Fun fact: NHL All-Star Hockey was featured in a scene in Mallrats. Originally, the actor wanted the game to be NHL 94 cuz it’s one of his favourite hockey games and it’s why a Sega Genesis Model 2 is seen in the background. But, the post-production team got in touch with Sega of America and gave them a contract to have gameplay of NHL All-Star Hockey on the Sega Saturn being shown months before it was released in return for a tour. And, the game was changed at the last-minute. The crazy thing is that he never got to be on the tour. So yeah, it’s amazing what a contract can do.

Also worth noting that in Kevin Smith's next film, Chasing Amy, they actually are playing NHL 94 in a few scenes.

I'm always happy when classic sports gamesget their due. I don't know why some folks feel like enjoying games and sports are mutually exclusive. Sports games were a cornerstone of my playtime during the '80s and '90s especially. The only reason I've gravitated away from modern sports games is that they tend to be very simulation-focused, and take more time investment than an RPG. I still love to pick up and play a game or brisk season on a classic sports game now and again, whether it's Baseball Stars, NHL '96, Super Baseball Simulator 1.000, NFL 2K... these games were important to so many of us, and there are plenty of people that would gladly dismiss them. Thanks for not shying away from what you actually enjoy!

Agreed wholeheartedly!!! While sports games are nowhere near the level of the Mario’s, Sonic’s, Zelda’s, Final Fantasy’s, Mortal Kombats, etc…I still enjoy playing the retro ones such as the ones you’ve mentioned, NBA Give N Go, NCAA Basketball (SNES), Maddens on Genesis/SNES to PS2/OG XBOX/GameCube, NBA 2K2, NHL 2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge, etc.

Actually i have (partially) reconsidered my opinion about Sega Touring Carc Championship conversion: the gameplay is the same as the arcade game (which is totally different from a normal racing game, hence the analog controller necessity). Also, regarding the graphics issue: truthfully the game runs at just 20 FPS with various slowdowns, but the distance draw is excellent with almost zero pop-in; also, we are talking about a conversion from latest model 2 board (the C revision, which moved 800.000 polygons for second, Rev. A just 300.000) to a SS 60,000 polygon port, which also contains various extra added from the arcade game, so the game is a solid port overall (again, played with an analog controller).

Man, it's still an ugly game. When it came out there was stuff like Gran Turismo, Need for Speed III, and Rage Racer either already out or mere months away. It looked and ran like something on vastly inferior hardware.

When I had a YT channel about 10 years ago I covered Manx TT saying pretty much the same thing; amazing port, but a huge shame it only had 2 tracks. One of the developers commented on it, and he explained how it was a miracle that the team got it to run, and working on additional courses was out of the question with budget and time constraints

It's kind of ironic how sprite based games were ripped at the time in magazines, yet 25 years later, they have now aged better than much of the fully polygonal content of the time. The sprites on those Baseball games look great still today.

Back in the day, my friend and I spent many hours playing a baseball demo that came with the UK Sega Saturn magazine. No idea if it was World Series Baseball or something else, I really should look it up and buy a copy.

As somebody who had Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, I didn't mind the gameplay. The remixed music from Richard Jacques as also interesting, as well as the inclusion of two songs from Eric Martin of the rock band Mr. Big: "Sons of Angels" (heard in the opening cinematic) and "The American Dream" (heard during the "Replay" for each race or Time Attack). My only complaint was that each car had its own flaw: whether it was acceleration, or steering. It could have helped a lot if it had a section to customize and improve the balance of each vehicle.

Some great titles there. World Series Baseball II is still one of my favourite sports titles, and I still play it occasionally. I’ve never owned ‘98 or played it. Need to change that.
And I know Pebble Beach Golf might not be a great game per se, but it’s still a very guilty pleasure.
Only other game I would have included in the video, is NBA T.E. Loading times aside, it is probably the best home version of it that I’ve played.

This for me personally was where my reticence to the Saturn came from...the complete lack of depth in sports titles. Genesis was the sports system and the SNES was my platform/RPG/adventure option. It was such a let down that PS1 went harder in this genre than Sega did.

I keep thinking of the logistics behind a 10 or 12 player game, and it makes me think that it was a rare occurrence. 1 guy has 12 controllers and 2 6-controller adapters? 12 people have Saturns in one friend group, and 2 of them each have an adapter? 11 people bought controllers just to play at a friend’s house occasionally? 12 people fit in one room with a large enough TV for everyone to see? If it ever happened, I’m sure it was great fun-or it caused a lot of arguments against the lower-skilled players.

I don't think retrogamers today realize just how much sports titles carried the Sega brand back in the early to mid 90's, since theyre usually dismissed as dated shovelware in favor of the usual suspects that you see in most Sega retro collections (which NEVER include any of the sports titles). Yes, Sonic was the flagship game, but that was aimed at kids and came free with a discounted (read: cheaper than the SNES) Genesis that was easy for inner city parents to get for their kids. Bear in mind that the "adult hardcore gamer who plays cartoony games" was not really a thing back then unless you were a social outlier, the vast majority was kids and teens who either rented or traded games with friends, saved up for whatever could have or held out for birthdays or holidays and really wanted the stuff that made them look cool, and what was considered cooler than Sports back then? I recently talked to a guy who worked at Funcoland back in the day, and he stressed to me that 75% of the sales that carried the Sega Genesis were sports games, not platformers (and said that the idea of any Sonic game--even Sonic Xtreme if it had come out and was packed in with the system--singlehandedly selling a $400 brick to families around Christmas would have been absurd even back then) And not one sports game carried the Genesis, it was the entire entourage of them. And I was surprised to learn from him that when the Saturn came around, not ONE person complained to him about the lack of a new Sonic game on the system, but many of his customers were PISSED that they couldn't get Madden '96 on Saturn. (Not helping is that Bernie Stoler's moronic management and complete disdain for the Saturn made it ridiculously difficult to actually get stock for Saturn product on shelves for the handful of people who even came in to buy Saturn games at Funcoland in the first place) It's easy to forget in hindsight that Nintendo pretty much had the kid platformer market covered back then and that the majority of the Sega crowd were teenage sports fans (again, Sonic 1 and 2 were mainly sold as free pack-ins at a loss for Sega. Sonic and the low price got the Genesis' foot in the door, but the sports titles guaranteed they'd stay in the long term). And even when the Dreamcast was designed as a return to form, when Sega gave the bird to EA when the Dreamcast came out in favor of their in-house sports titles, that was pretty much a kiss of death for them in sales. (It wasn't the only thing that sunk the platform, but it definitely didn't help their situation either)

I still remember looking at the back of the Madden games and it's saying from 1 to 12 players and my mind was blown

Thanks for doing this. I've been eyeing some of those Japanese sports titles for a while now, but non-arcade sports titles are a really underexplored area on the Saturn by RUclipsrs etc. I'd definitely be up for more.
As an aside, Hang On GP does also support the analog stick on the 3D pad, and I find it to be a good compromise between the twitchy dpad & the wheel. And I'm definitely in the camp that feels the Japanese Circuit Edition of Daytona is the definitive version of the game on Saturn. The tweaks they made to the gameplay there feel better to me than the original.

It's nice to see a video that appreciates classic sports titles. Modern sports sims are in a bad place right now, and I find the old games a lot more fun.

Video sections, please man, especially for a compilation. It would really help futureproof those kinds of videos, when in the future someone wants to see your opinion on one particular game.

Sega Touring Car is my favorite racing game on the Saturn. You need an analog pad, and you can't use the default tuning. And the graphics are the worst.
But man is it fun to play.

It takes some getting used to but it is absolutely playable with a standard pad.
The graphics on the other hand though... The less said the better 😅

good video. The Sega Sports games with AM&Rd division shown that Sega Saturn was better than PSX, despite Daytona (a less than 50% complete released game) the rest looks excellent until this days.

Worldwide Soccer 97 at the time of it's release was the best football/soccer game there was, period. The 98 version in Europe actually had clubs, it's even called Club Edition here. And as great as Winter Heat is, it's graphics are quite a bit worse than Athlete Kings/Decathlete, probably because the sets were much larger.
