A brief (Spoiler Free) retrospective that will hopefully show you why you should play Final Fantasy 9 now.
I had a lot of fun making this video and hope to make more and improve at this style of content!

This was introduction into the series. And one game I can play over and over again without losing interest. The story is the deepest (in my opinion) one of the franchise. SQUARE was inspired my Jim Henson's film, the Dark Crystal while designing the art for the game.
If anything i get more interested in it every time i play it XD. Didn't know about the Dark crystal inspiration at all. might be time to watch it again 😄

I love FF IX. The characters, the story the charm, the music. IX is usually my second favorite FF behind X. But sometimes it's my favorite.

Guess what? I'm currently replaying it , it's my 7th playthrough, and I enjoy as much, if not more, as when I first played it ! This game never ages!❤

I had ff7 and loved it, I then played ff8 at my friends house and saved up my pocket money to buy it. By the time I had enough and got to the shop ff9 was out so I got that instead. Fantastic.

Awesome. Night little bite size overview. I got this game in April 2001 with the money from my 10th Birthday. You said it isnt your favourite, so which FF is? :)
I got it the same way then i turned 11 XD and this might be a controversial subject but it's a toss up between 8 and 5, 8 was my first and i enjoy the satire of 5, its just excellent!
@@maxweaponage I'm making an FF8 video atm. It's probably my favourite too. I never got into 5 though. Will have to try again at some point
ff9 is my favorite and its tied with 6 on my favorite list, ff9 is so damn good
I think the only thing I criticize is the story pacing at the last part of the game. It takes quite a turn there and some things kind of come out of nowhere. I don't know if it's the transition or what but it feels so different. But it's fantastic and quite emotional game
It's one of the best entries in the series and surprisingly the only one I haven't finished yet. The reason being, in my opinon combat is just too slow and laggy. You select a command and the time it takes to actually execute it takes a really long time. It made me feel really disconnected from the battle. To the point for e.g. where I started to wonder "did I actually execute that potion item already? Ok, maybe not" and then I end up executing the potion twice only because it takes so long between selecting first command and actually executing it. Previous iterations in the series had much smoother battle system where commands were executed much quicker.
I really do hope they fix that in the potential remake because story/characters wise this game is really dope!
I kind of agree with the slow laggy battles, but when the battle difficulty ramps up i appreciate the time to think XD
It's not underrated, the game is well beloved and held in high regard.

I tried to download and use a ps1 emulator for ff9 . I could not get it to work so I just let it go. Still forever my favorite FF game ever
It's on sale on steam quite often. bios and stuff can make emulation frustrating

The ONLY problem with this game is the long loading times/slow battle process. Everything else is fantastic!
Well, that's definitely a result of the time it was made, however i find the game can be quite challenging when the ATB wait is turned off!
Why you SHOULDNT play it now: there's very likely a remake coming, so you should just wait for that instead.
Most likely it will be a very different game, also most likely they're going to butcher the whole thing
agreed and just because there's a potential remake coming doesn't mean the original is null and void!
@@jenkins464 If you look at Squenix's latest releases, they have done a lot of very faithful remakes/remasters in recent years. I think that's what they'll do with FF9 as well. I don't think they're gonna massively change that much. I think it's gonna be similar to the recent Star Ocean 2 remake, which has been very well received.
I wanted to like FF9 but the character design was too stupid. Feels like everyone besides Vivi is as big of a joke character as Cait Sith was
It is a great game, but it definitely isn’t underrated. If anything it gets overrated by a shockingly one sided rabid fanbases that often dismisses the games that came before it, namely VIII, but also VII and VI. FF V and back are definitely underrated. XII as well.
I see what you mean, I was just trying to say that It was underrated at the time of release. I definitely agree with your opinion on ffv too. it was a great satire of the genre and I have lots of love for it and VIII expecially.
One of the worst FF. With only 15 and the 13 trilogy and 12 being worse. So many glaring flaws that people refuse to put at face value.
1. The battle system was slow AF.
2. Tropes on tropes on tropes. Nothing original. Characters were super shallow. Considering this was the 9th installment they should have had better characters. Eiko and Red were useless in terms of the story except for the Alexander scene.
3. Annoying mini games. Nothing memorable about the mini games.
4. The final boss becomes a guy that comes out of nowhere. Kuja is also very weak.
5. What happened to Sir Frat? The rat. Like bro Freya didnt get her closure. Also shes kinda useless.
6. The equipment system was tedious and unimaginative. The 9th installment....they couldnt think of better things to innovate?
7. Zidane all of a sudden becoming a lil bia at the end was just so cliche. Hes like the boy from Star ocean the last hope. It totally goes against who he is. Dont matter what he finds out about his past, his current self is his real self snd he becomes a dang baby. Annoying.
8. Vivi dying made everyone sad. Did anyone feel sad for any of the other mages....

Meh it's slow, it's clunky, the steal mechanic is very frustrating in this game, and attempting to complete all the subquests and secrets (for which back in the day you would have had to purchase the official guide) feels more like a punishment than a reward. Which is unfortunately the case for many FF titles.
It is a masterpiece for its time. Visually it's the most impressive final fantasy ever and I have very fond memories of it, but it's not fun to play unless someone makes a mod that overhaul the entire thing to make it more interesting.
I guess the closest thing i can mention to an overhaul is the Moguri mod. if you've tried that? only graphical though 😓
It's funny you bring up the official guide. You couldn't finish it even with the guide. It had like 1/3 of the information purposely edited out and in it's place was a suggestion that you check out Square's Play Online service which IIRc was subscription only. It was seriously predatory on Brady games and Squaresoft's. Basically paid 15 dollars for an advertisement for an online service.
To each their own as I still stand firm at age 40 playing every single Final Fantasy that there ever was including Mystic Quest which was technically The Saga series I can say that Final Fantasy 9 is the worst Final Fantasy in the entirety of the series this includes but is not limited to the mobile games that they had pushed out including again but not limited to the few that closed in less than a year

Completely agree. The battle experience is the absolute worst of any of the games in the franchise. Since you spend the most time in a FF game battling, that alone is a no go for me. I'm sure the story is interesting, but there's no way in playing through hours upon hours of that horrid battle experience to find out.
@billlong7146 unfortunately I forced myself to suffer through this entire game and I can tell you that the story does not get any better that weird big ugly thing with the long tongue you do realize that that character is only hanging around your character until Vivi is old enough that he's able to cook and eat him.... Vivi is with you because he's a depressed Black Mage who's one of the last of his species who just like any other video game Trope doesn't know what to do with himself... garnet... is nothing more than all the previous Final Fantasy females attached to the protagonist stirred into a barrel...
And let's not even mention that zidane the main protagonist is a guy walking around with cat ears and a tail...
Stiner... he is literally nothing more than a fattened version of the Tin Man from The Wizard before Oz and if you look into each and every individual character they all follow a Trope of one of the actors in The Wizard of Oz.
This isn't even scraping dirt off a nail for everything that could be possibly wrong with this game not even counting how shity the battle system is
