Black belt and nunchaku user here, i think your video is one of most practical combat nunchaku tutorial i ever seen I really love doing flashy move because its intimidating to your opponent but if someone want to learn nunchaku combat this video is my recomendation
Hi, yes, for flashy moves this video is great. However for practical fighting the show-hold is useless. People should start learning the basics first by properly holding the Nunchaku. This is NOT in the middle or close to the rope. In a fight you want to use maximum striking distance.
I have been a nunchuck practitioner for 43yrs I appreciate what you’re doing with your videos if this format had existed when I was younger I think I would’ve done the same Those who think in the age of guns that the martial arts are irrelevant have no real understanding of martial arts
this weapon has got to be one of the most intimate weapon for a martial artist to use, in the sense that it truly exhibits the meaning of ''being one with the weapon'' and ''the weapon is an extension of your body''
I find when I'm stressed, I do a few spins, transfer grips...I let my stress flow out of the striking end. I go slow but balanced and I know it sounds goofy, I feel the stress flow down and go flying off the striking end. I'm going to butcher this..... I want to learn the mon-raki ....the long weighted chain, the constant motion use of that weapon looked beautiful to me.
Just awesome. Love how you explain the efficieny of those beginners moves! And I love the traditionell ways of martial arts. I'm super motivated to get my own pair of nunchucks and start training!
great vid!!! been a champ for 40 years and loved this very informational video . and yes, all the flash is nothing ,but can make the attacker think twice before a confrontation. great vid
....I just went out and made 2 sets of lightweight nunchakus out of 13" lengths of 1" dia. PVC water pipe, with end caps, and short lengths of 3/8" braided nylon rope tied between the handles (separated by about 4-1/2"). Now, I'll wrap them with some tennis racket "grip wrap tape", for comfort, and improved grip. They'll be great for beginning practice. Eventually, I'll order, or make, some better ones, out of wood. These, (the ones I just made), have to metal parts, and are quiet, (no noisy rattling chain), and are "disposable" (cheap!)! I think that these afford a great (for co-ordination, and timing), training tool!!!! Thanks Jake!!!!! w/Much respect, and Love!
@@kidmosey Shad from Shadiversity demonstrated why a stick was a better choice. He couldn't think of a worse weapon to use. Basically, a person who is highly trained can do some damage with them. But the same person could do a lot better with just about any other weapon.
@@TerryProthero His argument was still flawed. It’d be like saying a polearm is a better weapon than a sword, or that a sword is better than a dagger without mentioning the context. A polearm is a better weapon on a battle field, the sword is a sidearm, a backup weapon, like the nunchucks. Nunchucks are traditionally easier to carry with you than a large staff. While the chucks aren’t as good as a staff, they’re a hell of a lot easier to conceal carry with you. Spears are better than swords, yet swords were more popular due to the convenience of carry, and daggers were still used despite swords being better.
@@mistahanansi2264 Actually, Shad was pretty specific on all of those points. He started by giving the context of self defense rather than martial arts tournaments, etc. He also addressed the issue of concealment. He showed that in the form of a walking stick, a stick wouldn't need to be concealed. It could be hidden in plain sight and carried with you anywhere. Nunchucks, on the other hand, are illegal in many places and would likely be taken from you by authorities. He also addressed how hard each could hit, the level of skill required to use each weapon, and the likelihood of the user injuring himself with each weapon under different circumstances. I don't think you were paying attention during his videos to try to make the argument you just made.
@@TerryProthero The hiding in plain sight argument is so painfully funny xD the notion that someone would believe that no one else would suspect a cane to be capable of being used as a weapon is pretty sad. The only way a walking stick would be “hidden in plain sight” is if you faked a limp every time you were in public, and had it with you every time you were in public xD People aren’t so dumb that they’d think “Yeah, no way that’ll be used against me” Also, as far as America is concerned, nunchucks are only illegal in like... 2 states currently. And while sword canes are less likely to be expected, and are a generally better weapon than wooden or metal nunchucks, even they don’t get passed metal detectors. Though I did understand the logic behind your counter argument, it’s only flaw was it’s lack of realistic context.
This video is 7 years old, but it is still inspiring some of us to get back into the Nunchakus, so thank you for putting this out there. I first used the foam in TKD classes in the early 90's and bought a 12 in pair red oak with cord and a cocobolo 14 in with 7 link chain to practice with. They sat in my workshop for roughly 25 years untouched. I am now in my early 60's (still fit) and I am back to practicing. Thank you.
Great video. I love the nunchucks because they’re so versatile. I usually use the ones with the ball bearing chain. For me personally. Love the video! 💜
Nunchaku is an amazing weapon especially when you´ve got two. The really good thing about weapon-training in Kung Fu is, that the techniques you learn with one weapon you can easily transfer to ALL other weapons. That´s brilliant because it reduces the learning time and you become good and cool sooner.
If you are really good at weapons, an event where you need them is extremely rare. Weapons teach other very useful things to where you grow beyond needing them.
Hi Jake, because I feel your honesty, practical use of nunchucks, emphasis on practice and discipline. Not trying to find a fight, but knowing how best to use what you've gained, to care for what you have! I've never offered this to anyone before. But I'd like to freely share with you a few designs and science based principles I've learned in over 45 yrs.
Thanks boss for the training session. Don’t mind the stupid comments about getting late for an appointment and still doing a video....those dumb asses wouldn’t understand the passion for this combat sport. Even if you were late for anything but you still took time for the session...that’s what true passion is...

Thank you Jake!! Love the way you demonstrate how to use this & different types of nunchucks. Very informative!! I will have my kids to follow your instructions as well.
I'm with you. But. I would also like to be able to look cool while using them once I've mastered just being able to defend myself with em. Just because.... I'll need more to do with em.
6:02 - beginner question: I know this is a exercise but, in a real fight, when delivering these blows, I would like to see how to deal with recoil from hitting the opponent.
What a great vid, now I know some more to practice on my own. In my mid 20's, I learned how to swirl them over my hands that it looked cool and I ha d fun with it. Now that I'm 58, I'm made my own to get back into it for getting into shape and more. I don't what to hurt or intimadate, but having the skills, just in case is worthy of learning more moves you've shown me! Thanks!
Jake, Thanks for your efforts in making these videos! I've made lots of tools, weaponry etc.. One of best where HARD hickory tapered at top, heavy at ends. Used with whip like action. Incredible crushing power when using the chain, cord or aircraft cable. Like a nut cracker, with just finger pressure, you can take control or end conflict immediately.
Doug Mooney well damn man, he watched a video on nunchucks and learned something, don’t go attacking him for it. (However I have no clue if this guy is good or not, I have never used these things before)
I wanna be both a juggler and traditional on nunchucks... I first have a foam version with chain and swivel, soon I will get a wood version, aluminum version or steel version with chain and swivel.
ultimaetsolder yeah. For real practice its best to use real ones since the weight balance is different but for training or to just get into the repetition foam ones are best
I never had formal training in weapons, but some friends helped me out and I learned on my own thru practice. I mean several times a day almost every single day. I would walk around the house wearing them on my neck. I did it partly out of boredom, often working with two, but my arm muscles became well toned and I lost weight, so despite negative remarks about this weapon, learning to use them provides real benefits.
My nonchucks have been my friends since I was about 12 years old. They are still by my side at age 58. I feel very confident that it would only take me 1 to 3 minutes, or less, tops, to take out an attacker, and send them to the hospital. I'm disabled now, but even so, with my chucks, I'm not so disabled as others might think. I like the chain & swivel type. I feel the rope type tends to have too much snap back on impact, disturbing the flow, and with more chance of getting myself injured, and doesn't do as much damage as the chain/swivel type does. With the chain type, I'm also able to use a thicker, heavier chuck... For me, the chain chucks, have better "stay in motion" type flow, with an ability to say hit someone across their jaw, then quickly do a U-turn and hit the other side of their jaw, continuing the flow, generally ending the fight in just seconds. I believe one needs to think of themselves as dancers, moving with flow and rhythm, to gracefully take out an attacker, with very little effort. They're inexpensive, like you said... and you get a lot of bang for your buck. I have several stout walking sticks as well, which double as a bow staff. Which is another inexpensive dangerous weapon. Great video. You cover quite a bit. Thanks.
Very nice video to begin a student's journey, but I am a traditionalist when it comes to the martial aspects of weapons training. In other words, I think the Gung Fu history, spiritual and practical components should be explained to the beginner when creating a class to actually teach nunchuku, just like the other disciplines. If this is not done, eventually the tradition and spiritual aspects will be lost and the user's will have gaps in knowledge. Your class-mechanics for muscle memory is awesome!
Well there are many flaws this is just a workout. Legchanges are ingredebly dumb to do in a fight like his rotation thing. Doubleswinging or loosehang swipe is better and has no rythm
Thanks Master Jake for another excellent and informative video! I have a question - While I realize that "flashy" techniques are more suited for movies or demos than street situations, do you feel that a series of flashy spins and tricks prior to a confrontation could act as a kind of deterrent - similar to the racking of a shotgun slide?
I’m so so sorry on my last post. I didn’t know you had this video. I truly praise you brother!! I’d like for us to have a spin off! Which I know you will. Hope to hear from you bud. You’re awesome man!
Dam can everyone just watch the video n learn? Full of ninja keyboard in here.. many real fighter don't usually have a fight recorded becuz fighting is illegal.. keep it up jake this video is very helpful .. everybody carry knives n gun theses days.. you don't know what to expect nowadays .. I have experienced many in my lifetime..
Going to be watching a lot of your videos. Just getting into it for exercise and for stress release/focus. Just bought my first pair, and my wife didn't completely roll her eyes at me. Score 1 for me.
Nice video I’m 64 and still like to practice with my home made set of Tufnol chucks, got to be really precise with them because they will definitely do damage if you hit yourself with them.
Admittedly nowadays, a nunchuk may be an underrated self-defense tool. But don't put it off just yet as in the proper hands it is still awesome & powerful. On a side note, pls apply caution when going through the motion as demonstrated on the last part of the video involving an overhead figure 8-like motion when faced-off with many foes, as it is not as powerful and could be swiped by keans of a towel or even a belt. Kudos to Jack. He explained the fundamentals of nunchuck fighting in easy to grasp details....
The black nunchucks at 20:20 are the kind I practice with. They’re soft enough as to not cause serious injury (unless you take a hit to the nose or teeth), yet they’re firm enough to hurt like a son-of-a-gun so you’ll still respect it when training.
How do the chucks react when they bounce off an opponent? I don't think that the flow in practice will follow the flow in battle. Also, how is your grip affected by blood, sweat, mucus, rain, etc?
if you swing hard enough, it will flow, but will do some major damage to the opponent. If you don't swing hard enough, it'll come back and hit your hand. As for grip, none of that has ever bothered me, but ive never had blood on my chucks before lol and I've only ever used wooden chucks so
When and if you for sure had to be applying some numchucks / nunchaku to a situation it would be all about instantaneous resolve . Nothing special is needed just down on or across the fingers knuckles or ankles / elbows and of course temple or jaw strike . Any two or even one of these would end a drastic situation against anyone reasonably fast . And also if you're a quick grapler you can restrain the limbs by controling from either the wrist or ankle .
21:06 my dad made me a pair of octagonal aluminum nunchucks, exactly like these corded ones, when I was in 7th grade, that would be in 1984. But they had a chain instead of a cord, and it wasn't on a swivel. They were props for my Halloween dance at school. I went as a ninja. But I could still use them for basic swings. They were heavy, solid aluminum-- not hollow. He also made me a cool samurai sword out of an aluminum flat bar and a wood handle. Good times.
Ive been experimenting with bouncing the nunchucks of my body, ive discovered its rather relaxing and therapeutic both mind and body, feels like a massage.
IMHO: WHEN YOU ARE TRAINING, IT SEEMS IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO LOOK OUT, TOWARD SOME PARTICULAR POINT OF IMPACT, THE "TARGET", AND THEN TO CONTROL THE WEAPON'S MOTION, SO THAT IT PRECISELY PASSES THRU, OR "ACROSS" THE "TARGET", BECAUSE THE WEAPON IS MOST EFFECTIVE IF AND ONLY IF IT CAN BE QUICKLY PUT ON TARGET, TO MAKE THE "STRIKE" EFFECTIVELY, BEFORE THE OPPORTUNITY IS LOST!!!..... [WHAT DO YOU SAY/THINK?!....] [BECAUSE, REALLY, THE POINT OF MOST OF OUR TRAINING IS NOT TO JUST BE ABLE TO TWIRL STICKS, JUST "TO LOOK COOL", AS IN THE "MOVIES"..... WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BECOME A "REAL, (HIGHLY EFFECTIVE), WEAPON", IN OUR SKILLED HANDS....(YES??!!!)...
I'm learning the nunchuks ,I've got the moves sust and moderate speed and an opponent wouldn't get near me ,however I would like much more speed, my chuks are wood and chain quite heavy. Loved your tutorial very clear for this amateur.😊🙏
I have my ccw and carry every day. Being aware of your surroundings is the biggest point in self-defense. I don't believe all situations call for deadly force and it is good to carry a non-lethal weapon. Just my opinion.
@@ifacecamp717 I could post my video and show him how its done but honestly why bother.. I stand by my original post with nothing more to explain or correct - " he's holding it wrong "
thats why you practice returns and catches. a strike is followed by a reload or hand change. These are best used with those who practice martial art with military intent or brown belts and up.
Great Demo,,,,As a practitioner ( Jujitsu) I use baton sticks. I started with Nunchucks as my 1st weapon as a kid and have been back at them for the past few months. I carry them everyday. With all the knife attacks happening these days this is a great weapon for defense. Second, if you get into a confrontation, no gun of course, lol, and pull them out you get attention that makes people think twice. Been there!!!

Do stupid flips and useless crap with nunchaku: LITERALLY EVERYONE
For beginners use padded ones since you will hit yourself in the face.
ultimaetsolder yeah.
Thanks.
Im more into freestyle but this helped me tremendously. Thank you!
Can you? Please.

I'm fat . . .. I'm killing it out there, and bouncing in here
Good. Keep it up
Excellent video!
Really probably my favorite video from Jake.
it was used to thrash rice
You know what, I've criticised this guys work in the past but this vid is excellent. Thank you. Sincerely.
Steve BB Agreed. He should drop the tai chi entirely, because his tai chi is frankly bad, but his weapon stuff is generally pretty solid.
My daughter learned many lessons from this wonderful video of nun chalk. Marvellous!
V Tran yes everyone carry knives and guns but I carry my nunchucks every where I go, even to work
Kevin Johnson I always keep some paper to fight off the evil knife and gun wielders
dumb asses in my state made it illeagal to have chucks ourdoors !
it's a good exercise to work your wrist muscles and your biceps and your core
Not really biceps.
Mark D i read that comment in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice for some reason lol
EXCELLENT LESSON THANKS MAN YOUR RIGHT ON!!!💯💯💯✌✌✌
Going to be watching a lot of your videos.
To fight with a Nunchacku you should teach how to hit objects and pull back safely. You have taught only swings.
Krishna Kumar isn’t that’s the basics?
I am so happy I'm ambidextrous. It will make things like this so much easier to learn on both hands
Practicing with nunchucks when I was a teen made me ambidextrous. It also made my off hand stronger.
Nooone is gonna approach the guy holding nunchucks in public.....
Wish he would
Admittedly nowadays, a nunchuk may be an underrated self-defense tool.
Just transitioning from balisong style to nunchaku style
5:23 you are a beginner.
Lol i've seen you comment this in 2 vids allready do something productive instead.
Golden Freeza it is true though. He is nice but his Kung fu isn't at an expert level.
You are right.
@@goldenfreeza682 lol. Some peeps don't have anything else to do. Just ignore.
Yes this very basic.
How do the chucks react when they bounce off an opponent? I don't think that the flow in practice will follow the flow in battle. Also, how is your grip affected by blood, sweat, mucus, rain, etc?
Exactly! Train for that! ;)
if you swing hard enough, it will flow, but will do some major damage to the opponent. If you don't swing hard enough, it'll come back and hit your hand. As for grip, none of that has ever bothered me, but ive never had blood on my chucks before lol and I've only ever used wooden chucks so
Tytton Elkins Theoretically, you cut your hand in battle, now blood is drenching your chucks. Would you be willing to donate blood for the experiment?
xD I totally will next time I get blood on my hands lol
Why are you yelling?
The dog wants to play with him
im gonna practice!
Ken Armstrong do it in the streets! Go look for those certain people that act bad ass then boom boom boom they'll be spitting teeth out
U don't even have nunchaku
I'm learning the nunchuks ,I've got the moves sust and moderate speed and an opponent wouldn't get near me ,however I would like much more speed, my chuks are wood and chain quite heavy. Loved your tutorial very clear for this amateur.😊🙏
I have my ccw and carry every day. Being aware of your surroundings is the biggest point in self-defense. I don't believe all situations call for deadly force and it is good to carry a non-lethal weapon. Just my opinion.
I bought my first pair of mahagney nunchucku in the Philippines?
6:05 you are still holding it wrong and fyi Bruce Lee was only "acting" he could have done drum rolls on you big time.
Chillll BRU
Hes completely clueless
@@americanlivesmatter-BmanWild watch the video. He's competent with the nunchucks
@@ifacecamp717 I could post my video and show him how its done but honestly why bother.. I stand by my original post with nothing more to explain or correct - " he's holding it wrong "
The disadvantage with the nunchucks is that you have to use time you dont have if miss hit to get the momentum again.
thats why you practice returns and catches. a strike is followed by a reload or hand change. These are best used with those who practice martial art with military intent or brown belts and up.
I prefer sticks, you have more control and get more power in the hits.
Weidor 777 :
If you lose your momentum and cannot recover . . .
Someone needs more practice .
😎
Weidor 777 easier to block
Very nice video I just subscribed very educational and informative thx 👊
Sorry but the dog sniffing the nunchucks and sneezing is funny!
Love your video's you are a good sensei.
12:09 how much do I trust myself?
NOT THAT MUCH SHEESH my nuts hurt just watching that
16:58 left side. A hyna walking in your back. It is very dangerous 😬
Thats a dog
For a second reading this comment I taught you were serious. Then found out you were kidding. lol that Dog is just watching him train
I challenge you to a fight Jake ;)
StuffWeUnderstand rip
Great Demo,,,,As a practitioner ( Jujitsu) I use baton sticks. I started with Nunchucks as my 1st weapon as a kid and have been back at them for the past few months. I carry them everyday. With all the knife attacks happening these days this is a great weapon for defense. Second, if you get into a confrontation, no gun of course, lol, and pull them out you get attention that makes people think twice. Been there!!!
Will be practising this tomorrow morning! Thank you
