My favourite on the jars above is the Semi Matt Glaze, SMG. It is great on its own and over other glazes. They are all good and the Folk Art White is great on its own.

My tests revealed that the glazes got much better the more tin I used in them. Between 3.5% up to 7 %. I did split by adding 3.5% of tin and titanium dioxide in a glaze that worked OK. The DL2 worked as a white opaque but did nothing to other glazes when used over them. Good luck

Vaughn, have you ever done a video explaining what you do for record keeping of your glazes? You seem to have a great memory for those things. Can you demonstrate to those of us without good memories the important things to document for each glaze firing? Books and other pottery websites always recommend that detailed records about each glaze firing are a real help but I haven’t seen anyone explaining what exactly to keep track of. Thanks.
I am lucky to have built up in my mind what I need to know. I do keep a recipe book with a few notes on firing cycles. I was going to do a bunch of glaze videos this winter so we will see where that leads. Thanks.

I just down loaded the recipe. It looks nice but has some negative comments on thickness. That all depends on clay body and thickness of the glaze. My own clear goes cloudy if applied too thick.

That satin matt is definitely a great oatmeal glaze. I wonder if using zircopax (and some extra frit to counteract the refractory effect of zirconium) would be still as great. Would be much cheaper than tin.

This was really great. I am not finding iron ochre, per se, I see iron oxide yellow. Would that be correct? I have an old Oatmeal recipe from the 80's.. I really never knew what to do with it so I may experiment with that in combination over other glazes.

I am confused, and my apologies if this is not appropriate here. I have an old "Oatmeal" recipe from the 80's . In the past, I used it as a regular glaze, but it is horrible about flaking off as it dries, even with 2% bentonite. It gives a nice creamy matte result when dipped and fired. Do you think your use of the term "Oatmeal" different? I have had a 10k gm batch mixed up for years a mostly avoid using it. Seems like a waste to abandon it. Any suggestions? 51.6 feldspar 5.6 flint 18.8 whiting 8.6 zinc ox 15.4 epk Add 2.0 rutile, .75 nickel, 2 bentonite
The only thing I have used is Gum Arabic but it is expensive. I have a couple of glazes that flake too. I added a couple of pints Gum Arabic to a 5 gallon bucket of glaze and it stopped flaking. I also only apply the glaze thinly now. You could try CMC gum. It is usually the clay content that makes a glaze shrink lots.

It is most commonly known as Yellow Iron Oxide. I had some yellow ochre clay which contains yellow iron Oxide, I ran out of that so I will be ordering yellow Iron Oside.
Vaughan, I have never mixed my own glaze but would like to try an oatmeal. If you were making 2 kilos of glaze material, that would be about 4lb 7oz of dry material. How much water would I add? I only want 3 gallons of glaze. Probably a dumb question but ….
For 3 gallons of glaze you need to mix about 6kilos of dry material, then add 2 gallons of water and mix it up with the dry, sieve the glaze, adding a little of the remaining water at the end of sieving until you achieve a creamy consistency that covers your finger. It should not be milky. I mix the glazes thicker because it is hard to take water out if you make it too thin. When you glaze you have to refine the consistency. It should not be thick or it will flake off or crawl in the firing.
Hi, Vaughan Will the glazes that you have described reach ^7/8 in an electric kiln? Yes, I know that I can test but I am in a community studio and although we do tests it is not always the thing for one person. BTW I follow all of your posts and even though I have been potting for a long time, there is always something new to learn

Hi Vaughan, I've watched this video a few times since you posted it. I need an oatmeal glaze, but have had issues in the past. The main concern I have is with staining. I have a commercial oatmeal that I've been using for a long time, but I want to make my own. I would like to use it on the entire piece, such as a mug without having to use a liner glaze. Have you noticed any issues with DL2 staining? I'm going to run tests of course, but with so many glaze recipes I feel like it's going to take a while :) Thanks for all the videos and amazing info you are providing!
By staining do you mean adding commercial stains or the underneath glaze interacting with the oatmeal above, which is what I like to happen. They all seem to do that. I would try the SMO with 3 1/2% of both Tin Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Then increase the Tin and lower the other until you get the right opacity.
@@Vsmithpots Sorry, I meant staining like coffee stains inside of a mug. The oatmeal I currently use gets stained by coffee and tea really bad so I don't ever use it as a liner. I like the idea of the DL2 recipe because I probably won't need opacifiers on a lighter clay body. I plan on using DL2 by itself, so overlapping isn't an issue for me. Looks like it would be a great base glaze as well. The price of tin oxide is skyrocketing. Some suppliers are at $125/lb here in the US right now. So, I'm hoping to not use tin if possible at least until the price comes back down if it ever does.
Update, sorry...I found it by going back in the video. Not to worry. I got it. Thank you. I missed the second recipe :( Did anybody get it that can share it, please? It's the satin mat glaze that I missed.

Kitten's clear is my go to clear. I have never had it go cloudy. I mix it and take 300 ml, add 30 g of stain for a translucent color glaze. Bonus 🎨

Yes I have, it never looks as good, that is of course a matter of opinion.

I have so many videos now I forget where things are. All I do is place two fingers on the rim and use a paint brush to form a lip between the fingers.

It was a satin matte base I found somewhere, I added 7% tin for the oatmeal, then adjusted to 3 1/2% tin and titanium.

For those 4 recipes bases, I have try them with oxides colorants? Like Cooper, cobalt, nickel.

Hi, Vaughan Will the glazes that you have described reach ^7/8 in an electric kiln? Yes, I know that I can test but I am in a community studio and although we do tests it is not always the thing for one person. BTW I follow all of your posts and even though I have been potting for a long time, there is always something new to learn

Hi any way you would share your oatmeal and yellow glaze recipe. I would appreciate it. My ceramics teacher at the Chicago park district said she would make it if I gave her a recipe. Also what is the price range of your fish? I appreciate all your videos as well as pottery.

Hi Vaughan, I've watched this video a few times since you posted it. I need an oatmeal glaze, but have had issues in the past. The main concern I have is with staining. I have a commercial oatmeal that I've been using for a long time, but I want to make my own. I would like to use it on the entire piece, such as a mug without having to use a liner glaze. Have you noticed any issues with DL2 staining? I'm going to run tests of course, but with so many glaze recipes I feel like it's going to take a while :) Thanks for all the videos and amazing info you are providing!
By staining do you mean adding commercial stains or the underneath glaze interacting with the oatmeal above, which is what I like to happen. They all seem to do that. I would try the SMO with 3 1/2% of both Tin Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Then increase the Tin and lower the other until you get the right opacity.
@@Vsmithpots Sorry, I meant staining like coffee stains inside of a mug. The oatmeal I currently use gets stained by coffee and tea really bad so I don't ever use it as a liner. I like the idea of the DL2 recipe because I probably won't need opacifiers on a lighter clay body. I plan on using DL2 by itself, so overlapping isn't an issue for me. Looks like it would be a great base glaze as well. The price of tin oxide is skyrocketing. Some suppliers are at $125/lb here in the US right now. So, I'm hoping to not use tin if possible at least until the price comes back down if it ever does.

I keep meaning to ask, is the blue green copper red a previous cone 8 recipe? I've looked for a recipe and found a lot of turquoise recipes (VCT, etc) but can't find that one.

@@Vsmithpots There is a blue green copper red in John Britt's book on page 100. I don't know if it's the same one and haven't tried it yet.

As a heads up when they stop working, as they always do. You can spray WD40 into the piston spray mechanism, like new again.
