Onewheel S-Series Firmware Update: New Gradient Tracking Feature

- Those who've ridden the S-Series know the experience is unbelievable. But in the pursuit for the ultimate ride, we've worked with the Factory Pro Team on an over-the-air Firmware update that takes the ride to the next level. Here's the rundown.
NEW IMPROVEMENTS:
Landing behavior - Improved landing behavior to assist in keeping the board level despite imbalances in initial landing. While the rider's body position remains the main factor in determining a balanced landing, we've made changes to help rider's avoid continued tail drag.
Control through Rough Terrain - Improved riding dynamics through long periods of chatter or choppy terrain to mitigate the effects of noise and increase stabilization and control.
NEW FEATURE
Gradient Tracking uses real time data to predict uphill and downhill riding scenarios and can compensate with more or less nose angel and responsiveness to optimize performance. This not only means additional nose clearance in uphill situations but also more tail clearance in downhill breaking scenarios.
This update is available now for GT S-Series by updating your boards Firmware. To update your Firmware, sync your board to the Onewheel app and follow the instructions.

Trying to bridge a gap between GT and GTS with firmware does not make it a better board it just makes it have better computer programs if it already is capable for the firmware then you guys are just profiting on trying to make the GTS so much better why not make something completely different how long you going to ride this train you can't improve on it that much more it's just a wheel and a board you guys are future motion you aren't one wheel make something cool not everybody's wanting a one-wheeled transportation device we just want future motion

Outstanding. I'd like to see more detailed breakdowns on what each setting means and how they affect performance, like this one. The previous videos didn't get to this level of granularity in a relatable way.
Also, thanks to the team for really getting into the details and challenges for riding, which allowed these areas to be identified and addressed.

@@turningmagnets the most confusion I see is around Roll and Yaw, what those mean and where to use them.
Also, a deep dive on the Advanced settings with Aggressiveness. One of the things I see regularly with people sharing their settings are "turn this up all the way", which is okay, but probably not optimal for how most riders Aggressiveness want to ride.
Now, I think I have a decent grasp on them, but would like confirmation, and think it would be good for the community at large.

This is really cool, but I really want digital tilt! aftermarket rails exist, and they need to be tilted.
We reaaaally need this. A huge portion of the community would be so happy if Onewheel would roll it out.

I agree! I bought my rails with the gts and didn't even realize the firmware blocked aftermarket tilting, shaping tilt is not the same!!
So you guys made a safety feature that mitigates wrecks on hills and your gatekeeping it to force people to purchase your flagship line.

They develop it for flagship platform, test in production, then when it’s dialed in they release it to the other boards. This is how a lot of companies and apps work. Cry more, loser.
It's a shame there's no mention of the guys that created atr... pretty scandalous releasing others ideas as your own. These features were made by pioneers in the vesc industry and they deserve the credit too.

Just updated my gts and took her on a 5mile quickie. I'm very impressed! Carving up hill feels crazy! At 6ft 215, I'm no longer secretly jealous of little riders 😂 keep up the hard work onewheel!

I’d say I’m so happy for this update but that would be a fat lie. I can’t be happy for an update that’s only available to GTS users and not GT when they share the SAME custom shaping 3.0. I already spent 2.2k+ on a GT that was supposed to have custom shaping that I didn’t get until over a year later. Now this update is specifically limited to just the GTS? As if people don’t race or shred trails on the GT? It’s a good update but y’all are shooting yourselves in the foot not letting this be available for GT.

honestly they are going in the right direction with those updates. But making gradient tracking locked to the gts because "its for high performance riders" is a pretty lame excuse. if they gave an actual reason like "the gt just cant support it'", "gt is missing some sensors" or something like that i would have 0 problems. but because gts riders are supposedly better? idk. correct me if i am wrong tho... i don't want the gts because i want the range of the gt, and i don't need the gts because i am very light and it would be way overpowered for nothing. i ride as hard as my gts friends and can easily keep up with them.

I’m no engineer but I’d imagine they could offer gradient tracking on the GT but are choosing to stick to the theme that the S is more of a race board, while the GT, while still a race board, is more for your all around average trail riding. It’s a business decision and maybe not the best one. I just got back from a ride on the updated S and it’s so good. I’ve got a GT that needs that trail drag and chatter control. 🤙
@@jackijackdarth1938I'm a light rider and the GTS was still a great investment. The headroom and torque the upgrades provide make the board much safer for casual riding, and more rewarding in more rowdy riding.
@@crimsonrain9952 does the lower range annoy you? I keep hearing it’s not that bad… only thing keeping me from really upgrading is tilt. I have steep and deeps and not being able to tilt is so annoying. Also, money… but I can fix that
@@jackijackdarth1938 The lower range doesn't really bother me much. I haven't had too much of a chance to take it out for a really long ride either, though. The difference isn't much. As for aftermarket rails, not being able to calibrate is annoying, but I find it easy to compensate for with the tilt option that is available. I also ride Steep and Deeps on my GT, which I did update the firmware of to access the new custom shaping! I'm planning to move the S&D rails to my GTS here soon.

Extremely disappointed you guys for not including gradient tracking even on the GT. Which let's not forget costs over 2 grand alone. The jump from the GT to the GTS is incredibly large for most people that such special treatment of GTS users should not be your only priority. And while I don't like pulling the DIY card, open source VESC users users have been enjoying this feature on all boards for quite some time now. It's unjust to cannibalize your own products and consumers so much so that the only way to have a fair riding experience is to either stop using your products or spend $3200 dollars into a closed ecosystem.

Your “whole new feature”, “gradient tracking” sounds like ATR on a vesc, which is not a new feature 🤣 😅 but stoked that the Vesc community can help you develop your product
Share the love! Bring these features to all of your boards. The whole lineup is awesome and deserves the same customization options. Some people like the smaller size and weight of the pint series boards, some people want the range of the GT. Everyone wants and deserves these digital customization features on their Onewheels!

This is great! Basically ATR which is a huge deal! I'm really hoping digital tilt is next. So many people ride aftermarket rails and it would be simple to add.

It's pretty cool, at speed it tapers so you can get massive low speed climbs and descents without effecting performance at speed. The idea is you shouldn't have to change your settings on the trail, you settings react to whatever terrain you're on.

@@Onewheel I mean you can adjust ATR behavior at speed on VESC too - including the angle change acceleration/velocity. Doesn't sound like a difference in functionality. What I will give you is that Onewheel does a great job in simplifying the parameter settings so they make sense to anyone. More user friendly for sure.

The VESC community has a mechanism very similar to gradient tracking working on XR, as a new gt owner I'd really like to know why this can't be done on a GT :(

@@Anonymous-xp7ze A VESCed Pint with stock battery can run ATR. The GT is a powerhouse with 18S2P battery. The limit is purely software. This seems like a commercial choice of Future Motion to lock out all other boards from this feature. Future motion, if you're reading this: why not bring it as a paid software upgrade to the GT? Ofcource, the GT-S will be king, but GT will be a better long range board with such feature. I really love my GT and want to stay away from VESC, so please keep the innovation going for your whole product line and not only the latest, greatest board.
Definitely quite annoying that this isn’t coming to the GT at least. It’s a feature I’ve been wanting to have and should be available broadly.

I’ve spent hundreds on my six year old pint and love it. However. Things like this, is why I won’t be buying or UPGRADING to/a GTS. I can’t wait for the brick update. Thank you.
Its about time. Its nice to see them slowly catching up to VESCs. What would really be cool would be a board with as much torque as a VESC at the same price.

@@Onewheelvesc has that feature as well, but it requires a lot of skill and effort to dial in, assuming this performs better than most 75v Vesc setups I’d say y’all really hit it out of the park with how easy it would be to find what works for the individual rider.
I still have a GT and i love it. But this being only for GTS makes me want to throw a vesc controller in my GT to get some of these features.
Stop looking the other way. After market rails exist. Make digital tilt available again

Dear Austen, Neil and FM. In the video it said that update will trickle down to GT. I would love that all update with GTS comes to GT. It will elevate the experience we ride. There are no reason to gatekeep the firmware that helps rider out to be safer and helps climb terrains. Apple is commited to support their products for many years and push all OS to many generations. Please Hear Us Out. Do not do this to those whom paid $2600 elite bundle GT.

so gt riders cant be high performance riders? there has to be another reason. this reason is lame and sounds like all other riders are bad compared to gts riders only because they dont have a gts. update is cool tho so yeah... @@Onewheel

Haha I’ll try that. Any chance you can add in an option to turn down the footpad sensitivity. I repeatedly get thrown from my board while maneuvering around under two mph. I didn’t experience this with my GT with original firmware.
Have you tried to turn up the jump zone re-engagement? I put mine up 1/2 way and also went to single zone. That got rid off all the sensitivity issues for me.
The footpads need more sensitivity, not less. Blame the wonderful piece of plastic they put between the grip tape and sensors

Again, the Pintx keeps getting ignored. Very disappointed in the lack of parts and software innovation. You had said to me that "Love" is coming for the Pintx months ago but nothing. Like I keep saying, start by making a handle in the bumper like the Pint has. So much is being done to satisfy the GT crowd. Again very disappointed.
We are working on firmware updates year round. This was our first one as a factory team. We want to make Pint X better, just as much as you!

Sounds cool.. but I want that on the GT as well. Once again making the GTS safer and not the GT.
The main reasoning is that GT doesn't have the climbing power to utilize this feature.

@thewheelneil1379 I can hardly get my GT to not tail tap after a gap jump. The board starts to point up everytime. It's hard to get any clean footage like that. Maybe it's just me and I need to practice more but the GTS is fixing it in an update.

@@Slirp07 not trying to take away from the innovation in the DIY community but we've been working on this for a couple months and we're proud of how dynamic it is. It factors in speed to have pronounced compensation at lower speeds and tapers off at higher speeds to make for a safer and more comfortable ride in those scenarios.

maybe a similar concept but practically a pretty different experience. Gradient Tracking is dynamic based on speed so you can leave it engage for entire rides. There when you need it, not there when you dont.
