  • Dakhni is a form of Urdu spoken in the Southern cities of India. This language has its roots in the capital of the country, Delhi. Dehlavi, which was spoken in Delhi was brought down to the South by various Muslim rulers like Alauddin Khilji and Muhammad bin Tughlaq when they came here for their conquests. Dehlavi amalgamated with local languages like Kannada, Tamil and Telugu to create Dakhni.
It’s interesting to note that the Dakhni spoken in Bengaluru sounds completely different from the one spoken in Chennai or even Hyderabad. Catch RJ Sarah (Shivajinagar Ki Salma) speak in these various dialects of Dakhni. Bengaluru’s very own Gully boy, Pasha bhai speaks to SoSouth on why he chose to rap in Dakhni and more.

I'm from Awadh(UP) and I understood it right away. It's somewhat common too! Usually, we use it to ask for an opinion.
For example, My dad is buying clothes for me; he'd show me what he has selected and ask "Samajh me araha hai inme se koi?"="Do you like any of these?" (Though translating word by word, it'd mean "Do you understand any of these?")

Exactly!!! Dakhani evolved before Urdu. The Dakhani Ghazals written from a female perspective known as Rekhti were quite popular in the north during the Sufi movement. TBH the people in the past have been more inclusive than the present day netizens. I’ve seen so many comments on Dakhani being ‘funny’ or ‘rude’, it may sound like that to them but people need to understand India is a diverse country with linguistic differences. Though I disagree on some points, I think the video is brilliant. Most people even the native speakers don’t know they speak Dakhani but this video has attempted to create awareness. Kudos to that 🙌

Dakhni has these 3 main differential dialects,
Most of the non dakhni speakers cannot differentiate between Karnatak dakhni and HYDERABADI,
Karnatak Dakhni which is mostly used in media and was popularised by Late.Mahmood Sahab. Which was his native dialect.

It's so amusing and interesting to see my original language first transformed into Urdu and then into 100+ variants it seems. My caste were rulers of Western UP. Turks record our kings. Khusrau learnt then current version of apbrahmnsa from various Hindus, then with help of them and his own Islamic background, created Urdu. Urdu is turk Mongolian word meaning camp. Hindi spoken in military camps was called Urdu, with liberal sprinkling of Arabic Persian to distinguish Muslims from Hindus. Few thousands of my caste people even converted to Islam, they are still in prominent positions in Muslim societies from Pakistan to India.
I would only request people everywhere to follow their own language but also let others speak their own. Don't make Urdu/Hindi a reason of conflict and differences. Otherwise our South brothers will feel they are being discriminated against.

Dakhni is indigenous. Without the influence of the Dravidian languages, the Dakhni version of Urdu would not have evolved. Dakhni is very south Indian to its core. It's young, but it has evolved from the Dravidian languages and from Arabic languages. It is evolution, it is not invasion. Dakhni got along without forcing itself down people's throats. Hindi must either do the same or be kicked out as much as possible. For eg: 90% of Dakhni speakers also speak at least one of Kannada, Telugu or Tamil. The same can't be said about Hindi speakers in Bangalore. Saying this as a Bengali myself

@@shags91 Any language of Urdu origin is not native to our Dravidian states & I personally don't understand a word of it being a Dravidian speaker myself, this kind of argument can only be made by a Bengali since everything they say is driven by ideology. We don't care if these languages are spoken by Hindus(Hindi) or Muslim(Urdu) for us it's all FOREIGN including your Bengali.

But this is not the case with Dakhni, they r not imposing , who ever want can taste it or leave it.
      It is purely optional
Dechni is not invasive , it is purely influenced , blend and evolved from Dravidian and arabian language.

It is a corruption of Urdu adopted by Dravidian linguistic groups. It is a legacy of the partially successful efforts by the Bahmani Sultanate and its successors - the Deccan Sultanates to Islamize the unique cultural identity of the Deccan region. It is extremely unpleasant to hear and converse in because it sounds like a broken, incomplete language - as if the speaker is trying to converse in Urdu and failing. Just learn and speak proper Urdu at this point. No shame in learning a new language.

Dakhni is older than urdu. Urdu is itself mixture of persian, turki and native languages of the time. It was called rekhta which means mixed.
Marhoom Wali Dakhni sahab died in 1707 and Marhoom Mir Taqi Mirs birth year is 1723.
North has always had this elitist attitude from thousand of years about south.

@@Crimin4L313 I am aware Dakhni is older than Urdu. One of the reason for the collapse of the Bahmani sultanate in the 1490s is due to a civil war between Deccan Muslims (speaking Deccan/Dravidian languages) and Persian and Turkic foreigners whom the Bahmani Sultans patronised and allowed to settle in their territories. The sultans imposed the Persian or Farsi language (the precursor of Urdu) through their courts. This practice continued in the successor states (Adil Shahi, Imad Shahi, Qutb Shahi, Barid Shahi and Nizam Shahi sultanates). Dakhni language evolved through this linguistic mixing of Farsi and Dravidian languages. In the late Mughal times, Dakhni adopted elements of Urdu as well.
