 2. Go over the car with a marker as to what they are fixing. Mark EVERYTHING. If there's a door chip MARK IT. If you don't, it will get painted right over. 3. Pay for paint. Agree with what you said; you want paint, but for a second reason You can literally sand and buff a stunning paint job out of a MAACO job- IF there's enough paint to do it. 4. If you can get it color sanded and buffed for a fair price, do it. Right now I've got a mint original Limited Edition Miata, that has a buff through right in the middle of the deck lid. I'm ready to let MAACO take a shot at it, simply because paint and body is crazier than ever, and even getting in a shop- ANY shop- is crazy hard- 2+ month waits. 5 Finally, try not to change colors. I know, you're painting the who car, so why not? Well because you aren't. A lot of money can be saved by not having to jamb a car. But, that means a factory color match. Really, a color change almost always ends up looking cheap. Don't do it. FINALLY....Do as much labor- cleaning, sanding, dissassembly, assembly and such as you can. One big don't- don't use MAACO for rust repair. You'll get filler. Car will look great for 6 months, then the bubbles begin. Do the body work, or get a quality shop to do it the right way. Get it PAINT READY. That, to me means other than a quick wipe down, it's ready to shoot. Follow these rules, and make sure you've got a good painter, and you can have a car that can hold it's own at local shows.

It looked good but I could still see some of the old spots where the original clear had peeled under the new paint at certain angles. It was black so i knew it was gonna show every flaw. They did a decent job for a driver quality refresh. They couldve sealed it better before paint. Thye also painted the wheel lip trim which was also expected for a 'cheap" paint job. Ive since painted 2 cars myself in my garage. Its time and money that makes a great paint job.

That's a shame, the Trofeo is a nice car. I had a Buick Riv in that platform. To properly fix that they would have needed to use some primer sealer and sandable primer. That's the thing a lot of people don't know. However smooth the surface is before the paint goes on is what it's going to look like after. Usually a dark color magnifies the imperfections. My bud's car had a few areas like that and the guy at Maaco was freaking out going 'that has to be stripped!' He told me 'You and I would just call it 'sanding' but they're accustomed to almost zero prep work.

One thing people have to keep in mind that Maaco is a franchise and every Maaco is run different. Depending on the owners, geographic ect. My shop is in a expensive area majority of our client want the top of the line paint job and money\price is not usually not an issue . Been there going on 4 years and we never have sprayed the basic enamel we do some urethane but mostly base clear . We have built a reputation as the top rated Maaco "google" in the central Florida area . We sell our services as some where between a Typical maaco and a convention body shop and we are crushing the market as there really are only two types the Economical Maaco paint Job or high end there really is not much in between . We do provide higher quality service of course at a cost . Typical paint job is 2500 - 3500 with quick turn around which is important to most customers. We run anywhere from 3-4 weeks out as the shop is always packed . My advise is always check online reviews . Our key to success at Maaco land o lakes is our techs . our painter has been with us for 7 years we do our best to keep him happy and content. Our A- Tech body man has been with us 5 years our top notch detailer has also been with us close to 5 years and myself General manager 4 years . This makes a difference trust me .

I had 2 cars painted at Maaco. He first was my 1953 Chrysler, they did a beautiful job. The second was my '65 Chevy truck. They painted it 3 times and before it left the shop. The paint was pealing when I went to pick it up. The guy working on it looked like he was homeless. He stole the change out of the ashtray (he left the pennies, that's how I knew), my radio had paint fingerprints (there wasn't an antenna, so it wouldn't work).

I totally used them throughout the 90s- every tax season they would advertise the 199 special. The trick I learned was to take of all of the trim, lights, handles, ect of yourself, drive it that way during mid day hours with your friend closely tailing you to lesskn your chance of getting pulled over, and form a working relationship with the shop where they allow you to tape your own vehicle. If you didn't tape your own vehicle you were going to have to accept major overspray but lets me fair, you were still getting a decent paint job for 199 and technically speaking why should they have to worry about overspray on an economy paint job?

I wet-sanded the car myself (I had worked as a laborer in a body shop a few years prior) and it was getting painted the same color it already was, black. They charged me $399 ($299 plus $100 for plasticizer additive for the bumper covers) and it actually turned out looking really nice. I sold the car about a year later and the paint still looked nice then. Leaving the wet-sanding to them is probably a bad idea and I would never have them do a color change.

I always figured the painter took one look at the prep work and decided to slam it out of the park. I offered it as a trade in to a large toyota dealer a few years later. They said the paint had a little issue; there was a little overspray in the sunroof tracks! The job was $500, and Maaco matched the factory tan color.
