  • Day three of my Bibbulmun Walk saw me progress south from Beraking to Canning Shelter. The crux of today’s walk was the climb over Mt Dale however apart from that climb the walking today was fairly easy without to much elevation changes to deal with.

Looks like cycads with the grass trees. Great scenery, tracks, shelters, signage and facilities. Just don't expect any solitude at your camps.

I couldn’t believe how many people were out thru hiking a 1000 kilometre trail😳

Is the Mad Axeman still wandering up and down the track?? There used to be a couple of individuals that lived on the track... they'd get off and on as the saw fit. Legends of the track 👌

lol… I haven’t bumped into too many strange characters on the track so far… actually, I’m probably the strange one🤣👍

Must be nearly 20 years since I bumped into the Mad Axeman at Donnelly River. I had seen his name numerous times in the logbook huts. A very pleasant fella. He was getting on in age then and I have doubts he would still be out there. He had end to ended several times and as you say was a legend. Just had a look at the Bibbulmun Track Site, there is a write up Jim Freeman aka the Mad Axeman, began walking the track in 1976 and was a caretaker of the track for 20 years. 14 end to end treks. Truly a legend.
A poem taken from the website written by the Mad Axeman.
I’m the axeman mad, but I’m not as bad, as you hear some people say
I may look green, but that don’t mean, that I can’t walk all day
I set a good pace, with whiskers on my face, and I don’t have a wash for days
For the dirt will keep till the end of the week, that’s the true mad axeman’s way
I cook my tucker in a baked bean tin, boil my tea in a rusty can
I’ve a jam tin cup, and I wash up, in the same dish I use as a fry pan
Last thing at night, I blow out the light and I snore myself to sleep
I don’t comb my hair, coz there ain’t none there, and I never wash my feet.

Hey Kevin, I don't think there was a hut on Mt Dale where you saw the picnic table, but Mt Dale used to be one of the few established trails in the area back in the 90s and the Mount Dale Circuit was once considered one of the best in the state (before better trails superseded it). There is also a lookout reachable by car which was also popular as a picnic spot at one time.
Nice to see Canning campsite is looking okay. It was only metres from being destroyed in a fire a few years back and I've not been there since 2015.

I though maybe an old hut got burnt down or something 😉👍

Would you recommend the Heysen or this track as a first like long hike, the longest walk I have done is the Grampians peaks trail.

The Bibb is arguably better set up with signage and huts than the Heysen… I loved the lack of other people on the Heysen, however for a first thru hike it is probably better to have a few other walkers around like you get on the Bibb I guess🤔👍
