I have had s7 s9 and s20 and had found the the gorilla glass is not as tough as the iphone glass. I also have the iphone 12 pro max and have dropped it many time were it hit the front and back glass naked with no case and hardly a scratch. I still like samsung for performance and style and ergonomics but I have to give durability to the apple line of phone. Even tough samsung produces both devices displays.

    • @themepark_united
      @themepark_united 2 года назад +81

@David D. The glass used is the same as Apple, so that makes no sense. Apple also had issues with bending phones, never had that with a Samsung.

All of my old iPhones have never had screen protectors & they don't have a scratch on them. My 1st Android is my Note 10+ I love this phone but day 1 it got scratched up somehow!
I don't put my phone's in my pockets, I do have cases installed but I'm really amazed at how resistant Apple displays are to Samsung's. Especially with micro scratches.. Thinking of cancelling my S22 Ultra order & waiting on the iPhone 14 Pro Max..

Here's the problem, it's dropped on an uneven textured concrete ground and I love that. Because most drop test youtubers drop phones on smooth concrete, but being realistic, most streets and sidewalks have this type of concrete. So gotta put a case to protect those lenses guys

I'm so glad I got a case for my S22U that includes a shutter for the cameras now that I've seen this video. It seems to me like the discrete camera glasses can be damaged much more easily than a camera bump. My Note 9 has taken way more damage than this and the camera bump is still completely intact.

A *major* deciding factor for me buying phones for myself and everyone else in my family is how much does replacement glass cost, and how easy is it to replace. I learnt to ignore manufacture claims about drop resistance a long time ago! We all drop our phones. It happens. Eventually, they'll shatter.
Same goes for charging ports for my kids! They somehow seems to *eat* charging ports! So before i buy a new phone for them i google the price of screens/digitisers and charging ports, and how easy they are to replace!
Having said all of that, I'm surprised at how bad the S22 Ultra preformed! I've dropped my Note 10 a bunch of times and my frame is beat up! But the glass doesn't have a mark on it.

Glass is glass and that means it is very resistant to scratches but will easily shatter when it hits something hard that won't absorb the shock like concrete(that's why the X-Cover series has a plastic screen or Nintendo uses plastic instead of glass for their switch). I am not surprised the lenses cracked easily. I already ordered a case that will make the back even and protect the lenses that way. It is a bit crazy of Samsung to design it that way, I'd rather have had the design of the S21 Ultras Lenses instead but there are cases that will get rid of this flaw(and also hinder the free space between the lenses from catching dust like magnets).

I never used screen protector or case with that model. I used it for four years and changed it because it already felt too slow (and the frame was already totally stripped). After seeing your video I am ordering a new protective case. Sad how curves weaken the glass. BTW the shattered glass looks almost the same as my note 8 😅
    Thanks for the video.

Drop any glass on concrete and it's not going to hold up. Glass is still glass

Man just one drop and the camera lens goes that is not durable at all ! That's scary when you payed 1400 for a device. They really need to start investing more resources into a better durability solution unless of course they want these to break so you have to pay to keep getting these fixed $$

Ya, i think if the cameras had a flat single glass bezel, it would possibly have handled it better.

    Common phone droppage scenarios
    1. Sitting down, you briefly forget your phone on your lap. You get up, and boom!
    2. In your car. You forget your phone is on your lap. You exit your vehicle and boom!
    3. You're walking on street pavement. You failed to grasp your phone properly while quickly pulling it from your pocket, and Boom!
    4. Someone bumps into you while on your phone. It knocks out from your hand. Boom!
If you could simulate these conditions along with the droppage, I think would be more informative. Just a suggestion. Thanks for the review tho.

Thank you, and you're welcome. Yeah those are more realistic but people mainly just want to see these harsh straight drops to gauge how well they may do in real life scenarios based off the results. In reality these tests would need to be done in many ways and times to get an average and concrete idea.

I would get a good shock absorbing case to protect such a huge investment. Screen protector wise... maybe...

I always buy otterbox defenders for this reason. It does make buying screen protectors a bit troublesome because not all are made with otterbox in mind.

When Samsung uses this Gorilla Glass are you suggesting they don't expect you to use some kind of a protective case anyway? Just because it's tough glass does it mean it's realistic to be dropping around concrete without a case.

And this is why we all put cases on our nice expensive phones. I found this video to be absolutely cringe worthy. Not because it was a bad video with useless information but because I just saw dollar signs flying away with every drop and to see the phone dropped and damage like that hurt me to my soul. I cringed with every impact. Having said all that, well done and this is all very useful information. Over the last few years, I've shifted my case preferences to wallet type cases. I can carry some credit cards, my driver's license and other things as well as some cash (but who carries cash these days) and it folds over to provide front and back full coverage. The phone snaps in all nice and snug and it can also serve as a kickstand type feature so you can watch your favorite streaming service. I feel very confident in the wallet cases that I buy (and the screen protectors as well) that they will keep my device well protected and to date, I've had NO PHONES DAMAGED that were in the wallet case. I've literally thrown devices across rooms, dropped them from higher elevations than your hips, slammed them to the ground or against a wall... ZERO damage. I don't recommend doing those things but I was trying to prove a point to someone. I love my wallet cases and can't see me ever going back to anything else.. And the best part is the cases that I buy are under $15 and protect my phones better and are more user friendly for my purposes than any Otterbox or any of the more expensive cases I've used in the past.

I can't put much faith in this video tbh. If he was using a phone with no cracks for each drop test it would get better results. It was already broken after the 1st drop.

Not a scratch after a year taking off the protection film that came attached on the screen and the foil had gotten holes in it. The screen looked and felt brand new.

wish I would of seen this video earlier, nice drop test! The otter box commuter came in the mail today and my s22 plus should be here tomorrow. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts about the commuter, thinking I should of ordered the defender. I have the defender on my s8 plus and I work in a industrial environment and that phone has had many drops on concrete over the yrs and just bounces. The screen broke last week when a 5 pound steal gauge tipped over and hit the screen, not the cases fault.
