  • This video tutorial is part 2 (following on from Top Tip Tuesday:Handbuilding Pottery Tutorial; Making Sculptural Poppy Heads for the Garden (PART 1). In this video I run through the way that I decorate the sculptural poppy/seed heads with oxides and glass frit. They look amazing on a patio or deck or nestled in your garden borders for all year round interest.
    Hello again from The Pottery Corner my studio near Chichester on the South Coast of England.
    The Great Pottery Throwdown is back on the television for a new series and we are still in lockdown and I am missing my students! I hope this will inspire you to make your own sculptural seed/poppy heads. It would be great to see photos of your pieces via email to sarah@thepotterycorner.co.uk. Check out my Top Tip Tuesday videos for tips on clay related processes.
    If you wish to see items for sale from the studio head over to my Etsy shop or via my website at www.thepotterycorner.co.uk to view course information and the kiln services I offer. The links are below.
    Hope you have a chance to take a look. Do like and subscribe to see more from the studio. Cheers Sarah

    Oh My Goodness Miss Sarah! I love your approach to allowing the clay and treatments do their own thing..... I have been out to my MudShack trying to get another load of test tiles ready---since I went on a Glaze Binge....whoopsie! I am inspired to attempt one of these now---if the cold weather would just lighten up as I had to keep a scarf, double layers of pants and tops as well as double socks.....had to crank up the lil heater to try and bring temp up to tolerable.....will be a couple weeks before I get another weekend out there---perhaps it will finally be warmer by then! This Community is so wonderful! Everyone is so nice and supportive! Thank you Again!

Glad you're going to have a go at making a poppy head- they look great in the garden and well received gifts if you can bear to part with them! I am thinking as organic as the PoppyHeads are my Mother will probably snatch it for her lil apartment....LOL Oh I am so excited about the Monoprinting...I made my colored-Slip-Chalks (roughly a dozen in about 5 colors) I even had a swing at it with some underglazes on a small dish ... Right now this is my number one go to pottery channel. The biggest reason (of many many reasons): the finished work is shown. I am SOOOOOOOOO tired of channels that think they're done when they have the glaze applied to bisqueware. My take away there is that they are ashamed of the results.

    Thank you Sarah! Excellent tutorial... learned much! And didn't expect to see part 2 so soon! Love the glass frit, but I best not try since I use a community kiln. So glad I waited for part 2 before applying the finishing touches. I would have brushed on the oxide and wiped back, which is how I've always used oxide washes. But I can see your point about getting a smeared appearance with that technique. I use Maycos' stoneware washes, which are premixed oxides & very concentrated. And seeing the consistency of your mixture, it is obvious that I will need to dilute the Mayco copper wash quite a bit. Will be a while before mine is finished, but will definitely send pictures when done. Heard on the news tonight that the UK is having fewer COVID cases. Hope that is true, and that you'll be able to open up your studio again real soon! Thanks again & stay safe! Cheers from New Mexico USA. :0)

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      Thanks Joann - probably best not to use the glass in a community kiln - you'd not be best popular 😉. I do use oxides on my pieces and use it to 'pool' in the texture and wipe it back. However on these poppy heads I want a more organic look and this is why I try not to scrub the oxide on the surface. I've not tried the Match oxides - Mayco and I are not best friends 😂. Covid numbers are reducing and I'm hopeful that the studio can reopen but unlikely to be for several more weeks. It's been closed since the end of October- seems like forever! Do let me have some photos when your piece is finished - the first lot made my day!🙏

    Hello, Sarah. Thank you very much for the video❤ I would love to try working with copper oxide too but I can get only copper carbonate. Can it be used instead? I am also curious to know if oxides/carbonates affect other pieces' colours in the kiln at such a high temperature or not.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Год назад

      Hi and thanks so much for watching. I do have copper carbonate but haven't had such good results with this as with copper oxide. I would suggest you do some test tiles to see what happens. If the oxide is applied very thick then, yes, it does sometimes "blow" in the kiln onto other pieces so it is wise to put all the oxided pieces on one shelf together. Sometimes you get happy accidents though which can't be repeated! 😀

    • @limoncello4611
      @limoncello4611 Год назад

      @@thepotterycornerMany thanks for your reply! As well as you, I love unexpected results sometimes but information about "blowing" is extremely important for me as I share the kiln with other people, and I should care about them😊 As for the carbonate, I will do experiment with it then✨
