  • I'd bet money most PT Cruiser owners have bad or failing manual transmission shifter cable bushings , located behind the battery. There are TWO cables with two different bushings. See my other video for in car video. This is a follow up.

Rather than filling the holes with silicone, use urethane auto glass windshield sealant. It is stronger & cures a lot harder.

+trat50 Have you done this yourself? I didn't want the bushing to be too rigid as it's meant to provide some cushioning originally.

Hey Justin, I've done it to motor mounts & tranny mounts on a Chrysler Sebring/Mitsubishi Eclipse my daughter used to abuse, a Plymouth Reliant I couldn't afford to fix and about every dirt track racecar I've ever owned. That urethane windshield sealant is basically polyurethane in a tube - great stuff! Give it time to cure.

The adjustable part goes on the left (driver's) side of the shifter, inside. It is the for the movement selected to go into 1-2 (forward?), 3-4 (centered), or 5-R (backward?). The part is adjustable. It allows the gears to go into function without getting meshed up with the wrong gears at the same time. It is pretty easy to adjust, since it self centers. Loosen the nut, allow the shifter to center in the middle and then tighten it back up!

Interesting. Stumbled across this. Did this exact thing yesterday except I used hot glue. It's extremely firm now. Question - my plastic piece was too big to fit into the cable hole due to the rim, I had to trim the bottom edge off to make it fit, did you have this problem?

I now add The silicone or hot glue after it's in its holder otherwise yes it's too stiff to flex to fit in there. Supposedly there is a part out there that solid aluminum you can get but I've never looked for it or bought it. I think the cable ends need a little bit of cushioning

My bushing has been gone for who knows how long and was only noticed during a battery replacement. Do you know where to find these bushings now?

search Doorman 14044 ebay, advance auto, auto zone, all should have it. There's a bushing at the gear shifter too for both auto and manual trannys
