Dave Weber - Cruise Ship Singer? - Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel)

Never in a million years would I have predicted that I would someday sing on a cruise ship. But it actually happened! I got to sing with the top band on the Celebrity Constellation while we cruised around Italy and Croatia. It went well the first time, so I got invited back to sing two more times during the week.
Sometimes I'd be walking around the ship and some passengers would say something like, "Hey, we saw you singing the other night. Great job!"
That certainly felt good. But let me tell you the best part. These brilliant jazz musicians were from Ukraine (3) and Brazil (1). We come from very different parts of the world. But music connected us, and we became fast friends.
I got to sing in the final set of their contract. So they were about to go "home" for 6 weeks. Why I put home in quotes is because the three Ukrainians were headed not to Ukraine but to Bulgaria. They told me if they went home to Ukraine, they could be walking down the street and a bomb could explode right next to them. Despite that, they were so optimistic. They expressed confidence that Ukraine will someday be safe and that they will be able to return. They predicted it will take 5-15 years, but assured me it would happen someday.
I love music. But what I have been learning over the last few years is that music can be a catalyst or vehicle for something so much greater, human connection. All it takes is to be on the lookout for it.
