  • It has been almost 25 years since the passing of The Intimidator, but his presence is still felt to this day, thanks to people like Danny "Chocolate" Myers and Kirk Shelmerdine who keep telling legendary stories about the Dale Earnhardt we all once knew.
As members of the Flying Aces, they discussed the current standing of Richard Childress Racing and what to expect in the future from the team they once worked for.
The conversation sparks a moment where Chocolate surprises Dale Jr. with an iconic, one-of-a-kind gift that used to belong to his father. In an emotional moment, Chocolate and Kirk make sure to share their pride for all that Dale Earnhardt Jr. has accomplished and what he has done for the sport.

Kirk, I am so glad you said that Junior is bigger than his Dad because I have thought that for a while! Junior's wins aren't the same, but Junior's impact is so expansive and powerful! Dale Senior could not do all the things Junior has done, and I am grateful that Kirk said that!

Dale jr probably saved nascar without even knowing it while it was happening in the moment. Most of those dale sr fans would’ve bailed probably and didn’t care about Harvick and still don’t. The stands changed from black 3 gear to red 8 gear and then to green 88 gear

Im glad Chocolate mentioned the airport, my grandpaw Wayne was a pilot, we used to fly together a lot during those days. He was on the airport commission at Iredell. I can remember many times seeing the pit crews vehicles parked outside. I got to meet so many drivers when they would land after the race and pass through at the airport. Dale knew my papaw and one time dale gave him a hand full of pocket knives to give to my dad and uncle and me and my cousin. Also one time dale signed a #3 clock and that clock hung on the wall in papaws preaching study for years. Papaw was good friends with Ken Shrader’s pilot. I got to fly on Ken’s leer jet once. They wanted to take it up for a quick test flight. Made a couple laps around statesville. I was young at the time all I remember was the champagne glasses had Velcro on the bottom so they wouldn’t tip over during flight. After the flight i can remember sitting on the bench out back where the planes would do preflight checks. As Ken’s pilot was checking everything it blew my papaws hat off and it flew up on top of Iredell airports roof. And papaw was determined to get that hat back because it had his navy wings pinned to it. LOL but i just laughed at how wind blown his hair looked after Shrader’s jet spooled up and we were literally caught in the thrust of those engines. One time i was in the pilots lounge sitting in the recliner and they had a window mount AC unit just above that chair. You talk about the perfect place to take a nap right under that cool air. I fell asleep and i woke up and heard commotion and people talking coming down the hall. And they walked past the doorway and then Dale stuck his head back around the corner and he said “i see how it is your in here, laid up under the air conditioner are you asleep or are you just playing possum. I said i gotta check my eye lids for pin holes. He laughed and says where is your papaw i said its no telling but he’s around here somewhere probably talking somebodies ear off. He said well you tell him i said they need to fire you for sleeping on the job.LOL” So for me most of my memories for the good ole days of nascar was related to the airport and times i had with papaw. He took me to watch the races at Wilkesboro. Seems like every time papaw showed up he had bought me another die cast race car or he had got me a hat that was autographed by all the different drivers that came through the airport. Another time when i was young i had a nerf football and i saw another young guy across the parking lot and he told me to throw the ball. So we threw the foot ball back and forth and papaw told me to come on cause we had to get home. I got in the car and he said you know who that was dont ya i said no? He said that’s dale Jr. i said really, he said well it’s Dale or Kerry im not sure which one but he said that’s dale’s youngin cause he’s in conference meeting room and his boy walked outside and that’s who that is. He said now dales boys are gonna be racing they are already getting in to it and doing good so one of these days that boy will be on the big track. Im 40 almost now that’s been many years ago. But we all had a lot of fun at the airport. When dale died that was a devastating loss for everyone that knew him. NASCAR didn’t just lose the best driver they ever had, but a lot of people lost a good friend. Some people knew the real dale off the race track and he was one heck of a great guy. He would not cut you any slack he was the one person when you saw his face and that grin you knew he was fixing to give you a hard time and pester you lol. It’s good to see these guys on the podcast and get to hear all these stories.

When Chocolate said Richard Childress was a racer that became a business man, I was fortunate enough to see him at his beginning. In the mid seventies I worked for a company called Rental Uniform in Winston Salem. Richard became one of my customers. He had a little two bay garage rented in the back of a building on highway 109 in the community of Walburg. I watched him grow from there to another shop on the corner of Old Lexington Rd and Gumtree Rd. and finally to his shops in Welcome. It was the small town boy, rags to riches story played out right before our eyes. One of the things most people don't realize is his dedication for our veterans. He constantly opens his doors for events honoring them. He has not forgotten those who allow all of us the freedoms we experience today.

Dale thank you for having these great crew members of the number 3. Our family was very excited to watch them perform on pit road, and all the antics going along with their professional presence along with your Dad. We will never forget all of them. It was a very amazing and exciting time. For me racing has changed so much from those days. Thank you for the memories that we hold onto in this hour. We actually got on pit road at Watkins glen and watch the crew work on their pit stops. It was exciting. We still miss your dad but we are grateful for all the races we attended while he strived for the wins.

I've been a garage "rat" for a few customers at SCCA Events. It's not the same, but I can dream it is.
PS By "rat" I mean all those behind the scene and at the shop that makes these cars happen.
