    Sorry to say mate that when the user turns on their side, the infrared camera is showing the heat that was captured by the SB and mat, and not the temperature of the person inside the SB. I would never use a quilt in really cold situations.

    i have two set ups one has a bag. the others has a wool blanket. both have sleeping pads. and some-kind of “tent”. i am not the type or age to push the weather. i like my 5er. but i try to be comfortable if i must sleep on the ground i am a warm body so i can over heat while asleep. but when i wake up my joints tell me i should be in a warm house. at 65. roughen it is not the same as when i was 15.

    Important difference is that quilt requires more (bigger R value)from the sleeping pad and your warmth depends on it. On really cold winter camping it is a risk I wouldn’t take.

  • @scottgephart9749
    @scottgephart9749 16 дней назад

    Use two straps, both wrapped around the pad. Then, move the clips in away from the edge of the pad (2 to 3 inchesin, from the edges of the pad). That prevents the "quilt killer" issue, and it ensures that the quilt stays wrapped around you better. I’ve found that limits cold drafts the best.

    After a while both lose loft, depending what materials they no longer insulate once wet. Lastly most synthetics melt when exposed to fire. You know what fixes all that? Something we have been using hundreds of years! Wool! For a bit extra weight you get a rugged alternative and as for "It's itchy" never once has my Merino Wool blanket been itchy. Still cold grab two! Roll yourself in them till you're as snug as a bug in a rug!

    As a certified outdoor mountain guide and wilderness, paramedic quilts are dangerous. The problem with them is that and windy or cold weather people rely on them, and they are not nearly as warm, not even close the lower the temperature is the worse that differential becomes. they’re also not roomier or more fun. You just open a sleeping bag you have a quilt Are they lighter? No, they’re not you’re getting less. It’s not that they’re lighter you get less so it’s lighter but not by much very high-quality down is extremely extremely lightweight very misleading video you should redo this honestly redo it. Good intentions, but the road to hell is paved with those

    I'm going to reassert that if you roll over immediately after the mummy bag is compressed (because you were resting on your back) is NOT the time to prove thermal imaging anything. I'm assuming you have no dog in the hunt and are not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes here, but it's still a clumsy failure to address. If you have been resting in a mummy bag on your back and then roll over, keep in mind that material underneath your back has been compressed, and the material now also has your residual body heat there that is not necessarily indicating additional active heat loss. It's like having a cast iron skillet on a stove, letting it heat up nice and hot, and then turning the stove off. That iron is going to retain some heat, and so is the material in the sleeping bag. Obviously we're talking about different heat retention properties and conductivity, but the principle remains the same. But if you were to provide thermal imaging of that skillet, and still see red, you would not presume that the stove is still on. As an additional example, in the Ukraine war there is video of thermal imaging drones that can identify a Russian soldier urinating against a tree, and that urine spot is detectable for up to a half hour afterwards. But that doesn't mean the Russian shoulder is urinating for a half hour. That heat loss represented by the urine deposit is gone and done as far as the Russian soldier is concerned once he does his final shake-off. A mummy bag's back also needs a couple moments to loft up after being compressed because your entire body weight was resting on top of it. Let's see the imaging at minute one or two, or you're going to have some of that residual body heat that's still against the fabric that creates a misleading impression. One you totally ignored. And it takes only a little bit of extrapolating to realize that the moment that losfts up, and the residual body heat that has stained the material has dissipated, you're going to see very comfortable heat retention properties return. The other issue you have not addressed is that with the quilt you have the sad option to do a very sudden retained heat dump. Whereas you might lose some heat at the rate of a slowly deflating balloon with a mummy bag, you can lose almost all of the heat you have retained almost instantly if you raise the quilt too high by accident. Honestly, I don't understand why people are trying to make this argument got a quilt retains more heat than a sleeping bag. Logically a contained mummy bag made of the SAME material as a quilt is going to provide significantly less area for heat to escape, particularly over time, and obviously a quilt will allow you to accidentally lose all of your heat very suddenly in a way a sleeping bag cannot unless you immediately unzip it and open it up on purpose. A quilt's benefit is weight, and comfort, not heat retention. If you don't move much in your sleep, or if you roll over carefully, which is a learned skill with a quilt system, you can have almost as much heat retention as with a comparable mummy bag, enough so that the weight and smaller volume is worth it to you for most of your camping experiences. But let's not kid ourselves: there is a reason you're not very often going to see people climbing Mount Everest using a quilt system. Don't oversell it with misleading physics that fails to control the two most obvious variables: temporary loss of loft due to compression from your back, and residual heat loss on the material that does not necessarily indicate any additional continuing heat loss. Try again and see if you can prove me wrong, but at least then I will be proved wrong with scientific reality and not pseudo-science clumsiness.

    The Enlightened Equipment quilt isn't the best at draft prevention; if this test was done with something like an Outdoor Vitals, or even more so a Katabatic, there would be far less red on the quilt. The Katabatic is nearly as warm as a bag, but its lighter, more versatile, and outright cooler :)

  • @craigbarber3064
    @craigbarber3064 28 дней назад

    Before you know it the whole quilt fad is going to fade away just like the health rider and the Shamwow. A sleeping bag is far warmer and more versatile than a quilt . I can use a sleeping bag as a quilt by draping it over me . I don't get why anyone would want to sleep directly on a pad ? I personally don't like the feel of the materials used on the majority of air pads out there. Plus I don't really enjoy sleeping in all my clothes simply because the quilt isn't capable of sealing itself around my body. I'll stick with a sleeping bag.

    I wonder if when you see the heat pattern for the back side with the sleeping bag, if that's heat that was trapped for some time in the sleeping bag loft as a result of that loft being sandwiched between the emitter (your body) and the insulator (the ground pad. No other sides of your body in the test had this benefit.

    If you buy a quilt with all the extras from UGQ that keep it tight around you and roll inside it rather than rolling the quilt with you creating a draft you notice a REAL difference and no need for a full bag. Mine only goes down to -21f but I’ve never had an issue other than I had mine made to be dual purpose hammock/ground so it does briefly let in a draft at the knee on the ground but it holds so much heat paired with the Xtherm and their Synergy sheet you barely notice once you’ve settled after a roll.
