How To Fix A Car Shift Linkage Cheap and Easy

  • If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, there's a good chance the collet has broken and fallen out. Most car companies don't sell the collet separately. They only sell the whole cable, which is expensive. In this video I show you how to fix a car shift linkage cheap and easy, building your own collet out of a shock absorber bushing and some washers. If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, watch this video and then go look at your car and see if you can fix your shift linkage the way I fixed mine. If it works, it costs less than $10 and will last a long, long time.

    Yesterday, I encountered a situation where a mechanic attempted to charge me an excessive amount for a repair that was not necessary. The issue was not with the shift cable, as the mechanic had claimed, but rather with the bushing. I was able to rectify the problem myself. Thanks to this video.

    My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.

    My bushing finally wore away and disappeared after 16 years.Took it to the auto shop where,for $70.00,they installed a new one from a GM repair kit.
    It lasted for 20 minutes until I got to work.Blew off somewhere on the interstate.
    Gonna take your approach and fix it myself.

      Because zip ties are easily broken by hand already. These gearlever cables are driven by the gear lever, which, as the name says, is a lever. It multiplies the force you put in it times 5 or so. So that will snap zipties easy. A solution like the guy in the video did is the way to go.

      +Neil Williams Maybe, if it has come completely disconnected down below, and the shifter moves freely but the car stays in park. If it’s stuck in park and you can’t get it out of park, and it is an automatic, then it is probably a problem with the switch on the brake pedal. A lot of cars have a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from taking it out of park unless you have your foot on the brake.

      With the key to on position and my foot to the brake pedal, it does not work.
      This car was in a flood. The water was above the brake pedal.
      Could the flood have messed up the brake switch?
      Thanks for your reply and help.

    Great vid hope it saves people money and such
    Side note... that rubber is probably not ready for a petroleum based grease... maybe something silicone next time.
    Not exactly OEM anyway right :)

    8 year old post but here goes. Couple days ago my gear stick was stuck due to some very cold conditions here in the UK at present. After idling for 5-10 mins it loosen but I was wondering if it may need greased or if there is any potential hack we could use to stop this from happening? When I say cold, its only between -2 and -5 which isn't all that cold tbh - but the problem is a bit of a pain.

    The part that holds the collet has disappeared on me. I went to modify a bushing, when I got back to the car it was no where in sight. Please tell me it is not spring loaded and retracted into the dash of the car.

    • @hoohoohoblin

      +Tanja Vandenberk That is really strange. It had to be there somewhere. Have someone move the shifter through the gears while you look under the hood and see if you can see or hear it.

      +Jay Finke this is a 2001 Ford focus with the split port single cam engine. If you have the Ztec engine, it uses a different transmission.

    So I guess out of curiosity would this work out for a 02 Camry? Gear shift gave out last night (no resistance at all when switching gears with the break engaged even), and now it's stuck in reverse.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 лет назад

      It's worth a try. Have someone move the shifter around, and look under the hood and under the car to see if you can find where it has become disconnected. It is probably a similar setup.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  5 лет назад +1

      That’s tricky. It could be internal breakage. You could go onto the car and have somebody move the shifter around to see if you can find where the cable connects and look for anything that might be loose.

    Question is this common? And is everybody having the same kind of problem? Not being able to reverse but can go forward no problem or vice versa?

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  24 дня назад

      Based on the number of views, this gets, it must be a pretty common problem. If you’re able to shift into other gears, it’s possible that something is broken inside the gearbox. But you should definitely look and make sure that the linkage is tight.

    How do you know if its the linkage or the transmission going out. My truck wont go in reverse? But sounds like to wants to.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 лет назад +3

      +Monica Labarre If you have someone move the linkage while you are under the truck, you should be able to see what's moving, and look for looseness in the linkage. If it can shift through all the other gears without problems, it may be a problem in the transmission.

    • @saucerguy3
      @saucerguy3 3 года назад

      The reverse gear in the transmission is separate from the rest, it's common to have them go out independently. It is on the easier side for repair from a shop to fix that specializes in them though and does not require tearing down and rebuilding the whole transmission.
