Pottery Top Tip: How to Use Plaster Hump Moulds - Pottery Video/Tutorial

  • In this video I show you how to use the plaster hump moulds we made in the previous video (see the Top Tip Tuesday playlist if you missed this episode). From rolling out the slab, pressing it over the mould, then finishing using the pottery wheel and adding texture from my handmade stamps - this video shows you how I finish the pieces ready for bisque firing. I use my Giffon Grip for turning/trimming the pieces and a nylon scrubby to smooth the edges for a professional finish.
    Sets of my handmade stamps are available from my Etsy shop (link below) if you’d like to purchase some that I have made.
    Hi I’m Sarah Amos. I gave up my day job and am now living the dream as a full-time potter and teacher, running courses from my studio, The Pottery Corner, in a little village just outside Chichester on the South Coast of England. With Cissy and Charlie, my studio companions, we welcome students of all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced, teaching throwing on the potters wheel as well as handbuilding techniques.
    I love to share my clay experience and knowledge by passing on pottery techniques in my Top Tip Tuesday videos; which include full tutorials on items to try out yourselves. I also sell my work via my Website and Etsy Shop. So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and let’s dive into what’s going on in The Pottery Corner today.
    Don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of when new content is published. Thanks for watching.

    Hi there. Today I watched your RUclips recordings - first time. My road to pottery began in July this year.
    I live on a farm in the Breede Valley winelands, two hours from Cape Town, South Africa. I find your recordings most informative and really enjoy your firm confidence with working with clay.

    Hi Sarah my tuppence contribution from Land O Lakes, Florida USA
    I really like my Giffin Grip and watching this video I just figured you must be supporting the wee bowl from the inside, DUH!
    This has given me an idea of printing up an attachment for the Giffin Grip Sliders that would support the pots from the inside meaning that you could trim all the way down on the outside of the pot. I will keep you posted if I get something that works well.
    I felt for the poor puppy having to clear off in fear.
    Be well!

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

    Great video :), can I ask is there a reason you don't do the initial trimming and shaping on the wheel itself instead of the banding wheel?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much for watching. Great to have you here. I find it easier to do the initial trimming on the whirler whilst on the mould but you would do it just as easily on the wheel. 😊

    It’s me , Sharon from South Carolina. I watched this again as I need to make a soup bowl for the Empty Bowls project. Potters in our area make bowls. Local restaurants provide the soup and people come, select a bowl they pay for and money is used to feed the homeless. Is the clay thick enough to carve a foot ring in the clay, or should it be put on when the piece is still on the mold. One year I went to the empty bowls event, had a bowl of soup and then bought several bowls for Christmas presents.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Год назад

      Hi Sharon - The Empty Bowls project is a great one. If you're wanting to add a footring put it onto the piece rather than trimming a footring in. Hope that helps and good luck! 😊

    I have a question for you, I have a tiffin grip but it doesnt seem to work, it never correctly centres my work, any idea why? Maybe its my works thats not centred, hahaha!!

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      Hmm interesting 🤔. It might be the work that's not centered as you say but shouldn't be a problem for a Griffin grip.
