In this video, I head out on an epic winter wild camp on the summit of Y Foel Goch (2,641 ft) in Eryri National Park. Using the Hilleberg Soulo Black Label tent, a four-season solo shelter that can withstand the harshest weather conditions. Watch as I brave the blizzard conditions with whiteouts and freezing temperatures down to minus 9 degrees celsius in the wind. The hike in was brutal, taking in the summit of Gallt Yr Ogof first at (2,503 ft) before dropping down to the majestic col before Foel Goch. This was a true test of survival and endurance in the wild, in an area I have never hiked, let alone camped; with whiteout conditions on the descent requiring careful navigation skills. A few fine craft beers and a mini bottle of red saw the perfect end to a birthday wild camping celebration as I turn 42 on the day this video releases! The stunning scenery of the majestic Glyderau was dressed in a perfect winter coat of snow and ice - this was the best wild camp that I have ever experienced! I know this video is 'long' for RUclips - but I didn't want to cut out the fantastic experience and want to keep the memories for when I'm not able to do this anymore.

Is the rain coat waterproofing a rubbish surface finish or full gore tex? the finishes in my opinion all wear off. we need coats that last 30 years not 3 years. finishes imo opinion cannot be made good, nikwax re-proofer is too gentle organic to be any good imo, I've got three waterproof coats all no longer waterproof. I'm thinking all rubber or full gore tex, non of these other finishes. are much cop, and the brands degrade too quick to trust. truly wonderful drone shots in the morning.
Good thoughts there and who knows! The cynic in me says that if they made the coating to never wear off, we would never buy a new jacket! I've had good results with Nickwax, but like you say it wears off too quickly. Liking the idea of Paramo jackets and doing some research on them at the mo......

Hello from NZ, the world becomes a different place when the snows come, but what a place!! I could feel the cold through my screen. I just love being on the 'tops', it's magical. On some of our ranges we have eternal snow, but you have to climb higher for that. I'm constantly in the mountains and have been for 50 + years. Great video 👍 but the hilleburg is definitely not a bomb proof tent! I’ve seen them fail many times in the wind unfortunately! I think there just becoming a fashionable tent to have now on RUclips! I use the Nordisk Svalbard on the mountains, it’s built like a tank.
Cheers for watching! Respectfully disagree with your comment about Hilleberg being fashionable for RUclips - tried and tested brand with real pedigree and used in the harshest places of the world. I've owned the Soulo for around 8 years and used in a variety of conditions, some extreme. Never failed, only once had a pole bend slightly in extreme winds - Hille replaced the pole section without question. It's a great tool for a job 👍 Nordisk make some superb tents, the Svalbard is nice. Low profile to shed wind, although not much space. I have the Telemark 2.2LW, Oppland and Halland 2LW, fantastic. The continuous decline in quality equipment is no accident mate, it is engineered that way. We call it in the manufacturing process "Planned Obsolescence", how else can manufacturers get you to buy equipment more often? Your old jacket was made prior to the new profit driven mindset in quality standards. I'll bet you a pint that even the Hillberg's quality has gone down a bit. Whatever, but thank you for video it was terrific.
I know that happens with smart phones etc, they weird begin to slow down over the years. It's a shame, that Mera Peak is great still (aside from the elastics which I can hopefully swap out). I hope Hilleberg have maintained their quality - I have only owned them since 2016 so can't speak prior to that. I know they pride themselves on hand producing every tent still and using the finest materials, so for me this goes someway to reassure. ATB and thanks for watching

Haha, love it. I've actually got most of my old gear, I tend to hoard stuff! Each to their own I guess, but I'm not sure how you can take a tent out of a bag and claim that it can beat tent a, b, c etc - without having used it extensively in a range of conditions. I have used the MSR Access on many camps and in varying weather conditions, but still not in any position to make a review on it - credibility is very important to me. I took some bits out of this video, esp after a few beers - and many channels are becoming nothing more than an advertisement, rather than focusing on the beauty of wild camping itself. I've been guilty of it myself to a degree, but firmly going the other way now. Thank you for watching pal.

I've followed the channel for many years now Chris. I've watched camps in the lakes, the pennine moors and enjoyed the Halloween specials on pendle hill and October camps with the lads. I've enjoyed gear reviews and made a few purchases thanks to mcm outdoors.
We've all watched you go through hard times and come out the other side and watched nostalgic walks from your childhood where you talk about mindfulness and have no doubt helped and inspired people not to mention you getting out with your kids and other youtubers. I've sat in on the live chats and asked questions.
I have to say though that this video was probably my favourite mcm video yet. It had everything. The build up and walk to the camp and the sense of relaxation when you pitched up really came across. That morning....wow, I got a bit emotional to be honest.

I bought the thermarest 'chair ' that slips over mat.Comfortable and great back support,because it is so low to the ground you can use it in a tent.weighs very little also.
Yeah, I've got one mate - the 'trekker' chair...... I just don't know whether I trust it not to damage the mat ?

Berghaus definitely gone downhill, owned by JD sports now I believe, hence the catering to the 'yutes' Montane took over -funnily enough also from the North East of England. Re Mera Peak - they released the 2000 version recently, based on the old 90s shape with the drawstrings etc. I found a mint condition turquoise 90s one in a charity shop for 40 quid, sold it for 150. Folk asking 200 for them nowadays. Legendary jacket nonetheless. Awesome upload mate, really enjoyed it!

Happy boffday😊. A quick question, how d you attach your gloves to your jacket? Is it a primary school hack with elastic up the sleeves and across your shoulders?. I'm asking cos I got some posh gloves from GO... shudda bn 75£ but got em for 45£ . Love to know ?? 🙏👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers mate! These gloves have elastic loops already attached - but you could easily fashion some up yourself with some elastic! You could go old skool with elastic up the sleeves etc, or depending on what gloves they are, fashion something elastic around each wrist 👍
Unfortunately a lot of outdoor brands have become leisure high street brands and less technical- Berghaus, Sprayway, Tog 24, The North Face. Like you I’ve still got some quality old gear in these brands before they sold out.
It's a real shame! I wonder why that is?

Berghaus 'Extrem' gear is still some of my favourite. I prefer the original Extrem gear, I think it's a little more durable. Not common on the hill either, which is another upside.

Hi Chris a hot tent 🏕️ is better in the Winter 🥶 you would have to buy a wood 🪵 stove make sure the rating on it on how much heat comes out of it just a tip 😊

Your right about the older labels being some of the best,when the companies started clawing in the expenditure on the quality they killed the brands themselves..they should have stayed true to themselves and not gotten so greedy & hopped on the disposable society train.

Yes, many brands which were superb, have now become 'high street' brands, with quality falling by the wayside...... it's a shame. That's why I like Scandinavian gear so much - many of those brands do not sacrifice quality for margins! The original Mera Peak was outstanding - other than the elastics, it's pretty much 8/10 condition - I really try and look after my gear, was overly so at one point but it's got to be used at the end of the day - a few minutes at the end of a trip etc, sees the gear right for many years to come hopefully. Spot on, I just stick the spikes on if need be. They will take a flexible crampon at a push. They're a soft boot, but very comfortable.

And on brands I completely agree. Berghaus, Craghoppers, Karrimor….all mass produced cheap Chinese high street fashion tat these days. I swore by Berghaus and Karrimor back in the day. I pretty much buy Mountain Equipment exclusively these days with other bits from Montane, Rab, Fjallraven etc. More expensive but I’d rather save and wait and get something that’ll keep me warm, dry and safe. At least it’s the real deal. 👍

On old gear: I still have a 30 year old Mountain Equipment gore-tex jacket (in old school shades of UV faded purple and blue!) that is still going strong and has been used walking/rigging/climbing. I've also got a 25 year old Keela Munro jacket which is the absolute bollocks of a thing - if it ever decides to die I will replace it with another in a heartbeat. Karrimor/North Face/Berghaus are now mainstream fashion brands for 90% of their gear - the older stuff is bombproof but the newer gear is just cheap. Margins are everything now it would seem

The Vern 1 looks good - but it's far too early to call at the moment and I don't think some of these grandiose claims can be made with any credibility to be fair - we will see. It would be interesting if you could check out the KUIU Storm Star. I’ve seen a few videos from other wild campers and it looks interesting in terms of wind stability and weight. Thanks for this vid…..in part of it you look like you could be in Antarctica ! Cheers !

Happy birthday! Another great video. Not sure if you are aware but Berghaus offer free repairs on their gear, the details can be found on their website. Might be worth seeing what they can do with that awesome jacket?

Kinda agree about Berghaus in a way, but I still use the Paclite waterproof trousers and I have a pair of boots which have lasted and I love.
I have looked after them mind with regular waxing.
Some of the items from the more fashionable (expensive) brands are not quite as good as they are made out to be...imo

Thanks mate - appreciated! Always worth taking time to look after your investment! Some of the Fjallraven gear is 'high street' ...... but those Keb trousers are superb, lasted for years and really are good. I always wear a pair of cheap but effective Ronhill tracksters under them - unbeatable combination! I love how the outdoor gear scene is so diverse and subjective; people have brands they love and remain loyal to - ultimately because they associate those bits of gear with fantastic memories in our great outdoors - even when we disagree, we all have that in common! Awesome camp 😊 I've got a red Mera peak from 2005 still use it, Berghaus replaced the main zip for me free of charge ten years ago!!

It seems the Soulo has a new competitor with the 2024 Vern 1 tent . That's all I am seeing on RUclips lately. Nice wildcamp up there ! First time on your channel
Thanks for watching! I've never tried a Vern 1 although I hope to do so, until then - I could say or verify any claims about how it compares. Stay tuned though as I will give an honest opinion having used the Soulo extensively over many years 👍🏕️
Well you certainly are a braver fashion lion than I am! I have an old skiing jacket in that vibrant indigo colour and I absolutely love it. It's in good nick too. But it sticks out like a sore thumb in the slopes. So I don't. Good on you for looking past all that nonsense! 👏

Really enjoyable video, thanks Chris. I used to have a Mera Peak, a red one a long time ago. I loved it, brilliant bit of kit, but got rid when it lost its waterproofing ( I had no idea at the time you could renew this yourself). Berghaus now have a free repairing service, you only pay for postage to them. May sort out the elastic issue, and possibly the waterproofing. Worth a go. Oh, and happy birthday!
Good shout that....... I'll email Berghaus and see what they say. Just needs the waist and bottom elastic sorting - other than that, all good. The elastic seems anchored in place in a fabric channel, so not sure how I would reattach it unless I unpicked the stitching (which won't be happening) haha

What a lovely vid Chris, truly stunning, epic scenery. The Hilleberg truly is a brilliant tent Allthough I will admit I sold mine in favour of a tarptent Scarpe 1. It was condensation issues that did it for me in the end. I see your rocking the fjallraven kebs, a brilliant all round pair of trousers I allways revert to.
