      well, Clegane was unarmed and they were Kingsguards. Gregor's big and strong but he's explicitly stated as not particularly skilful. Plus, without a helmet they could've killed him immediately if they wanted.

    • @Fishfingers232
      @Fishfingers232 9 лет назад +232

      Robert R Even Bronn was scared of him, probably only Jaime Lannister with his hand or a young Ser Barristan would be a match for him.

    • @Robert399
      @Robert399 9 лет назад +241

      Fishfingers232 Well Bronn is clever and fairly skilful but he's no legendary fighter. Gregor isn't that skilful, he's big and strong and intimidating. Against an average-sized person that's a huge advantage but it get significantly less so as the opponent gets bigger. Sandor is big enough himself that Gregor's extra size isn't that much of an advantage, while Sandor is far more skilful than Gregor (he's known as one of the best swordsmen in Westeros)

    • @ResolvedTwo
      @ResolvedTwo 8 лет назад +162

      +Gist432 He has really good instincts too, even Tyrion notices this as he positions himself against the sun when fighting Oberyn, But yeah its his strength and height (he's supposed to be around 8 feet tall) as well as the fear factor which makes him so good primarily.

    • @Gist432
      @Gist432 8 лет назад +58

      ResolvedTwo Don't get me wrong, I would never underestimate such an opponent (I am also large and strong, but have no real fighting skill).. little does it matter though as there are few who even challenge me. The ones who do are intoxicated somehow, and they make easy prey. Would I ever meet a skilled (and sober) fighter though, I would get put down easily. Then again, I would never have a problem with such a character in the first place... damn, I digress.

If the mountain went to trial and then won in a trial by combat, and then committed another crime and went to trial again, would he be able to do another trial by combat? As a knight of a hold-fast, Gregor could have killed Ser Loras -- then? In response to any accusation of murder, he has the right to demand Trial by Combat, which cannot be denied. It's why Knighthood is often sought out by Small-folk whom cannot afford arms-and-armor. Otherwise, if they're accused of a crime -- a Lord can often have them executed without so much as a trial or right to defend themselves against a dozen guards.

    Fun fact: in real world tournaments the horse of the rider could often be a part of the wager, so sometimes the loser of the joust would deliberately lame the horse out of spite before handing it over to the winner. Killing the horse however could result in endettenment, time in the jail, time in the stockades, loss of holdings (if they had any), or worst of all having their knighthood revoked (more common a possibility in absolute monarchies where an attending king could do it on the spot if they we're offended enough.)

    I think it's worth saying how highly Jaime thought of Loras.
    Jaime at this point was considered one of the greatest living swordsmen, with perhaps only Barristan Selmy being his equal.
    And Jaime thought Loras had the potential to be just as good as he was.
    "He's me, Jaime realized suddenly. I am speaking to myself, as I was, all cocksure arrogance and empty chivalry."
    "If I must go, Ser Loras will command here in my stead."
    Jaime and Loras were the first Kingsguard since Robert's Rebellion to form a real brotherhood. Loras volunteered to cover Jaime's vigil so he could rest. Jaime respected Loras' skill and feelings for Renly. Jaime genuinely became something of a mentor to Loras. Jaime stops Loras from taking revenge on Brienne for Renly's murder, and convinces him to talk to her, trusting in his wisdom to see the truth through his grief.
    It's an interesting relationship to watch bloom in the books, one I'm sad we didn't see more of in the show (some of my fav parts of the book are Jaime acting as Lord Commander), and one I hope to see more of in the books if George EVER FINISHES THEM!

    This was my favorite Gregor Clegane actor. Looks older and taller than Sandor, and ruthlessly belligerent-scary as fuck. 2nd Gregor looked calmer and more level-headed than Sandor, and last Gregor looked much shorter and younger than Sandor.

      As I understand it - The Hound was sent to fetch the kid. If he hadn't run - he wouldn't have been ridden down. The kid was stupid. If you can't get where the horse can't go - trying to run from a man on a horse is just stupid. The Hound didn't have patience with stupidity, especially when it cost him extra effort. He sure wasn't going to get off his horse and chase the little shit around. Also - he might not have killed the kid by riding him down - but he did.
      Arya was all upset about the unfairness of it all but unfairness was something The Hound was used to.

    • @willmarsden7657

      Years before this, at a Tourney at Harrenhall, Rhaegar Targaryen (pretty boy like Ser Loras) gave a winter rose (like the white rose here) to Lyana Stark (like Sansa here).
      Basically, it was the catalyst for Roberts Rebellion, which claimed Ned's dad (killed by the King for 'treason') and older brother Brandon (who tried saving his dad), and Lyana got kidnapped/left.
      ... and what happened in this series?
      Ned killed (by the King for 'treason'), Robb killed (trying to save his dad), Arya gets kidnapped.
      [Quite vague connection, but history looks to be repeating slightly].
