One of my personal all time favorites- I even popped it out of the playstation to listen to the soundtrack in my cd player courtesy of its redbook audio format.
This is the European/UK release. That may be the reason for the slightly sluggish speed, but someone will have to compare against the JP Wipeout XL to be sure. The PSX version, of course, is spectacular and completely untouchable.
Fun fact I've read somewhere : they decided to name the game Wipeout XL for the US release because they feared the americans would ask where the 2096 previous games are, lmfao. As for the name XL, someone came up with Wipeout Excess, typed Wipeout XS, but they feared people would take it as "extra short" so they went for "extra large" : XL.
I've played the Saturn and the ps1 version I know that the last one was better but both games were great titles for each system. Thumbs uo for Jose in New Mexico and also a big Thanks to Mark for all of his work.
I bought a Saturn when they were first released, and have the original Wipeout for the system, I love that game. I was unaware the sequel was released at the time as well. Is this Wipeout XL import for the US or was it a domestic release?
I have Wipeout for the Vita and OLEV it, but seriously it doesn't hold a candle to that gorgeous work of art on that most superior quality of canvasses, the Sega Saturn.
+MCHellshit It's the sitty framerate. Looks pretty good for the Saturn, could have been better if the framerate was decent. Gameplay-wise it looks like the developers were taking a dump while programming it.
You are playing the adapted PAL Version in 60hz. That’s the reason why the control and speed are sluggish. Check the timer, it really goes faster than it should be. You have to try the Wipeout XL instead.
This game works amazingly well with the saturn arcade racing wheel. It uses the paddles for the airbrakes and makes the game the best on the saturn in my opinion
The best version of this game was the arcade with the big moving cabinet. It was huge, and cost a lot to play but, the entire cabinet moved on hydraulics, there was room for two players (one to control the flight, and one to shoot) and it was extremely immersive because the cabinet was completely sealed so the only thing you see was the large screen ahead of you. Still probably the best arcade experience I've ever had.
Did the Saturn own less colours per sprite that the PS1? Because in comparison, the Saturn version seems darker/duller, less vibrant. I noticed this quite often with the Saturn, where scaled gfx looked blocky and rough in appearance.
I loved this game on the Playstation, it was so fast and smooth and cool. The music was awesome and the weapons were really exciting. Wipoout 2097 played like a version of Mario Kart for "grown ups", with austere futuristic styling and often insane speed.
Wipeout 2097, as far as I'm aware, was not released on the Saturn in the US. Only in Europe and Japan. Only the original version got a US release on the Saturn. If you want to play this version, the easiest thing to do is just track down XL on the PSX. Much more common and probably a lot cheaper than importing.
Very impressive review. Personally, I didn't like the checkpoint system in the early wipeout series. But every wipeout game has an epic music list which is one of the main reasons that the game so awesome. Amazing game series
*to Well, the Sega Saturn version of the first WipEout actually had a smoother framerate for two major reasons: One, the Sega Saturn wasn't designed to support particle effects, so they opted for sprites instead, and two, because the Sega Saturn used Quadrilaterals instead of Triangles, it allowed them to use fewer polygons per... well... everything.
@InecomCompany Could you also review Jak and Daxter the Precurser Legacy? One of the very first ps2 games that I got when the ps2 came out!!! Graphics are still amazing!!
Wipeout had an excellent version on the N64, even included all the music in stereo. I have both the PSX and the N64 version, and the Nintendo has some of the best play control in the series, a huge surprise.
Thank you +Alan Sewell+. I do have the game shark which allows Japanese Saturn gameplay. I would love to find this game at a good price. I know I prefer the original Wipeout on Saturn vs the PlayStation.
Sorry Mark, can't watch this one because they won't let me skip the ad by pressing f5. I am sure it was great and going to give you a thumbs up anyways.
+Colton Mask For Saturn, the OST is made entirely by Psygnosis in-house producer CoLD SToRAGE, and while it's certainly a good soundtrack, the PSX version is the best version, IMO, largely due to the soundtrack, which unlike the other versions is comprised almost entirely of licensed music from various electronic music artists, such as the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, and Underworld. Basically, get the PSX version.
@retread01 Both Wipeout ports on the Saturn feel a little off in terms of responsiveness and framerate. 2097 runs perfectly on a PS1, but neither game was really optimized for the Saturn. They are still decent ports, and are still fun to play.
@DragonRising88 Indeed, to each his own but I found Fusion to be clunky, and the character models looked really.. plastic. However Wipeout Pulse has since been ported to PS2 and I'm interested to see if it performs any better.
The Playstation version was the first time I ever saw advertising for Red Bull, as the billboards were all over the place on the race tracks. Of course back then, I didn't know what the hell Red Bull was as it hadn't made it's way to the US yet.
@lylatfox4 Early WipEout games were on other consoles because Sony had not completely acquired Psygnosis at that time. A few years into the PS1's life, SCEE got serious and fully bought out the studio and it was renamed Studio Liverpool. Now WipEout games can only appear on PlayStation platforms.
Wipeout 2097 is great, and the original game on the Playstation as an industry changer in that it targeted a whole new audience; demo pods put up in clubs and raves and the like. This version looks noticeably less smooth than the Playstation versions, probably due to the Saturn's complicated innards making the conversion harder.
@kinghomsar I got the hard copy version called wipeout hd fury which is an import and was slightly cheaper than buying it off of psn. Even though it is an import it is completely in english as far as I know and also contains not only wipeout hd but the fury add-on pack. Also I got the import hard copy version of siren blood curse called siren new translation which is also entirely in english and I think was cheaper than the psn version. both games are region free(no region lockout).
Personally I preffered the controls set up of the saturn (which has a better controller than all the PlayStations imho) but the PS1 version looks better and was much smoother. Need to track down a Saturn-PlayStation control converter so I can get the best of both worlds :D
This was one of the first games l got for my PlayStation and l played the crap out of it, the soundtrack by Tim Wright (aka CoLD SToRAGE) had some right banging tunes, so banging that l even ripped the soundtrack on tape and listen to it all day. you should review Wip3out, my favorite out of the series.
Whoever says the "Saturn is not capable to play WipeOut" you should watch Need for Speed on Saturn. Then know that the Saturn did not get enough programming and just got a lazy port...
@skyblue11685 Yeah I've got HD Fury as well, it only came out on blu-ray in Europe, glad I live here. What a shame they didn't release it everywhere else too.
Yeah & the transparent graphics looked better but apart from that & it being a tiny bit smoother I found them pretty much identical,& I remember when I 1st got the SATURN version I played my PS1 version straight before trying the SS version! Now the 1st Wipeout on the PS1 was FAR superior than the slugish SATURN port!I'll admit I always preffered my saturn to my PS but that's my honest opinion.
Wipeout XL on the Saturn ( ntsc-j) runs far smoother than this European version. For that matter wipeout XL ( ntsc) runs far better than wipeout 2097 from Europe regarding frame rates. It also plays differently regarding floatiness and the turning making it a much better experience
@Daemo4 Obviously you didn't play it on Phantom speeds. WipEout HD is the fastest racer. Play Zone Mode or watch some videos on RUclips. No one can make it past Zone 120.
F-Zero X, and the F-Zero games have better controls and more complicated circuits than Wipeout. In Wipeout, sometimes the weapons change the course of the race, and not just the skill of the player.
You are correct. The ntsc-j version runs much smoother
This on the PS1 is still my favourite of the Wipeout series! love the tracks and the tunes by Cold Storage
wow i subbed like two days ago, and he uploads so much, plus his voice makes me laugh. this is one of my favorite channels
Is this being with the D-Pad? If so, its a much better experience when played with the Nights 3D controller.
I have Wipeout for the Vita and OLEV it, but seriously it doesn't hold a candle to that gorgeous work of art on that most superior quality of canvasses, the Sega Saturn.
haha, this game is hideous on the Saturn
+MCHellshit It's the sitty framerate. Looks pretty good for the Saturn, could have been better if the framerate was decent. Gameplay-wise it looks like the developers were taking a dump while programming it.

You have to try the Wipeout XL instead.
This game works amazingly well with the saturn arcade racing wheel. It uses the paddles for the airbrakes and makes the game the best on the saturn in my opinion
You can't control the pitch control with the wheel on the Saturn version which stinks
A great sequel with some great tracks. It was best played with the Saturn 3D controller. It seemed to play slightly faster than the PS1 version.
Did the Saturn own less colours per sprite that the PS1? Because in comparison, the Saturn version seems darker/duller, less vibrant. I noticed this quite often with the Saturn, where scaled gfx looked blocky and rough in appearance.
I've enjoyed every wipeout game, but i think XL and wip3out are the best ones. Oh yeah and that Quake disruptor is awesome! :)
Does this version have multiplayer
I loved this game on the Playstation, it was so fast and smooth and cool. The music was awesome and the weapons were really exciting. Wipoout 2097 played like a version of Mario Kart for "grown ups", with austere futuristic styling and often insane speed.

If you want to play this version, the easiest thing to do is just track down XL on the PSX. Much more common and probably a lot cheaper than importing.
I love those games! I have Wipeout Pulse! I loved the factor of adding your own music!
Very impressive review. Personally, I didn't like the checkpoint system in the early wipeout series. But every wipeout game has an epic music list which is one of the main reasons that the game so awesome. Amazing game series
'bout damn time you reviewed a Wipeout game. Now can we have an Ace Combat review?
How about Extreme G for the Nintendo 64?
*to
Well, the Sega Saturn version of the first WipEout actually had a smoother framerate for two major reasons: One, the Sega Saturn wasn't designed to support particle effects, so they opted for sprites instead, and two, because the Sega Saturn used Quadrilaterals instead of Triangles, it allowed them to use fewer polygons per... well... everything.

I love how like every second billboard is for Perfect Entertainment.
Mark, Why do you have a red-eyed squirrel at the beginning at every episode?
This is really nice! But will my North America Saturn play it's?
Thank you +Alan Sewell+. I do have the game shark which allows Japanese Saturn gameplay. I would love to find this game at a good price. I know I prefer the original Wipeout on Saturn vs the PlayStation.
wipeout3 is probably my fav from the series.
whether that's from it being better or just some nostalgia I'll never know.
Jose from New Mexico had the excact same taste in games from the saturn era as me,every game he's loaned Mark I used to have & they were all awesome!
This game is what made me get a ps1. It really is a great game. The packaging is awesome too.
This looks excellent.. A big step up from the first Wipeout, it seems.
It would be amazing if you reviewed Wipeout HD+Fury. Thanks for all the videos!
Does this game have to do with HSX fro ps2?
So WipEout 2048 is the prequel to this?
DAMN this brings back some good memories!
Sorry Mark, can't watch this one because they won't let me skip the ad by pressing f5. I am sure it was great and going to give you a thumbs up anyways.
is the soundtrack for this game good?i appreciate great gameplay and visuals, but if the soundtrack sucks, then the experience is hindered.
+Colton Mask For Saturn, the OST is made entirely by Psygnosis in-house producer CoLD SToRAGE, and while it's certainly a good soundtrack, the PSX version is the best version, IMO, largely due to the soundtrack, which unlike the other versions is comprised almost entirely of licensed music from various electronic music artists, such as the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, and Underworld.

wow ! this jose is a big fan of classic game room . =) i hope he have many more saturn games . ^^ jose FTW!!!
@DragonRising88 Indeed, to each his own but I found Fusion to be clunky, and the character models looked really.. plastic. However Wipeout Pulse has since been ported to PS2 and I'm interested to see if it performs any better.
This game didn't have a lot of tracks to race on, but some nice tracks to listen to while racing :)
nice review. i want a saturn so bad! been cracking out on my dreamcast lately
The Playstation version was the first time I ever saw advertising for Red Bull, as the billboards were all over the place on the race tracks. Of course back then, I didn't know what the hell Red Bull was as it hadn't made it's way to the US yet.
it seems the saturn showed a black wreck if you fail but on my copy of w.o xl (pal ps1) the blown up craft disappears..wtf
i love all the wipeout series
The nostalgia man!
One of the few OSTs I own. That soundtrack is FIRE!! Sponsored by Astralwerks too!
Wipeout is a good series (except for Wipeout Fusion for the PS2) but I prefer the speed of F-Zero.
Can someone tell me what donated mean?, also i like to give a sega saturn game of Tomb raider to Mark. would that be possiable ?
Wipeout 2097 is great, and the original game on the Playstation as an industry changer in that it targeted a whole new audience; demo pods put up in clubs and raves and the like. Could you review Tourist Trophy, on the PS2, I just purchased! It is based off Gran Turismo 4s game engine!!!!
i dont know about saturns so does it have a thumbstick
Looks nice, I like the music.
Wipeout XL still works on modern PCs, and boy does it run fast on them in Direct 3D.
Does anybody have a good controller recommendation for this game?
Wipeout HD on PS3 is really awesome, and if you ever get bored of the music, you can just play your own while you race.
The XL soundtrack was incredible... This one doesn't sound too bad though.
@gyroCX Perhaps it was just the UK version that had the changed music.
@Bonzard1992 it`s available in the US store too
Personally I preffered the controls set up of the saturn (which has a better controller than all the PlayStations imho) but the PS1 version looks better and was much smoother. Need to track down a Saturn-PlayStation control converter so I can get the best of both worlds :D
I loved Wipeout XL back in the day
Psygnosis rocked back in the mid 90's.
Wipeout is so fucking awesome. One of the best racers EVER.
I just saw this guys shirts on his website, then I saw a Cafepress ad with the shirts in it
This was one of the first games l got for my PlayStation and l played the crap out of it, the soundtrack by Tim Wright (aka CoLD SToRAGE) had some right banging tunes, so banging that l even ripped the soundtrack on tape and listen to it all day.
you should review Wip3out, my favorite out of the series.
This game had to be played with the NEGCON controller on PSX. And ONLY with that controller. A great challening classic !
Didnt they have one for N64?
Whoever says the "Saturn is not capable to play WipeOut" you should watch Need for Speed on Saturn.
Then know that the Saturn did not get enough programming and just got a lazy port...
In the future, every competition is a game to the death!
@skyblue11685 Yeah I've got HD Fury as well, it only came out on blu-ray in Europe, glad I live here. What a shame they didn't release it everywhere else too.
I miss you SATURN!!
awesome game from a great series
hmm kind of miss this channel
Can't wait for mark to play fatal racing on DOS :)
Imagine if in 87 years they had that... That would be swwweeeet!!!
Didn't realise there was a Wipeout on the Saturn.
Wipeout 2097 is the UK version of Wipeout XL. That's why the game is slightly sluggish - you're playing the PAL version. Oops.
Wipeout XL on the Saturn ( ntsc-j) runs far smoother than this European version. For that matter wipeout XL ( ntsc) runs far better than wipeout 2097 from Europe regarding frame rates. It also plays differently regarding floatiness and the turning making it a much better experience
They made a sequel of sorts on the Ps2 which was really fun.
Wipeout was even released on the Amiga with PowerPC
@coldstoragevideo Agree entirely, and I'm not just saying that cos you're from Wrexham!
The sounds and style of this game remind me of syndicate.
And while were on the subject...
It's actually quite a well made port. I do like it, yet I'd prefer the PSone version, if I'd have to choose.
CLASSIC!
@Daemo4 Obviously you didn't play it on Phantom speeds. WipEout HD is the fastest racer. Play Zone Mode or watch some videos on RUclips. No one can make it past Zone 120.
the ps1 has support for proper transparency - that makes it's wipeout version look a lot better. I'm a saturn fanboy myself but lets stay honest here.
this may not be as good as the ps1 version, but its still fun to play
Try playing this with the 3D pad - awesome!
F-Zero X, and the F-Zero games have better controls and more complicated circuits than Wipeout. In Wipeout, sometimes the weapons change the course of the race, and not just the skill of the player.
I love this game...
My favorite wipeout will always be wipeout XL
you need to play more, use air brakes together to 'slow in fast out' on the corners instead of crashing
The PS1 version was a TINY bit smoother, apart from that they were identicle.I had both versions, there really wasn't a big diffrence!
the notion of WipEout really appeals to me but dammit I suck at them :D
Wow, you must be busy lately, you use to make like 2 videos a day
@slyfoxem i feel like wipeout hd was just as fast as f zero. Definitely alot harder
I've always that the voice saying "Rocket" was saying "Rocky".
