I was definitely shocked watching this. Thought Oberyn would win and save Tyrion and just when he seems like he’s won boom he gets his head smashed in. Too bad I liked Oberyn.
In the books Oberyn put so much force in his last blow that his spear exploded into Gregor's mail, going all the way through his back. Even the mountain tried to remove it but couldn't. Then he tried to use his longsword to finish him through the visor, but when Gregor grabbed his foot he couldn't find balance and only chipped his helm
This is the perfect example of that saying "You seek revenge then you should dig two graves. One for your enemy and one for yourself." He had the Mountain dead but he had to poke a dying bear.
0:52-0:56 the heavy breathing because he’s so worked up and overcome with his desire for revenge is such a good detail. Phenomenal acting by Pedro Pascal.
An awesome subversion of expectations. We all wanted Oberyn to win and the way they pulled the rug out from under us, at the last minute, was brilliant. An example of excellent writing when the show was at its peak. I know some people think "character I like dying = bad writing," but that's a simple thought by simple people.
I actually fucking hated the way Oberyn dies here. Somebody as agile as he is shown to be wouldn’t fall from having a single foot swept, and, even if he did, would be rolling away from the mountain the instant he hits the ground. I’m an uncoordinated fat fuck, but even I make sure that my shoulders and hips hit the ground first if I slip on some ice and go ass-over-teakettle, and that I stiffen my neck to make sure I don’t crack my head. Maybe I’m really nitpicking, but I would have much preferred the mountain actually grab his ankle, or the opening of his boot, or something.

I think its interesting that they removed the "crowd" as well. In the books the mountain accidently slashes some stable boy then gets annoyed at his screaming and beheads him. But for this fight they have it staged so the crowd is nice and safe in the stands.
That was such a powerful scene, but i liked more in the books where Oberyn puts so much force in his last blow the spear explodes in Gregor's mail and go through his back, then he tries to make him talk with gregors greatsword and that's what gets him too close
No, the world ahs a problem the scene's voices are disturbingly realistic. I Had to watch it a few more times myself to put it to rest in my heart forever.
Not really, the scene is not that well made, they just use camera shifts to mask how underwhelming the choreography actually is. Game of Thrones never had decent swort fight sequences, other than a few exceptions like the fight at Tower of Joy. The Mountain basically swings that sword like he's holding a battle axe. In Game of Thrones, swords are like polearms, characters swing them like clubs and it just looks funy.
3:05 You can see it on Tyrion's expression, "What are you doing? Finish the fight!" He seems so frustrated by Oberyn's lust for revenge, he knew it wasn't necessary and could possibly end horribly.
Minute 2:30 you can see for how long Oberyn was waiting to see this view. He should have ended the battle here and then trash talk everyone. We all miss you buddy.

This was one of the most insane, and uncomfortable scenes I have ever seen and it's just by the sheer way he killed him(I haven't seen the entire show yet... So idk), but it was such an uncomfortable but amazing scene.
I come back to this so much. I love how hes just smiling the first half of the fight, then the music swells to a low ambiance and he becomes completely pissed. One of the scenes i think translated well from the book
I watched every episode of seasons 1-5 back when they premiered on HBO (2011ish?). I was so dialed in and enthralled with this show. It's been almost 10 years since I've watched anything GOT. @@jfjvmdvbdcndkj well had he kept clear he would’ve one. The poison in the spears would’ve went into effect soon enough
@@jfjvmdvbdcndkj He could have easily won the duel, but he didnt want to win the duel; matter of fact, I don't even think he cared if Tyrion died or not. Oberyn was looking for one thing only: a confession, he could've easily stabbed the Mountain in the Heart and got it over with, but he didn't.
He technically did win, the mountain was dead from the first stab bc of the poison.
@@jfjvmdvbdcndkjIt had nothing to do with brute strength, he let his guard down and he payed for it.
I stopped watching at 2:33 as I had to get the door, but really glad that Oberyn won. I hope this resulted in Tywin being exposed.

@@Dracula62526 Yup!
I was definitely shocked watching this. Thought Oberyn would win and save Tyrion and just when he seems like he’s won boom he gets his head smashed in. Too bad I liked Oberyn.
N it was so stupid like he stabbed the mountain so many times
Even in his chest but still he survived
Like it was bullshit
@@thundernation8849 - Oberyn lost. Time to get over it.
@@thundernation8849he probably got stabbed in the lung or something. That is very possible to survive
perfect example of dont be too cocky
In the books Oberyn put so much force in his last blow that his spear exploded into Gregor's mail, going all the way through his back. Even the mountain tried to remove it but couldn't. Then he tried to use his longsword to finish him through the visor, but when Gregor grabbed his foot he couldn't find balance and only chipped his helm
This is the perfect example of that saying "You seek revenge then you should dig two graves. One for your enemy and one for yourself." He had the Mountain dead but he had to poke a dying bear.
Mystikal said it best:
“Whenever you see me fighting a grizzly bear… HELP THE BEAR”
Sudden shocks in is what makes Game of Thrones so unique
0:52-0:56 the heavy breathing because he’s so worked up and overcome with his desire for revenge is such a good detail. Phenomenal acting by Pedro Pascal.
This scene shocked me for sure. When I saw his teeth hit the ground I knew it was over for him.
One punch, all his teeth bro
The actor for Oberyn's wife really sells this with her gut wrenching scream and shaking hands
1. Don't let emotions get to your head in a fight.
2. Never underestimate your opponent. Even when they are on their last legs.
A wounded bear is more dangerous than a content one!
This is what happens when you bring emotions into a fight
"If you are with your troubles when fighting happens... more trouble for you."
Syrio said it, and Oberyn proved it
Lesson in life: always finish what you start before you celebrate
Maybe I’m really nitpicking, but I would have much preferred the mountain actually grab his ankle, or the opening of his boot, or something.
would you say you were okay with how GoT ended as well? Because I feel even tho it was rushed, if we simply look at it as a story being told we have no reason to be dissapointed with it either! wouldn't you agree?
Simple moron calling people simple
Dude, you are a joke
@@ravikkar mountains grip would help the fall, but it is odd that dude fell exactly alongside the mountain so he can be lifted by the throat. But being distracted in his vengeance made him careless and cost him his life.
Calling a ton of people simple for your predictive tendencies of random people watching a series is.... simple of you.
one of the best scenes in the entire series!
One subtle detail I like (and that makes the scene all the more tragic), is that Oberyn thinks the Mountain first defiled Elia, then murdered her, then killed her children. But at the end, the Mountain *corrects* him on the actual order of events.
I looked back and I think he was just saying what he did bcuz oberyn said it in different orders a few times
Actually u right
Not to mention it's the last thing he ever hears. It's haunting, but that's why this is the best scene in any TV show I've ever watched
@@SusPastorFoundBrutallyMurdered he said so many times in the books Gregor was becoming so pissed off that he killed one of the bystanders. That was probably a relief him saying the correct order
It's so much more terrible, I was so shocked I didn't pay attention to that, but the correct order is horrific... 😢
Pedro Pascal actually loved this scene he felt relaxed after the mountains crushed his head and blood flowed in his face
One of the most satisfying scenes ever filmed. Everyone expects David to win. Reality: Goliath wins.
In some ways I thought this scene was better than the scene in the book. I like how they added the line where Oberyn points at Tywin and shouts, “Who gave you the order?”
I think its interesting that they removed the "crowd" as well. In the books the mountain accidently slashes some stable boy then gets annoyed at his screaming and beheads him. But for this fight they have it staged so the crowd is nice and safe in the stands.
I do wish the episode ended with Tyrion throwing up though
The look of disbelief and anger when he sees the Mountain losing was rich.
That was such a powerful scene, but i liked more in the books where Oberyn puts so much force in his last blow the spear explodes in Gregor's mail and go through his back, then he tries to make him talk with gregors greatsword and that's what gets him too close
@@thomasmartin4281he does that enough in the later seasons

No, the world ahs a problem the scene's voices are disturbingly realistic. I Had to watch it a few more times myself to put it to rest in my heart forever.
Lol TV head explosions are satisfying. It's why we all looked this scene up.
Good
He completely humiliated the mountain but his confidence and revenge took over. If he just ended it quick he didn’t have to die such a horrible death
This has got to be one of the best fight scenes in entertainment history.
Entertainment History is a little bit to much. ^^
But still pretty cool.
Cersei's smile after Oberyen was slaughtered is iconic.
Her joy later turned into ashes in her mouth, as Tyrion once said.
Not like the book where she was upset that he confessed to the rape and murders because the Lannisters now had a bad image
Nothing about her is iconic
This was a scene that showcased how revenge blinds, and the ego misleads.

You can see it on Tyrion's expression, "What are you doing? Finish the fight!" He seems so frustrated by Oberyn's lust for revenge, he knew it wasn't necessary and could possibly end horribly.
Minute 2:30 you can see for how long Oberyn was waiting to see this view. He should have ended the battle here and then trash talk everyone. We all miss you buddy.

I love how savage the mountain is in this scene.
2:01 LOL the way Oberyn took a flight to Miami when the Mountain threw him across the arena! 🤣🤣🤣
That smirk on that chick's face was delightful to see before she goes wailing. too funny.
You know you're a great fighter when Jaime is enjoying your fight, what a cool character Oberyn was, such a wasted potential of that character.
For years I didn't like his widow for killing innocent Marcella and was ALMOST sympathetic for Cersei and her revenge ..but watching this scene again having forgotten about Oberin's reason for wanting to take down the Mountain.. it's actually very sad
Oberyn is to blame he knows what the mountain is he could have disabled his arms but he was so caught up with emotions he couldn't think about that anymore
All the plot with Ellaria and the sand snakes in the show is an absurdity... i don't know why they totally changed the Dornish plot.
