Prince Oberyn Martell Vs Mountain Fight Scene - Game of Thrones ( GOT) - Season 4 Episode 8

- "The Mountain and the Viper" is the eighth episode of the fourth season of HBO's fantasy television series Game of Thrones, and the 38th overall. The episode was written by series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and directed by Alex Graves. It aired on June 1, 2014.
In Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 8 during the trial of Tyrion Lannister for the accuse of the murder of King Jofry, He asked for the Trial by combat. Here Prince Oberyn Martell of Drone comes to his aid and agreed to fight for him... There he finds his sister Elia Martell's murderer The Mountain, What happens next you will see in this video....
Everyone except Cersei and Tywin was rooting for Oberyn in this tense duel. The Viper is certainly a skilled fighter (or shall I say dancer, since those moves looked more like ice dancing with a spear) as he dodged and ducked the Mountain for most of the fight. It was quiet a spectacle to watch and the moment Oberyn knocked down Gregor Clegane was one of the most victorious of the season.
Shortly before his trial by combat is to begin, Tyrion discusses his chances with his brother, Jaime. When Tyrion is taken outside, he has a brief conversation with his champion, Oberyn, who is confident. Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane arrives shortly thereafter, and the trial commences. During the fight, Oberyn demands the Mountain admit to raping and murdering his sister, Elia, and her two children. Oberyn lands several skillful attacks on the Mountain, seemingly toying with the much larger man. He knocks the Mountain to the ground and lands a near-fatal blow. Oberyn then screams at the Mountain to confess, hoping the Mountain will admit that it was Tywin who gave the order. As Oberyn circles him, he lets his guard down and the Mountain knocks him to the ground, knocks his teeth out and then gouges out his eyes while confessing to the murder of Elia and her children, and subsequently crushes Oberyn's skull with his hands, killing him. The Mountain then collapses to the ground from his wounds. Tywin rises and sentences Tyrion to death for regicide.

He could've defeated The Mountain, but he couldn't defeat his own desire for revenge. He himself was his worst enemy. RIP dear Oberyn! 🙁
I cannot quite co-sign.
I do not believe you can remove the desire for revenge from the overall endeavor. He was there strictly for this reason.
He didn’t just want the Mountain to die. He wanted him to confess AND name the man behind him.
He simply failed at his overall goal. But his goal WAS revenge with a sprinkle of justice.

@@Mathias_CyriliN tHe BoOkS blah blah blah
He did defeat the mountain as sir Robert strong is a Frankenstein monster. The mountain died
It wasn’t his desire for revenge that got him. Forcing the mountain to experience a slow, painful death was his revenge. He wanted justice, and that meant getting a confession and incriminating Tywin, even though getting that was realistically a long shot.

Very well said.
Perfect summary
This and the red wedding made me really sad.
@@PrincessTrunksBriefs The Red Wedding is brutal, especially because it seemed like everyone had such a good time, the newlyweds are totally besotted with each other and even old Walder Frey and Robb Stark have a somewhat nice moment together. Then there is that heartwarming scene of Robb and Talisa discussing naming their child after Ned, and twenty seconds later they're all brutally murdered.
Well put. You are not alone. I stop watching from the moment he fell down. In my mind I made another scenario where Oberyn fend off mountain and wins the duel.
Tyrion in the background like: "You've got to be f*cking kidding me ..." never ceases to make me laugh 😂💀.
Tyrion: You had one job.
Tyrion the whole time was like: "DUDE, SHUT UP AND KILL THIS GUY!"
It’s okay that he kept monologuing (although he should have just ended it there). What he really shouldn’t have done was get too close while monologuing.
His first misstep was drinking before the fight. No good fighter would do this. His second misstep was expecting a confession from someone who would be killed for giving one anyway. His third misstep was getting too close to the Mountain when he was still alive. And his final misstep was not retaliating after he got tripped. This scene frustrates me for those reasons, since Oberyn was a skilled fighter who was always confident but never so much to the point of being stupid, careless, or over/underestimating himself or his opponent. It just seems it was made for shock value rather than the easily satisfying payoff it could have been. I guess it was necessary for Tyrion to face more adversity and have the audience be taken by surprise, but this fight was a pretentious and heavy-handed way of making that happen.
@@TheWelchProductions The drinking clearly didn't affect him. It was his desire for revenge
@@BigBurg97 Yeah if you drink regularly and are going up against an opponent that is slower than you the reaction time effect loss of drinking would not be too big a deal. However it is still a terrible idea because that little effect could make all the difference. If I was him I would have just stood back and waited for my poison to finish him nothing the mounted said would have stopped tywin and tywin would probly have gotten Oberyn killed shortly after the fight anyway for pointing at him and calling him out the way Oberyn did. In the end Oberyn is still my hero lol just cant believe his woman saw him die like that my Girl was so disturbed by the scene. I went and played my favorite fighting game let myself and my team fall back and start loosing on purpose just so I could Imagin I was in Oberyn's shoes right as he got tripped. @@TheWelchProductions yeah i just like it when the mountain pops his head like a grape and then my face went :o
@@TheWelchProductions it could be argued that his carlessness was due to anger and hatred clouding his judgement. I still do not get how the Mountain survived being impaled like that?
I like this scene in the book because Gregor is getting mad at him the more he says it. He keeps yelling shut up every time Oberyn says those words like he's getting in his head and using that mantra as a distraction.
Ya and he decimates a stable boy who was in the crowd. (There isn’t much an arena in the book)
Also The Mountain obliterated Oberyn’s skull with a single punch
@@pain4perks436I mean even here, Oberyn is clearly concussed from the punch that knocked his teeth out. He was basically unconscious until the pain of the mountain squeezing his skull brought him back.

YEAAH
@@alilweeb7684
Nah, according to Jaime, there are “three men alive in the seven kingdoms who could best him.” This is a sign of Jaime’s ignorance/arrogance, but it’s quite easy to figure out who these three men are with the context we have.
One is Barristan Selmy. Kind of a layup.
I think the other two are the Clegane brothers, as Jaime would’ve been exposed to their strength for the majority of his life, and has an almost shocked look on his face during this fight as Oberyn beats the mountain.
During this fight, Jaime realizes that even when he had his hand he still was quite far from being the best. Fighting Brienne is another part of this character dev for Jaime.
It allows him to separate himself from his sword, and actually have an identity outside of “Kingslayer”
Oops I ranted about Jaime Lannister. But anyway I think it’s important to his character that he ISNT the best knight alive in his prime. He’s just arrogant and believes he is, or that he’s at least close.
@@colekuczek9812you are right to a certain extent, ser jaimie relies on his speed and skill, ser barristan is one knight who could defeat ser jaimie, in the books if I’m not mistaking jaimie jaimie in a way says the hound (may have a chance at beating him), now on to ser Gregor, jaimie relies on his speed and skill, jaimie is much faster than ser Gregor, but just like ser bronn says “one misstep and I’m dead” and that’s all it would take for jaimie one misstep and he’d end up like oberyn, but I think jaimie is well skilled enough to not make that misstep, I think jaimie takes that one, but if it were zombie mountain, jaimie has no chance.
@@colekuczek9812 Jaime was by no means "quite far from being the best" lol, Brienne had to use all of her strength to avoid being killed by Jaime who was shackled, starving, unarmored, imprisoned for 8 months, and had been marching along the King's Road for days.
The ambush in which Robb Stark captured Jaime almost backfired horribly, as when Jaime realized the battle was lost he rallied his personal retinue and cut a path through Robb's army of 6,000 to reach him, nearly killing him if it weren't for 3 of Robb's bodyguards giving their lives to save him, and Jaime's sword getting stuck in one of their necks.
(Brienne remembered her fight with Jaime Lannister in the woods. It had been all that she could do to keep his blade at bay. He was weak from his imprisonment, and chained at the wrists. No knight in the Seven Kingdoms could have stood against him at his full strength, with no chains to hamper him. Jaime had done many wicked things, but the man could fight! His maiming had been monstrously cruel. It was one thing to slay a lion, another to hack his paw off and leave him broken and bewildered. -AFFC, Brienne I)
(Robb looked away into the woods, with the same brooding look that Ned often got. "He … he killed them …"
"Both of them," said Robb. "Torrhen and Eddard. And Daryn Hornwood as well."
"No one can fault Lannister on his courage," Lord Glover said. "When he saw that he was lost, he rallied his retainers and fought his way up the valley, hoping to reach Lord Robb and cut him down. And almost did."
"He mislaid his sword in Eddard Karstark's neck, after he took Torrhen's hand off and split Daryn Hornwood's skull open," Robb said. "All the time he was shouting for me. If they hadn't tried to stop him-"
"-I should then be mourning in place of Lord Karstark," Catelyn said. -AGOT, Catelyn X)

I come here for the head pop 😅
In the books Oberyn put so much force in his last blow that his spear exploded into Gregor's mail, going all the way through his back. Even the mountain tried to remove it but couldn't. Then he tried to use his longsword to finish him through the visor, but when Gregor grabbed his foot he couldn't find balance and only chipped his helm

He was too cocky. He trained specifically to fight the Mountain and it showed. However, at the end of the day, his arrogance was the deciding factor, and it came down to brute strength instead of fighting skill, and Oberyn never stood a chance in that aspect.

LOTR >>>> Song of Ice and Fire
Hell of a way to go, though...
one of the best fight choreographies in movies/series, the whole outcome is really shocking, especially because it conveys empathy about oberyn throughout the fight, avenging his sister and nephews, and beyond the fantasy of a man surviving to so many spears, but oberyn was not interested in the death of the mountain, the ending is surprising and the scream of the wife does not give you time to think about the unreality but about the injustice that poor oberyn could not achieve what he wanted, the confession.
he did confess though...
Bullshit got got a confession nobody gave a fuck tho
He achieved the confession and he did technically get revenge. The mountain was an abomination that couldn’t speak after this. In the books he screamed bloody horror for months as Qyburn experimented on him. He suffered a fate worse then death, and Tywin died to Tyrion after anyways. There’s also a theory that obreyn poisoned Tywin and he was gonna die anyways. In the book he was sick and the symptoms were identical to a poison obreyn had
That confession did still help Oberyn get the last laugh. It was one of those secrets in Westeros that everyone knew he had killed them, very possibly on Tywin's orders, but it was never confirmed. This confession confirmed everything and caused House Lannister to lose a lot of face because of it, so yes, in a way, Oberyn got what he wanted
They should've used the scene from this fight in the books where Gregor misses a slash and hacks off a guy in the crowds arm then to stop him screaming hacks him in 2 and the crowd go running for their life LMAO
This is one of my favorite scenes in the history of everything. I have watched it a hundred times and it still gets my heart pounding just as the first time I watched it.

@@Dracula62526 Yup!
The thing is here - both in the good the bad and the ugly and GOT - Both men *had* to talk. They were not there to fight and win and survive - they were there to take revenge. That means that you want to punish your adversary and maybe even make him feel what you felt in the past. You want to enjoy the ride as you make him suffer. That is why revenge is dangerous.

@@TheWelchProductions most fighters aren't in revenge fights against people that raped and murdered their loved ones. That's a terrible analogy.

Calm down guys. It's all because of what the director told him to do.
This scene shocked me for sure. When I saw his teeth hit the ground I knew it was over for him.
One punch, all his teeth bro
One subtle detail I like (and that makes the scene all the more tragic), is that Oberyn thinks the Mountain first defiled Elia, then murdered her, then killed her children. But at the end, the Mountain *corrects* him on the actual order of events.

An awesome subversion of expectations. We all wanted Oberyn to win and the way they pulled the rug out from under us, at the last minute, was brilliant. An example of excellent writing when the show was at its peak. I know some people think "character I like dying = bad writing," but that's a simple thought by simple people.
I actually fucking hated the way Oberyn dies here. Somebody as agile as he is shown to be wouldn’t fall from having a single foot swept, and, even if he did, would be rolling away from the mountain the instant he hits the ground. I’m an uncoordinated fat fuck, but even I make sure that my shoulders and hips hit the ground first if I slip on some ice and go ass-over-teakettle, and that I stiffen my neck to make sure I don’t crack my head.
Maybe I’m really nitpicking, but I would have much preferred the mountain actually grab his ankle, or the opening of his boot, or something.

In some ways I thought this scene was better than the scene in the book. I like how they added the line where Oberyn points at Tywin and shouts, “Who gave you the order?”
I think its interesting that they removed the "crowd" as well. In the books the mountain accidently slashes some stable boy then gets annoyed at his screaming and beheads him. But for this fight they have it staged so the crowd is nice and safe in the stands.

When subverting expectations is more important than having an interesting story and characters.
I mean, I don't think that's correct either, since the death was specifically what progressed the story, it wasn't just done for shock value, him dying means Tyrion loses and is sentenced to death, meaning he breaks out, murders his father and then flees to join Dany overseas, as well as a number of other things too.
@@nicknamed1267 Instead of Dorne having interesting characters and storylines we kill off a character and entire continent basically for Tyrion to advance his plot.
@muzgash admittedly, the dorne plot was pretty weak in the show, but that's not really because of Oberyns death, as they are still strong components in the book IIRC. And yes, Oberyn died to advance Tyrions' plot, but that's kinda how the story goes, and it did lead to a generally great conclusion most seem to think since that's how Tywin dies.
@ I felt Tyrell and Martell both were only used as plot devices and not really characters/houses in their own right. They amount to nothing. You could even say the same about Greyjoys but that's basically admitting that GRRMartin is a terrible worldbuilder in general. The last book I read was A Feast for Crows and called it quits after that, so I may be missing out on something from A Dance with Dragons.
@muzgash eh, I personally liked them, but I can see your point too. May be to each their own there.
This scene always gives me devil coctail of human feelings and leaves an insanely painful sediment in my heart. Fear, grief, gross and disillusionmentat killing from the inside
wow I'm impressed by your depth of emotion, as well as the style of your poetic writing... I kind of feel the same way... Way worse is the ending. I am deeply on Daenerys side.
I like how many scenes and things that happen in this show teaches you something about life.

This scene was truly an eye opener
For Oberyn it was hard to watch. ^^
Thanks. This changed the show in so many ways.
You know you're a great fighter when Jaime is enjoying your fight, what a cool character Oberyn was, such a wasted potential of that character.
I kept screaming "END IT YOU FOOL" the moment he gloats and let his emotions gets the better of him.

I love how savage the mountain is in this scene.

Minute 2:30 you can see for how long Oberyn was waiting to see this view. He should have ended the battle here and then trash talk everyone. We all miss you buddy.
The mandalorian: `` And that's why I always wear my helmet "
3:22 You can kind of see his face deforming as his skull gets crushed. Really brutal scene.
It wasn’t deforming. That was just his reaction to the pain. That was the actor’s real face.
@@TheWelchProductions the actor didn't die, they used a doble
@@TheWelchProductionsahaha 🤣😆
@@TheWelchProductions you’re right. They stuck thumbs in the actor’s eye sockets.
Incredible commitment to “method”.
@@westmcgee9320At 3:32, that was a dummy. The rest was really Pedro, with some special effects.
You have got to walk away from the blackjack table once you have won.
0:19 even Tywin was impressed by that performance.
This was a magnificent fight, great acting and top writing.
My man Oberyn! I loved his character so much, and Pedro Pascal's portrayal was *muah* Chef's Kiss! Perfect
Bronn described the entire fight scenario to Tyrion when he came to meet Tyrion in the cell.
If you slow it down you can tell he’s right handed. Big advantage.
Ever rewatched something, and hoped it would end differently? Yeah.

That smirk on that chick's face was delightful to see before she goes wailing. too funny.
I like how out of everyone from the small council and royal family, Mace Tyrell is the only one that applauses after Oberyn shows off his skills before the fight starts. Mace Tyrell was just vibing off every minute of his life. He deserved a happy ending unlike getting blown to death.
This is so ironic because Mace absolutely hates Oberyn. He was responsible for crippling his son in a tournament. And although Oberyn and his son are on good terms, they exchange letters every few months, Mace think it was all his fault even though it was his. He was too young to be in tourneys and too inexperienced in riding a horse.
If you played a drinking game where you took a shot everytime they had a cut, you'd die within 30 seconds
2:01 LOL the way Oberyn took a flight to Miami when the Mountain threw him across the arena! 🤣🤣🤣
2:35 the Mountains admitted his crimes, Oberyn wins, saves Tirion and returned safe to Dorne and they lived happily ever after
Fun fact : this is actually a real footage of a man getting his head smashed.
This scene wasn't scripted, but The Moutain actor did it so well that they decided to keep the shot.
RIP: Pedro Pascal; what a legend.
Is getting old
Because of this, i couldn't sleep for 3 days.
For years I didn't like his widow for killing innocent Marcella and was ALMOST sympathetic for Cersei and her revenge ..but watching this scene again having forgotten about Oberin's reason for wanting to take down the Mountain.. it's actually very sad
Oberyn is to blame he knows what the mountain is he could have disabled his arms but he was so caught up with emotions he couldn't think about that anymore
All the plot with Ellaria and the sand snakes in the show is an absurdity... i don't know why they totally changed the Dornish plot.
@@shin29534writers are to blame. They control what the characters do.
Even after getting tripped by the mountain at the end he should have still been able to escape. Really makes no sense how he died
I’m still sad he died. He was such a good character. But it made it so much more real he died
Jamie grinning at Oberyn's skill will never get old...
Il never forget the first time I witnessed this scene lol. Early seasons of got were top tier writing, just goat goat tier.
After 4 seasons of thinking you finally get how deaths work in this show and not getting too attached only to have this shit happen. Still pisses me off 😂
