Classic Game Room reviews WIPEOUT for Sony PlayStation from 1995. The first game in the popular Wipeout series of futuristic racing games demonstrates the power of the PlayStation and the futility of racing in the future. Great style and music but impossibly hard, try not to touch any of the walls or you stop!
Best tracks, best music, best atmosphere. My favorite in the series. Who remembers the two bonus stages? One of them was set on Mars.
Couldn't agree more, the first one is awesome and the best, you just have to get good to fully appreciate it.
If F-Zero and Wipeout were brothers, I'd say F-Zero is the straight-edge metalhead and Wipeout the Rave-going powder sniffer.
Mariokart is the funny quirky one
lol, too true.
Kevin Vu Mario Kart is your daughter that makes you turn off Aphex Twin in favor of the Bonnie Tyler song she heard on The Masked Singer.
WipEouts music is inspired by the british rave scene at the time
How to play Wipeout:
1. TURN THE VOLUME UP!!
Annoying thing in loving the racing Wipeout games:
Other guy: Hey, do you like Wipeout?
Me: Ooh, yeah! It's kickass!
Other guy: Yeah, I love when the competitors are kicked to the water!
Me: W-What? I thought we were talking about the one with anti gravity hovering car racing, kickass techno soundtrack, CONTENDER ELIMINATED!
Other guy: Dafuq is that?!
Ugh, same. ABC needs to get called out for stealing WipEout's name.
I've dealt with this, and it sucks!
what's worse is if you've sat through it the show is fucking awful
Happened to me last Christmas as well.......... sigh.
Lol I f**kn hate that other "Wipeout" game that has nothing to do with this one🤣
"The game is damned near impossible."
Yup. Not that it takes away from the overall experience, as you said, but Wip3out is a tough nut to crack for sure. I gave this game a try late in 1995 and got my butt kicked-- repeatedly.
At least I enjoyed getting housed, though; the aesthetics were incredible for the time and have continued to evolve over the years into jaw-dropping greatness (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Wip3out HD/Fury). Combat racing was also a big concept back then; aside from Rock 'n Roll Racing, R.C. Pro-Am, and Super Mario Kart, car combat had added a new wrinkle to the typical race mechanic that was really needed to jumpstart the genre.
Also: I LOVE seeing longbox cases!
For anyone who collects those big box PS1 games, don't keep the foam piece inside of the packaging, it has been proven that it can damage the disc.
segaofmyhouse good comment
this game was my childhood!! I would play for so long that the "X" button would leave and imprint on my thumb! Just watching this video brings back so many fun memories, I'd love to play it again.
It's a shame Studio Liverpool closed down.
The best Wipeout of all. The music is unmatched.
The epitome of cool. RIP Studio Liverpool/Psygnosis
Really fantastic music in this series. At the time, a lot of the electronic music presented in the original Wipeout was at the cutting edge of what was new and popular. CD quality audio was still pretty new on game consoles at the time, so it was quite a treat.
Maaan, this game brings back so many memories, and these memories are feeling lik emagic. When i was a kid this was on of my first PS 1 games, first game was ridge racer, and with the PS1 there cam a Demo cd with a demo of wipeout. Next game was wipeout ive bought. And the game is magical!!
I always liked the first Wipeout best. The music of that era ruled. The rave LP style artwork was still fresh and inventive.. a couple of years later it was old hat. The unforgiving crashes make the sense of satisfaction when you get things just right (those airbrakes!) really significant. Everything isn't set at night so you can see scenery and the tracks have distinct atmospheres to them.
Ah yes memories of 1996 flooding back, smokin' the weed & putting Wipeout 2097 in the PS1 & going whoooooooooooah man
I remember the music in this game being amazing :) ahhh those memories!
They should do a Wipeout Remake collection with Wipeout 1, Wipeout 2097, Wipeout 64, Wipeout 3, and Wipeout 3 Special Edition 🔥
Upon release Wipeout was a show stopper, it just blew anything of it's era out of the water, & let people know that Sony and it's new console where not just another entry into the next generation of over priced under achieving consoles much like the 3do or Jaguar, but something revolutionary, and unlike even the Sega Saturn a true jump ahead into a new realm of gaming expiriences. Wipeout also marked one of the more successful fusions between two forms of entertainment games & music, and in the process created a new artistically stylized approach that was a progressively fresh and welcomed new concept in the industry, and simply one of the initial PlayStation entries that put European game developers on the map, becoming one of gamings wonders during it's era. When I first gave Wipeout a run on my newly acquired PlayStation w/the PlayStation Picks demo disc upon it's launch I came to terms with this new machine in such a way that I came to the conclusion that everything that was technologically amazing no longer resided in arcades only, it had come home.
every single one of these classic game room episodes is gold yo. really chill and calm
When i first played the demo before it came out this was just mind blowing, sony was new, fresh, hardcore, the music, setting, the whole commercial output towards the gamers was massive.. This game was so awesome.. Played it with my friends many times cranking up the volume.. And wipeout 2097 was thé bomb! Still for me the classic one.
WipEout is my all time favorite series
Wipeout's highly stylized feel cemented into my head how really potent the original PlayStation is, from visuals to audio it made me a PlayStation owner from the get go, I would argue that the game is in fact highly playable with a really steep learning curve, which once you master you'll truly appreciate, Wipeout XL later addressed minor quirks that made it easier to get into, but without this one initial entry into the PlayStation's library I doubt the PlayStation would have been as successful as it was in the very beginning.
This was my favourite game of the series. Definitely a hard game, but that's what made it so satisfying to get good at it.
Wipeout was not that bad of a game to play and learn. It was the sole reason I bought the PlayStation 1 . It came out on my birthday and still remembered as one of my favorite gifts. It was a launch title and also was awesome linked together. We stayed up for days trying to beat each others times. I actually like it better than Ridge racer linked. I personally think that the difficulty on this game made it a better game than the other wipeouts . The music was incredible replaced with something like Ozzy it was awesome. I remember this game being the first game that made sound variate while going up in elevation. It wasn't that hard to learn how to run perfect laps. I am certain this game will go down as being one of my favorite all time games. Thanks for the review..
A much more happier/fun time in consoles infancy were the mid 90's, sometimes I wonder if we really in a better place via gaming than we were back then?! Downloading this as I've always wanted to play the original Wipeout game!!!
This was one of my FAVORITE games!
Underrated series and I'm so glad that devs are making another futuristic racing game like Wipeout
Loved this game.. A PS4 version would be amazing
***** Wasn't the studio closed?
diegofrgc
Yeah, Sony Liverpool (formerly Psygnosis) was closed in 2012. They were working on a new game for the PS4 when they were closed.
Wish granted
Wipeout 3 is still my favorite. Mega Mall and the P-mar Project are some of my favorite circuits in any racing game.
Dude this was THE launch title for the PlayStation. I got it on launch day, love it
I'm pretty sure the third game was called Wip3out.
***** In Europe, it was called Wip3out.
*****
Japan too!
So was it pronounced Wipeout or do you actually pronounce the 3 like wip three out? I sure hope it's the latter cause that's pretty cool.
Kramer7969
Pronounce it however you want, but the actual pronunciation is still just "Wipeout 3". It's just the position of the 3 is changed for the font, not the pronunciation.
***** edgy
I always prefared Destruction Derby over Wipeout back in the day when I had my PSX!
Wow ! The first time i actually saw a PlayStation was at a "Rave" lol .97'ish , Knoxville's indoor soccer park Dj Micro (breakbeat), Deiselboy (Dnb) Ll Bishop etc ... Very cool to be a kid that night !
I read somewhere it was not only inspired by Mario Kart, but the developers often played MK with alternate music and wanted to make a racer that reflected Techno music of the time. The sequels became better both in the gameplay and music department (though imo, no Wipeout soundtrack has been quite as good since Fusion). Wipeout 3 was awesome and probably my favourite of the series.
Wipeout is one of my favorites! I love XL! I wish XL had the dark mood that the first one had.
ah, the many holidays i spent listening to this soundtrack on cassette - yes - in my walkman - yes.
did i say 'yes'? i meant FUCK YEAH.
This is my favorite Wipeout and I still play it all the time. Plays great and I think the graphics are beautiful!
The game series that got me into the electronica music genre. Love this game and XL.
I could never fault this game, I loved it, once you had control and the air brakes sorted you could fly round the tracks, even the ice track. I never played any of the other wipeouts. 👊🏻♥️🇬🇧🙋🏻
I remember wipeout pure on the psp was huge when it came out but the series hasn't done well since..i think the change in devs really hurt it.
I thought the original dev team shutdown after pulse came out..or were they absorbed by sony. I remember hearing about it on a podcast.
sing nitpick Sony bought Pysnosis sometime in the late 90s and renamed them to Studio Liverpool. They were closed down a couple years ago, not long after the release of Wipeout 2048.
hakdragon Psygnosis*
hakdragon WOW Psygnosis..they made colony wars! I dint know it was the team that made wipeout. Thats a shame, Colony Wars was excellent.
Happy 20th birthday WipEout!
Oh man, Wipeout was so unforgiving! I found it ultimately frustrating because of the crazy track layouts and one-touch-and-stop walls. Despite that I did find moments of fun. Getting a podium place was an achievement. I particularly liked the work done by Designers Republic for the fonts, various futuristic design cues and overall style of the game.
I think that Wipeout 2097 was more forgiving in comparison but Wipeout 3 was by far the best and most accessible for newcomers and fans alike.
Great review, would love to see your take on Wipeout 2097 or Wipeout 3 Special Edition (the regular one can't be emulated on consoles for some reason).
Are you serious? All these years and you haven't review PS1 Wipeout until now?
Love those games, thanks for covering them. It would be so awesome of the series went back a bit and added some Gran Turismo level of customization. Almost seems like a missed opportunity to reinvigorate the series.
2097 or xl was way more difficult imo, there were also incidents with people getting epileptic and they tuned down the later wipeouts, although wip3out is very fast too, the digital download looks like crap compared to the ps1 version, theyve done no effort with it at all.
you definitely need feeling for wipeout. casuals are probably better served with f-zero, but the sense of speed you get doesnt even compare. wipeout is the best futuristic racing franchise without a doubt.
*****
in wipeout 97 i sometimes needed more than a whole lap to balance momentum because of inertia.
in f-zero you can instantly adjust. the controls are so different, they feel so different, for me its just obvious sry.
one of my favorite games on the ps1! designers republic kicked ass, and the music by cold storage is still amazing
Wipeout 1 is an awesome game. For its day and even by today's standards. I like the level of difficulty, it's not something games do these days have one level of difficult to and that is hard. So it's nice. Plus another feature you don't see today and I think mark should have emphasised it more, the music. I know he's more into rock but wow the songs on this game, I even have them on my iPhone they're that good. And they're not shop bought or commercial. Much like the old arcade games and the Halo series, songs made for the game. Wipeout 2097 the second in the release is much more forgiving when you crash and is the second game in the series but there is something about the first that will always stay with me nice review Mark.
I recently bought OST from this first WipEout and from WipEout 2097.. its fantastic.
Wipeout was the racing game equivalent of dark souls back in the day. It was hard but once you mastered it the satisfaction was real. :D
Wipeout, or F-Zero?
Yes, I went there.
***** and ugly. and boring.P
I like both but Wipeout beats F-Zero simply for the reasons ***** mentioned before.
I go with Extreme-G, but Fatal Inertia suck.
I prefer the atmosphere of the ps wipeout games more
You put it in the correct machine, don't think I've seen you do that before.
I remember playing this game when I was a child.
interestingly, wipeout and wiepout 2097 were both also on PC and the saturn.
Great review man!
i always loved these old wipeout games, but i never got good at any of them, same with the old extreme g racing games. i suspect i have a rom of wipeout and a ps1 emulator on my note 3 for a rainy day that seems to never come around.
Loved this series!
I just bought this on my Vita and had mixed memories of it. Trying it again showed it did get better in future versions and has an unforgiving "touch the sides and lose" feel.
Don't touch the sides then :D
I remember I had this on a demo disc.. You're right it was just too hard.. But it has it's charm. Great review as always.
it was all about this, destruction derby, and jet moto back then bro
I USED to dream about this game and i never got it for my pax ones i bought one.. .I LOVE the period when i bought older consoles pax and dreamcast! unforgettable
i remember me and my friend rented this for like 5 days and we were bad at it, but on like the 4th day i went to his house and he had it on the hardest camera angle and he wasn't hitting the walls at all.. i was like wtf man are you a robot!?
Looks like a fun game!
I think the original Playstation trilogy is the best of the series.
I remember enjoying XL so much, and just aw struck at the unthinkable, they had actually improved it, but not to devalue the original, XL just took this totally different approach, it was now meaner, leaner, & just menacing, with a style all it's own, and the soundtrack was the kick ass center piece, with actual established musicians, I was introduced to and I'm still a listener of to this day namely Photek, & Underworld.
@@chrispacheco8590 I was going to mention how this wasn't really a new approach, especially musically, as the original's soundtrack was very much the centrepiece and contained tracks from established acts too.. but then I went on Wikipedia. I assume you're in the US? On the European release, the soundtrack contained music by Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers and Orbital, and a promotional album was released containing even more similar acts who would go on to be featured in the follow-up. Looks like you missed out over there, but Wipeout very much set out the groundwork for the sequel, which is called Wipeout 2097 here :)
Vance, you're awesome!
The SEGA Saturn version using the official 3D controller played better. Even on the Saturn, it looked great. I still say the best in the series was Wipeout 2097 (Wipeout XL). Wipeout 64 was also another classic, more so due to the Nintendo 64 controller.
I actually never played any of the Wipeout games, maybe I should give them a try soon.
Hello, you have had problems with the soundtrack of this video and the copyright content? Please, because i want to make a video on this game on my PS3 :D. Thank you
It looked better in 'Hackers'!
(OK, it was running on SGI hardware in the movie).
Great video :)
If anything this game introduced me to electronic trance music.
I think I remember playing that game a long time ago.
O man this game was awesome when it was released, and I can remember playing it for hours trying to beat every track. :-)
This game really shows its age and fzero x plus later wipeout games blow it away but i still enjoy this game
Best game on ps1 i still have it in the long box and you can put this game in a cd player and listen to the whole in game soundtrack
This game was my childhood. But it's a hell of a lot easier with airbrakes.
I had this for the pc. I remember palying the sh** out of this game back in the day
Rest in peace Wipeout series.
You never truly made it to the platform you would have excelled most at, the PC.
And now you are dead.
Uh it did come out on pc it needed a 3d card
It came out on PC before and now there's Formula Fusion on Steam in Early Access.
steamcommunity.com/app/473770/
ehhh don't you never heard about Omega Collection
I still have my old Wipeout XL PSone disc and play it on PS3. Wipeout XL is the brst classic Wipeout game.
Wipeout 64 is a good game too.
Classic Game Room - WIPEOUT review for PlayStation
Review HoverAce. Man, what an underrated game..
I was a "Im waiting for the Ultra 64" (fuck the name Nintendo 64) kid back in the day but this was the first game that made me stop and question waiting...
this was the game that made me so jelous of the PS and angry at my N64.. until Fzero X came out :)
There was a Wipeout 64 ...
This game is so hard it makes me wonder if the devs and testers were even able to finish it
This game is very good. It is not the best in the series but I definitely think it has the best soundtrack in the series.
I played XGRA on the PS2, this reminds me of it :)
Hell yeah Wipeout!!!
My Favorite was WipeOut XL
sorry Mark, the only vehicle I would time travel in would be a Delorean ;)
Did you re upload this? I know I have seen this before.
I hear ppl always mention both Wipeout & F-ZERO, but does anyone here remember this little talked about game on the original Xbox called Quantum Redshift?...this one is really awesome and I heard that people who originally worked on the first Wipeout worked on it,does anyone know this to be true?...
I love the graphics in the Playstation wipeout games
Wipeout 2097 was my fave :-)
the ice track is sooooooo hard!
You can put this disc in the cd player to just listen to the soundtrack.
wipeout 64? say whaaat?! :O
I have wipeout 3 (or wip3out), but it's the Europe-only _Special Edition_ - and man, that game is sweet! It screams _2000_
I was kinda disappointed by Wipeout HD Fury, tbh :/
as the box art shows its called: 'wipEout'
The Saturn version is more playable because you don't come to a stop if you touch a wall.
Better on the saturn
the 3D games is not the best for the saturn
I have copy of this on the ps1 and the saturn, the latter is the best version!
Always liked wipeout games better than fzero, wipeout pulse on psp is really good.
