    I think that was fair. Basically for the average Joe the Portta will do the job but for the enthusiast the OSSC really is the obvious choice. Great video again. Really useful side by sides.
    P.s. like the new intro

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  3 года назад

      That's a fair way to assess the two products since the OSSC is endlessly tunable while the Portta is plug & play by comparison :)

    I was expecting the OSSC to rule them all once again, but yeah, the Porta pulled a little bit of an upset here. Also, I've learned so much about classic gaming systems thanks to you 🎮💓

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  3 года назад +2

      To be honest the OSSC is far better but it was only the PS3 where it did stumble but again, for beginners or those who just want a quick solution the Portta gets the job done :)
      No worries glad you are enjoying learning ^^

  • @ThunderTHR

    The Portta is really well suited for those who are prioritizing budget and convenience over features and overall quality.
    Yes, if you have the extra money to spend, the OSSC (and RetroTink-5X) are the go-to choices to get a phenomenal experience, but if saving money and getting an image that "gets the job done" is important, you really can't go wrong with the Portta.
    Would be interesting in seeing how the Portta compares to other cheap Component to HDMI converters (with the resolution scaling) like the EASYCEL or Sunnatch converter.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  3 года назад +1

      Pretty much perfectly said :)

      @@TheAffroShowGameplay They've been on my mind since they appear to have different hardware compared to the Portta. I've had the Portta for a bit now and its done well. :)

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay

    Hey man, awesome video. I think for now i'll just get a nice set of component cables for my ps2 and hook it up directly to my HDTV (since it has component inputs), then maybe down the line i'll get either the Portta or the ossc.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  3 года назад +1

      Why not ^^ Definitely a good way to play PS2 games although I'm not sure if PS1 games will work this way as 240p/288p doesn't show up with component but I might be wrong:p
      Reguardless, hope you enjoy ^^

  • @WhiteJarrah
    @WhiteJarrah 2 года назад +1

    Ultimately, you need to treat the situation on a game by game basis. If you are playing a 240p or 288p game, you'll want to use the OSSC. If you want to play a 480i or 576i game, a cheap converter has it beat because the resolutions on those games are the same as what you'll get from a VCR or DVD recorder. And of course, the resolution switch issue is the bane to everybody's existence and makes cheap converters a necessity unless you want to pay extra for something like a RetroTINK 5X.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  2 года назад +1

      I'll definitely have to see how a cheap upscaler & the OSSC truly fare in interlaced games as many people have issue with those :)

    I'm mostly interested in getting a PS2 connected to my new TV with no component or composite inputs.
    For the money the Portta looks like a good bet. OSSC has issues with 480i apparently (90% of ps2 games)
    Excellent review, thanks.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  2 года назад

      I wouldn't say issues, just that it handles 480i differently & it does it well & it's compatible as long as you use the 2x mode :)
      RGB scart is also easy to use on it but yes the cost will jump so it is up to you :)

  • @Hadzz95

    I dont think its a fair comparison between a hardware deinterlacer (porta) and software deinterlacing. obs is pretty bad for that. A decent tv will blow it out of the water

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  9 месяцев назад

      I think it's very fair because although OBS isn't perfect, it shows people what they can achieve if they don't want to use the Bob deinterlacing of the OSSC for whatever reason, a TV can be used to deinterlace when in passthrough mode too with the OSSC so definitely fair :)
      Also people need to see what results can look like if they go this route :)

    For 720p are you switching between DVI, HDTV (rgb) and HDTV (yuv)?
    There's a weird thing that affects these modes on some tv's and leads them into thinking they're for either regular viewing mode or pc mode. Playing with the options on ossc can fool with both of them!

      To be honest I have never touched that part of the OSSC since I never play 720p on it aside from this video, this is why I wanted a second opinion before trying to start tinkering with it but, I'll see if this fixes the issue :)

    Awesome video man! like always! and excellent music!! i have that Etcetera tune from your other vid on repeat!!! here me out, i got an ODV as you know and looks great (s-video cable works no cuts for ps1 on ps2) but the Portta seems to be kind of king of the hill in some areas. like lets imagine the following situation. for example someone owns both a Wii(the gamecube backwards compat one) and a PS2 and only a PC monitor that only takes 720p or 1080p. then in thas case the portta is the best and only solution you have!! and is cheap too. sadly you can tell it looks definetly worse than odv and of course way worse that the ossc. like on the Claire Redfield scene behind bars. Porrta looks bad. i have read in a forum that the Portta uses a very similar chip to the better wii2hdmi adapter, the one that supports the lower resolutions too. someone in my city is selling this portta upscaler device for 10 euros second hand online. i think i will purchase it at that price to see if its is worth it for me to play 480p content due to the fact that the ODV which i love! does not handle that resolution. how to you feel about input lag on the portta upscaler? you have said in the past that it is too bad but i guess it wont be ODV good(somehow how it feels i now pursue image quality? but not long a go it was not that important for me, curious! i guess this is how people end up buying an OSSC or a framemeister).

      I mean for me personally, the Portta Component To HDMI has it's use & it will work decently with 480p and beyond although the ODV is better outside of the lack of progressive scan support :o

    Conclusion If you're going to play with consoles with resolutions lower than 240p or with ps1 ossc it's better, but if you're going to use it on ps2 or consoles of the same generation , portta is the best option

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay

      I actually disagree here, the OSSC is better than the Portta in everyday:)
      Better graphics, better deinterlacing & much better built along with more support to play more systems thanks to it having RGB SCART & VGA along with Component:)
      Also there's less image lag & the image itself is far better on OSSC:)
      The Portta might be a good start to get back into retro gaming but a much better option would be the Retrotink 2x, the Retroscaler 2x, a RAD2X cable or even emulation :)

    hi im back! ok so i got the portta and ive been testing it, one mayor question i have. i can see a faint vertical line pattern when send a 480p signal to the device. it is nothing crazy but is there. i have tried kill switch and urban reign and it is definetly there. on 480i they are not there it looks fine so they only appear when progressive mode is activated. i have done research and this phenomenon is known as the jailbars effect. is this normal on the portta? mind you i have tried the same component cables on a tv with component input and they look amazing on 480p and i have tried the same config on another monitor to rule out that it was the monitor but no. if i feed a 480p to the portta i get jailbars. i have tried the other two devices i have that output 480p thru component the xbox 360 and the wii. i do get jailbars but the pattern is much smaller or less noticable than on the ps2. can you comment about this?? is this an expected phenomenon of the upscale made by the portta? do i have a defective unit? or do i actually need better cables regarding of my current ones working fine on other sets?? now my personal opinion. if think if you have a monitor that only takes 720p or 1080p and you want to spend the least amount of money possible then the portta is maybe your best bet. i dont really like the way ps1 game look and this jailbar on 480p thing is annoying but 480i looks fine... another problem.. on one tv the image did not fit good and on a monitor a hdmi splitter was neccesary for monitor to detect the image of the portta... so year it is a solution but hard to recommend with odv and rad2x out there. pretty much same conclusion as you. hopefully technology improves on this front rapidly at least it looks like it will.

      Reguarding the jailbars effect I know 480p on the PS2 can introduce significant dithering so maybe that's what it was & the Portta's sharpening effect may have amplified it although I don't recall seeing jailbars on mine so I cannot be sure :o
      I know I use a more up to date 4K samsung TV so I don't know if other TV's or monitors behave differently:o
      I needed a HDMI splitter in my footage as the Elgato HD60s Plus won't see the Portta otherwise but it's not a big deal thankfully:)
      Unfortunately there's a reason the Portta is a cheap beginners device, once you experience the ODV/retrotink 2x line or in my case the OSSC, the Portta is quickly forgotten :o

      @@TheAffroShowGameplay ok i just tested everything again with my two flatmates next to me and i confirm that for the xbox360 and wii i was trying hard to look for flaws but they actually look like they supposed too 480p no vertical bars. but no doubt the ps2 has the vertical line pattern, i have tested several 480p games and they all seem to have it to some degree the lines are thiner or thicker depending on the game. i feel you about the 480p dithering + portta amplifying the patter. i have done some search on internet and i found a guy on the shmups forum and he makes all the observations you make plus the following: "with 480p from a PS2 I get a severe chroma delay (might look better with Cube or XBox)" i can confirm that for me it is the same case...looking for some pictures about chrome delay + ypbpr and the results kind of let me know that it is indeed the problem. another find i have about thet portta is that 3 models exists for the same upscaler. i own model: N3CVRHP, another blue/black one exists: PETRHS and Gold/Black one but i dont have the name for it. so yeah maybe you dont have the same problem. still after all of this. not recomended it was supposed to be good because of the 480p supports but fails at it lol. as you say ODV/retrotink 2x line or OSSC for the win!!

      @@trashcan9001 I will say the fact you went so far to confirm all this makes me think you should definitely make videos aha 🤣😁
      But yes I also noticed there was more than one version on the Portta so maybe mine has no jailbars but other image errors which I showed in this video & the previous one :o
      Yeah, those upscalers along with the RAD2X HDMI cables are so much better & considering the cost, the Portta is subpar at best :o
      I still think for 480p & beyond it's still reasonable if you get the right one but if you can, jump up to the other upscalers ^^

    Hello, do you have any recommendations for a cheap component to HDMI device for my PS2? I need it to display or convert in a way the 480i(of PS2's menu and some games) for my monitor that supports only progressive resolutions(minimum 480p).
    I tried to order a Portta scaler device after I watched your videos and hearing from many sources that its the best for price+quality, unfortunately, the order from Amazon cannot arrive in my city, forcing me to search other alternatives.
    From what I learned, to fix this I need a component to HDMI that has a line doubler function, at this point I just want to have the PS2 display everything on my monitor without relying on a chinese HDMI dongle that I currently have(cannot display interlaced resolutions like the 480i) and needs me to navigate blindly until I start a game with progressive scan.
    I don't care about the visual quality or any other gimmick(though, would be nice to avoid the bob deinterlacing, the upper shacking/tremble).
    Thank you!

      Your best bet is to use the RAD2X cables, Retrotink 2x line or the ODV, they are decent value, look good & will allow 480i passthrough or 2x via bob deinterlacing:)

      @@TheAffroShowGameplay ODV seems a great choice for me, price wise. Is it better than Retroscaler2x(someone else suggested this one)? Since their prices are similar.

      I would say it's on par with the Retrotink, it's sharp enough & looks good with S-Video or Component ^^
      My S-Video vs Composite video also using the ODV shows this off too :)

      Does it works with GSM on PS2? More like, can it output 720p or 1080p?
