  • Simple slab built trays and a spectacular bowl project that can be made with just a few stamps, a rolling pin and a sprinkle of creativity. You can add a thrown foot or use a coiled foot, may be add three balls of clay as a foot, endless possibilities. Lots of texture stamping possibilities to play with.

Vaughan, your kerchief bowls are spectacular! I agree, one thing that attracts me to ceramics is the infinite variety of projects and techniques. I could do this for 100 years and still be learning and trying new things.

next time when you attach the foot, try adding a very thin roll of clay between the two. Then you wouldn’t have lost that lovely extra rim. Also, the big one that you took the wrap off before you put it on the bowl, that white bucket on your table…..perfect matchup. Another bowl, but a different bottom. You could even make a rectangular slab base!

I noticed this morning that RUclips have put ads during my video. Is that just when I watch my video or does everyone get this? I have deliberately not monetized the channel to prevent these annoying ads appearing during my videos. Of course I do not read the terms of conditions so may be that is just the cost of downloading videos, nothing is free in life. Apologies for the annoying ads.

    • @2CraftySeniors
      @2CraftySeniors Год назад +1

Apparently in the terms there is a clause that RUclips can put ads onto anyone's videos whether you want them or not... and even if you haven't reached that 1,000 subscribers that you have to reach before you can monetize. So, whether you monetize or not, ads can appear... and often do once someone gets even a little popular. If you don't monetize, it just means RUclips makes all the cash. I tend to use "skip" when the ads become too much.

I believe that's a North Star slab roller. It's one of the few brands which adjusts the slab thickness by raising or lowering the roller, rather than having to insert shims in the bed. Great tip on getting square(ish) slabs Can't wait to try it. Those ovals seem to waste a lot space on the ends making me roll more slabs to fit that last piece. Those bowls are just fantastic.

Thank you for your wonderful video! I've been making large bowls similar to yours since the middle 70's, using lace pressed into the clay with slip painted over it to accentuate the pattern. One difference in technique is that I use pieces of old bed sheets to roll the clay on. It's not so hard to peel the clay off and leaves almost no mark. I can roll out thin enough to move easily. I love the way you glaze these large pots on the inside! I suspend mine on a jar over a large bowl to pour glaze over the outside after dipping the stem in a smaller bowl with glaze in it to glaze the stem. I have always made the stems the day before, but will try making and adding them immediately! That looks interesting!! I tried a slab with stamps, etc., yesterday!! What fun!!!!! Again, thank you for sharing! Ann Sciba

    Just for information...
Those two tools with the handles that you thought might be for wallpaper or plaster (they can be used for the plaster for sure) are also texture tools to add wood grain to things. You lay down a dark colour and let it dry, then lay a light colour over top and drag the tool in one direction, tipping it back and forth as you do, and it puts a nice wood grain down. Then let that dry before varnish or glaze is added. You can also use those pointy parts to drag other patterns onto projects.

I'll be watching. One other thing I do differently is use quilt batting, the soft kind that I can tear up, to stuff the curves after I get the bowl over the drape mold. It's strong enough to hold and, since it's going under the cloth the bowl is draped over, doesn't get dirty, while helping to hold the shape.

These are amazing! My question is what keeps them from warping as they dry?

Timing is everything with clay. I support the piece with sponges and soft paper when it is upside down, I only flip it right way up when it can support itself.

Love your videos, have just discovered them, they are
so informative and clear. Great ideas, great pottery, thanks so much for sharing. Wondering what you had that large piece of wood on (which the clay slab was laid) and it turned so easily? Thanks so much, M.K.M.

Gorgeous! Do you use pouring glazes for the sponging, and do you use multiple coats?

Any glaze works and the thicker the glaze the more runs.

If I could ask, where do you buy the foam you use for the slump moulds? Thanks

I have a question about your satin matte oatmeal glaze. I mixed up a batch using the recommendation of tin oxide. The tin oxide came as a black powder, and would not dissolve in the glaze mixture, it just sinks to the bottom. Is there a tin dioxide that I should use?

Here is where I buy it. psh.ca/collections/tin-oxide
It is always a white powder. I suspect they sent you Illmenite by mistake. Tin has gone up in price a lot. I may investigate using Ultrox Extra also available here. psh.ca/collections/ultrox-extra-zircon.
I will be ordering some in July or August so i will post the results of testing it.

Good Morning from Arizona. Could you tell me please Vaughan, how do I mend small cracks in my pottery that is drying to go in to bisque? Ty, you are great & so VERY talented.

You can buy a product called Patch Attach which will fill the crack, it will even re-join a broken handle.
