By the way, Jay was WRONG about Halloween being the "most profitable independent film" and Rich was CORRECT about it being Mad Max. Halloween earned $70mil on a 300-325k budget, Mad Max earned $100mil on a 350-400k budget. Has anyone informed JAY that he was WRONG and that RICH was CORRECT? Someone should really let those guys know.
Technically, if they counted porn as "independent film", then Deep Throat would smoke both of them....though most of the money went to the mob...so it might be hard to get a totally accurate count.

That's a bit weird. If he was offered Clueless and H6 at the same time it must have been 95 or 94, and horror movies were in a slump then. Then Scream revived the genre in 96.

Halloween III is already perfect. Just make Halloween VI (because they stop with numbered titles after 5) and make it a new anthology film with a subtitle. Hopefully with another new Carpenter score. You could even call it Halloween 14 to really confuse people.
It is WEIRD hearing Mike drop Trivia that's alien to jay, that would be like Jay dropping Star Trek trivia during one of those movie commentaries that Mike or Rich didn't know about.

9:08 - Now that Scream VI has come and gone, I have a feeling that Ghostface will be the next horror movie slasher to go into orbit. The tagline on the movie poster will be: "In space, no one can hear you. Scream."
My theory is Mike never went to space because the content was always taken too seriously, or the movies were more grounded in just enough reality, for whatever reason, for the franchise to remain relatively canny. Jason had that slow decline into the bizarre and unnatural/supernatural and also began to "travel" I guess. Leprechaun and Hellraiser were already bizarre and unnatural enough, I think eldritch horror and space make for fond bedfellows. If Halloween had been treated as a comedy at some point & Michael had been turned into a zombie, gone to New York or somewhere equally contextually silly (albeit terrestrial to begin with), been involved with a plot with a magic dagger and the existence of hell, it might have been be a different story. Why, though, Jason and Michael's plot lines diverge so much is a much harder question to answer, as early in their timelines they seemed to share enough in common as horror villains. Big mute man with scary mask and no spare clothes (imagine the smelle) is pure evil, has an insatiable bloodlust, wields a large handheld blade in one hand, and just kills indiscriminately. Frankly it's a little surprising Freddy didn't go to space. This is also I think why we won't get ghostface in space, although that would be a great way to be meta, even if it is outdated.

I never really got the idea that he was ever "just a person" in this movie tbh. The ending just cements that he's something a bit more than that, closer to a force of nature than just a crazy guy.
I guess from John Carpenter's perspective is that it could literally be anyone you see on the street but be a true force of evil. A much scarier explanation than that cult explanation from the sequels.

The nature of Michael is all over the place in the first film, as much as it was in the later ones. He's an inhuman monster, but he drives around in a car and even walks the streets in his getup. He played the prank of dressing up as the boyfriend, and went to the trouble of stealing his sister's headstone and then making a display with some random girl. Picture him lugging that headstone to his car. Picture him, in the middle of his killing spree, running out to get the headstone and bring it back for his display.

That despite their appearances they're unnaturally clever and dangerous, when most of the big ones only get big due to police negligence. Halloween was filmed in my home town, South Pasadena. The street Laurie walks down when Michael Myers is watching her is where our public library is located. It used to be that the Myers house and the other houses in the film were all on that same street. There are a couple of nearby locations, but nearly the whole film is shot within a couple of city blocks. Occasionally people will make pilgrimages to "Haddonfield." I went on a date once with a girl who was a big horror movie fan, and we strolled around all the settings from Halloween. Having seen the film, I don't really know anymore whether it's weirder to see my home town in the famous horror movie, or to stop by places in this area, look across the street and see the Myers house, or something. I guess the green trees never bothered me because that's the way it is here; fall never quite happens here. So it looked like October always looks here. Never occurred to me as I watched the film it would be any different.
They said that the guy who bought the Myers house moved it onto land he didn’t own and then bought the land later. What really happened is that he moved it onto land owned by the city without permission and then the city said “Fine, whatever.”.
In the mid 80's there was a compilation movie called Terror in the aisles right? When they show the scene where Laurie drops the knife, this Mexican guy yells "don't drop the knife you ass-hole! When Jay mentioned it, I remembered that scene would crack me up!

I know Jay mentioned that the dude openly hated the original while filming but even casting him was insane. Freddy is a tall, thin, cat-like predator and they cast a dude that's 5-4 to play him. The way he waddles around is enough to take you out of it.

Who else had the opposite reaction as Rich Evans after Mike started pointing out the leaves? As they pointed it out each scene, I became honestly more and more impressed with John Carpenter and that attention to detail. It's not something that I would have ever noticed, but I think it did a lot to sell the Midwestern-ness of Halloween.
Also, I can't attest to how common this is, but there are schools with outdoor-facing classrooms in the Midwest. I went to one briefly when I was but a bab and it gets fairly cold here in the winter (not like Minnesota cold but freezing temps are common). Might just be an old-timey thing since it was an older rural school. Anyway, the look of that school actually adds to the atmosphere for me because I remember a couple Halloweens spent in a classroom like that one. Throw in a couple shots of some cornfields and we're in Haddonfield, IL baby

I love how so much of the first film had the horror right there staring you in the face. Traditional logic would say having him standing in the middle of the backyard in broad daylight wouldn't be scary at all, but with a talented filmmaker you can make it even more disturbing that way. ...and they talk about the weather instead of that iconic shot...:c

I did a little bit of math and Halloween made its money back about 215 times over. So when Mike and Jay say it made all the moneies they weren't kidding. That's crazy.
I just don't get this franchise at all. At this point, Michael Myers is straight-up invincible - in the most recent one, he's stabbed roughly 600 times by a mob of over 100 people, and he just calmly gets back up. How is there any dramatic tension in a story beat that involves him being stabbed or shot?
Ideally, I don’t want to have a Michael Myers vs (Insert other horror icon), but I don’t see what else there is to do with him at this point. Normal people can’t defeat him, apparently.

"Why would Michael Myers want to scare someone?" Cause he's a murderous child in the guise of a 21 year old man. He gets off on the fright of his victims, it empowers him, it excites him. Literally all serial murderers share this trait. That's what made Michael Myers this scary entity to begin with, he toys with his prey like a cat with a mouse. He doesn't strike immediately which builds the tension and suspense, so when the kill finally happens you're off guard, because he's been toying with them, for so long.
You're absolutely right. He wants to spread fear before he kills his victims. That might explain why he didn't kill the baby in the 2018 film. The baby couldn't experience fear.
Now he does Kung fu as a 70 year old man and fights entire crowds of people. Nothing scarier than that. Luckily we have 70 year old woman ready to take him on in the next film. Hopefully they have a Matrix fight scene at the end.
The beans thing is real. It's in Halloween Resurrection, and they find the sewer corridor connected to the basement or something, and they find a dirty cot there with a pot of beans and headless rats. Though I don't know if it's implied that was real or set-dressing Busta Rhymes' crew put in

In discussing the Michael wearing the ghost costume scene in the original, frankly, in hindsight, I think it would have been far cooler/scarier if the door opened and it was Mike standing there in his regular mask. No knife, just him. PJ has no reason to fear the mask, she doesn't even know Mike exists. She could easily have assumed her boyfriend had hid it and pulled it out to scare her when he left for food. What a great image that would have been. The door slowly opening and the shape is standing there, black eyes and empty features.

God, the theatrical ending to HALLOWEEN 6 was so depressing. One scream, a stupid closeup of a Halloween pumpkin, and then Donald Pleasence is gone from our screens forever. At least the Producer's Cut ending suggested the story would continue for Dr. Loomis and Michael, even if we'd never get to see it.

It's the same mask in the first two movies, but it looks different because it had been rolled up and stuffed in thr back pocket of a pair of pants for over 2 years when they made the sequel. I guess they either stopped making the William Shatner mask, or the studio thought it felt too cheap not to manufacture a new one

9:08 - Now that Scream VI has come and gone, I have a feeling that Ghostface will be the next horror movie slasher to go into orbit. The tagline on the movie poster will be: "In space, no one can hear you. Scream."
My theory is Mike never went to space because the content was always taken too seriously, or the movies were more grounded in just enough reality, for whatever reason, for the franchise to remain relatively canny. Jason had that slow decline into the bizarre and unnatural/supernatural and also began to "travel" I guess. Leprechaun and Hellraiser were already bizarre and unnatural enough, I think eldritch horror and space make for fond bedfellows.
If Halloween had been treated as a comedy at some point & Michael had been turned into a zombie, gone to New York or somewhere equally contextually silly (albeit terrestrial to begin with), been involved with a plot with a magic dagger and the existence of hell, it might have been be a different story. Why, though, Jason and Michael's plot lines diverge so much is a much harder question to answer, as early in their timelines they seemed to share enough in common as horror villains. Big mute man with scary mask and no spare clothes (imagine the smelle) is pure evil, has an insatiable bloodlust, wields a large handheld blade in one hand, and just kills indiscriminately. Frankly it's a little surprising Freddy didn't go to space. This is also I think why we won't get ghostface in space, although that would be a great way to be meta, even if it is outdated.

I never really got the idea that he was ever "just a person" in this movie tbh. The ending just cements that he's something a bit more than that, closer to a force of nature than just a crazy guy.
I guess from John Carpenter's perspective is that it could literally be anyone you see on the street but be a true force of evil. A much scarier explanation than that cult explanation from the sequels.
@@irwinisidro I’m not gonna defend the cult stuff because the Thorn is pretty terrible, but I don’t think that him maybe being just some random guy off the street really precludes him being a force of pure evil.
The nature of Michael is all over the place in the first film, as much as it was in the later ones. He's an inhuman monster, but he drives around in a car and even walks the streets in his getup. He played the prank of dressing up as the boyfriend, and went to the trouble of stealing his sister's headstone and then making a display with some random girl. Picture him lugging that headstone to his car. Picture him, in the middle of his killing spree, running out to get the headstone and bring it back for his display.

That despite their appearances they're unnaturally clever and dangerous, when most of the big ones only get big due to police negligence. The only killer they actually caught in a Timely Manner was the Vampire of Sacramento, and he was a scrawny fucker that could only kill because he got the drop on people with a gun.

Halloween was filmed in my home town, South Pasadena. The street Laurie walks down when Michael Myers is watching her is where our public library is located. It used to be that the Myers house and the other houses in the film were all on that same street. There are a couple of nearby locations, but nearly the whole film is shot within a couple of city blocks. Occasionally people will make pilgrimages to "Haddonfield." I went on a date once with a girl who was a big horror movie fan, and we strolled around all the settings from Halloween. Having seen the film, I don't really know anymore whether it's weirder to see my home town in the famous horror movie, or to stop by places in this area, look across the street and see the Myers house, or something. I guess the green trees never bothered me because that's the way it is here; fall never quite happens here. So it looked like October always looks here. Never occurred to me as I watched the film it would be any different.

Also, they mentioned the Nightmare On Elm Street remake and it has to be reiterated whenever mentioned that it is *the* worst horror remake ever. Just fn awful. I know Jay mentioned that the dude openly hated the original while filming but even casting him was insane. Freddy is a tall, thin, cat-like predator and they cast a dude that's 5-4 to play him. The way he waddles around is enough to take you out of it.

Who else had the opposite reaction as Rich Evans after Mike started pointing out the leaves? As they pointed it out each scene, I became honestly more and more impressed with John Carpenter and that attention to detail. It's not something that I would have ever noticed, but I think it did a lot to sell the Midwestern-ness of Halloween.
Also, I can't attest to how common this is, but there are schools with outdoor-facing classrooms in the Midwest. I went to one briefly when I was but a bab and it gets fairly cold here in the winter (not like Minnesota cold but freezing temps are common). Might just be an old-timey thing since it was an older rural school. Anyway, the look of that school actually adds to the atmosphere for me because I remember a couple Halloweens spent in a classroom like that one. Throw in a couple shots of some cornfields and we're in Haddonfield, IL baby

I love how so much of the first film had the horror right there staring you in the face. Traditional logic would say having him standing in the middle of the backyard in broad daylight wouldn't be scary at all, but with a talented filmmaker you can make it even more disturbing that way.

I just don't get this franchise at all. At this point, Michael Myers is straight-up invincible - in the most recent one, he's stabbed roughly 600 times by a mob of over 100 people, and he just calmly gets back up. How is there any dramatic tension in a story beat that involves him being stabbed or shot?
Why aren't there any weebs in that town that own katanas? Someone has to chop him into bits at one point

I love how Mike's childhood memories involve some kind of whimsy-destroying realism, like the Mike Meyers guy getting pulled away from eating to put the costume on. Explains a lot.

Cause he's a murderous child in the guise of a 21 year old man. He gets off on the fright of his victims, it empowers him, it excites him. Literally all serial murderers share this trait. That's what made Michael Myers this scary entity to begin with, he toys with his prey like a cat with a mouse. He doesn't strike immediately which builds the tension and suspense, so when the kill finally happens you're off guard, because he's been toying with them, for so long.
You're absolutely right. He wants to spread fear before he kills his victims.
That might explain why he didn't kill the baby in the 2018 film. The baby couldn't experience fear.
Now he does Kung fu as a 70 year old man and fights entire crowds of people. Nothing scarier than that. Luckily we have 70 year old woman ready to take him on in the next film. Hopefully they have a Matrix fight scene at the end.

In discussing the Michael wearing the ghost costume scene in the original, frankly, in hindsight, I think it would have been far cooler/scarier if the door opened and it was Mike standing there in his regular mask. No knife, just him. PJ has no reason to fear the mask, she doesn't even know Mike exists. She could easily have assumed her boyfriend had hid it and pulled it out to scare her when he left for food.
What a great image that would have been. The door slowly opening and the shape is standing there, black eyes and empty features.

God, the theatrical ending to HALLOWEEN 6 was so depressing. One scream, a stupid closeup of a Halloween pumpkin, and then Donald Pleasence is gone from our screens forever. At least the Producer's Cut ending suggested the story would continue for Dr. Loomis and Michael, even if we'd never get to see it.

Dumb question but does anyone know why each sequel has Michael wear a different face mask? I know its a small nitpick but I always get annoyed when I see the other movies and the mask is different ahaha Like did no one on set keep the oj mask?

It's the same mask in the first two movies, but it looks different because it had been rolled up and stuffed in thr back pocket of a pair of pants for over 2 years when they made the sequel. I guess they either stopped making the William Shatner mask, or the studio thought it felt too cheap not to manufacture a new one
