    This video demonstrates the evidence that mittens over insulated gloves provide greater warmth over entire hand. Great explanation with innovative demo. Applause with warm hands!

    Great comparison. I’ve always thought mittens would be warmer because your fingers could combine their heat rather than each finger relying on its own heat only.

      Absolutely. They are much warmer. It was interesting to actually see the heat loss and surprising to me just how much of a difference a thin shell layer mitten makes.

      @@AdventuresInReach Looks like having two layers with air in between (looser over-mitten) makes a big difference.

    Good to see your infrared analysis. I'd reached a similar conclusion and usually wear liner gloves under a gortex shell - works great. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate!

    Exactly what I needed to see. I was watching a Hestra glove layering video on their site (same advice as yours with layering), but couldn't work out if the thin uninsulated over mitt (shell) was actually worth buying for over my hestra 5 finger gloves or if it was marketing hype. Thanks for the video!

      Glad it was helpful! In cold weather an over mitt is incredibly helpful no matter what you're wearing underneath.

    Gave this a like! So what exactly is the theory behind mittens vs gloves in general ? Is it the fact that the fingers are separate that theyre losing heat or something like that ? Ive never had a single pair of gloves hold up in Ohio weather to artic weather so ive been doing a lot of looking on layers/mitts. Generally i do a wool liner with "windproof" insulated gloves and it works okay for temporary exposure but anything past probably 30 minutes would probably put my hands in the danger zone.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach  2 года назад

      The theory is two fold. First, mittens reduce the surface area that's exposed to the cold (the parts of your fingers that touch other fingers now doesn't have direct contact with an outer later) so your fingers are less like a radiator. Second, it pools the warmth into one space rather than individually heating 5 spaces. Anytime I'm going to be out in very cold weather I at least have a set of over-mitts.

    Thank you for the research and video. What was the "over mitt" with the letter "N" on it that you put on at about 2:15?

      You are referring to the Northern Outfitters wind mitten.

    Now add three finger gloves to the lineup. I’m guessing they would come in somewhere in the middle.

    • @AdventuresInReach
      @AdventuresInReach  6 месяцев назад

      I agree that they would rank in the middle. Many use those for XC skiing so they are warm and still retain some dexterity.
