- Final Fantasy 9 is one of if not my favorite video game. I've been wanting to review this for a long time but I wasn't sure when. Squaresoft (or now Square-Enix's) final entry on the Playstation 1 is something worth your time. And hey it's on everything now, even the Nintendo Switch so uh. Go get it please.
This is a Part One of a two parter! The next episode will probably be longer and have MANY SPOILERS.

now that i think about it, there are no gods in ff9, just people fighting other people and becoming incredibly op
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz *Cough* *Cough* Necron *Cough*
@@pious83 eh the thing is more of an abstract than a god.
necron is also a made up name for some translations, in most languages he's called "ethernal darkness", so he's not the god of death as much as the concept of nothingness, what remains after kuja wipes all existance.
he'd make exdeath have a voidgasm.
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz God/Abstract Entity, same difference. I always said, it would have been the ultimate piece of fan service to have replaced Necron with Cloud of Darkness. A far more fitting resolution than 'Surprise final boss that comes out of nowhere'.
@@pious83 it's not exactly the same, gods usually have an agenda of some kind like the ones in ff12 or 15 or the triad from 6 while abstracts are inert or have no real will of their own, necron is basically the lifestream or the pyreflies from 10 made into a bossfight.
basically gods are still characters, while abstracts like necron are a force like gravity.
Zidane and Vivi pissing down the side of the bridge is one of the best moments in the game.
Ronin11111111 tinkle tinkle
it's both metaphorically deep and literally hilarious
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz Exactly.
alexander martinez Yep 😂😂😂
Just the deepest bond between two men: taking a tinkle under the stars.
My favorite moment in 9 (I got stuck on yhe outer continent and didn't finish) is in Cid's city, when Zidane wanders into an armor shop and thinks to himself "Who would wear this rusty junk?" And when you play as Steiner and go into the same shop he exclaims (paraphrased) "Look at all this expertly crafted armor!"
Steiner wears rusty armor but also consistently has best defence. I think the dude's onto something
@@KOTEBANAROT Well duh, Steiner is practical in this matter, and Zidane is following the rule of cool!
KOT EBANA ROT Well if his armor’s that rusty, then he’s probably gotten a lot of use out of it. Better to wear something comfortable and sturdy than something cheap and flashy.
"Oh boy, 3 am!"
Such well-written characters. Its little moments like this that really show you the care the put into creating them.
Vivi has little to no facial expressions but has been made the most emotionally readable and relatable character of the entire game. You can see what he feels just by looking at him.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only fully fledged adult that cries at the ending of this game. I love FF9 so much.
9 will forever, and always, be my favorite in the series. A title where the world feels alive, the characters interact and mesh with one another the best I've ever seen. They support one another and theres so much amazing growth... The sound track... Character designs... The story.... All of it. The perfect Final Fantasy. And I don't ever see that changing.
I'm sad I'll never get to experience anything like playing FF9 for the first time again. It felt.... magical. I was so captivated. Ugh. So sad 😭. I want to go back in time!
Why couldn't we get more games in the FF9 universe? Screw the modern world of the new games! If I wanted to be in the modern world, I'd just...... EXIST. lmao
You're fooling yourself if you really beleive that. What about the overpowered monster who can instantly kill you regardless of level, or the atb system which basically is a timer to attack fast which heavily ruins the combat, what about the random guesswork in some fights? (using life on ifa tree to kill it, how would anyone know to do that? Unless they look it up.) Pretty mediocre game and definitely does not live up to the hype at all. 6/10.
@@futuregenesis97 most dead creatures in the game die when Life is cast on them. Regardless, you don't need random guesswork, you can just fight the boss normally. Killing it with a phoenix down is more like an easter egg.
9 was my favorite FF then, and it's still my favorite now. I've been singing its praises for damn near 20 years. It truly does deserve a lot more credit.
Buttslammer Bob I
I totally agree. There’s something special about this game that I haven’t been able to get out of my head 17 years later from the first time I played it. It would be a sick movie probably (HEY NETFLIX!) :)
Definitely.
Buttslammer Bob No it doesn’t.
@@Zelink108 Compelling argument. Hush.
Can you imagine a proper remake of this game where you're free to explore Lindblum to the fullest? Possibly having some mist engine airships to purchase and explore the map. Perhaps a couple more characters a flesh out existing ones like Amarant, explaining stuff like the petrifying forest, etc. Maybe a few minigames, more missable items, more villages or sites with interesting vistas, etc. It needn't be an ambitious project, just a passionate one, it would be so great. VII fans are so lucky.
I hear you. Maybe some day
ya.. i hope FF7 Remake does so well.. that they decide to do the same thing with other entries in the series
Don't forget that if they ever remake FF9, we would get to fight the other guardians of terra, kinda wanted to see the other party members' parts and not just Zidane and Quina.
Seriously, the only major problems perople have with this game (other than taste differences) are things that either weren't perfectly implemented (the slow battles) or weren't contextualised fully (Amarant and the final boss). Just adding a bit more context or foreshadowing for everything would make the whole thing perfect.
"What is this? WHERE ARE THE CRYSTALS???"
😂😂🤣
This game is near and dear to my heart. I'll never forget it, and hearing you talk about it gives me feelings.
Ficus1493 I can play this game any day. I used to make up side stories for it, and soooo badly wanted a sequel
This was the first final fantasy game where I could sit all wrapped up on my own and play for hours on end. 7 and 8 I played with friends because I could never afford a console. I'll never forget that experience.
Same!❤
FF9 is quite possibly where I learned the most about how to write and develop characters.
Dizzle without an R I love how well interwoven the character arcs are in FF9. They all grow together, its fantastic
@Jason U That and Star Trek: Deep Space 9 made me the writer I am today. What's your problem with that?
My favorite part of FFIX: "Rally Ho yourself."
Kakakakakakkakkakakkakkakakak
Rally kupo!
Man, I adore FFIX as it was the first ever RPG I played and finished when I got it in 2001.
The good news is that nowadays, I always hear IX mentioned with what most people consider the high points of the series, VI, and VII.
Pretty much. In fan polls, those three are always on top when it comes to people's favorite FF game in the main series.
Robert Jennewein That’s nothing more than nostalgia shilling, VII deserves it’s praise, IX doesn’t.
Terrible cast
>Forgettable characters and hideous designs
>Slow combat even slower than the SNES FFs
>Less customisation than previous FFs
>Claims to be a throwback to older FFs when it isn't at all and doesn't resemble them in any way and the older FFs did what people claim this game does far better
The golden age of FF (VII, X and XII) were all made/written/designed by people way more fucking talented. Same went with Mistwalker. Lost Odyssey was mostly made and written by others (Daisuke Fukugawa, and good parts of the plot (like the text stories, world concept and characters) were done by Kiyoshi Shigematsu), while the games Sakaguchi did have more input on are the ones nobody fucking remembers. What input Sakaguchi DID have on the good
entries with his name slapped on them were so absolutely minuscule, and usually rewritten/designed by other people anyway.
Jason. You're opinion, dude. And you're wrong.
@@Zelink108 its the first time I watched this Video and read some comments. I found quite a few comments of you with some time between them(some are some months old others some weeks). In each you say why YOU think IX is a Bad game. We get it but you will not convice anybody to get from "I love/like this game!" to "this one guy in the comment section said some things that are bad in his opinion, he must be right! This game sux!". Bro, don't you got anything bettet to do? Why the hate? Did your girl left you with a guy whos favorite game is ffIX? Get over it.
@@Zelink108 Lol, the golden age of FF does not go to XII. It's VI-IX or VI-X if I'm feeling generous. But the best 3 are obviously VI, VII and IX.
FF9 is the best Final Fantasy! It's the one I grew up with because I didn't get into games until later, but Zidane remains my favourite protagonist because he's not a mopey bastard.
Plus, I love that I can get my first JRPG that made me fall in love with the genre on my phone. It's amazing to me.
Mopey is annoying for sure but the complete opposite (aka Zidane) is annoying too. Zidane was my least fav characters in FF9, well 2nd. Only cause Amarant was boring af.
"My dreams will become a part of the sky."
I FREAKING LOVE Final Fantasy IX
It's almost like the perfect game for me in a sense of storytelling, the characters, the villains. There wasn't 1 character that I truly dislike or hated for the most. To me this game is not just another FF game, it's wonderful journey and this is my all time favorite FF game in the series.
Quina sucks though.... Come on. Lol
"We met, we laughed, we held on fast, and then we said goodbye"
this verse summarizes the series to me
Except for that part where Garnet DRUGS AND ABANDONS Zidane, yeah real great love story there, Garnet was a complete selfish idiot who abandoned the man (and her friends) who loved her and risked his life for her, just so she can run home crying to her psycho mommy despite running away from her in the first place, and not caring that the others where in a war zone with no healer now that she blew them off and not to mention all the destruction that was caused because of her stupid actions, to make things worse she NEVER gets called out on any of this by Zidane and the others who should be rightfully be furious with her, If I were Zidane, I would have been really upset with her after losing a close friend in the attempt to rescue her only for her to decide to blow me off and make the whole sacrifice meaningless.
@@Zelink108 jfc dude, calm down. Characters in this had flaws and made mistakes. They grow, develop and that's what makes it great.
@Ze TheGame Couldn't disagree more, it's the highest rated Final Fantasy game for a reason.
@Ze TheGame Consensus among PS1 Finanl Fantasy fans you mean!
@@Zelink108 the amount of ire in this comment proves how you really love this game. Respect 🙌
Glad someone is finally giving 9 the push it deserves. You’re also 100% right about 9 having the best score. Pretty much every FF has a great OST, but 9’s can’t be matched. Roses of May still makes me tear up.
Christian Holland I always preferred FF8’s score myself, but FFIX nailed the repeated theme elements in FF9’s ost
@@zetandpeligaming 8 is a close second for me. The Deling City theme inspired my love of harpsichord.
Christian Holland Awesome! A friend of mine used to write Final Fantasy style music, but a standout track for me was probably Maybe I’m a lion. I also used to have ‘The Mission’ as my ringtone when I had an old Nokia 3310
Snes era and these 2 are the best (8-9) :)
6, 7, 8 & 9 were the golden age for FF musical scores. 5 is somewhat underrated.

9 is still my favorite final fantasy GAME of all time.
Took me a while to get used to Zidane's voice in Dissidia though. But now I like it.
FF IX is my favorite lol i love Vivi and his story was so perfect! It was my first full play through of a FF game even though i had 7. My friends and i even tried to make a live action movie when i was kid. It was terrible but my friend who played Vivi and the other black mage robots was dressed up in like 3 robes in the middle of summer in the Mojave desert. Lol i wish i could find the footage
Thats awesome
I wish you could find the footage I'd watch it 😁😂
This was my first and is my favorite FF.
Also your use of “memes” is top notch. Little but well applied. But most of all: Fun. The Jordan one killed me!.
"Memes" why so serious
Ĵαcκ Ɯнιтɛ I’m a boomer unfortunately 😬
I have never played a “main line” Final Fantasy game. This will be my first, in part due to this video. Thank you!
i need to know what you thought
When I bought FFIX months ago, I was more used to the "righteous hero" type of RPG protagonist. Zidane was a surprising change of character and it took a bit for me to see reasons to really like him.
As I played more of the game, his character was revealed more to me and I could appreciate how different he was in attitude from a lot of other protagonists.
He went from being kind of annoying to me, to being a more interesting character with even some moments of him making me laugh with his approaches to certain events.
Youre not alone at the end made me cry, god i love this game, bought it 7 times already xD
I'm going to buy it again for the Switch now too XD
and the orchestral version makes me cry every time
God dammit I felt the tears coming on when "You're not Alone" kicked in during this video. That part of the game is one of the most emotionally impactful moments I've ever experienced in any form of media, especially because the song itself is so damn perfect at portraying melancholy while at the same time having an undercurrent of determination. It sounds like a stirring triumphant song, like Frog's theme in Chrono Trigger that's been remixed too be slower and sadder.
Hope that ramble makes sense too someone other than me.
@15:20
About JRPGs that are not about world saving:
The atelier series. Lovely games.
You make the world a better place, but its always a very personal story.
Zavida ive never heard of this series but now ill look into it. thanks!
Not all of the atelier series, though. The only one I've played, Atelier Iris, has a big 'save the world' element to it.
@@DJNenz i recommend rorona as a good first look at the chill atelier games!
I've always been curious about the Atelier games, I even own the first 3 on PS3 but never got around to them. Then I played Ar no surge and hated it so much it turned me off to all Gust games for years. Starting to get the drive to check out the Atelier games again though.
I played Atelier Iris 2 and 3, both had to do with saving the world if I remember correctly.
9 is definitely my favorite final fantasy, I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one! Vivi is still my favorite final fantasy character!
I’ve been playing FF IX on my Switch over the last few days and oh man..it has been a beautiful trip down memory lane 😊
Since you seem to have played the original, did the PS1 version have the God mode options like the switch version?
IX is my personal favorite. As much as I enjoyed FF7, I was never that much into the fantasy/cyber-punk theme that it went for, and found 9's character and settings to be a lot more charming.
Those two and VI are the best.
9 has always been my favorite and it's the final fantasy game that i had the most fun playing when i was a kid. i remember loving garnet so much and thinking that she was so brave for taking her destiny into her own hands. every time i play it again, it zaps me right back into the fifth grade x)
Steiner is one of the best characters in this game lol! He cracks me up every time I play. IX is a master class game and my favorite Final Fantasy.
Dude right? He's so fucking funny. I want to laugh whenever I think of his armor clanking.
@DY111 Agreed! And that character development is so smooth and well written, you don't even question why they like each other by the end of it. Good stuff
Stiener best bean
"Also He Kind Of Looks Like Human Shrek...Sorry, Not Sorry."
I laughed so hard lol! 😂😂😂
I've been working my way through each Final Fantasy slowly, completing about two a year. This year I played FFIX for the first time. I knew it was regarded as a classic and I really enjoyed it despite the hype. I played the game after finishing II and III (JP) earlier. FFIX was a breath of fresh air and not just because it was newer. It knew what to incorporate of the classic and traditional FF. I think all 3 of the PSX FF are special in their own way. I can't wait to see more of this SE month, Austin. Love ya.
Final fantasy 9: exists*
Everyone: applause*
Dark Messenger is delicious to hear. One of the final theme ever.
You're Not Alone... get it?
Finally some one says it. I love this damn game but all people talk about is 6, 7, and 10
honestly they're more complete games, 9 is my fave forever but it does lack postgame and stuff
nickeltuesday I remember FF7 and FF8 being too expensive for me to buy on my own as a kid, but FF9 seemed to drop in price really quickly back in the day. It’s so underrated
6,7,8,910 are the best final fantasy games
@@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz These games don't need postgame
@@Walamonga1313 yeah and you don't need to put anything on your bread or eat anything but chicken and noodles for lunch.

4:36 That song ALWAYS gives me goosebumps lol. Love your video, 9 is such a gem.
Ah yes, all the classic jobs are there
Zidane: Thief
Dagger: White Mage
Quina: Blue Mage
Vivi: Black Mage
Steiner: Knight
Eiko: Summoner
Freya: Dragoon
Amarant: Shit character that nobody likes or uses
Hey, do not disrespect my monk/ninja crossover.
FFIX is the best game in the series. The story is so good and has some of the best characters. Vivi shit on some FF protagonists easily.
9 has the unique achievement among FF games of actually making me cry, aside from tearing up at a certain point in XIV Heavensward. Something about the cartoonish art style and upbeat humor mixed with the somber themes, the respect and consideration of concepts like identity and death, it just felt a lot more mature and resonant than the more "mature" games in the series.
@@WakkaMadeInYevon The existencial, death and how accept death is really well done. Vivi ending is so freaking sad. I like how character have inter connected character arc. Vivi and Zidane is all about existencial crisis, Vivi and Dagger are all about discovering themselves and Vivi is all about accepting his inevitable death. Its freaking glorious.
@@alsaiduq4363 it all comes back to Vivi
Guilherme Souza I have the same appreciation. I actually love how eiko’s spontaneous and spunky personality helps to bring vivi out of his shell. She doesn’t really need to be protected, but I remember a part where they’re in the iifa tree and she yells at him because he’s not keeping up with her. He doesn’t have a chance to sit back and brood over his existential crisis, because she won’t let him. She probably doesn’t know the affect that she’s having on him, and that’s why I think it’s so brilliant. Because that’s exactly how our relationships (in reality) are built.
I also love the moment where Steiner has his epiphany, and he realizes that he can’t properly serve his queen and country if he’s not willing to fight for true justice. He suddenly stops berating Zidane and realizes that he actually does trust him...and that Freya displays true courage, and that he needs to finally do the same. It’s perfectly executed
to me FF9 has an ok story, but it suffers too much from the VERY POOR execution of the battle system and it is so freaking unbalanced you can just beat the game at level 1 which I did for the challenge. Speed stat and the ATB system which is core to the game doesn't even work properly, the haste buff doesn't do anything good, even if you raise your speed to the max you won't take anymore turn than a level 1 unupgraded character without haste. This is how bad the battle system is.
Edit: also, having to cheat to obtain the Excalibur 2 or doing the rope achievement, just shows how bad the game is. There's just no way I would do those 2 things in a legit way.
Austin, I am so happy to see you doing a video over this game. Truly since I first played through it at a very young age it has been my all time favorite game! The character work and story is phenomenal and deep. I play through it once a year, and the ending consistently gets me every time as well. Thank you for shedding light on what I believe to be the best Final Fantasy game. I know it's not perfect but I think where it shines...well it shines the brightest. Keep up the good work, I always love watching your videos. As a fellow gamer, weeb, and drummer...keep on keepin' on!
Christopher Borrelli
I enjoyed the way you set up the videos into two separate parts. I was able to indulge in nostalgia for the first video, and now I can play the game with a first-time close family member - without reliving all the spoilers, yet.
Thank you for your insights and your approach to the videos.
Ah yes my favorite game of all times, i can't count the amount of times i completed it, and never get boring of it's story and moments
Ff IX is very underrated game. My favourite Ff of all time. A masterpiece in PS1 era.
The ending makes me cry everytime too... and when you had the music from close to the end playing, memories came flooding back. 😭😂
You had me when the menu music kicked in. This game was a huge part of my childhood and glad to see it getting some love!
FF9R looks great, the entire game takes place in Evil Forest.
I'M STILL DYING FOR PART TWO
IX was the third FF I was aware of (my friend at the time had the strat guide for VII lying around and I liked the pictures), the second I actually saw and played firsthand (VIII was a bit newbie unfriendly on gameplay, but I loved the story - or at least what I saw of it as my friend stopped letting me watch halfway through), and the first I intensely devoured and fell in love with.
IX was and continues to be my absolute favorite of the series, even though I'll admit its execution falls a little short in the middle of the second act until the grand finale...and Necron works better in concept than practice...but Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, and the rest are always my first image when FF is brought up.
Freya and Quina are my fave party members, by the by.
(VI, my second favorite, is probably the best FF by any objective measure, but very little of art can truly be measured in any kind of objecive quality)
Great video! Can’t wait for Part 2.
Yessss!!!! I'm super hyped for this series Austin. More more and more please!!!
With final fantasy IX being my favorite final fantasy I feel that amaranth story could have been better. He should have been a disciple to a monk/ninja dojo, but leaves because of his arrogance. Only to do what he does within the game, comes back again to the dojo for his master to challenge him as an awesome side boss. His master would use attacks from the other final fantasy monks.
Bulletproof Monk Freya and amarant’s stories are the only aspects of this game that really bum me out. Despite me understanding why they probably went the route they did with these characters, I still feel like they could’ve done more. Part of me feels like they were meant to be a sort of caricature of similar archetypes that came in previous games of the series. Like they stand more for a particular idea or theme than actually being their own fully realized person.
Freya’s courage and selflessness does sort of help to develop Steiner and amarant...but that’s mostly where her relevance peaks. She’s supposed to sort of drive the point that we need to care about eachother, and to care about justice to succeed.
I wish that the remaster of this game would’ve added some extra dungeons (like they did in the remasters of FFV and FFVI)...perhaps where Freya tries to find an artifact that can return fratleys memory, and maybe a quest where amarant truly changes ideology...it could’ve involved lani somehow..maybe even making her an secret/playable character.
T City your idea for Freya I enjoy a lot, that would make her story not be so bittersweet wouldn’t. There is a RUclipsr, named redcoat that goes over some fantastic analysis of certain final Fantasy characters. He goes over freya nicely then I ever could explain. I felt that for freya the game fleshed her out well she lived up to her title card of despair. She lost home, love and friends but staying strong for the party. Yes you exactly right about amarant being a caricature of what came before but IMO poorly. I felt that he suffered because he was not supposed to be anything but a weaker Vincent or shadow in attitude. Maybe budgets, time idk but his story needed to be flesh out more play on his arrogance more where he just straight up leaves the party when we hit a town for a while just to reflect and maybe see more of his past with lani. He has a knack of hanging with strong females freya and lani respectively, maybe have his master be a female monk master and him getting beaten bruised his ego. But unknown to him he clings to them out of respect to their strength and reminding him of his master. I would love to have lani playable she has a secret scene at madi sari if you go back there later.
Any video (especially a lengthy two-parter) on the greatest game ever made is just fine. Keep up the great work, Austin.
This is great Austin. I'm 28, so right in your range age wise and with FF, IX was always the one I happened to miss but earlier this year I tried it for the first time (FINALLY) and really loved it so it's nice to see such a gush over it.
FF9 is without question my favourite Final Fantasy and it has been since it was released. For me, it ticks every box for a JRPG and is part of the trifecta of Square's greatest titles: Final Fantasy 9, Dragon Quest 8 and Vagrant Story.
The tone, whimsy and charm of Final Fantasy 9 coupled with the really thoughtful examination of sense of place and home among all the characters will forever make it stand out to me. It's such a beautiful journey.
Well, this is Sakaguchi's favorite FF game, being his previous favorite FF game the V's
Oaoj Ordep Nostalgia goggle wearers always bring this up like it means something. This is the same guy that nearly tanked his entire company with that awful movie and then went on to make blue dragon and the last story. Sure. His opinion is gospel.
Why should it have any bearing on anyone else's?
The golden age of FF (VII, X and XII) were all made/written/designed by people way more talented. Same went with Mistwalker. Lost Odyssey was mostly made and written by others (Daisuke Fukugawa, and good parts of the plot (like the text stories, world concept and characters) were done by Kiyoshi Shigematsu), while the games Sakaguchi did have more input on are the ones nobody remembers. What input Sakaguchi DID have on the good entries with his name slapped on them were so absolutely minuscule, and usually rewritten/designed by other people anyway.
@@Zelink108 Whats your beef with Sakaguchi? You do realize he didn't have complete control over the direction the company was taking at the time and raised a lot of concerns that were ignored by the company board as a whole?
Mad Mental Hibby Like what? I have nothing against Sakaguchi as a person, but when it comes to game design I really wish people would stop glorifying him.
This is the man who was entirely responsible for The Spirit's Within. A movie so bad it damn near ruined the company, and is the main reason why Square has been so shit afterwards. Even when his name was being paraded around for FFXV, it still turned out to be a train wreck.
He also wanted FFIX/X and every game onwards to have PlayOnline integration.
Ballsrog You just didn’t like that it wasn’t the Saturday morning cartoon black and white bs that IX had.
Oaoj Ordep Does that mean anything? No. He's also said in the past that V is his favourite. Does that mean that V should be placed at the top of every list entirely because the creator “claims” it? Again, no. We should grade a game based on that game's merits, not a nice statement a producer said about an upcoming game.
Who gives a darn what the guy that made blue dragon and the Spirits Within movie has to say? Are the Star Wars prequels automatically masterpieces because Lucas says so?
The last line you said before credit roll really hit home. I had a childhood friend who had bought the game before a weekend sleepover as his family was out of town, and we got to the part where Zidane needs support at the end of the weekend, with those heavy, thrumming drum beats. Dum...Dum... Du-du-dum, Thank you for letting me remember that piece of my childhood, Austin.
In the FF golden age, my friends were all about VII and VIII, and I alone stood up for IX, my favorite in the main series. At that time I thought IX was underaprecciated, but now, there's so many FFIX is underapreciatted articles and videos, that I no longer considered that to be the case. IX is the main creator favorite, is always in the top 3 of any "Final Fantasy games ranked" lists, is a critical darling, so I am really happy the game does have the recognition it desserves.
Anyone else think that Beatrix is just, like, super *hot*? Like, dayum.
Yeah shes great looking, strong etc. worthy of the 'rose of may' one of the best tracks in the game, but garnet will always be my original waifu. She actually impacted the girls i dated or tried to date lol. Playing that game as kid it was the first romance line i enjoyed.
I guess you never had sex in your life so I don't wonder that a comic character seems hot for you 😂
She's my favourite character. Like, she's one big paladin dork (like Stiener) and her love hate relationship with Adelbert Stiener is one of the best in the series. Fight me
We’re gonna talk about the music later?
*slams fist on table*
We need to discuss the genius misdirection of The Wavering Blade as Beatrix’s theme before The Red Rose scene and we need to discuss it now!
Final Fantasy IX was the first FF I ever played and it blew me away. It's my all time favourite game and forever will be 🤓 it really warms my heart to see someone talk about it the way you have in this video. It's very inspiring and I think I may make my own video on this at some point ☺
I was genuinely excited to see you talking about FFIX as it's one of my top three favorite FF games (sandwiched between FF Tactics and FFVI) and I feel it's always been criminally overlooked due in large part to its celebrating "classic" Final Fantasy games. A friend of mine actually refused to play it due to the stylized characters until I pointed out that they're essentially a 3D reimagining of the big headed sprites from 2D FF, which got him to try to game years later and now it's one if his favorites. Cant wait for Part 2!
I, an old head, can't say that this was my favorite. I gotta be loyal and say FF7 was, BUT 9 had a lot of good things going for it. I especially loved the way the job classes were built into the characters, and that Zidane was a thief not a crystal Knight or some such. This game took a very non-standard approach to story telling that I really appreciated, building our understanding of each character and their story individually.
Final Fantasy 7 might be my favorite, but when people who have never played the franchise before ask which one they should play, I always tell them Six and/or Nine. I just feel like they have some of the most approachable characters and stories, plus their difficulty curves are pretty steady.
The Aladdin part got me laughing so hard. Especially when it just says "Moogle" instead of Abu.
FFIX was the first FF game I beat. I deleted my file right at the end boss and needed to play the whole thing through a second time that balmy summer but I did it and I remember beating it at 1am and just full body sobbing at the ending. I wanted to run into my parents room and tell them why I loved it and why it made me cry but there was no way to explain to two adults who had never touched a video game how unique of a storytelling experience a JRPG is. It's been almost 20 years since that time and this video makes me REALLY want to pick it up again.
Thanks for making this!
Absolutely by far my most favorite FF game, glad you're talking about it Austin. Xoxo
AW HELL YEAH 9 is my absolute favorite! Love the story, characters, and ideas. Also Freya is best FF girl
100% Rat girl best girl.
Final Fantasy IX was (and probably still is) my favorite final fantasy. Crazy how much I was into it when it came out.
ff9 was the first ff I beat, so it holds a special place for me.
I want to scream from how much i'm happy this video exists.
Still, through the years, ever since i first played it, i think FF9 is THE best Final Fantasy, and definitely my favourite, but often, ultimately, overlooked and in the shadow of 7, 8 and even its older sister, 6.
Sure, 9 is far from perfect, and it kinda feels rushed with certain story elements (rip Freya), but still, even WITH all the flaws it's still better than all Final Fantasies, only on par with its older sister, 6, which is not surprising, considering literally the same team created 9, so of course both of those are and should be considered the best.
Thank you man.
I really hope you focus more on just how freaking awesome the music is in this game. The part of the story where "You Are Not Alone" plays is one of the most powerful moments in the game, and the music sends chills up my spine every time I think about it.
Great video! Finally playing it through. Never got past the first disc back in the day. The story has aged like fine wine.
nice to see you talk about this game I too feel like it doesn't get enough love despite doing so many things well it is probably the final fantasy I have replayed the most just cause I love the story and gameplay so much heck I might replay it again this week just cause you put the thought in my head can't wait to hear your critiques I am so biased when it comes to this game I honestly want to hear them just to get another perspective on this game that I adore I also love the soundtrack the most I constantly catch myself singing melodies of life to myself or humming some other piece of music from the game to myself I love the designs as well and Amarant just might be my favorite ff character but I digress great vid can't wait to see part 2
I ended up getting Final Fantasy VII through IX all at the same time when I got my ps2 and IX was my favorite, even before X came out.
FF9 for me is the Perfect jrpg there is no other that gives me the feelings that this game does ♥️
Akiin Moonlight A relatively simple battle system too, which makes it nice and accessible for anyone as an entry title
A video about my favorite Final Fantasy? Hell yeah!!
The editing and jokes in here (It's a *MIST*ery) gave me great laughs.
It's been a minute since I've last checked out one of your vids and this reminds me of why I'm subscribed. Thanks for making this video, you've know got me actively searching for a way to play IX thanks to this!
Happy New Years, Austin!
This game was made after I was born by two months but still I went back and played it and I'm so glad I did, it's my 2nd favorite FF, right after FF5
"The better than expected XV"
You lost me there
I have wanted to play ff9 for years but this is the thing to push me over the edge to finally do it. Thanks Austin!
9 is a damn treasure. 10 will probably always be my favorite, but 9 is a close second.
Great video, but I just want to say one thing, if anyone is interested in playing it, please consider playing it on a CRT, ideally using original hardware. The Final Fantasy IX Remaster is fatally flawed in many ways, and the Playstation version is honestly better in most respects but resolution. Playing on a CRT drastically improves the look of the game, and makes the incredibly-low resolution backgrounds look great! And the FMVs look way less compressed.
Or at least, use a mod to upscale the graphics and reimplement the removed analogue control.
THIS IS WHY I STAN YOU!!! FF9 FINALLY GETTING LOVE?!! YAAAAAAS!
I’m so relieved you appreciate this game’s soundtrack as much as they deserve.
Love your content Austin, really thankful you didn't just go into spoilers/full story breakdown a lot of other analysts do. I watch a lot of these videos of games I haven't played and I hate it when the youtuber just breaksdown the story instead of talking about game mechanics that make it worth playing. This feels like a friend telling you what makes a game good and why you should play it. Your content is excellent as always. Not sure if you will see this but keep up the great work.
When people says FF9 is really ''underrated'' and ''deserves more'' I always wonder what they really mean or want. A sequel? An expansion (a la Crisis Core)? A ''remake'' (reboot like FF7)? Merchandise? Novels? Movie?
Mainly I think they just mean it should be mentioned more and talked about it and remembered. It just gets overlooked, thats all
@@kidicaras2719 As a sane FF7 fan. I say realistcally FF9's problem it's more the fact that is overshadow by FFX. Frankly both of them are kinda way similar in many things.
@@kidicaras2719 Not the settings, but thematically.
- Zidane & Tidus (cheerful protagonists, yeah the latter changes along the journey but still maintans his motto ''gonna help everyone around here'').
- Yuna & Garnett (both summoners, have a dutty to help their people, but I feel Yuna was presented better, well at least for me),
- Kuja and Jetch were not bad guys actually, just misunderstood.
- Both deal with the theme of death (but X had a better twist, imo.)
- Even Auron and Vivi are destined to die.
Yeah, I'm aware FF9, FFX & FFXI were developed concurrently, perhaps some ideas were shared here and there and polished in X.
@@kidicaras2719 That said, both are good games and while I agree other FFs deserve more attention and to be re-explored, mainstream success ain't that great either sometimes.
X-2, VII Compilation & FFIV After Years were ok to mediocre, and I'm cautious of the VII remake aswell.
@@kidicaras2719 Well, FF don't have the best records in other media:
- FF2, 3, 10, 12, 13 & 15 had manga/novels or both.
- FF5: The Legend of the Crystals, FF: Unlimited, The Spirits Within movie, Kingslave.
All of that did poorly.
This game brings back memories of pretending to be asleep and watching my mom play it on the tv
Coming across ur channel is like discovering a new amazing show on netflix. Subscribed.
This was my introduction to the series as a player, and is still my favorite FF nearly 15 years later. It has the perfect mix of drama, action, and humor that hasn't been matched since imo. That and a main protagonist that didn't start out with a personality drowned in some sort of despair.
While FFIX didn't sell as well due to an untimely release I find it strange to say it deserves more when my experience is that most FF fans and critics consider it the best crafted FF in the series even by those whose favorite isn't FFIX.
My favorite FF is FFVII, but I still consider IX the better game.
FFIX has the best romance story
That scene at ending with Zidane coming back is bring joy to my heart. Also Dagger easily one of the most badass Fem Protagonist.
not to mention the best ass, so soft.
@@alsaiduq4363 Uggghhh yes! My feelings are all over the ending
@@Houldey Best butt
@@Houldey That ass Kreygasm.
Beatrix music is amazingly beautiful.
Had to watch the video more than 2 times. The sound clip you play when someone is hit is just hilarious!!!

Quina's not even human lol.
I freakin’ love IX! It was my very first Final Fantasy and will always have a special place in my heart.
Silent Hill didn't use prerendered backgrounds, they made all the areas in the game with in game graphics specifically to differentiate itself from resident evil and so they could switch between fixed camera angels, a cinematic moving camera, and a player controller camera, which the latter two can't be done with prerendered backgrounds
