you wanna know what would make that bo even cooler? if it could disconnect from the center snd be used as twin escrima sticks. (though I guess that would just make it into twin police batons....damn it.)
does anybody else get the same impression that this looks like Robin's collapsible staff from Teen Titans?.... and no I am not talking about the Teen Titans Go version
For anyone even thinking about actually ordering one of these I wanna point out a major flaw. This WILL NOT always close after combat or practicing actual hits. The metal no matter how strong will eventually bend and it would need to be taken apart just to fix it
I don't think it's really meant for actual hitting during training, but for conditioning. It would of course do fine in an emergency for self-defense, but to regularly hit with it might not be the best idea. It wouldn't replace a wooden staff, but complement it, and be a portable self-defense weapon.
+that kid likes anime I actually saw a video for a guy who made one of these out of two 32 inch long collapsible batons, I'm gonna take a flying guess and say that was the inspiration for this solid one instead of being screwed together at the bases like he did.
That was the first thing I though. Connected two collapsible batons it what it is. No doubt, they may also think of also making two batons you can twist together to make this bow. That way a person can use the weapons both ways as they please. Maybe add a connecting chin and also have nunchucks. Then 3 weapons in one. Or at least different variations of one. Who know, maybe even make a 3 sectional staff out of a similar concept. Or add knives in it to pop out instead.
Seeing as this is a concealed weapon you would have to be a moron to carry this thing in public in states that ban them. I wish he would have touched on that
Jake, I am so glad I found your youtube sight. I trained in the 70's for about half a year and truly loved the way my body enjoyed the workouts. I think we all know my motivation to do so. Problem is I let life got in the way but, I did not forget my short training. When I found this sight I was motivated to return to my training. Thank you! Now I have to say somthing I hope you don't take it wrong. I do respect and admire your way of living and life but,... the quote has caused the dead to call out from their grave with loud voices. Those victoms of violent death are asking you to finish the saying,....Kill rather than die. I will finish with my inspired saying,...."avoid when it's possible, defuse when you can, defend when you need too and survive when you must". C Bruce Strickland
It literally is, i think theyre schrade batons, two of them w the bottom cap screwed off and just joined together lol Still cool, looks like a risk to use if you dont know what youre doing tho
with you having used this collapsible bo staff. How strong would you say it it. When i seen you open it it looked flimsy and i know its made out of steel. How much can it really hold up too? how strong is it? what are its limits?
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace One quick question or concern. I always thought that the fastest way to demagnetize a magnet was to smack it with something. I just wonder if smacking this bow against the ground to collapse it would eventually demagnetize it causing the ends to no longer stay in. Just wondering out loud.
Since you mentioned being a fan of the spear, I thought I'd share this. www.renegadetacsteel.com/products/g4/g4-falcon.html Basically the same principle as the collapsing staff, but not done quite as well. Still pretty neat, I think.
if you think you can't kill with a bo staff or that it is harder to kill with a bo staff than with a sword, you are sadly mistaken. a rapier cant chop to save its life and will be stopped by any light metal armor. its thrust is powerful, but stopped by metal armor, only slightly poking and knocking the air out of your opponent. a bo staff will crush someone's head with or without a helmet. think big boy baseball bat. a warhammer with longer range. where a sword will just daze your opponent, a bo staff will break their bones and crush their skull.
+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace (Sam) Interesting, I personalty made a custom staff for my Character The Wonderer at a Comic Con convention In Liverpool. The Staff I made is small then I like to be, as I made it from a mop rod. Any hight or design recommendation for none lethal wooden staff?
As always, a brilliant display Jake :-) always enjoy and appreciate your videos. I am a big big big fan of the collapsible baton's that are actually illegal in most states for self-defense, very very cool to see something so interesting modern and yet appreciative of the old ways in the staff definitely going to get one :-) I'll make sure to make a response video of its usage once I do Xie Xie Ni!

superb bo staff...i liked it.... and jake mace ur explanation of why bo staff is such a good weapon was very nice... the main quality of a teacher is to be patient and his way of explanation...On youtube i like urs the most
+Meunster Chease it collapses, it's an interesting piece but not very practical, for example, the "baseball swing" sequence he demonstrates, when he does the second move, extending the second half of the staff, chances are that he'd either collapse the staff when he hits, or the hit would prevent the second baton extending fully into place. put it this way, if you had 2 guys of equal skill, one with a bo staff and the other with this version, the standard staff would likely win
Think of it as a two-handed ASP. You have to use it like a normal police baton, which you can't jab with. But it gives you more reach, more striking area to work with, and not to mention intimidation.
Yes, you are right in a fight between two people of equal skill in using regular bo staffs, the one with the irregular one would lose. BUT the collapsible one provides a whole new variety of uses while getting rid of some. I'm not saying that the collapsible one is better I'm just saying there are no masters in using it and you can't possibly know which one would win in a fight between masters of a standard staff, and a collapsible one.
It won't collapse unless you poke something really hard with 0 give, like concrete. It won't even collapse if you slam it on dry dirt, and you might as well forget trying to collapse it with your hands.
I'm just gonna state here that I've broken batons (like snapped the last piece clean off) on duty by trying to break a window and hitting the door frame...these aren't as strong as people think. This is cool don't get me wrong but agree with the impractical part.
I bought this collapsible bo staff a week ago and I couldn't put it down after it arrived. It's just that cool. The bo staff is my favorite martial arts weapon.
I don't know...I could see it being practical for training or the like, since it's portable and doesn't take up much space, but I wouldn't trust using it in a fight. After all, the more moving parts a weapon has, the more likely it becomes for something to go wrong.
Duemkush710 yes...I would pick my 120 cm stick any day over a gun! it's more than enough to defend yourself against a scum gang also in my country owning a gun is illegal in the fist place
+mikewithglasses102 These things are pretty sturdy and don't collapse that easily but I'm sure you can't collapse it on someone's chest. Highly recommended
Sleepy 12ft Panda true but a shorter staff is less optimal for thrusting anyways at least you know you won't damage the ends because they'll push back in and can just be resprung definitely more for pushing attacks out of the way and then countering with more sweeping motions I also wonder how much the tensile strength is affected if you move your hands farther from the handle
Very nice weapon. It doesn't look like you can thrust with it though...wouldn't it just close with head on contact with either end? Seems like this one may only be for striking sideways if it can't lock into the extended position.
+silverbullet4747 Y, it probably isn't for training for a spear, just pure smaking. But if you think about it it isn't hard to make one that actually has a lock by turning the halves of the handle in one direction and when you're done you twist it in the opposite direction. Just need to make that lock hard to turn so it does not unlock while you use it. :P
The product's site keeps emphasizing "training" - is that admission of its shortcoming for actual combat i.e. collapsing when that's not what one needs.
DreadnoughtAdventure I'm pretty sure the emphasis on training is for legal liability. If you label it as a weapon it'll be labeled as a weapon in court as well.
If you're still paying attention to this thread, it's most likely for training because if you were to use it to strike something with a fair amount of force it would break. You probably cant even use it for staff to staff training
Originalised Damn man, I feel for you. Get some sabre red pepper spray, and spray their eyes. I had some of that pepper spray, I accidentally got a drop in my pinky finger, washed my hands and 30 minutes later, I wiped my eye with my hand and mannn ohhhh man. It was Hell. It was only one drop that was even washed, not even directly sprayed
Basically a double sided baton. Never seen that before. And I've worked as a security officer for years, and graduated from college as a private investigator. Got to love modern tech. It kind of reminds me of Darth Maul. haha
That's pretty awesome.. any chance you did / will do a video where you hit a practice dummy with that staff? Rather curious how well it holds up on impact, and how easily it collapses / telescopes after it's been tweaked a bit by repeatedly hitting something.
I just found my old Jo staff while cleaning out my closet and it works great, Its made of polished hardwood and it still works just like the day i got it
i love this games so muck my first lego games was Indiana Jones i love it but now i like this one now it looks so cool thanks for showing the vidoes and keeping me busy
That's an awesome staff I've looking for an extendable one for a while. Its a shame they don't ship to the UK but I'll keep my eye now that I actually know they are a thing :D
Great for spins, and probably also for slashes, I have nothing to complain about. But what about thrusts ? I mean, if I hit with the tip, don't the segments retract ?
Something tells me this is best for practice without actually hitting anything. Such practice can be a lot of fun (nunchucks was my favorite back in the day, but i suspect that the sai may be the best melee weapon in an actual dangerous situation), but "flowing" movements/combinations will usually be interrupted the moment you hit something. Practicing on a boxing bag or something can teach very different combinations (maybe especially with nunchucks), that will be a lot more useful during a fight. Even if you can stop the strike in mid air, and kinda do the same movements as you would on a boxing bag, the momentum of the body will not be the same if you use your body to stop the strike, compared to if something else is stopping it and your bodys momentum is still having the momentum from the strike, and so you cant really get good practice without some kinda target... But again; practicing without a target is still a lot of fun, and it will make one accustomed to the "feel" of the weapon - and having such skills may even deter an enemy from attacking, so...
ahaaaaa I LOVE this guy's attitude and energy. I've been playing around with a metal pole as if it's a staff and I saw this and thought "WELP! Not gonna need that pole anymore!" ahah, that is, however, IF I'm lucky enough to be able to get one sometime. X3
Idk. My only concern with it is that you can’t use it to push a threat away because it might just collapse. Not sure if it’s a technique with a bo staff but thrusting is a technique I’m familiar with with a quarter staff at least.
Thanks so much for your videos. I started practicing the Bo-Staff about 4 months ago on my own, using online resources such as your video. I simply found a bamboo stick and decided to try the fundementals. I am looking now into buying an actual bo staff and I think I will get this and a Rattan. I have one question about the Bo-Staff. Is it realistic to use a bo staff as a sort of 'mobile post' (can't think of a better word), as in, say you shove one end of the bo staff (not the collapsible one) into the ground, and then use that point to launch your body like you're pole vaulting but to do a kick or dodge, etc.? I only ever had my randomly found bamboo stick and I'm sure it'd break under my weight (186lb), but, actual bo staffs maybe?
The metaphor for the bo staff, "Avoid rather than hurt, hurt rather than maim, maim rather than kill," has a reality counterpoint: "Hurt rather than be hurt, maim rather than be maimed, kill rather than be killed."
There's one problem with the collapsible bo staff I see that is both a minor pity gripe and a big deal. You sacrifice the ability to hold the staff from one far end and hold it like a spear and poke or press it against something to help keep it at a distance. That's a big design flaw with it. It's like having a sword where you cannot stab without it collapsing on you. For a staff or a pole arm they allow you to herd people around a little like the guy mentioned. I think having the ability to do a spear like action or in a spear position sometimes is a practical thing to do. Heck, I think it is not just something I surmise is useful for combat, but as a precautionary tactic against something. It could be for unspecified reasons I can't think of yet to justify someone wanting to keep something unwelcoming from getting to close but you don't actually want to harm it. You just want you and it to keep its distance until you or it is able to leave or decides too. This flaw isn't enough to make the invention a bad idea or practical. It's just compromise in its innovative design idea to make it work you are able to circumvent. (Example: You can still operate well if you have a sword that you can't stab. There are swords like that as well other blade weapons where you cannot really do stabbing or just doesn't have the idea put into account in its design. A good example are some axes. Another are certain sabers. Heck I have heard there existed... battle clevers for a brief period in the past. haha. I don't know if that is true, but you're not really that much in a disadvantage if you leave a certain action out of a weapon, if it is within reason, and has some other attributes that make it still viable to use. All you really have to do is just change your tactics and rules of conducting combat with it. In other words you circumvent the flaw and put more focus on the item's other strengths, like hacking, slicing, and cutting.)
I swear he will take off when he spins that thing
I can't even keep up with it either. Lol

No, I was thinking that and it looks like the Bo staff Clint used in Captain America: Civil War.
funny i was thinking it was the bo staff from Babylon 5

I was thinking more Darth Maul, but I see what you mean.

TreX Xen "SPECTO PROTONUM"

It'd be cool if they added some kind of locking mechanism to let it double as a baton.
Or if one side could shoot out!
Or even better, the handle could separate and it could become two separate batons

Oh really?! Ok thanks ^-^

Use a walking stick. Lot more reliable and does not run the risk of braking laws
I'll certainly consider it. Thanks Jake!
Problem. Because the Bo staff is collapsible, you can't thrust with it or else you'll shorten your weapon.
One would need to find some way to snap the ends in place so they don't collapse after being expelled from the middle.
Murasaki The Lucario Yeah, that would make sense, though a better way to stay armed on the street would be to carry a walking stick.

Originalised get a gun with no bullets
me: I can't even hold my foot in the air for ten seconds.
JAKE: im a fan spinner!
me: oh come on!
this baton will kill lol stick with the wood
I know that teaching.. I learned it first hand from my gero, and good friend. As well as his sifu. Cool to hear it from you.
I killed my ceiling fan im guilty
Let me be your student? 😂😂😂 dude you're bad ass
Holy crap man youve got skill to spin it that fast
Basically a double sided baton. Never seen that before. And I've worked as a security officer for years, and graduated from college as a private investigator. Got to love modern tech. It kind of reminds me of Darth Maul. haha
That's pretty awesome.. any chance you did / will do a video where you hit a practice dummy with that staff? Rather curious how well it holds up on impact, and how easily it collapses / telescopes after it's been tweaked a bit by repeatedly hitting something.
I just found my old Jo staff while cleaning out my closet and it works great, Its made of polished hardwood and it still works just like the day i got it
that was awesome I cant wait to practice with it. it reminds me of legend of korra's glider. keep being awesome jake
Man, that thing's just friggin' amazing!
Pretty cool. My wife has always wanted a collapsible staff after watching Babylon 5.
COOOLLL!!! NICE BOW STAFF MAN!!!
I love it (the collapsible bo staff)! I want one!
This is as close as we're gonna get for now at getting a portable dual-bladed lightsaber. Amazing.
Oo I really like this. Iv been trying to find a nice collapsed bo staff and this is perfect
i love this games so muck my first lego games was Indiana Jones i love it but now i like this one now it looks so cool thanks for showing the vidoes and keeping me busy
Martial arts hippy? No offense those are just the vibes I'm getting
That looks like a weapon a superhero vigilante would use
Robin !
That's an awesome staff I've looking for an extendable one for a while. Its a shame they don't ship to the UK but I'll keep my eye now that I actually know they are a thing :D
That black Bo staff is badass, I want
Do you have a video to develop a specific workout for this? Love your work
Brilliant vid. Thanks man!
Great for spins, and probably also for slashes, I have nothing to complain about. But what about thrusts ?
I mean, if I hit with the tip, don't the segments retract ?
you are a humble man, and a skilled man with the bo staff! :D
My dream come true
Ooo-Woww!! A "dual lightsaber" bo staff - cool! Practice breeds excellence, peace.
It looks like 2 ASP batons welded together. Cool idea
Just found out about this 2024. Definitely ordering
ahaaaaa I LOVE this guy's attitude and energy. I've been playing around with a metal pole as if it's a staff and I saw this and thought "WELP! Not gonna need that pole anymore!" ahah, that is, however, IF I'm lucky enough to be able to get one sometime. X3
metal pole, erm...
you mean broom-stick, right?
Idk. My only concern with it is that you can’t use it to push a threat away because it might just collapse. Not sure if it’s a technique with a bo staff but thrusting is a technique I’m familiar with with a quarter staff at least.
Do you prefer normal bo staff or collapsable, and is the collapsible much heavier?
I'm learning so much thank you! Thank you!
When you strike something in a stabbing motion does the staff collapse? Or does it lock in place?
i love my collapsible weapons as been doing mma 20+ years i started at around 6 so love a good bo staff and my most prized weapon the mind and body
Now that is badass.
How solid is it tho? Will it break easily?
The metaphor for the bo staff, "Avoid rather than hurt, hurt rather than maim, maim rather than kill," has a reality counterpoint: "Hurt rather than be hurt, maim rather than be maimed, kill rather than be killed."
Nice! I’m a Wushu practiser and this is pretty good, 很好!
Am I be correct that a thrust with either end of the staff would cause it to collapse or is there a locking mechanism? Otherwise, very slick.
If jabbing, would the bo collapse back into it's reverted form? Thanks Jake keep up the good stuff.
I wonder, is it sturdy enough to use in self defense? Some other collapsible staffs i saw would break with the slightest contact
