  • ‘LESSON LEARNT’
Harsh weather doesn’t phase me and wresting hard with a large tent in it is just a challenge. My problem was that in all the excitement I stupidly forced the zip to shut the tent door and it came off its rail. The smallest part of a wild camping kit but has no tolerance on failure especially is harsh weather. Maybe my brain is smaller but after this it has grown just slightly😂.
So the lesson is… be careful with your zips!
Enjoy your adventures and learn as you go
    All love
    Al and Blue

@@BUSHMANandBLUE Only wimps give up! 😂😉
Another good watch mate, especially nice to see those beautiful iced-up waterfalls.
I think we all do things differently in life and make personal decisions in any given situation. I would have stayed put and simply tied & staked down the flapping doorway for the night. Once the tent is up it's always safer in my opinion to stay put rather than negotiating a winter descent, especially if it's near dusk or during darkness.
Regarding the tent, regardless of conditions and your gloves' iced-up palms, a tent should withstand all the abuse you throw at it in all 4-season conditions...and that includes zips. Especially a brand new tent! I'd send it straight back to Fjallraven for a replacement with a note of how badly it failed. I've always let my sponsors know the positives and negatives of their products.
On the other hand, when shit hits the shovel during a windy, cold ❄️time on the high moors...A good pint 🍺 plus the cosiness and hearty grub at a proper English country pub, becomes a very strong pulling force! 😅

@@Globetrotter-1 A very good post here and regardless of your self condemnation on forcing the zip Al', in my view this was "Equipment failure". On this type of tent that people expect will house them safe and sound in extreme conditions, this should NEVER have happened. It leads one to wonder about all the other parts of the tent that could fail at the worst time. If anyone should learn from this excellent video, it's the manufacturers of the tent that need to listen and act very quickly indeed to ensure that the same thing never happens again!

Zips on tents are my biggest concern. Never underestimate the power of well made zips on a tent! One of the things I like best about my Durston tent is the zip, it never snags or catches, I have to be really careful with my Abisko lite 1 though as it catches all the time if not.

You should try the Nortent Vern PC 1. It's a pollycotton tent that is quick to pitch in the most demanding conditions. It's warmer in cold weather and cooler in hot weather versus silnylon. Yes it's heavier than a silnylon tent, but bombproof it is.
What I do in severe weather is get the base of the tent staked out before inserting the poles.
Love your video's and stringent focus on safety. Throw some snow from me for Blue.

Those snowy hills and stream area were so beautiful. I'm impressed that you even considered trying to stay a night in such high winds -- not only hard to set up, but I wouldn't have gotten a wink of sleep in conditions that noisy with wind. Your tent failure situation reminded me why I've shifted over from backpacking and tent camping, to trips where I go dayhiking and sleep every night on a real bed in my camper van. Nothing like a metal (or wooden) structure to protect you from the elements! So much more cozy and comfy than a tent. I do not look back fondly on nights spent with tent fabric flapping furiously around or moisture condensing on the sagging tent walls, or the leaks, uncomfortably cramped conditions and all the other tent hassle. Glad to be done with that.

Wow Al. Very harsh conditions. I bet that pint tasted extra good ! For me in that wind i would struggle with that tent design. Pole sleeves on a dome are a nightmare to get the tent up in wind. No doubt very strong once up, but that would be pitching before the storm hits. You cannot beat a build from ground up clip system in high winds. A tunnel design with pole sleeves a close second. Fair play to you for even getting the tent pitched in the first place. As you say every day in the hills is a school day and that’s one of the reasons I love getting out. No two days are the same. Cheers mate.

What an adventure, that was some bad luck with the team. It would have been a great test for that Tent in the show & wind. That was definitely the correct call to back up and head back, that would have been an unconfinable night if you had stayed. The pub food looked great will have to check the walk & the pub out next time I am up north. Good to see you both back safe and sound. Looking forward to the next adventure.😊

Hi Al, I've been following your content for a while and its good to see the channel growing! As you're probably aware the x-mid tents are becoming very popular and while a lot of videos are on RUclips about them, I haven't seen anyone put one through the sort of conditions that you test tents. Would love to see you do a video on this and I'm sure it would be a very popular video. Keep up the good work :)

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  Год назад +1

@@BUSHMANandBLUE Yeah it seems to have an almost cult like following. They seem to be an all around kind of tent than specific to a certain use, so it might be trying to cover too much. However would be cool to see what it can handle. Side note, i have to say your fold out cook setup is a really neat idea!

Would it have helped (in terms of setting up the tent) to stake all 6 corners to the ground first? We hope that Fjallraven gets the zipper fixed so that you can use and enjoy the tent! We ordered an Abisko dome 2 (still waiting to receive it), which is a less heavy-duty tent, but same basic design. So, we are super curious to see how your tent will perform in the wind. Be safe, have fun, thanks for all your great video's.

Great choice in tent 😉. Ideally and normally I’d peg it down first but it kept pulling the pegs out so I got the poles in to try keep it’s shape. It’s a two man tent that needed two people to pitch in that really 👍
