As someone myself who drives a farm tractor for a living i found this tribute thru the farms and fields of Scottland with the tractors lined up in respect to her to be among the most moving things i've ever seen in my life. She was so loved in her own country and around the world. One can only hope that political leaders around the globe can take from this a lesson as to what they COULD be.
I also loved when they drow by a big pasture of cows, the cows was standing along the fence facing the road where the cortege drow by and it was like the cows where saying a final goodbye. It somehow made me think of when she was at some sort of livestock exhibition and cows entered and you could see her saying cows and smiled happily.
Maj herself, people mostly respected and admired, though Scotland is not so dewy-eyed or amnesiac about the tough old trout as England is. In fact the idea of monarchy in principle is not very popular in Scotland in general. And the surviving Windsor iteration is not much respected. This is why they have made such a huge TV show out of the proclamations of Charles as king.
Scotland isn’t really the kind of place where people would protest a funeral. There’s bereaved people in the cortège. People who think this is an overblown, ridiculous performance designed to play on mawkishness to milk political support for the monarchy and unionism just stayed away. In Edinburgh, I noticed that for a Sunday afternoon in tourist season there was about the number of people around that you would expect - with nowhere to go and nothing else to go, since all the shops and pubs were shut. I think you may see the difference in flagwaving and so on down in England. Maybe they can muster something “spontaneous” with union flags on the drive south to the border.
Even though I belong to India, it's impossible not to be affected by the gravity of this intensely mournful occasion. For 70 long years, the Queen reigned with a quiet dignity, upholding the majesty of her position while both her nation as well as the Royal Family went through numerous momentous upheavals in quick succession. But she faced all the ups and downs with a resolute calmness and an unflinching constancy of spirit that we rarely see in any of today's leaders. I believe that for many people like me, cutting across the divisions of nationality, race, culture or class, the Queen had become akin to a fact of nature- an immutable image of placidity. We all knew this moment would come sooner or later, but I think no one was prepared to deal with the shock of it, even though we thought we could. So embedded had she become in our hearts.
Well said, Abhishek Rath 😊 I'm feeling much the same as I did when Princess Diana died.
