Classic Game Room reviews KOLIBRI for Sega 32X from 1995. This hummingbird shooter meets puzzle game has beautiful visuals and demonstrates the power of the Sega 32X add on for the Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive! Explore, shoot enemies and solve puzzles as you save nature and bring balance back to the Sega 32X (I think). From the team that created Ecco the Dolphin, Kolibri is a 32X exclusive and an interesting videogame. CGR Kolibri video review has Kolibri gameplay recorded from Sega Genesis with 32X.
I've always enjoyed the 32X. My friends always laughed at my Model 1 Genesis with the Sega CD and 32X attachments, but they're just jealous and couldn't handle the awesomeness.
Or maybe they were smart enough to wait and get a PlayStation instead. :P
***** *get a Saturn instead
Fixed that for ya buddy.
***** Nah, the smart ones were like me. They got both!
XD

This was one of those games that really stood out in the 32X advertisements. Beautiful usage of colors, parallax, and of course a quirky concept.
Kolibri is, bar none, the best 32X game ever.
What about Space Harrier?
Ruko Michiharu
A perfect port is available on Saturn. Same for After Burner.
SpiralPegasus Yeah, but I believe that Space Harrier on the 32x is a better game than this...
Btw, it also got some pretty good versions on the GBA, Wii and 3DS
Shadow Squadron and Virtua Racing Deluxe are better.
Knuckles chaotixxxxxxx
I'm getting Ecco the Dolphin vibes from this game. Maybe a spiritual successor of sorts?
ahaha that's an adorable chen
same developer. that's why.
I though the same :D
Mr. Bones, Ecco the Dolphin, & Kolibri are all made by game devoloper, Ed Annunziata.
Should've been ported to Saturn with better audio and animation colours etc.
it’s totally crazy that it wasn’t
Not that anyone asked, but a hummingbird landed on my hand once! :D For the size, it's the lightest animal ever. When it flies, looks like a chopper. Perfect bird for this type of control.
I got this game and LOVE it! It is actually one of the reasons I tracked down a working 32X. Great review!
You've NEVER seen a hummingbird? That's crazy! I thought they were everywhere, like crows or something. I guess maybe they're only on some parts of the country. I see a hummingbird pretty much every time I go outside.
they're tasty fried.
*****
lol
Unquestionably the best hummingbird shooter on the 32X
and the only one maybe
no there are several more hummingburd shooters on the system
Gorgeous game with a gorgeous soundtrack.
When I first looked at the side scrolling stages it reminded me of Apidya on the Amiga. In that game you were a bee!
I was about to say this game has some Ecco The Dolphin vibes when you said it is made by the same guys. Looks gorgeous too. I might try this one out.
Absolutely beautiful.
This game looks beautiful!
Wow, Mark actually put a cartage in the right system!?
Best 32X game.
I remember reading about this game when it was in development by Novotrade (a Hungarian company best known for Ecco). I was stunned by the visuals, then I saw it in action, but the whole 32X thingwas just too expensive as I had a SNES and this would've ment to get a MegaDrive and a 32X... and then a year later Playstation stormed the Hungarian Christmas market and I got into that. I'd still love to own a copy of it...and a 32X...which is funnily costs the same in Hungarian forints today as it did in the mid 90's (not counting with inflation)
After getting my 32X and going to rent a game for it, I remember seeing this on the shelf and when I saw the screenshots on the back I immediately thought of Ecco the Dolphin. So I left it on the shelf and rented Knuckles Chaotix.
How about a Clockwork Knights review for the Saturn?
about time! :)
Woah Bethlehem, PA! My hometown :D
Stunning 32X title which, I suppose due to the system it was on, did not get the attention it was due. It had a soul of a shooter crossed with the atmosphere of Shadow of the Beastc with tribal music and hand drawn art style. Mark really understates the status of this title. An extremely good game on a very unpopular system.
the graphics actually look kinda nice, and it seems like a pretty cool game :)
Kolibri is one of those 32X games I was always curious about, but never played. I was a 32X early adopter and never regretted owning it. Most of my friends dug it; I never really got any flack about having it. If there is any regret, it's that Sega didn't support it. I understand why though. The truth of the matter is the 32X should never have released. It helped kill any chance the Saturn had at success. Not to mention Sega bumbling the Saturn's launch, but that's another story.
And then the last bumble with the dreamcast.
I wouldn't consider the Dreamcast a bumble as such. The Dreamcast was initially a successful platform. The problems came when the system was hacked, the Playstation 2 was announced; and let's be honest, the Saturn launch debacle that killed third party and retailer trust in Sega. The management above all is to be blamed no matter who was in charge at the time.
Well that's what i meant. And it's not like SEGA didn't know DVD was gonna be the next media.
That's true as well. The irony in that is that it was thought the GD-ROM would be hard to duplicate. Sega underestimated the determination of pirates.
About damn time we got a new 32x review
Waking up with a review of Kolibry on the 32X. Living the good life...
Thug Life?
Kolibri was one of the good ones for the 32X. This along with Virtua Racing Deluxe, Star Wars Arcade, Shadow Squadron, Virtua Fighter, Tempo, and Knuckles Chaotix. The 32X was technically interesting but it had no reason to exist retail. I don't regret it though. For me it was just a tide me over until the Sega Saturn would get released.
This man knows. Add Space Harrier and After Burner and you've got everything worth playing the 32X ever got.
Heck, I could just slim it down to Kolibri, Knuckles Chaotix, Tempo and Virtua Racing and I know I wouldn't miss anything else.
If you see it “in the wild” for anything less than $150, it’ll be a miracle
I didn't realize it was by the creators of ECCO when I got this back in 96/97. I definitely got an ECCO vibe from this while playing, so it all makes sense!
This is in my top 10 humming-bird based shooter games for the 32X.
Most epic pronunciation of Pennsylvania ever
You are a great guy I love the reviews great humor.
As I was watching this review a bird slammed into my window and died. I swear to God. Bizarre and sad coincidence.
Update: the bird didn't die. I went to scoop him up and suddenly he opened his eyes and got back on his feet. I let him be and when I checked later he was gone. Must have flown away :)
@@StewartLucrative I was watching an ecco the dolphin review when the same thing happened to me, but with a Dolphin!
You should do a Sega CD32X week, then you'll have a whole console/format reviewed. XD
This game's often crazy expensive on ebay. Definitely worth having an Everdrive for this one if you aren't fussed about having an original, and just want to play the game (and don't care for emulators).
Could just get a reproduction off of Etsy. That’s another method
Why is there no Kolibri HD?
when i was younger, when we played and died in this game, we called it "plucking out".
still have my 32X, still working, and still...
COSMIC CARNAGE!!!
I've always liked this game.
Can't wait for the Mr. Bones review.
Who is the genius that combined Ecco the Dolphin with a Shmup?
This looks really interesting.
the genius who made ecco lol
Man I can't wait till my Retron 5 comes in so I can play this!! Oh wait.....
Can't wait for the Mr. Bones review Mark. Please do show the Game Over part of Mr. Bones at the end of the review video your making for it because.....well......you'll see why eventually.
From the creators of Ecco the Dolphin, of course! I tried to play that game and I had no idea what to do. LOL
The background artwork looks good at least.
nicest game on the 32x!
Another great video!
I'd love a poster of that cover, especially if it was glow-in-the-dark velvet.
Same. Did you ever get one?
Lol, things I'd like to make a sandwich out of !That comment alone deserves a thumbs up. :^)
Never played it, but it has beautiful graphics.
"...Dig the harp, kids. Dig the harp..." jakajajk
A Kolibri is a humming bird!
As one of the 3 people with a 32x I think i'll enjoy playing this game if i was able to find it.... or any 32x game.... anywhere...
I have this game. It's fun.
I have Kolibri. Cool game
Great graphics.
Best game of the 32X
Where's the Mr. Bones review if there is one? I looked up "Mr Bones Sega Saturn" in a YT search and didn't find it, and then looked through the Saturn playlist and didn't find it.
Just to clarify, Mark is almost certainly kidding whenever he praises the infamously bad Cosmic Carnage.
This game "borrows" an insane amount of elements from BioHazard Battle. That green homing laser is pulled straight from Biohazard Battle, as is a lot of the enemies and sound effects. Crazy no one else notices this.
I do mate...7 years later.
Thumbs up if you have a man-crush on Mark.
First thing I said when I watched it is... It reminds me of Ecco the Dolphin. The controls, the look... And there you go, it's made by the same people. In that game too, you are lost in the beginning on what to do. This game looks a little more messy though, could have been better made. Cool game to own in your Collection though.
Reminds me vaguely of Biohazard Battle on the Genesis.
The only shooter I ever liked. Well I did like galaga too.
Yeah I was gonna say right away looks like echo the dolphin. Also, reminds me of that spore game for iOS...being abstract, having to search around a 2d level
A colibri shooter? very abstract indeed
This is to the 32x sort of what ECCO was to the Megadrive, if you look at it with that sort of open mind it's not too bad. Not quite the system seller an arcade perfect version of Afterburner II was but hey something else to buy for your system. Not quite as original but less frustrating to get into on first go :o)
You've never seen a hummingbird??? Woah haha I've seen way too many to count in my 18 years of life, but then again I live in California..
Wow! I only first heard about this game yesterday. I must have clairvoyance or something! Now someone go find a game called Agony for Amiga!
Still have a working 32X AND this game. I loved it, but I'll be damned if I understood just what the hell was going on. I put it in, personally, the same wheelhouse as the Ecco series.
i love this game 🥹💖
wow i was just about to say it seems sorta like echo the dolphin minus the space ship shooter elements xD and it was made by the people that made that game! what a guess
i have a huge soft spot for this game :'( my first 32x experience. i wish i still had it and the system. game might be in my sister's storage, but the system was destroyed by a cat incident..
Why I'm I thinking of Ecco the Dolphin when watching this game?
32x was pretty popular in south america
The Sega Nomad should of been a hybrid of the Genesis & 32x it would of made sense for the Nomad to play 32x games given you would of basically had portable versions of Saturn games. This one element would of kept Sega in the race against Nintendo & Sony for sure the way it should of been👍😎
No Mr. Bones video?
is Retron 5 able to run 32x games? Mark, showing good karate pinning places on the world map.
zanychelly No, it isn't.
Thanks man
Backgrounds reminds me of the Lion King.
"all three of you" lol
Man, those sound effects when you shoot your projectiles are so painful
Kind of interesting, isn't it? I mean, think of it from the bird's eye view (and by view I mean perspective); all you want is your nectar and to blow the heck out of anything that stands in your way. (Man this is a rare bird in my country, who ever heard of a bird blowing up things... Anyway...) You don't care about points, what the heck is that? It's not like you're in a competitive mindset and you don't know if you're going to come back to life or not hence the lack of a life meter. It's just you, the flowers, the... Um... Whatever it is that attacks you, your space shooter type powers and the scenery... Oh yes, the nice scenery...
where's your country, i'm indonesian and this bird is total common pet on my country. they even got the title right. "kolibri" is a hummingbird in indonesia.
I have this one. Haven't played it much. Got stuck in one area and couldn't figure out what the hell I was supposed to do.
Does anyone know the name of a side scrolling shooter back in the early to mid 90s where you played a person who rode a long eastern style dragon that would power up and change depending on the power up you picked for it. If you turned the control stick a full 360 the dragon would wrap in a circle for a short period protecting the rider. The rider could also get off to fight things himself on land.
I loved that game so much. But only ever play it during a two week holiday to Spain in the early to mid 90s. As far as I know it was only ever an arcade title, in it's arcade cabinet.
If any one can tell me the name of this game I would be very grateful.
FairysHuff Not the game you want, but you may be interested in Saint Dragon. It's a shoot-em-up, it's about a dragon, and it's awesome.
*****
It wasn't that game. Thanks though.
DRAGON BREED! THAT WAS IT! Oh thankyou DuckDuckGo. Thankyou.
unpatiently waiting for retron 5 review, should i buy one?????????????????????????????????????????????????
The 32X is rare? I have a Sega with 32X and CD. I think the Sega is dead though, but the other two should still work if I replace the Sega. Maybe I should sell it, ha.
I have both Kolibri and a functional 32X. Not 100% functional since it's a bit wonky with Primal Rage and NBA Jam. They play... eventually.
This guy have to make videos every single hour my gosh doesn't this guy have a life of his own
I am not sure but I think this game made it to the PS1.
If you want to sell Kolibri I would like to buy it from you.
I just thought I asked.
mine didn't fucking work- it froze after intro level. vitua fight and starwars only worked before it finally killed the whole system.
this guy looks like kevin von erich
Wow this is one weird game. Why a humming bird? Should have been a space ship.
Lol im in bethlehem pennsylvania
lol iam in bethlehem(belém)Brazil
this game looks like you could go through it without shooting
That game is worth about 250 bucks now LOL
Ubisoft's Child Of Light ripped off kolibri smh
Just a tad bit sarcastic, so...... Do you really like Kolibri or even Cosmic Carnage which you must bring up in EVERY REVIEW? Yes I know exaggerating is a million times worse than understating!
I win!
Tower of power or nothing
