Got a source? I kinda figured if Travis wasn't announced around the release of Travis Strikes Back that it wouldn't happen anyway, but I could use the read. (At least sans isn't debunked though lol.)
There’s a couple of other interesting things about NMH2, that originally it was to retain the open world mechanics like in the first. Evidence to this are the game’s three levels that required Travis to find warp portals “Akashic Point”. The graveyard to Matt Helms, the prison to Cloe Walsh, and the apartments to Alice Twilight. Additionally a PDF file of the game’s script that surfaced after the game’s release mentions the player having to find the Akashic Point themselves.
I noticed this too in my research for the video. Here's another interesting bit. Check out this excerpt of a October 2008 interview with Eurogamer: Suda's up for some revenge too, for the parts of the first game that let him - and, as it happens, us - down. "I wasn't that satisfied with the open world," he admits now. "I wanted to make a lot more stuff, more detail. So this time in No More Heroes 2, I want to take my revenge. And actually, the theme of No More Heroes 2 is revenge, so..." Compare this with a later March 2010 interview with Video Gamer where Suda says: "We were concerned whether it was necessary to have the open world, which is not really related to the action game. I realised that - and the team realised that - well, we don't need it. We just need to put our effort into making a better action game, rather than creating an open world system." Definitely seems like it was cut in development, but I wonder how far along the open world got before it was axed? You see, I quite like the pixel mist coming out of the bodies. It's like 'Oh, yeah. They're just video game characters. Just pixels. No guilt in killing here'
While I'm not necessarily staunchly for or against his inclusion, I believe *Travis Touchdown* (the main "protagonist" of the No More Heroes franchise) is worth keeping an eye on. Now I have no real attachment to the No More Heroes series (though I am interested to play the games). But I think if more people thought about Travis in relation to Nintendo (and how it is sort of similar to Bayonetta) it seems obvious. He just hasn't been looked at too much because, like Bayonetta, he is a smaller, more mature character. Travis would be definitely be a chatacter that, like Bayonetta, would spark a heated debate whether or not he deserves to get in or not / why he was "chosen over other characters" / he should have more of a legacy (you get the idea). The reason why I think Travis has a decent enough chance requires a look at his history and the future of the character. Travis first appeared in No More Heroes. A game originally released exclusively for the Nintendo Wii (later ported to other consoles, but creator still thinks Wii verison is the best). Then a little over two years later, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle was released exclusively for the Wii (and, to my knowledge, hasn't been ported to anything else). No More Heroes then laid dormant for over half a decade up until recently when Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. But what does this history lesson have to do with Travis getting into Smash? Well let me get into that now. No More Heroes is a franchise predominantly associated with Nintendo consoles (though that isn't saying much since the franchise is pretty darn niche). But the creator of No More Heroes, Goichi Suda (commonly goes by Suda51), has recently been trying to push No More Heroes a lot recently. In fact, he desperately wants to make a true No More Heroes 3 (a game every fan of the series wants to happen), but he had to make the recent spinoff since he didn't have a large enough team nor the funds to make NMH3 happen. Suda51 is now hoping Travis Strikes Again will get decent enough sales to get the greenlight on NMH3. Suda51 also wants to port the first two NMH games to the Switch, but similarly to NMH3, he hopes TSA will help him with that. (Though I believe NMH3 was teased at the end of TSA, so just something to keep in mind.) With all that said in done, here is the reason why he may have a chance in Smash. Bayonetta was originally on all other major consoles. But then Platinum Games wanted to make a sequal, but they met development troubles when no one would fund it. That is... no one other than Nintendo. That's why Bayonetta 2 is a Nintendo exclusive. That's why Bayonetta 3 is a Switch exclusive. Bayonetta is now viewed as predominantly a Nintendo character (regardless of your opinion on that view, that's how she's seen now). Nintendo realized, while the character wasn't exactly mainstream (like Fire Emblem, EarthBound, etc.) Bayonetta could be made more relevant just by her inclusion in Super Smash Bros. And helping out a smaller character then, could hell them make more bank potentially in the future. So let's think about this... Travis is arguably more associated with Nintendo than Bayonetta was at the time of her inclusion in Smash, Suda51 wants his niche character to become more recognized, Suda51 needs help funding NMH ports / NMH3, and Suda51 even prefers the NMH games on Nintendo consoles (and already has an exclusive spinoff NMH game on Switch without Nintendo's aid)! Who knows if Nintendo will actually help fund NMH3 like they did with Bayonetta 2, but nevertheless Nintendo realized that getting these niche franchises to be basically their own will only help Nintendo make money. Now, again, you may think I'm just a fanboy for Travis Touchdown or No More Heroes. But, again, I've *never* played a No More Heroes game and have little attachment to the character. And while I very much want to play NMH sometime soon (those ports to Switch wouldn't hurt), he isn't exactly my tippity-top top (c'mon Sakurai, you know who would perfect DeeLC). I just try to be objective with my Smash speculation. And I just think this is a logical thing that could happen. Regardless of you or I's opinion on Travis, that's why I think Nintendo may do include him... it would be that much of a surprise that could potentially benefit them more in the future. Because c'mon, no one predicted Bayonetta, and no one predicted Joker. No one is predicting Travis, and regardless of his more vulgar and mature personality (which isn't an issue as shown with Snake and Bayonetta), I think he has a chance. Not saying a lock, but maybe people should keep an eye on Travis more. But of course, since Nintendo are the kings of left field, they could put in literally anyore for all I know; logical predictions be darned. I'd say Monster Hunter makes so much sense as it's extremely popular and has stuff in Smash now, but it is such an obvious pick that I wonder if Nintendo would even do it for DLC now. At the end of the day, who really knows... these are just all my silly ideas. Regardless, thanks for reading! I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts!
It would be great, but Suda's games are for a niche audience and the only thing Nintendo wants is to sell DLC, so I only expect big names (regardless if they deserve it or not)
Travelers of the Stars I imagine Travis will end up in smash at some point, just not Smash Ultimate though. Suda51 said it would be impossible for him to be in the game, essentially deconfirming him.
I actually agree with him on ending travis story in nmh2. The story ended well with travis hitting both of his goals . It would be awesome if suda made a game around Shinbou or Henry. Prequels perhaps? But hey we got NMH3 coming out later so cant complain either
Sure, but it kinda ruins the feeling of tedium you're meant to experience when making the money to get to the next target. He wanted it that way to push in the fact Travis is just another guy with a job or multiple jobs just to stay alive like you and me. The struggle with employment and careers is a constant theme in games he's directed/produced. Also it reinforces Suda's want to have no chosen one/beloved hero type lead characters
Did you know that in the upcoming parenting sim, No More Kiddos, you take control of Travis Touchdown during married life as he has to bring up two little monsters with the help of only Sylvia and his cat Jeane? To save the game, you don't take a shit, you change a diaper Diapers are ammunition, when random assassin assholes break in you gotta throw the diapers at their face and make them leave, or else it's game over!
I got all excited during the very last bit with Sakurai thinking it was going to lead into something like how he wants Travis Touchdown as a DLC character in Ultimate, but then was disappointed when it was just a lead-in to another video.
@@TheTrueJuan most of the negativity comes from the fact that it's a spin-off game with very different combat compared to the original 2 but overall I like it, if you like No More Heroes or any other of Suda51 games you'll like it

Who's here after NMHIII and NMH1 and 2's shadowdrop
I wonder if there'll be a follow-up video once NMH3 comes out in August.
Suda 51 needs to make a Star Wars game, just make it weird as hell!
Why would you want to limit suda's writing capabilities to a canon that's full of must follow mandates?
That's not how suda 51 rolls
@@mariano1196 srry I should have been more specific. I want them to make a game that wouldn't be cannon so they don't have to worry about that stuff
@Chandlier Mirage disney wars is too restrictive, they have an entire team dedicated to keeping every piece of media in place according to the mouse derises. Suda doesn't seem like the typd of guy that likes executive meddling
@@mariano1196 as opposed to star wars before it was owned by Disney, which was not restrictive at all.
So when Disney decided all the extra stuff was non canon to free up space for new stories, that was then being too strict?
@Chandlier Mirage exactly, except they even allowed directors to contradict established canon, so even that restriction isn't there.
You see, I quite like the pixel mist coming out of the bodies. It's like 'Oh, yeah. They're just video game characters. Just pixels. No guilt in killing here'
love how at 8:22 you use a pic of cactus/Jonatan Soderstrom impersonating Phil Fish
Matt should be in the next No More Hero games. He got me into the title and probably hundreds to thousands of others
Momento is second my favorite Nolan movie, right after The Dork Knoght.
This actually aged well
What's the point of game rating if games get heavily censored
Now this is more like it :3
Been waiting for a video of this from you guys. Nicely done!
He wanted a No More Heroes game that didn't star Travis? HELLO, GIVE US A GAME ABOUT HENRY!
(Though I believe NMH3 was teased at the end of TSA, so just something to keep in mind.)
With all that said in done, here is the reason why he may have a chance in Smash.
Travelers of the Stars Holy hecc. You dead wrote a whole essay in a RUclips comments section.

Thanks for the new eyes on No More Heroes. I don't know much about this series, but now i know more. They look pretty cool, these games.
I actually agree with him on ending travis story in nmh2. The story ended well with travis hitting both of his goals .
It would be awesome if suda made a game around Shinbou or Henry. Prequels perhaps?
But hey we got NMH3 coming out later so cant complain either
Robin Atkin Downes voices not one, but two prolific characters who wear aviators:
Travis Touchdown
Kazuhira Miller
Coincidence?
Did someone get played?.....
like a fiddle?
Don't forget he is known for another popular game character, the Medic in Team Fortress 2
Nmh also known as Johnny Knoxville's bizarre adventure
The best way to replay No More Heroes is with infinite money. That way you can just blast through and feel like a huge badass
Johnny Knoxville is now like what? I’m a video game character
Getting more well-deserved love. And in the spirit of the game, I'll watch this video while I take a save.
That story about them waiting for 20 minutes with no one showing up made me sad.
Matt McMuscles, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time
No More Heroes is one of my favorite games of all time. Thank you for making this video.
Did you know that in the upcoming parenting sim, No More Kiddos, you take control of Travis Touchdown during married life as he has to bring up two little monsters with the help of only Sylvia and his cat Jeane?
To save the game, you don't take a shit, you change a diaper
Diapers are ammunition, when random assassin assholes break in you gotta throw the diapers at their face and make them leave, or else it's game over!
The boss man is the only narrator for this series
Very fitting I get this in my suggestion feed some days after Matt's video on the Switch version
I got all excited during the very last bit with Sakurai thinking it was going to lead into something like how he wants Travis Touchdown as a DLC character in Ultimate, but then was disappointed when it was just a lead-in to another video.
I literally just started playing Travis Strikes Again after playing through the first 2 games
How are you liking it? I bought the only copy at my GameStop.
@@TheTrueJuan most of the negativity comes from the fact that it's a spin-off game with very different combat compared to the original 2 but overall I like it, if you like No More Heroes or any other of Suda51 games you'll like it
@@Arcademan09 I'm loving it so far. If I can love and adore Flower, Sun &Rain, and the Silver Case games than I'm okay. Wish I could convince my brothers to play Co-op with me a bit more.
And the fact that Jasper Batt jr. is still the worst No More Heroes boss
Supposedly that may have been "the point" as it was likely Suda's way of saying "Sometimes the end of the journey isn't nearly as satisfying as the journey itself" but to be fair this is just what I've heard people speculate, I dunno if Suda himself ever commented on it.
@@BloodRedFox2008 Yeah
Let's shake Sr. Still takes that title.
@@jackgarcia5926 Second to Jasper Batt jr.
@@BloodRedFox2008 Second Form Jasper bat Jr. is straight up bullshit though. Beating that was satisfying.
Mad respect for including NMH
Good on you.
When my buddy got a wii I picked this up in a blockbuster clearance bin. Had now idea how much of a hidden gem it was
A video about No More Heroes with Matt McMuscles? Yes please!
I dont usually leave a like on videos but this one just brings me back so much, gold
2:20 I just warms my heart when I see these professionals in sports just big nerds in something like magic
