- Опубликовано: 11 июл 2024
- In this video tutorial I run through the whole making process to hand build sculptural poppy/seed heads out of Craft Crank clay for your garden. They look amazing on a patio or deck or nestled in your garden borders for all year round interest.
Hello again from The Pottery Corner my studio near Chichester on the South Coast of England.
The Great Pottery Throwdown is back on the television for a new series and this has inspired me to share my techniques for this handbuilding project. I hope this will inspire you to make your own sculptural seed/poppy heads. It would be great to see photos of your pieces via email to sarah@thepotterycorner.co.uk. Check out my Top Tip Tuesday videos for tips on clay related processes as well as the Kiln Opening videos where I discuss the glazes and finishes used on my own work and my students pieces. If you wish to see items for sale from the studio head over to my website at www.thepotterycorner.co.uk to view items in the online shop. Course information is also available together with kiln services. Hope you have a chance to take a look. Do like and subscribe to see more from the studio. Cheers Sarah

Wow Cher - what a lovely comment. How kind of you- much appreciated. I shall glow all day from your lovely words. Thanks for watching 🙏
I had never heard of Blue Peter & had to Google it - a can’t get enough of your British accent & expressions! We call the “whirler” a banding wheel in the US but I’ve decided to start calling it a “whirler” - that’s so much more fun! Sending much love & I can’t wait to make my first poppy. I’ll email you a picture when it’s all glazed! Cheers!
Thanks Natalie for your kind words. Blue Peter is a very long running children's programme where they do craft projects out of household items. They have each stage of the make ready for filming- just like I do on these big tutorials- very British institution! Can't wait to see your poppy head when finished. Thanks for watching the channel 😀

Thank you so much for this extremely informative video. I have been on a part time portfolio course and have really loved the ceramic workshops - I am doing some ceramic pieces for my final project. Watching videos like yours has been so useful and inspiring and I really appreciate the time and effort that it must take to make one. Once I’ve finished my course (only a few weeks now) I am going to have a go at making these. I am sure that most of my friends (and me!) would love one in their garden! (I’m UK Midlands).
Thanks so much Kathy for your lovely words. This video did take ages to make - both in terms of having the pieces at the right stage and filming, editing and uploading! New skills for a 50 something lady to learn. Good luck with your course and do send me pictures of your version via my website - link in the description. There is also the "Thanks" button above if you wanted to send me a cheeky tip for the free tuition ☺️

Watching from South Africa. Thank you to you and You Tube. Love these. Last worked with clay in 2002 but have been presented with an opportunity to participate in a new studio in my very small town. Fascinated with techniques which I have never seen so I want to try them all. At 77 I had better pull my finger. Thank you for strength and extra good health. These I have to make.
Thank you so much Michelle for your kind words. Pottery has no age limit so you go for it! So glad you are back to playing with clay after nearly 20 years. Thanks for watching.
Fabulous tutorial thank you. I have been wanting to have a go at these for ages and never quite knew where to start. Can't wait to have a go up here on the west coast of Scotland overlooking Arran.

@@thepotterycorner Hi Sarah, I am up to putting the ribs on the poppy seed. I dont have an extractor so will cut the ribs by hand. Could you pls tell me the measurements of your square cutter. I have tried cutting a couple of sizes but they either look too small or too big😂 thx Lorraine
@@lorrainetroughton4778 hi Lorraine - if you are hand making the spines you could use a small coil. My square extrude is about 1cm (10mm) across but you could vary the size according to your poppy head size. As you say, they look odd with spines too large (or indeed too small!). Glad you're joining those who are making- do email me a picture! Hope that helps 🙏
@@thepotterycorner thank you Sarah I will give it another go tomorrow and if that fails I will do it with the coils.🙏 Its 8.30 pm here and still 30degrees C tomorrow we are heading for 39C ....not ideal pottery temp😢😢
