Anti lag systems have their purposes and desired functions on tracked cars, not daily drivers. Burble tunes are just a way to say that your bark is bigger than your bite. No burble tunes on my ride and I shoot flames naturally (often lately for fun) and sometimes crackle naturally. Function over form, always.
Couldn't have said it better - I'm getting blue/pink flames off all 4 exhaust pipes simply running cat less DP and a turboback exhaust + some bolt ons. Nothing forced, happens naturally - and it feels like your car is in the category to do such thing.
Anthony made me a burble and non-burble tune on 93. Started with burble then went to non-burble when I was diagnosing a boost cut (turned out to be spark plugs of course). Overall, car did feel smoother overall on non-burble, but I will say, when switching between any maps, make sure to run the map for a few rides. If you notice a difference in throttle feel when you load a new map, it’s because the drive by wire is recalibrating. I ended up keeping the burble long term because I hate the throttle recalibration period, and Anthony did a great job making the burble mild. If I follow shift points on intelligent, it doesn’t even bang. I have to rev up to at least 4k, allow it to decelerate in gear, with about 5% throttle to get the desired effect.
I got a burble on my wife's but knowing what it does, the fuel it wastes, definitely don't run as smooth, it is rarely going to be installed unless we are having fun making the kids laugh taking them to school. Thank goodness I'm a fabricator with equipment and can replace my cat or anything else. Another good video smeed informing those who do not know or unsure.
So what I had heard was that it got popular in rally racing, the theory was the explosions would keep turbos spooling and spinning much like a recirculating bypass valve does.

My 2020 WRX rarely pops, but I'm pretty much running it stock. It has a remark muffler delete and a K&N air filter. When it does pop tho it can be pretty loud. One time I down shifted at around 3k rpms and it popped 2 times really loud and I thought something broke lmao
I have a 2020 WRX as well with a Nameless muffler delete. Only pops a couple times when I rev match downshifts and that's how I like it. Burble tunes are for children.
Great points you pointed out there. How ever though, how subaru's gain the pop and bang tune on decel is actually by turning down the timing towards negative degrees, in couple cells some times, to open up your exhaust valve to stay open for longer duration. Now in theory, this is all ok within a range of timing but you gotta understand that you'll be putting a lot of pressure that isn't necessary on the valve train and the rest of the parts you pointed out. Now, I can't really argue that this isn't affecting the motor negatively, but I definitely believe extra stress on parts in most times relates to nothing really good. Don't get me wrong, I love the pops and bangs, I run it once every while if I get bored, but I definitely would not recommend it to be on every time!
Definitely ties back into how aggressive the tune is and how aggressive it's being used that will really determine if anything negative will really happen. They're definitely fun to use every now and then. For me the novelty just wore off quick with em 🙏
generally you just lower the lowest load tables between say 3500-5500 down to say even 10 degrees and that way you're not being too aggressive and its causing ZERO issues since there's no load and you're not adding fuel this way. being less aggressive makes it so you get a bit of character on shifts but not getting annoying popcorn for 10 seconds long as you slow down.. another way is now extending injector overrun to have excess fuel thrown in and potentially ignited in the exhaust to get a flame/pop. Really your main concerns are killing cats sooner. It's pretty hard to kill the car if its catless and wasn't all that aggressive since this isn't antilag. totally different things. Guys ask me to throw some pops in all the time on multiple platforms.
One of the best sounds is a natural crack or pop on upshift or downshift. But a tune specifically for them is a little much for me, but, everyone does their thing! And, hey, if your tuner offers to throw a nice little burble tune on for free (and, assuming it's a reputable shop), I say why not have the map for the days you want to have a small bit of fun!
its also honestly personal preference. I have 3 maps from stratified for my Focus ST, one is e30 with no pops, e30 with pops and a 93 no pops (for emergency no e85 pumps lol) and i run the pops when im in the mood or if i want flames cuz e30 is only way for flames in the STs (in my experience). But if youre properly set-up for pops (full straight pipe) its not gonna be too terrible for your engine unless youre bouncing off the rev limiter constantly and making it pop on every single decel.
When I first got my Harley 883cc I tuned it lean and it popped and banged hard on deceleration! I still have it damn near a decade later after riding it hard and putting it away wet all this time!
One thing I've noticed about the two crackle tunes (one is louder than the other) on my FoST is the deceleration is waaaay more pronounced. Sometimes it feels like I hit the brakes when I let off the gas! I do notice the laggier throttle too, car is just weird to drive. Stratified Automotive Controls crackles btw!
My MK4 VW GTI w/ a 24v VR6 w/ 2.5” Magnaflow catback exhaust occasionally gives some pops and deep rumbles when I pulled my foot off the throttle no tune necessary and is still the VERY best sounding 6 cylinder NA engine I’ve ever heard and it’s not even really close.

I usually make the pop work on ac, that way it can be turned off and on. And most people seem happy with only pops above 3k. That way when you're just cruising you can still have ac without detonating the freedom juice. Volkswagen, bmw, Audi, they all the same ecu. Bosch baby. Cake walk to find tools and info to tune, the way it should be.
I had a 'pops-and-bangs' tune for a while, back when it was a novelty and not everyone was doing it. It made me giggle and smile initially, but eventually it wore off and became annoying. I got rid of it, but by that time literally every BMW M car or E63 in Sydney had a burble tune, some were very obnoxious, and that's when I realised it was just dumb, and actually not cool at all.
I'm not really planning on running a burble tune but I was wondering what you thought of ambot tuning for the STI? People seem to have only good things to say about them from what I can tell. Do you have any experience or know of anyone with some and how it went? I want to get an e tune because it's so much cheaper than Dyno but the low price is kind of scary on its own ya know 😂.
my car loves the downshifts hitting at 4500 rpm. Tt sounds like a full auto AK-47 lol. No burble tune for me, although id like to have one to be annoying every now and then XD
I have a 2022 lexus is350 f sport, I do have a pop tune on it but u can barley hear it exhaust is stock and cats are there I’m debating getting a whole new exhaust

Thanks lol!
What about the pops that happen naturally by installing a new exhaust? for example the brz, you rev match and downshift and it pops. Does that affect the cat as well if its done a lot?
I get decent turbo spool and nice little natural burbles and nice back fires on my fiesta st with a stock dp and 3in mbrp cat back… Just perfect for my liking😊
Hay T, with cobbs catted dp would I get a cel with the new update or read codes? I may go for a retune next month. In confused at this point. And personally a burble tune would get expensive with these gas prices.
Interested in making a video on a blown turbo/ turbo rebuild (don't do what Timmy did stuff) ill send you 1 I so ✉ nice work bro always bring 🔥 information
Suprise you didn’t mention that it fouls your spark plugs out more too definitely a big thing with Subaru being not easy to change and you need good clean plugs for the car to run correctly
Sure it sounds cool, not at midnight, but a tune is kind of like a hoodie indoors: it's just a fashion statement but in the end affects functionality. One slaps you with a fine the other slaps you in the face with two strings.
As much as I want a burble tune, have a few pops here and there. Like other people said the novelty and enjoyment will wear off and just become annoying. I might just stay with the natural decel pops for the time being.
I was planning on getting a stage 2 tune for my GTI without burbles too, and I still might, since I currently have a burble tune loaded, but given what COBB’s doing, I might have to get a o2 spacer as well so I don’t get a CEL (unless there’s another work around)
hey tanner, was wondering how u take care of your sti. i know youve done plenty of videos, but i have a wrx and was wondering if u warm it up every single time u turn the car on? as in like say i go to a grocery store and was gone for 20 minutes, should i still wait for the rpms to drop? and also i know 3k rpms are the sweet spot but if i want to just cruise 65mph on the highway, can i sit it on 6th gear at 2k rpms or downshift to 5th gear so it stays at 5th gear?
I have a popcorn tune on my frs (Same one in my profile picture) and it’s very loud but recently out of nowhere my engine dies all in one day idk if it has anything to do with the tune because I have no other idea of what it could’ve been
I am currently debating on getting a burble tune. But I don’t want to abuse it and make my car pop everywhere. I still have my cats. I have an auto transmission too so I guess if I drive without using my paddle to shift or downshift I won’t have pops ?
I wonder what my volvo s80 t6 awd that is turbo'd and supercharged would sound like.. I already have winding of the supercharger and the blow off that'll make everyone's heads turn at 3,000rpm alone if I add this how mad people would be with every sound possible just going off constantly.
After watching this I think I'll pass on a crackle tune. My Veloster N already does crackle from the factory, and the downpipe I'm adding will free up more of them through the rev range. I guess I'll just have the EK1 guys make me a conservative-ish tune to make reliable power when I go FBO

Does Ambot Fit into the good tuners to go to? For the Burble Map? I just got my final tune with the burble map. Thanks man
Yessir, dudes a wizard with FAs 🔥
@@Smeedia Sweet, I asked him about his burble and if it’s bad to run all the time
Invidia r400+ resonated J pipe makes for some mean pops on regular protune, no special burple neccesary :-)
🔥🔥🔥
Do you have a link to those front spats? BTW love all your videos
They're the APR Canards 🔥
I had a 'pops-and-bangs' tune for a while, back when it was a novelty and not everyone was doing it. It made me giggle and smile initially, but eventually it wore off and became annoying. I got rid of it, but by that time literally every BMW M car or E63 in Sydney had a burble tune, some were very obnoxious, and that's when I realised it was just dumb, and actually not cool at all.
Bmws are so got damn loud out here with them. Can hear them a mile away
Actually all 2017 and up AMGs have stock pops and bangs when driving in sport plus.
I’ve personally had a tune from him. He’s good at what he does just slow to reply when you have questions.
I've personally never delt with him. However I've heard good things about his tunes. Dudes just always busy and is a little slow.
Tanner, love the vids, but @3:05, You know you wanted to say crappy tune instead of crackle tune! HAHA and I agree! But to each their own, right?
Lol it was an accident 😅
My sti started doin flamey boys after putting in my GFB respons and going catless. No new tune needed, so send it.
Send itttt
Hey Smeedia, what tint is that??? I like how’s it’s dark on outside but you can still see looking from the inside out ?
20% ceramic 🙏
my car loves the downshifts hitting at 4500 rpm. Tt sounds like a full auto AK-47 lol. No burble tune for me, although id like to have one to be annoying every now and then XD
😅😅😅
I have a 2022 lexus is350 f sport, I do have a pop tune on it but u can barley hear it exhaust is stock and cats are there I’m debating getting a whole new exhaust
i just recently gotta 335i and barely found out about the burbles lmao, I was popping alot with the paddle shifters last night and a bit today, it is only stage 1 tune so the burbles aren’t as aggressive but I needa take a break from it, don’t wanna cause any problems especially after watching this and knowing what it can do. Thanks lol!
What about the pops that happen naturally by installing a new exhaust? for example the brz, you rev match and downshift and it pops. Does that affect the cat as well if its done a lot?
No that's totally fine, sometimes a little extra fuel makes it through even on stock tunes. If it happens naturally you ain't going nothing to stress
@@benkerley1014 I do, I do it on purpose :(
My TSX pops a lot especially when cruising downhill
Thanks for this video man learned a lot !
🥳🥳🥳
it was originally on the first V12's to help keep them cool
Good to know, I figured it came from rally cross for cars with anti lag to keep the turbo spooling
Love the video, very informative like always! You rock!
Eyyyy, thank you Justin 🥳🥳🥳
I get decent turbo spool and nice little natural burbles and nice back fires on my fiesta st with a stock dp and 3in mbrp cat back…
Just perfect for my liking😊
Those Fiestas are fun little hatches 🔥
@@Smeedia yes they are! Too bad they max out power easily because of fueling😞
I got a burble tune from pd tuning, only going to use it for car meets
I kept it simple in my 18wrx and just muffler deleted it that's it..if I want pops I can lol, and still have my warranty lol
🔥🔥🔥
Hay T, with cobbs catted dp would I get a cel with the new update or read codes? I may go for a retune next month. In confused at this point. And personally a burble tune would get expensive with these gas prices.
It depends, what version do you have?
I belive Cobbs will throw a CEL for now. But from what I've heard a revised one will be coming out
I want to be able to read cel codes and may remove the tgv/egr deletes at some point, driving with a cel make my stomach turn for some reason.
My 2008 Honda Accord 4 cylinder does a pop and burbles and I bought it used does that mean someone tuned it before ?
Interested in making a video on a blown turbo/ turbo rebuild (don't do what Timmy did stuff) ill send you 1 I so ✉ nice work bro always bring 🔥 information
That would be a fun one to do 🔥
Suprise you didn’t mention that it fouls your spark plugs out more too definitely a big thing with Subaru being not easy to change and you need good clean plugs for the car to run correctly
Ohhhh that's another good one to add 🔥
Hey Tanner did you get my email about the heads ??
Just got back to it 🥳
Sure it sounds cool, not at midnight, but a tune is kind of like a hoodie indoors: it's just a fashion statement but in the end affects functionality. One slaps you with a fine the other slaps you in the face with two strings.
As much as I want a burble tune, have a few pops here and there. Like other people said the novelty and enjoyment will wear off and just become annoying. I might just stay with the natural decel pops for the time being.
Don't blame ya, I got tiered of mine after a day 😅
I don’t like the constant crackle it is annoying imo. But I do really like the loud pop between WOT shifts, that I don’t mind 😁
🥳🥳🥳
I was planning on getting a stage 2 tune for my GTI without burbles too, and I still might, since I currently have a burble tune loaded, but given what COBB’s doing, I might have to get a o2 spacer as well so I don’t get a CEL (unless there’s another work around)
I think O2 foulers are going to be the best bet 🤔
@@Smeedia I was thinking so too 😢 should’ve gotten it when I got my downpipe 😂
o2 spacer and a obd11 so when the cel does pop up you just delete it (:
The amount of times you said you’re not here to judge me for it, I feel like you’re going to judge me 🙁😂
hey tanner, was wondering how u take care of your sti. i know youve done plenty of videos, but i have a wrx and was wondering if u warm it up every single time u turn the car on? as in like say i go to a grocery store and was gone for 20 minutes, should i still wait for the rpms to drop? and also i know 3k rpms are the sweet spot but if i want to just cruise 65mph on the highway, can i sit it on 6th gear at 2k rpms or downshift to 5th gear so it stays at 5th gear?
Normally I'll let it at least warm up for 2-4 minutes, and you definitely can, I just wouldent go 100% WOT at that low of an RPM
@@Smeedia sounds good! thats what ive been doing as well, i just feel guilty when i still go without letting the rpms drop
Mine does it rarely on it's own. I got one just for fun. I turn it on for the tailgaters.
Just got my red Smeedia jet tag in the mail! It looks more bad ass than I thought it would! Can’t wait for my turbo frog shirt to come next! 🤘🏾🤘🏾
Eyyyy glad it made it safe 🥳
If your bmw came from the factory with it will it break itself over time? My cars 10 years old and it still burbles in sports mode.
I assume downshift pops are okay for the car? Aside from maybe some cat damage.
Correct. Totally normal 🥳
If i’m not aggressive with the burble tune on my wrx, will it still ruin the car
I have a popcorn tune on my frs (Same one in my profile picture) and it’s very loud but recently out of nowhere my engine dies all in one day idk if it has anything to do with the tune because I have no other idea of what it could’ve been
Did you ever figure out?
I have a bov on my stock sti pretty much burble tune lol
Those can do that 😅
I am currently debating on getting a burble tune. But I don’t want to abuse it and make my car pop everywhere. I still have my cats. I have an auto transmission too so I guess if I drive without using my paddle to shift or downshift I won’t have pops ?
When you get pop tune you usually set it to only happen when your rpm goes above a certain limit
Another excellent video!
🥳🥳🥳
If its just for fun here and there, go for it. Ive never had more fun breaking necks down town rolling with friends lmao
🔥🔥🔥
I wonder what my volvo s80 t6 awd that is turbo'd and supercharged would sound like.. I already have winding of the supercharger and the blow off that'll make everyone's heads turn at 3,000rpm alone if I add this how mad people would be with every sound possible just going off constantly.
I recently used the burble tune and I am kinda disappointed.... my pops without the tune are waaay louder and with the tune there really quite.🤦🏾♂️
My Veloster N comes with a burble tune from the factory ;)
Yessssir, they sound good!
After watching this I think I'll pass on a crackle tune. My Veloster N already does crackle from the factory, and the downpipe I'm adding will free up more of them through the rev range. I guess I'll just have the EK1 guys make me a conservative-ish tune to make reliable power when I go FBO
Do you suggest burble tune for a genesis g70 also can u still get a burble tune if you are straight piped
Turns out I’m not getting a Subaru I will have one some day but I’m getting a foxbody mustang my dream car
Ohhhhh I've wanted a fox body for a long time. 😍
@@Smeedia yeah it’s honestly a trade I’m willing to take ngl I will have one but the mustang was to hood of a deal
not gonna lie. this is one of my few pet peeves in the car communty. something about burble tunes just rub me the wrong way.
The suuuuper obnoxious ones get me
Angry pop's and crackles is awesome on a race car, on the streets just no
The real deal is 🤌
the video we have been waiting for
🙏🙏🙏
Is it safer to burble tune with high flow cats then oem ones?
Is it possible to get a really mild burble tune? Something that will crackle a bit every now and then?
Yes 👀
Eayyyy baby just in time for lunch 😁
Whats for lunch today 👀👀👀🔥
About to crackle tune my B8.5 S5 from jackal motorsports 💪 I mean I have cats but eh if they fry that’s an excuse to go test pipes or gut them :). If you’ve never heard them on a B8.5 they sound INSANE.
My Subaru ots cobb stage 1 tune pops here and there 😬😬
I wanna get off the ots tune but would like to add a few mods to it to make worth it any recommendations? (2016 sti)
SIDENOTE : this is my daily driver
Boost controller, downpipe, intake, cinjectors, fuel pump 🥳
I’m tuned but mine is like super fast banging like ak47 style.. how do I just get
A single Big Bang
Race cars have flame and pops to cool the exhaust on circuit racing not the streets lol
5:38 but dude, a jet engine? 😂😂😂 a little excessive huh lmao!! Not to scale lol
