      For some reason the first game was also technically less impressive on Saturn.
      Howerver it felt faster and the music is still great. The game is somehow disappointing but in the end still fun to play for some reason.

    I found a Sega Saturn washed up at the beach, but it was just the empty case.
    But it had a writing saying "Tim Wright" on it, so maybe Cold Storage used that Saturn to play the prototype when he was composing the music.

    So glad to hear you give the Saturn the thumbs up! I watched a review recently and they guy absolutely slammed the Saturn version saying its frame rate made it unplayable, but as you said, although the frame rate is noticeably less on the Saturn, it is constant and doesn't interfere with gameplay. I played both back to back over the weekend, i played PS1 first for 30 minutes then swapped to Saturn, after adjusting to the slight delay, i was having just as much fun as playing the PS1 version.

    I waited til I had some free time to watch this, and it was so worth it. I agree, graphical limitations shouldn't get in the way of a great game being great. For example, once you look past the outdated graphics, it's easy to see that Legend of Dragoon is a masterpiece. This game seems like a masterpiece too. Especially the PS1 version is pretty much flawless. And it amazes me what the devs did to make sure the Saturn port had great music. I've watched a Wipeout retrospective roughly a year back, and it showcases the differences. The Saturn version does have a lower framerate, but the PS1 version in some tracks struggles to maintain its 25fps performance, making for a less consistent experience.
    As for 2097 in general? It's a solid game, but I do find some of its high praise unwarranted. My biggest issue with the game is the lighting. The game looks cool, but the tunnels are excessively dark to the point where it's difficult to see where you're going. It would usually take me 6 to 10 tries to get through those tunnels without much hassle, which I find to be poor level design. Artificial difficulty essentially. Also, and I don't know if this is my copy, but during gameplay there's a rare engine glitch that practically makes the game crash. You either have to try and restart via the pause menu, or worst-case scenario turn the system off and on. Considering how many times I had to retry difficult races, this occasional bug really frustrates. Overall, it's a good game, but I'd rather play either Wipeout 64, or Wipeout 3 (Special Edition).

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  4 года назад +2

      I can pretty much agree with the differences I spotted while I was playing although I don't remember encountering any slowdown on the PS1 xD Maybe it's there & I didn't notice xD
      Personally I love the game & I think I'm lucky as I've never had the game crash on me once & I've had my copy for 12 years now (It's the platinum version so perhaps the glitch was fixed in my version?)
      I didn't find the tunnels impossible to see in either version but maybe that's just me xD Either way, I still enjoy this game:)

      Speaking of Spyro 3, I've recently got a new PlayStation with the slot on the back. I can now get my hands on a Gold Finger, and my first game to import would be a Greatest Hits copy of Spyro 3 since it has all of the music that didn't make it into the Platinum version.
      Even without that extra music. Spyro 3 is still peak collectathon game design. Taking everything I enjoyed about the first 2 games, and addressing practically every issue that makes them hard to revisit. All of this regarding mechanical evolution, progression structure, and especially level design.

    Really great comparison between the two, the japanese version has a "slightly" better frame rate but still not great. Sadly, you missed the best advantage of the Saturn version - it has true analog control with the 3D pad. The PS1 version lacks this as the game came out before it was available on Sony's system.
    This alone makes the control vastly superior, omitting that from the review was a huge disservice to the Saturn game. That along with the superior in my opinion soundtrack makes the Saturn version the one to play in my eyes. It would've been nice if they could've gotten the frame rate higher though.

    the crazy thing is that I don't find anybody noticing that the saturn version had way different and better physics of the racecrafts. the physics were a lot more "free" than on the ps1 version. on the saturn you could fly high and get shortcuts that you couldn't reach on the ps1. The Sega saturn version was a true masterpiece for this reason. absolute unique of a kind masterpiece. I have the project of using the physics of this particular version with new tracks and graphics. I wonder if you can extract the code of the physics... it will be interesting.

      I mean ultimately for me despite everything the PS1 version is better but I did find the Sega Saturn version easier to play so I did appreciate this aspect ^^
      Overall either version is worth playing in my mind :)

      As for the first wipeout, the ps1's "stop you dead in your tracks" issue can easily be singled out in the source code. Once disabled it feels closer to the Saturn. I'm not sure why they removed it from the Saturn version, but it definitely looks more enjoyable when you're not being put to a dead stop on the original wipeout.

      @@archive3do769 Interesting. are you referring to the physics of collision with the walls?

    • @archive3do769
      @archive3do769 2 года назад +1

      @@dempart5558 the collision ties into the physics slightly. So it changes the feel almost entirely. It's just like 3 lines of math in wipeout 1 source code. Plus the math in the physics is all over the place for the PS1 and PC source code. They might have cleaned up the math slightly on Saturn, causing it to act a little different. Maybe they used the old PS1 math on the next ps1 wipeout games, and they used the Saturn code on the following wipeout game. I cant say for certain, because it's all speculation when guessing what devs did.

      @@archive3do769 this is fascinating stuff. I'm not at all in the world of software development, but the project I outlined in my first post is serious nonetheless, though I'll obviously have to delegate, even if it is costly.
      I'll have to dig in more about the case of the first Wipeout , but the difference in the 2097 between the saturn and the ps1 version is clear. But again I'll have to investigate if there is the same difference on the Wipeout 1 game. That being said if there is a difference it might be small, as the 2097 saturn version stood way above all others in term of ships dynamics.
      I'm saying all that from semi memory, it's a long term project that I've unearthed while watching this video, but there's a lot a preparation work to do. cheers.

    The Playstation versions were always superior because it has better 3D hardware it's just that simple !!!😊

      Not always :) Depends on the title & some games actually ran well on the Saturn (The Need For Speed comes to mind). I agree most of the Saturn ports were inferior, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth playing :)

      @TheAffroShowGameplay Wipepout 3 for PS1 was the game to put the final nail in the coffin for anyone thinking saturn had potential.coz that game went hi-rez played and looked better than past Wipeouts on PS1 it was much improved.i can't think of any saturn game that made me have a 2nd look.even castlevania sotn on saturn was an embarrassment....and saturn was supposed to be the 2D powerhouse system.

      @Final_Fantasy_7 Again it depends on the game :)
      Games like X-Men Vs Street Fighter was an embarrassment on PS1 & Duke Nukem 3D was better on Sega Saturn over PS1 :)
      As stated earlier I agree the PS1 had overall much better ports & a better library of games but don't write off the Saturn:) Had one for 5 years now & I very much love the hidden gems on it!

    I'm sorry for sega fans buy psx looks always better, just look the lights effects and framerate. I like more Dreamcast but again, that console needed more power to fight the ps2.
