The Wergchechel is something used across germanic europe to Dispell Night-Mares-Literally, the Demons that sit on your chest and cause you to have nightmares, sucking out your soul and life force, crushing your lungs in your sleep etc etc. It can be used to string wool across to make twine/thread and fabric fibres as a normal everyday device also! But larger versions are specifically for warding off those chest-sitting spirits.
My dutch-american family (strange as they were) believed that Cats would sit on your chest while you rested in order to steal your soul - Not true about cats, but who knows about nightmares lol.
Also thank you so much for covering this game - its such a cool game and it seems to have flown right under the radar. I believe it deserves more love all around, and thank you for showing it some!!
Omg of course!! Just like the painting "the nightmare" by Henry Fuseli, who was from Switzerland!! Thank you for this, I wish I could go back in time and add it to the video tho lol!
@@chocolatebunnies6376 definitely. If you look up germanic nightmare traditions you should be able to find better examples of multi-cultural tools, art + ideas!
I love the straightforward but funny tone of this video. The "FUCK i forgot" really got me, and ironically the zoom ins did help me notice different things about the game
The way this game isolates you by speaking Romansh reminds me of how Midsommar isolates the audience by speaking in Swedish with no subtitles to translate
A little trivia of note is that the game contains some diversions from the actual Mundaun irl: While Rumantsh is a language that was spoken there back in time if we look at the map at 1:18 it's actually one of those white dots that indicate lack of Rumantsh nowadays - people speak Alemannic there for a while now. Ingame the direction of the sun indicates it was on a southern slope & it's actually on a northern slope of a mountain irl. Those mountains have also never been a country border since the unification of the Three Leagues. Some more trivia about the game: There's hidden locations such as a cave in the first area where you may encounter the Old Man before the barn fire, the 2 goats Black and White will either allow or not allow you to pet them depending on if you have the Old Man's mark on your hand, also the file lockers in the Old Man's house reveals that everybody in the village has his own dedicated file case including the priest which is indicated by the symbols on them.
Also about the bee keepers: The game actually features all forms of alpine economy in this way. Agriculture in the sense of fields is only sparse while other things like livestock (goats) and apiculture (bees) are easily conducted for sustainance. The last area of the game being ski-tourism is also a more recent form of economy (which is also dying out again due to climate change).
When I played this I thought for the longest time Flurina was supposed to be already devil possessed, she looks so damn evil. So the ending really confused the Hell out of me.
Being utterly flashbanged by the Black Spider, which was mandatory reading for our class back in (the German equivalent of) High School. Honestly one of the better books we read.
If someone has already posted this, ignore me. The scene where the old man’s giant reflection is seen in the lake is very similar to Faust (1926) where a scene involves the demon Mephisto standing as a giant over a city as he rains plague and death on the people below. As a story detailing a man selling his soul to the devil, it’s a nice touch. Great video by the way.
You have no idea what a stroke of fortune was that the algorithm recommended your channel to me with this particular video! Recently, in college, I have been taking a literature course that focuses mainly on horror. This video of your gameplay really made me rethink folk horror as a genre. My father's family is pennsylvanian german, So the family is originally from a specific region in switzerland. It's strange how the geographical region, of Mundaun, with its customs, bears an uncanny resemblance to the old culture in Pennsylvania, despite being a Romance-influenced language. In the game's story, the elements of people being agents of a dark entity and the dark entity representing the devil being present in human form, also bear resemblance to Pennsylvanian German folklore. Thank you so much for making this thought-provoking and quality video. I really hope that you have heaps and heaps of success with your channel! You just got one loyal subscriber right now!
Growing up in the region close to Mundaun, I of course liked this game a lot. It‘s a shame that it did not get more attention.. good work with the video!
Thank you for pronouncing the names ccorrectly! Other reviewers or essayists always pronounce them the English way even though they are said the correct way in the game.
wait what, this vidoe is amazing im surprised the algorithm suggested me such a cool video idea made by someone competent and funny. i am HERE for more videos of you breaking down horror games and movies in this style that is half synopsis, half commentary, half educational its really great.
Hey! I hope you still check the comments here. You can't disable achievements, but you can stop them from popping up and making noise by right clicking the game in steam, clicking properties, and disabling the steam overlay on that game! The downside is a game will break/not work if it uses links or anything that opens the browser through the overlay
I thought you were a million sub channel at first; the quality is identical to popular creators! You're awesome man, I hope the joy of making videos keeps you going.
I'm so happy I clicked this video to kill my boredom, I am so happy I found your channel this way, so far after watching this I've seen your video about the game Detention, I must say, I love the way you talk about not just made up horror but very human aspects of things surrounding the foundation of those games, the references, the deeper meanings, what I want to convey here is that I am looking forward to more of your videos, you don't just sound smart, you geniuenly have the knowledge and are capable of presenting it in a very simple way that anyone could understand. Thank you for making those, I'll be awaiting more my friend
i really love your style of story telling that combines detailed, passionate and serious analysis with memes!!! keep up that work!!! its so nice to relax to one hour long horror games analysis in the evening. thanks!! :)
27:28 That's funny, I heard a version of the devil's bridge story all the way here in Quebec! There was that one bridge that kept falling apart as it was built (the Quebec Bridge), and the devil came and made a deal foreman and everything. In the end, it was cat that was thrown (rather literally in the version I heard) across the bridge instead of a goat. The thing that's rather surprising about it though is that this bridge is WAY more modern than the one you're showing. The bridge was built in 1919! Rather fascinating how old stories, probably brought over by French settlers centuries before, found new life in relatively recent events.
Seems likely, I've heard the same story about at least two different medieval bridges in Southern France - although the versions I've heard have either a cat, a goat, or a huntsman's dog crossing the bridge! It's always pretty funny to me to see those folk tales pop up all over the place, people adapting it to their locale, but the fact that it's being retold accross the ocean from here, for a bridge built barely a century ago is kinda wild!
The humor in your content is hilarious. Didn’t even realized you were only have like 9k subs. The story telling are so good. Definitely Deserves lots of likes and view, keep it up man
"Too late hahaha I already have devil herpes" caught me so off guard 😂I found your vid/channel thanks to the algorithm and am so happy for it. The calm way of talking with occasional memes, your choice of game and exploring, explaining and diving in are my type of fav content. Please keep up the good work!
Wow, great video man. Really quality break down with research. Keep it up, I look forward to seeing more video essays/analyses. Holy shit that’s the first time my name was a character in a game, that I’ve seen yet, at least. Almost want to go play it even after watching regardless.
This came into my recommended and, though I've never heard of this game, I really enjoyed learning about it through your video. Your editing is very good and I enjoyed your humor throughout. I hope you continue to make videos and that you grow.
I loved the video and that you actually put in all the work in finding out about the book and folklore references all over the history. Maybe if you tried learning all the names you couldnt pronounce it would give it more depth and athmosphere because sometimes the google translate voice caught me off-guard
I believe the hanged man and the meat might be a reference to the old man being a cannibal, black smoke is used to dry meat and kill microorganisms on it, then they are put in a cold place, similarly both condition are meet here, we have meat, black smoke, and coldness, but what about the hanged man, that's why I believe whoever did this (most likely the old man) is a cannibal, why old man, well when he teleports black smoke appears, idk if it's true or not but, this is the best thing I can come up with. Edit: I should also mention this, when you look at the mirror your right eye is complete white, this is possibly a reference to dajal or antichrist, he doesn't have the right eye or he has it but it's completely white.
There's also what I call "the really bad ending", where you kill the painter, but still allow the contract to happen, so Flurina ends up being posessed.
youtube didnt notify me of so many damn videos dude, and im pissed. i fell in love with your silent hill 3 videos, and ever since detention i had no idea you made any other videos. i love your content, good job my dude
im sorry i want to gatekeep you so bad but you deserve so much views. i love the style and topics you talk about, and i really enjoy your introspective opinions and thoughts on topics. the topics you cover are so niche and underated like you, thank you for making videos
as a swiss i'm so impressed by the cultural aspect of the game and the athomosphere, people talking romanish. the whole thing with the masks, the carneval. swiss alps have something very creepy and ominious and there should be more and more swiss horror content. because switzerland has really weird stuff like the devils stone, devils bridge, wallaisian carneval "tscheggete" which is a super creepy carneval. the tunnel opening for gotthard was really creepy as well, almost satanistic. you can even check it out on youtube. i could never watch it til the end bc it's so creepy and made me feel uneasy
Might sound kinda strange but this game reminds me so much of the Radiohead Exhibition game on the Epic Store. In its own way even without a plot, the exhibition is somewhat horror like, and mixed with how artistic it is, just fits well with this I think
Great video. I have some questions about the story, however. Spoilers: I may be forgetting some crucial details, but who cut off the head of Allegria and why? There is of course the cutscene in the cave when the devil is tricked, but even this doesn't show the act, and it's unclear when this happened. Why would they need to cut off the head of the animal if it was useless to the devil anyway? I can't even say I understand how the head was taken out of the cave. How did Giovanni free the devil? I assume he drew the devil in a moment of inspiration, thereby bringing him into reality and freeing him from the mountain prison? What exactly was the role of Flurina? What were her powers? I found her too enigmatic. I expected her to speak to me by the end and to open up, but she remained mute for the entire story. Thanks.
Ah, well that makes me feel a little better. I can cope with the last two questions remaining unanswered, but the situation with Allegria should be a simple affair. I enjoyed the game enough to not let these issues bother me, but I'm still hoping someone here can answer my questions. Thanks again for making this in-depth video. @@FreddyDude
