That last letter sent to the friend has never quite left me, it is, in many ways, precisely what the turngait had tested Philip on, self sacrifice and thinking of the greater whole, but in the exact opposite way they had planned. They seemed to always focus on how humans could almost always be relied on to focus on themselves and not consider others, and after that test they assumed that he would work with and believe them, but after everything that the game showed him and his own personal friend that had rode with him for all of it, Philip doesn't trust them, and as such plans to be the kind of selfless person they wished him to be while being just as human as they thought he wasn't. After all, what would be more chaotic and selfless than asking a friend to kill them and everything in that tomb of a mine?
I think it's interesting- the hive mind preaches selflessness of the individual, but that's because its individuals are tools. Everything it does is to advance the mind's own ends. It's like saying we're not selfish because our cells all work together to make us- yet we are one consciousness! To do things for the benefit of those who are not experiencing your own consciousness is a level of selflessness that it is impossible for a hive mind ot comprehend!
37:42 He was there since he was 14. Red never got the chance to grow up. His body changed while his mind stayed the same. Essentially, the protag didn't just kill his friend; he also killed a child.... Im telling you I gasped, covered my mouth, and paused the video so fast! I've been sitting here contemplating this for longer than a minute. My heart. Broken. To peices.
I love the way that the tuurngait, a collective, only refers to philip and the other people as "mankind." It cannot truly comprehend individualism, despite the fact that it-being the collection of all inside it-is technically an individual. Therefore, it becomes the very irrational and violent being it claims humans are, infecting and killing those it sees fit. Such a beautiful hypocrisy. Penumbra is a wonderfully philosophical game, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Isnt every human an amalgamation of cells? Organs and tissues? Not to mention amputation is often used when poison, rot or infection are present. Such is the mind of Nature's children. Egomaniacal, selfish, and hipocritical.
And i thought Red's death hurt, then we get hit with Amabel's, who genuently was an angel, and angel who saw us as a savior and in turn Philip did too. Hell she even planned a happily ever after... That just hurt man...
I find it funny how Amabel Swanson has zero tact whatsoever, she also strangely acts without any real sense when it comes to what emotionally makes sense while still being really sincere.
I think it's maybe because Red altough turngait infected achieved some kind of individualism through reading Nietzsche, and Turngait hive mind found these ideas through him, so Turngait infected individuals had access to such ideas as Clarence did, and this is why he got individualistic. And maybe this is why altough already infected, other turngait individuals wanted to kill you
Imagine if in all this time, every time someone dies, they get to find out that every single person that lived was them? Every human that ever lived, suffered, and died was a single soul living simultaneously amongst each other. All the suffering one soul inflicted upon the other is a suffering he inflicted upon himself, every kindness he gave was a kindness he gave onto himself. How ironic a society of both collective and individual soul would be? A truly human-tuurngait existence.
Whose to say that's not the case? There's an idea that we are all just physical manifestations of "God". Every single living being is God expressing themselves in the physical realm. At least, that's the theory I've seen.
@@Lux_Ferox there's also a theory that it's more probable that we're just the imagination of a brain floating in space since that's apparently more probable than an entire universe making itself like ours did. Can you tell I watch Kurzgesagt yet😂
@@kingworm7168 The egg still uses multiple people, right. They were souls that fought for the chance to be reincarnated. And also I believe that once reborn, they would lose knowledge of the existence of the other plane as they grow up. Upon death, they then repeat the cycle. (not entirely sure about this, it's been a decade since I read it) So, technically, it's not that they were a hive mind, a singular mental organism or anything, but the lives lived were uniquely defined moments in that soul's existence. Each kindness and cruel circumstance would definitely add to the 'original' soul's experience, but at the time of living, that body, that mind was its own specific individual apart from its other compatriots.
I think that the name Clearance was chosen before the whole story was finished. Keep in mind, that in the movie Clarence appears to stop the protagonist from killing himself, when he wants to die. And Clearance stops him. I think that's why that name was chosen
1:37:44 "Human ingenuity arises from our propensity for making seemingly irrational decisions. Thank you so much for this.
Man, I love Penumbra. I enjoyed Amnesia, also, and got why it became as popular as it did, but I always found Penumbra to be far more actually psychologically scary. The entire game gives me the same feeling as the line of "They look like _monsters_ to you?" did in Silent Hill 3, and I had always wished more people knew about it. I know gameplay is a bit janky, but man, that _atmosphere..._ It just doesn't get much better than that.

With about over a decade since i first delved into Penumbra from the massive impact Amnesia The Dark Descent had for me back then. I can safely say, i adored this. Such an underappreciated gem from a bygone era, well deserving for a massively dedicated analysis video from a such a deeply passionate horror game buff as yourself. Seriously tho, Penumbra genuinly deserves to stand beside Amnesia yet sadly cant in the modern age. For this video, i thank you. Stay awesome fellow Mankind ^-^
Great video. I can't believe I almost forgot about this game. I didn't remember that much about the game itself but once Clarence's name came up, everything came back to me. Fascinating series truly, buried by Amnesia's overwhelming popularity. I'm glad someone out there is still making it the justice it deserves.
Red is a character that never really left the back of my mind, even more so than Clarence or anything to do with the Turngait. Just a boy left alone in the cold, dark for 30 years with nothing but books to keep him company. Ever encompassing madness, starvation, feasting on rats and fetid corpses, the intense desire for compainionship and friendship. You realize after you "set him free", that you also were part of the one way friendship with Red. You never actually conversed with him, so Phillip was in a similar situation to Red and perphaps could empathize with the man. So I think instead of the Eldritch horrors this game portrays as well, the realistic ones are so much sadder and horrific.
This very game has sparked my love for Frictional games and horror games in general. The love and passion they put into the story and mechanics, I am so happy someone has finally made a video about one of my first experiences with video games! I love this video, the care and effort really shows! Thank you! Makes me want to try again and pursue making games and art!
I jumped into the Penumbra games right when the first Anmesia came out. Both Red and Clarence fascinated me back then and you just reminded me why. Moreover, I am thrilled to have gotten further insights on what all characters in Penumbra were going through. I also think I agree with you, as evil as Clarence could get, I can't help but feel some sympathy for him. He was suddenly brought into existence as an individual, only to be sharing someone else's mind, not even body, so he was unable to manipulate things around him. His only way of interacting with the environment is by manipulating Phillip and ruminating in what his own being is (something that should be quite maddening...). Then by the time he could be considered his own 'man', he is severily punished by the supposedly 'benevolent' Tuurgait hive mind. His was a tragic existence. Again, fantastic analysis! Although I am surprised you did not make a mention of Requiem, I was expecting some further explanation of the puzzles you go through in that one.
Really love the channel and the way you look at the games story’s especially with the good music in the back I also love the editing thanks for uploading the gem of a game
If people want to play the Penumbra games today one tip I can give is that if you're having trouble, adjust your desktop & screen settings. Stuff like desktop resolution, DPI etc are used by the games. It's one thing I had to troubleshoot in order to stream them when I did.
What really shines about Frictional Games is their writing. It is just so compelling, I love them so. That and the way they use physics just makes their games feel so much more fun to play. It’s a small thing that ultimately only helps for some puzzles, but it’s fun to interact with these objects.

You sir, has managed to leave me thinking with the narration at the ending of the last game, great work!, I found your channel thanks to the Detention video, I tought I wouldn't like your sense of humor, but over time... I found it kind of endearing and decided to sub to your channel, glad I did, otherwise I would have missed that ending analysis :3 Awesome work! n - n
The end of Penumbra Overture traumatised me. The way Philip has to retrieve the key by activating the incinerator Red is locked in. I think it's the most horrible ending I've ever seen in a video game of this kind. Honestly excellent video man.
Amazing video, love to watch any review video of the Penumbra series. I do think it's quite underrated, even when it's the one game series to create Amnesia and then change the whole horror gaming genre. More should know about this iconic game series, and there aren't too many high quality videos of Penumbra just like this one.
Ive never seen this channel before but I'm deeply fascinated and entertained by your analysis. I remember old playthroughs of Penumbra, but never really saw the whole of it. Thank you for such an insightful dive! I'll have to look at your other works.
Today I had a weird dream about this game, but when I woke up I couldn't remember the name so I just started to google random sentences like "horror game in mines" lol. After finding out the name I stumbled upon your film. Penumbra was one of the first horror games that I watched on youtube in like 240p haha, while being 10 or 11 years old it was the most terryfing shit for me. Since then I fell in love with that genre. Now at 26 it feels nostalgic to see it again... Thank you for this essay, it was amazing experience to go through. Really great job, you deserve much more subs :)
Amazing video! Thank you for allowing me to experience this game in a way I wouldn't have been able to without your narration. Your content definitely deserves way more attention. Love the videos man
This came up on my recommended feed and, being a big fan of Frictional Games, I really enjoyed this revisit to Penumbra. I loved these games and they really are what began pulling me into the horror game genre. You did a great job covering the two games and I appreciated your humor. I hope to see more from you in the future!
Omg why am I always a week late, I was like periodically checking your channel waiting for this and then just was like hey I’ve run the bell on the channel I’ll get notified when it drops, but here we are and I’ve got something to watch before sleeping, thanks Freddy 🖤
I severely enjoyed that. As someone who would never play those games, I _do_ still want to have at least _some_ of that experience and you presented it very well, with a great blend of game footage/audio and personal insight and very nicely edited as well. Thanks.
The meme you put some time here and there in the video and not over doing it is very good. I really like the way you use meme to keep us attention and not over using it to the point it get annoying
I've been following your content for quite some time now and the way you edit and explain videogames and everything else is superb. I hope your channel grows fast soon, you deserve it!
I discovered your channel yesterday and started to watch some of your videos. Keep up the good work! I love how you edit your videos and how you explain things
This video was AMAZING!!!!! I first played penumbra at 17 years old and my english wasn’t very good, nor my mind was as developed as it is now. Revisit both games through your analysis was a great pleasure. I will replay them with your perspective in mind!
Dostoevsky didn't understand that what he termed 'irrationality" was either heuristic thinking or experimentation. Learning basic logic strips the profundity off most of philosophy.
Excellent video! I loved these games so much that I _preordered_ Amnesia (something I'd never done, and would not do again until TLOU Part 2). I clicked on this video thinking "ah, it's been a long time since I've seen someone play this game" and was pleasantly surprised that it was more of a summary/analysis. Immediate sub from me. Thank you!
I dont know how i encounter penumbra when i was 13 years old but it sparked my love for horror games, i loved that game altough i didnt understand anything cuz englisj is not my native language.
I'm genuinely astonished that this has so few views. The quality of this video essay is amazing and I love your sense of humour. A game that I didn't even know before made me think so many things thanks to you lol
I always wanted to finish this game, i played a bit of the first game, got stuck close to the start and never finished it. I was curious about what the story was though, that's why the game got to me actually and made me scared more than other horror media (not that i like or play a lot of horror). After a lot of years i wanted to install it again but i thought i could just see a let's play of it on yt... well now i don't have to do that either. Thanks for this video. I mostly listened to it so i can't say good job on it fully, but the narration was good. I understood everything even though i was playing a different game while listening. Cheers ! 🍻
36:00 - Idk why I had this thought, but if you're asking to die, why would you scream in such a manner when dying? I know it's basically the worst pain imaginable to be burned to death, but he was asking for it, ready for it even. Maybe he changed his mind after feeling the pain? Maybe I just had one too many safety meetings this morning.
It seems to be a natural acourance among all human beings. Although you might be, for all intents and purposes psychologically self destructive, there is always an innate drive to live, an innate self preservation wich you might say is beyond your control. In a way it fits very well with the games themes.

You sir, has managed to leave me thinking with the narration at the ending of the last game, great work!, I found your channel thanks to the Detention video, I tought I wouldn't like your sense of humor, but over time... I found it kind of endearing and decided to sub to your channel, glad I did, otherwise I would have missed that ending analysis :3
Awesome work! n - n
I really loved this one, very complex and psychological, i love this kind of game
0:26 Alright this bit alone made me a fan, subscribed 😂
Clarence's voice and the way he talks reminds me a lot of AM from ihnmaims, always taunting and messing with the player's reality
"this game is too scary"
clarence: "don't worry i gotchu"
Omg why am I always a week late, I was like periodically checking your channel waiting for this and then just was like hey I’ve run the bell on the channel I’ll get notified when it drops, but here we are and I’ve got something to watch before sleeping, thanks Freddy 🖤
Your editing made the analysis that much better
I'm bored out of my skull at work, so the timing of this video comes as a miracle cure. Thank you!
I love how the main character of Overture and his dad's names are just straight up pieces of H.P. Lovecraft's name
It's so on the nose but so good
I severely enjoyed that. As someone who would never play those games, I _do_ still want to have at least _some_ of that experience and you presented it very well, with a great blend of game footage/audio and personal insight and very nicely edited as well. Thanks.
The dad probably screaming at him saying you had one job.
20:33 ‘a pox on both your brain cells!’ is such a fun shakespeare reference
Instructions unclear. . . . I now have Gilbert Gottfried talking to me in my head. I now have Gilbert Gottfried talking to me in my head.
Hm, could've sworn you said that twice. Must've been deja-vu.
... oh.
The meme you put some time here and there in the video and not over doing it is very good. I really like the way you use meme to keep us attention and not over using it to the point it get annoying
agreed
I have been searching for this video for months, but couldn't find anything. Thank you. I never got to play penumbra (I was bad at it) so thank you :)
I've been following your content for quite some time now and the way you edit and explain videogames and everything else is superb. I hope your channel grows fast soon, you deserve it!
Just found your channel, I need more videos like this to binge
This is the best penumbra video on youtube 👍
Thank you irish empire.
I discovered your channel yesterday and started to watch some of your videos. Keep up the good work! I love how you edit your videos and how you explain things
Amazing video, got me immersed in the atsmofere you achieved. Hope this gets the recognition it deserves
Thank you!
Holy moly what a banger, thank you feddy
Hey buddy! thanks for the upload. this one is really good!
the wait for the shadow quad wasn’t that bad jeez man
The silent hill ost was a great choice for this video.
FUCKING ABSOLUTE KING FREDDA IS BACK LETS GO
I dont know how i encounter penumbra when i was 13 years old but it sparked my love for horror games, i loved that game altough i didnt understand anything cuz englisj is not my native language.
Finally, some good food. Now I can enlist
Your content is fantastic, I appreciate every video.
Penumbra certified kino. Red's death disturbed the shit out of me when I was a kid.
I'm genuinely astonished that this has so few views. The quality of this video essay is amazing and I love your sense of humour. A game that I didn't even know before made me think so many things thanks to you lol
I rly like your vid man, the black plague part could've used a bit of polish but the overture part is near perfection
0:27 "cerveza cristal😂" you unlocked a memory that was locked away deep in the singular crevace of my smooth brain
Very well done analysis of some of what i think are incredibly underrated and influential games, hope to see your take on the amnesia series!
This video is fantastic, I watched it in one go and the memes you added were perfectly timed!
@@FreddyDude sheesh, that is something to think about. That little fact makes a lot of character deaths that much more tragic 😅 excellent video Btw, very good work!!
😮 very well done. I really enjoy games of this flavor. Penumbra is one of my favorites.
THANK YOU you're my legit fave youtuber
I was surprised i got this recommeneded to me, because i heard your voice and i was like "Why do i know this guys voice?" then i realised you did the point and click horror game video
Bro i miss ur video sm 😭 always make my day!!!
I really enjoy your videos. One day your gonna make it dude.
The writer for this game is a real talent. Totally carried an otherwise very generic game, making it a very great game.
Such great analysis, you mentioned a lot of stuff that I missed, listening to your narration was a great expierence, thanks!!
Kinda idk disapointing the weirdo PSAs are associated with Analog Horror only- because before this it was more or less... "CIA Humour" I should call it.
The insane work standards and requirements done for "good of the mission and country", both hysterically funny and emencly dystopic
random but the catherine music in the bg gave me joy
Freddy coming at us with that Panumbussy
