I think that's the beauty of cynic versions of idyllic heroes. When we realize how bad it can get and we get used to that level of brutality, it makes one appreciate the idealism of what came before a bit more.

I would argue, altruism cannot exist without realism where stakes are understood by the hero. I think the best heroic stories involve acts of altruism. That’s just my opinion though.
