This was the very first band that sparked my interest in symphonic metal when I was a little kid. I don't follow them anymore, nor have I seen them live, but watching the To Mega Therion music video on VHS will forever be etched in my memory.

I never got into Therion's sound, as the other commenter said, they have done some weird things with their music and I guess I have stumbled upon the weirder ones. Otherwise they're an OG of symphonic metal. The song in combination with the video is interesting. My knowledge on Tuonela is restricted to a late 80s translation of The Kalevala, but I recognise some elements, the entity that takes the dead man across the river, the swan woman (who was killed for some reason??). Maybe it's too early in the day for me to understand everything and maybe I should find time to listen to this album. I didn't know Marko had contributed guest vocals for them, but he has over 60 guest features, I think, it's easy to lose track.
Amorphis often has lyrics based on Finnish mythology and the epic poem Kalevala (they literally have an album called Tuonela, from 1999). However , here I was kind of reminded of their 2007 record Silent Waters. It follows the story of a hero, who, at one point, is given the task to kill a swan from the river of the dead. He is killed instead and the title track is basically his mother asking a god and other supernatural entities to help her find him and revive him. But the official video doesn't show any of this.

I assumed you would know all 60 of Marko’s features 🤣. Sounds like a cool story, I’ll have to check it out 🤘

    1. The h isn’t silent
    2. The video is from 2021
    3. The female vocalist is one of Therions lead vocalists, Lori Lewis
    4. Tuonela is the underworld of dead in Finnish mythology
Therion is the first or one of the first symphonic metal bands. I think they could have been a lot more successful if they hadn’t changed their sound around so much and keep the lineup more stable. The only thing that saves them from having a 50-60 person long list of former band members is that a lot of people that recorded and toured with them (some times for years) never became official band members.
This is a good song but not one of their best. Maybe try listening to a couple of albums? I would recommend: Live Gothic (really good live album), Theli, Vovin, Deggial, Lemuria, Leviathan I. You might like the two first albums, “Of Darkness...” and “Beyond Sanctorum”, if you like the older style of Swedish death metal. And then they had an other strange idea: “Les Fleurs du Mal” an entire album with metal cover of French pop songs from 1960s and 1970s. It’s in French, nobody in the band is from France 🤷‍♂. Seems like Nuclear Blast didn’t believe in this album, the project was self published and self financed and the music videos could be worth watching if you like weird videos 🤣.

Thank you for all of the information. I definitely have to check out more by them, if anything just to see the changes in their style. Thank you my friend 🤘

The female vocals are definitely not from Lori Lewis, the singer is Taida Nazraic who is credited on the album cover.

Big Therion fan here. This song, for me, isn't a great one from them. It's an "okay" one. Was pretty much disappointed back then when it came out as a single. Going into the reaction now ;) IMO, wouldn't even made the cut off their earlier albums.

What song would you suggest to a first time listener?
