I've been shooting with the new Sony A7r V for the last week - this is a very interesting camera with one of the most advanced autofocus systems of any mirrorless to date. Cameras like the Canon R5 and Nikon Z9 have had expanded subject detection for a while, but Sony has now incorporated a dedicated processor. This processor acts as a neural engine for autofocus and subject recognition using AI.

Watched all of this and realised that I didn’t take in a single word Ted said due to the beautiful beard.
The thumbnail really doesn't do it justice..... That 2nd scene hit me like a brick when i realized how good it is.
The beard is indeed mighty.
The beard speaks for itself.
Well said. Lol.
Things I would like to see: more bearded Ted. That is a distinguished look, sir.
Ha! Thanks ;-)
Loving the comprehensive review!
Ted Ive been following you for years now. You have helped me a great deal to grow as a wedding photographer. Thank you for sharingyour humble wisdom and deep knowledge.
This is awesome, thanks for sharing Ted 😊
Picked mine up this week and just blown away with it .
Running the Tamron 35-150 beast lens which is a match made in heaven
I loved your honesty here. You didn’t pull any punches and you called it like you saw it, wry good, very good indeed.
+1 for your presets, having added a GFX100S to my kit last Fall I will probably stay with the 2019 A7Riv…few things I shoot actually move!
Ted, loving your honest breakdown of the camera review!👊
Ted 👌
As an owner of the A7RIV and A7IV my take away is that this combines all the features of both along with improved IBIS, AF, EVF, and rear Display, and small body ergonomics tweaks. There are many times I want features of one or the other and with the A7RV I think you can have both. If it works out I will sell both of those and move to this new one. Do you think it is missing anything from the other two? Also, thank you as always for you video.
I think we need “The Art of the Beard” episode. The new look rocks.
Hilarious! Thanks!
Wow what a review, I loved it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that camera.
Thanks, this is the best review yet (today) about the new A7r V. I’m an A7r IV user myself and a 99% stills photographer (prints on my Sony, family videos and social media pics on my iPhone 13), but see the advantage of this camera for hybrid shooters, especially that screen and AI. Like most other camera manufacturers, they’re gearing toward the hybrid shooter, lots of video improvements, and slowly leaving the stills photographer behind. I love Sony, but will make my way toward Leica or even Hasselblad in the future. But that’s me, I came from film.
Is the best review
Yes yes, we will love to see the review.
Thumbs up for your presets! Those are FIRE!
Great first look Ted. Thank you and love the beard!
Amazing a7RV review Ted! Not just an interesting camera but a superior camera that was much needed from the a7Riii. A7RV is definitely worth is price tag!
Is the fifth generation
Thank you so much for this! Have you had a chance to do another video about this camera after you had more of a chance to use it?
I was so worried about the R line having an articulating screen, so happy to see they went this route! Might just be close to perfect short of the lack Of high frame rate video options in 4K
Great preview!
Thank you
Great review. Love the beard! Pre-ordered the camera as I’ve been waiting to upgrade from my a7R iii.
This camera looks great! A bit out of my budget now but I waited a few years to get the A7RIV used for under $2k so I’ll probably just do the same for this one.
Wonderful review (as ever!). I also have the a7riv (mainly landscape with some bird and nature macro) and am tempted to upgrade even more after your review. (Insect detection, and focus bracketing!! whoo hooo!) And the IBIS! -- You got down to 1/6 at 135mm - I wonder -- do you think that would extend at 20mm down to 1/2 sec or so, which is where I'm often at for my waterfall shots. If so - bye-bye tripod for 90% of my shooting! That would be *awesome*. Flips screen helps so much for the low angle shots. and there sensor protection when off for changeing lens. That will cut down on dust spots. SO much to love about this camera!
The sonya7iv (and other sony series cameras) there is a display mode accessed by pushing up on the back rotating dial. This screen shows all the settings of the camera. With touch enabled every setting of the camera is available by touch. I have yet to see a RUclips reviewer mention this. This quick screen menu an the Sony A7RV might be the equivalent to this old display. Any way just to let you know that I really appreciate the reviews that you share.
Thank you for the review.
@Theartofphotography. I won gear? When did I enter a contest?
god how useful this video is!!! thanks man, i watched whole video and i found that I knew about camera. please make more useful contents like this about alphabetic expressions of photography and Video camera. thanks a lot, subscribed
Love the beard man!! Ur rocking it !!!!
Awesome in depth review, thank you! Did you shoot this video using this camera?
I'd love to upgrade from my a7rIII because you can shoot in compressed small and medium resolutions.
Hope one day there is no grain and noise in the photos that it becomes an effect to be added in post processing when wanted where we can push the iso as high as available exactly in low light conditions.
The Sony A74 and Sony 7R5 together would make a great hybrid setup
Don't you think the A7RV beats the A7IV for video and stills? The IBIS stuff seems amazing for video.
As alway, totally enjoyed your review, an honest assessment. As an owner of Sony’s A1s, there does not seem to be a significant improvement to change to the A7r5. Albeit, the AI focus is impressive but I have not had any major issues with my Sony A1s. I will sit out and wait for either an A1 firmware upgrade or a Sony A1 2. Just my two cents
Would like to see a review of the Focus Stacking. It appears to have some interesting options, but I'm not finding any in depth reviews on the you tube.
May I ask what camera and lens used for your video? So sharp and so clear!
Looking good.
Hey Ted, i would really like to see the full user review now 1 year later, im thinking about getting one!
It really misses a lot of opportunities for flash photography without the 1/400s sync speed as the A1. I think it is a huge miscalculation for a high resolution camera. 😢
That screen… o my goodness… this is my next camera. Might take a couple of years but this is my next camera
I will be buying the A7rV fir sure!!
Would u please compare the low light performance between A7R5's 26m lossless compressed raw and A7iii's raw? I think this is a critical point that could change the upgrade decision for an existing A7iii owner.
Waiting for the full review
Sony A7r V. The price corresponds to the quality. Respect Ted.
I wonder if the EVF resolution still drops dramatically when you set the anti flicker on.
When are we going to see these features on the Alpha 1 - via firmware update?
I don't know, but I think the best screen articulation is that of the Sony Alpha SLT-A77, which can even be used to take selfies without any difficulty. I don't understand how those who make cameras for Sony don't look at what they've done before.
Wow Ted you look great!
Many mention that the ibis is amazing in this camera, from your point of view and equipments you used has the best?
It appears the grey hair in your left eye was sharp using the A7SM3! You said some about AWB is better and you showed noise with the lit candle, well to return to the past my A7S could make night turn to day with stars and AWB captured the atmosphere gas colors along with the Milky Way Yin and Yang colors around pegasus back then using C1. You will need to wait till summer or head south below the equator for some warm weather to test for gas colors. With so many options you may have to carry a big review book just to know what you have, I think I learned more about photography reading a couple of books on the A7S and now the A7SM3's is as thick as a NY city phone book (if they still have one). If only they will bring back the Digital Filter on camera app, MW's above a lit town without PS is great, makes the A7S and A7SM2 keepers for night play forever.
Fantastic Ted! Your critisim words were all on the point! We Sony users all can relate.
Thank you! Still a great camera but I wish they could one day clean up the interface.
🤝
@@theartofphotography ...clean up the interface 👏
So, what about the banding on the 7RV vs 7RIV at 4:38? The IV seems much better in that regard.
Does this camera bin pixels in all modes and what is the affect on the final result when compared to the Siii?
I got a sony with the tilt out screen and I have never used it or wanted to use it,in my opinion it is useless unless you work on your knees a lot which I don't...I am sure there are people hat love it and use it or find a way to use it... the new Sony looks interesting I thought about buying on but I got a Canon R5 and glass to use with it only have 2 old sony lens, I am not big on the sd cards...maybe one day...Nice video...
When is the Sony a1 replacement coming out I want to by the a1 in January
Hi Ted. A wonderful review. You 're number ONE !
Today I bought a Sony 7R V and 2 lenses (50 mm 1.2 and 16-35 2.8) and a bunch more.
I am not at all interested in the photographic capabilities of this camera. I'm only interested in the video.
I don't understand at all where to start setting up the camera, since there are thousands of them in it.
Do we, your subscribers, have any opportunity in the near future to hear from you useful information about video shooting? Sincerely, Sasha NY
Another game changer here folks
Are there compact full frame lenses nowadays, or are they mostly big and heavy (compared to apsc)? I’ve been appreciating compact and lightweight fuji stuff, so I never even considered full frame. But this camera, and the FX3 look really nice.
Thanks for teaching me Volca Drum Cuckoo :)
I often wonder why we always talk about firmware. I mean basically there must be an OS for the hardware and on top of that the actual apps if you like that gives us the features. I can understand that there is a stronger processer in this model, but basically that hardware architecture is the same. There must definetely be an OS compilation for each new processor definition, but not separate the app functions from the basic operating system in cameras?
How does the video compare to the A7Siii? Interested as they are priced the same
@5:20 it shows a .ARW file, but I thought editing a7r5 raws was not available yet?
Hi, do you have a demo video or web page with samples of Fujified and Kodafied ?
Great!
best in class
Does this make the A7iv (not the r version) obsolete? Apart from the substantial price difference is there anywhere the A7iv is ahead? Is 33mp more practical for amateur enthusiasts perhaps? I shoot only stills, no video , mainly on primes. Was just about to upgrade from iii to iv to get better cropping capacity, ergonomics and focusing but now not sure. Of course there is the price……..
Why 61mp? Is it only for cropping or is there a different aesthetic look vs 33mp. Thank you.
What's your review on Nikon D5600 please?
Do you think that it is a good camera for wildlife and sports photography?
When do you think it will be a new a1?
Ok million dollar question???? Can you set the shutter beyond 30sec? (this is my peeve of peeves with all digital bodies haha). Well I'm beyond excited for the 9.48m viewfinder! and looks like a radical improvement in high iso noise (have never been That impressed with the r2, r3, or r4 for noise especially in comparison to nikon and most def new canons..so very welcome news. AI looks cool, look forward to seeing or using more on this. The menu system is tough to hear that you can't swipe and bit of challenge to nav (Sony engineers use smartphones, right?....why reinvent the wheel?) anyway I manage the menus with all other other R's surely will figure this one out too. Does look like a worthy upgrade from the r4, or should I wait for the A7 v instead...hmmm
Ted you CANNOT just come out with a full beard and not say a word about it 😂. Man had me tripping I was like I could’ve sword I watched your latest videos I’m not crazy
Great content as always... one critique... the vast majority of us have little or no frame of reference as a Leica M11 as a comparison. I live in the capital of California and I'd have to drive 90 mins to get to a camera store that sells Leica's. LOL
When you did the ISO tests, you shot jpg, did you turn off noise reduction?
Which camera and lens you are using for making this video ?
Loving the beard, Ted
Sorry for asking an off topic question, and I really hope that you won’t mind me asking. What mic have you used in this video?
pixelshift, and sd-card performance (since cf-express is so espensive) please.
Nice honest opinion. One very important thing that you forgot to mention is, that it has a super slow Mechanical Shutter. The A1 can be used mainly with the ES but still has a fast MS. The RV is unusable because it is so slow. Lots of Rolling shutter, so you will use it mainly with MS. But what the hell, they didn't add a faster shutter at least to this camera, as you depend so much on it. 10 FPS in 2022 / 2023 is a big joke. 4K60 is also not full read out and has a crop. That is frustrating, too!
Slow mechanical shutter? They're the same.
Did anyone feel the body get warm with normal shooting? I’m trying to figure out why mine is getting warm. Thanks!
Dear Ted,
Thank you for the video, here some questions:
What do you mean by ISO sensitivity which you said have been improved in this new camera model, as ISO does not change the sensitivity of the sensor or the light coming into the camera?
How can 15 stops of dynamic range be expressed with a bit depth of 14?
P.S. Insects are also animals....
There is less noise at the same ISO sensitivity, this is the improvement
I see only autofocus improvement at its best in this camera and you rightly pointed that why this upgrade can't be effected in Sony A1 Mark two!! Yes, Sony has come up with revolutionary camera system with their different categories of full frame staff but in doing so they put into these systems something that remains strange like they are too sticky not to incorporate a fully articulating screen and an easy to use less complicated menu system for a very long time and they get world of criticism for not listening to the users!! But it's enterprising that Sony is always a top brass when it comes to research and development of the newer equipments!! Every other camera companies don't have cameras which are fully equipped and they struggle more to put almost everything in a single camera , perhaps it's a business tactic to see more in another equipment than in one, Sony probably have also this in their mind and they are good at many sides like this Alpha R-V but in the video section which other R series is meant for disappoints in this latest model despite high resolution view finder and advanced articulating screen, but will it bring happy-at-last customers?!! I'd like to see video shoots from R-V to watch how much jitters this one bring forth!! People are ready to pay but they definitely dislike to buy the same thing with little improved on time and again and I here's why people ready to break bank once for a Leica rather buying another of the same improved Leica and Leica have no dearth to catch the greed of customers to have one and sleep almost for a lifetime with the dreaded lergy of losing money again sooner for a better in the same category!!
Hopefully the a9iii will have a ~30MP sensor with 6K60p internal (RAW) recording and oversampled 4K60/120p with full sensor readout.
Why would you really choose a A9iii over an used A1?
@@terje5723 because I'd rather have full sensor readout uncropped 4K60p or possibly 6K60p (The Sony a1 uses pixel binning or line skipping for its 4K60p mode which is inferior) and I don't need 50MP I'd be totally fine with a ~30MP sensor. That way even oversampled 4K120p might be possible because the camera has to process way fewer pixels.
ALL THINGS ASIDE, LOVING THE BEARD!!!
ugh should i go for a7rv or just sony a7iv for street and landscape ish
Why the stabilisation on photography cameras not as good as action cameras?
It would be nice to see a review of this Sony A 7r V against Canon R 5
As a hobby wildlife/nature photographer the A1 is the natural/ideal choice but far out of reach price wise. The big take from the A7rV launch is the new AI chip. Olympus and Canon already have this more advanced item recognition but it has been lacking on Sony's (from lack of hardware it now seems), so since autofocus performance is so important for Sony I would guess all new cameras from Sony will now get this new chip and that renders the current A1 somewhat "obsolete" :) Still hoping for that high performance APS-C body that us hobbyist wildlifers could afford
Expensive point and shoot that may take the challenge and enjoyment out of photography. Next upgrade, cameras will have a dialogue with the 'photographer' as they hover nearby discussing the next challenge!
I'm hoping they make a A7C II with the new rear screen (quality articulation and size) - improved awb - sensor cover - front dial.
£2500 hopefully (my budget) 😆
could care less about the 8K - I shoot 1080 for social media 😆
Seems to me Sony needs more software developers to be able to deliver features like focus bracketing on their flagship camera Alpha 1 before it's released in the next "regular" camera model. If this happens more often people won't understand why they supposed to purchase a super expensive flagship camera, if it doesn't get the latest and greatest features first.
It’s not lack of designers. It’s a marketing strategy. If you keep updating, you defeat the purpose of upgrading.
@@therigobertodelgado1275 If you don't people will sooner or later switch to another camera brand. You need to find a balance - like for example provide some functions like bulb timer or focus breathing compensation, but leave the improved af for the next generation of camera.
Just disappointing about the shutter speed. I understand it’s a massive amount of sensor data to process but why isn’t the electronic shutter faster than the mechanical?
Dude, I love your beard. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This or the eos R5?
❤
The slo-mo is soo. . OH La La
This as good as the Sony a1?
More Beard Ted, we want to see more beard!💪🏾
Awesome beard
The a7siii / fx3 won’t get focus breathing compensation because it doesn’t have enough megapixels!
Breathing Comp is done digitally - not by re-scaling the sensor area. It's on the FX6, which is a 10 megapixel sensor.
@@theartofphotography oh! I stand corrected. I knew it was done digitally, but I assumed that there wasn’t enough pixels to do the zooming, i.e. there would be too much quality loss with only 10mp
8k is at 4-2-0 and significant crop
Really a shame that in now 2023 Sony can’t make a more intuitive interface. And speaking of the screen the articulations are cool but the resolution is less than stellar…still. Look at Canon has done with the R6 II. Very intuitive interface and menus and the rear screen is bright and gorgeous to look at. I think this is a preview of things to come in the Canon R5 II, and it will be interesting to see how else that model will compare to this Sony. Too bad about that Canon lens strategy though.
