It's wild to me just how much of the N64's success was hinging on the 64DD; how many of the console's games, both released and cancelled, were originally planned for the add-on, which Nintendo then proceeded to neglect and barely release. What a poorly-handled mess all-around.
hello i am the Doctor of the person whose youtube account this is and I need to tell you some very sad news, the youtube account holder died from alcohol poisoning because of ur comment so I hope you feel bad bye
Imagine what could have been if a) the 64dd would have released much earlier and cheaper so most N64 owners had the dd as well, or b) the 64dd was never in development to begin with so all the effort on it and it's planned games were not wasted because they were never started. All those games could have been made for the N64 to begin with and actually finished!
PS1 managed to do it. There are so many great RPGs on the system, too many to list. I remember a rumor that someone at Nintendo said that "RPGs were boring", mainly in response to losing Square as a major developer for its consoles. I think it was just an attempt to save face.
Super Mario RPG 2 was actually reworked into Paper Mario as there is a tittle screen showing it being called Super Mario RPG 2. There is also a test room that has the text Mario RPG on the floor.
Translation of the german news article to Desert Island: "Super Real Island didn't sunk yet though it got very quiet around the Imagineer game. The game is now called Desert Island and leaves the player on a lonely island. In order to survive you have to harvest and breed animals. With time passing by your environment changes to your advantage and disadvantage for example with the appearing of wild predators. The game comes in 3D and shares similarities with titles like Sim-City and Populous. Work on the game has just begun (with 20% done) and it is scheduled to launch in 1999 for the 64DD."
Can't believe I've missed this channel over the years! Been a huge fan of DYKG but didn't hear much about this second channel and I'm glad you released the update recently, now I have HOURS of videos to enjoy. I also love the choice of (mostly Rare) soundtracks in these videos! Bravo!
There's not enough coverage about cancelled games out there. There are too many full games being lost to time, and information on games that never could make it are getting completely erased. Great job cataloguing so much
Still hurts my hear that Contra Spirits 64 was cancelled for the Nintendo 64. I first heard about the game in a 1997 issue of NEXT GEN MAGAZINE. What a great magazine that was besides Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM).
To know that the company that made Body Harvest became Rockstar North is fascinating. I honestly wish they'd made a sequel, or a remake of it. The game was a fever dream, but yet it was so enticing as a game. I'd say it was much more innovative than most games at the time
You should probably change the name of this channel. I mean, clips aren't really uploaded on this channel anymore (I still love these hour long videos tho)
Would've liked to see a possible sequel to Mission Impossible there were elements in that game which were rather unique. Also, nice touch leaving the CIA Rooftop track from the game playing in the background at 34:37. The soundtrack was killer
I feel as though I remember playing something similar to the Ceasers palace, but the name seriously sticks out to me as maybe what I played. some sort of demo or something maybe? This was back here in the UK where pirated cds of n64 games to play on the Dr64 were super common
Anyone know the music used around the 20 minute mark? Around the quest 64 mark. Sounds like Mario rpg or Paper Mario but I just can't put my finger on it.
carts were expensive to order and you had to guess the right amount as the publisher or you would be left holding thousands of unsellable carts (ala glover). publishers were weary of the n64, hence why so many mediocre n64 games never found a publisher. ps1 was more profitable, and also had a lot more shovelware by extension, but it was easier to get a publisher on board for an only okay ps1 game.
When I was a kid game droughts weren't even felt because we had no money to buy any games at all so for all I knew there were dozens of great games released every day
Possibly the game I would personally be most interested in playing would be that Pokemon RPG. That Young Olympians game sounds like it would have also been interesting.
Where is a SimpleFlips? And can you also do all of the entire Cancelled Wii U Games with Scott The Woz and oh yes Remix just for maybe like only for on someday please?
Yo @DidYouKnowGaming2, I got an update for 25:51, some time ago I found more concept art for it and recently a channel by the name "Robin's rayman stuff" found more footage from E3 1998. I've compiled all of it into a video.
As much as I enjoy pikmin, I really would have liked if mario 128 wasn't turned into it. You can just tell they had so much planned for it, but we saw none of that because of so many development issues.
I think my Father would have enjoyed playing SM64 if there was a version for 2 players as he was the one who shared that adventure with me when i first got my N64 Back in 1997
That's a real shame about the N64 Chrono Trigger remake, it looked really good for fan work, especially limited to 64 specs. Hope they got to go on to something equally cool for them.
Mario Artist: Polygon Studio (?) (N64DD). For sure, it is one of the Mario Artist N64DD games. I had the game. As I recall, the game offers toy-like objects, and you can explore a blocky but HUGE world (like a debug room I guess but interesting). In that debug world, as I recall, you hit a spinning sprite which provides you with parts (ex. wheels, jets, motor) to upgrade your toy-like object. The more you upgrade, the more of the world you can explore...very cool. I about sh*t myself when I found a floating maze way high in the sky. I had no idea it was there.
64DD was responsible for so many cancelled games that we should start calling it the Nintendo 64 Development Destroyer (N64DD).
🤣
thing is so rare now
It was really hard to develop games for as most development studios were use to making 2d games before the 64 had launched
Bro had to explain the joke 💀
Forget the virtual boy or the wii I...this was Nintendo's biggest blunder

Nintendo is.. Lucky, let's say
Rare kept them alive and made the 64 the legend that it was
they needed the n64dd to be sold at a minimum bar of 3.5 M units, even that, it just starting to be profitable at this number !
Rare's output during the n64 was mediocre and had very little innovation.
@@danieljimenez1989 lol nice try, troll.
Take a shot everytime a game was canceled because of the 64DD
Only play this if you're suicidal
I’m assuming he meant alcohol, but either would probably kill you
Bruh you trying to kill people with that idea? Lmao
hello i am the Doctor of the person whose youtube account this is and I need to tell you some very sad news, the youtube account holder died from alcohol poisoning because of ur comment so I hope you feel bad bye
RIP
I love these videos I can put them on while I'm working
I do that too
Floppy The Disk sameeee
that's exactly what i'm doing lol
Absolutely the best to listen to while at work!
Same
I love how hard Koji Kondo rocked the N64 audio under those hardware restrictions.
Alternate title: One Hour's Worth of Depression
So an hour of my life
I wish you knew how much I appreciate videos like these that I can just listen to while being useless
It's a shame there were so few RPGs on the system. They could have worked if they just left out the FMVs that were so popular back then.
PS1 managed to do it. There are so many great RPGs on the system, too many to list. I remember a rumor that someone at Nintendo said that "RPGs were boring", mainly in response to losing Square as a major developer for its consoles. I think it was just an attempt to save face.

I just love the Nintendo 64, such a treasure in the gaming industry!
64 to Dreamcast... ah yes, the glory days!
Love falling asleep to these videos.

Already got me nostalgic by playing the file select theme in the beginning.
There's not enough coverage about cancelled games out there. There are too many full games being lost to time, and information on games that never could make it are getting completely erased. Great job cataloguing so much
This is an extremely specific topic for an hour-long compilation
@Boco Corwin yo I haven't heard topnotch trucks In so long!! Loved reading it
A company named "super happy fun fun" and we're all just gonna pretend that's normal?
RIP Nintendo World, it was the best gaming magazine we have here in Brazil, and it was printed until the early Switch days
17:00 wow so I'm not the only one who remembers the promises made around the Robotech N64 game
Still hurts my hear that Contra Spirits 64 was cancelled for the Nintendo 64. I first heard about the game in a 1997 issue of NEXT GEN MAGAZINE. What a great magazine that was besides Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM).
10:47 the game shown is Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber. Vastly underrated quasi real time strategy game
I really like that game back in the day!
Yesssss perfect for my lunch hour!!!
have a nice lunch 🥗 🥙 🍴
Memories of lunch long since eaten.
52:48 missed opportunity, could've said "Bottom Up went bottom up"
EA: Buys studios just to close them.
Nintendo: Ask studios to develop games that they won't publish and bankrupt them. 👍
Crazy how the celebrity that was gonna work with Nintendo was actually Kanye West.
Underrated comment
Appreciate the quality content that you all work hard to put out!!
They really got to bring the 64DD games on the switch virtual console.

I watch these videos and I just can’t help but think “man these characters would be cool in Smash”
Did you know? Over 100 games for the N64 never saw the light of day.
BUT FIRST, we need to talk about Parallel Universes.
That Mario 64 menu music gives me nostalgia chills
I So wish we had Doshin the Giant in the NSO service.
These cancelled games videos are definitely some of my favorite videos you guys have ever made
These videos are the best ! Thank you ! I can’t get enough 😍
Is that opening song from Super Mario 64? it sounds so familiar but I can't quite place it...
if this was 1 month ago and the gigaleak was in july, why isnt the actual luigi beta model in the thumbnail? cause its a legit luigi
Gotta love these 1 hour clips lol
You should probably change the name of this channel. I mean, clips aren't really uploaded on this channel anymore
(I still love these hour long videos tho)
I mean, they're still clips, just hour long compilations
What should they change it to then lmao
That disc drive sounded like it could have been cool. It's always a gamble though, isn't it
Would've liked to see a possible sequel to Mission Impossible there were elements in that game which were rather unique. Also, nice touch leaving the CIA Rooftop track from the game playing in the background at 34:37. The soundtrack was killer
0:35 the camera turns counter-clockwise instead of clockwise :0
I love these 1 hours
Listening to this while playing mario 64 on my switch, very nice 👌
the amount of ambition nintendo has blows my mind
I slept to these videos last night
6:47
Hey that's their company logo from body harvest one of my favorite N64 titles 😊
7:41
Still turned out to be fun, especially when the aliens mutate
Lethal encounter would have been a great addition to the n64.Turok and starfox gameplay sounded interesting.
Man that Famicom wars GBC connection would have been amazing
I love finishing online school to have one of these vids in my Notifications.

these video are a god send when your drunk and grinding out a game
I wonder how many potentially successful franchises simply died on the vine during the N64’s lifespan
These videos are epic
Epic
Yes
Maybe Luigi was going to playable in super mario 64 2 before no one knew that lt was real
Can you do Cancelled Wii U Games with Scott The Woz and even Remix just for only someday please?
i love how he keeps using ogre battle footage lmfao
Good call on the rules, shame though about Dinosaur Planet. I got to experience that at E3 2000 and what a loss.
wow
The list of canceled games is amazing but I would have loved to see mario 64 2 or bajo threeie or to know really what happened with them
Anyone know the music used around the 20 minute mark? Around the quest 64 mark. Sounds like Mario rpg or Paper Mario but I just can't put my finger on it.

Love this, this GOLD. I loved my N64, but the game droughts where horrible. Still got 3 of the best 10 games ever IMO. Mario64 has held up amAZINGLY.
When I was a kid game droughts weren't even felt because we had no money to buy any games at all so for all I knew there were dozens of great games released every day
wow I think the last baseball game i played was on nes in 1990!
Possibly the game I would personally be most interested in playing would be that Pokemon RPG. That Young Olympians game sounds like it would have also been interesting.
Looking Glass just can't get a break, can they?
Man I can't wait to check stocks on Wall Street DD once the N64DD releases in America!
Where is a SimpleFlips? And can you also do all of the entire Cancelled Wii U Games with Scott The Woz and oh yes Remix just for maybe like only for on someday please?

I like to think the Mario ideas ended up in subsequent Mario games. That's what we do. Any idea we don't ship in one game ends up in another.
I think my Father would have enjoyed playing SM64 if there was a version for 2 players as he was the one who shared that adventure with me when i first got my N64 Back in 1997
more of these please :)
Love this beat
Man if they were gonna put this much effort into a CD add on why not just build it into the fucking console
Wasn't "Lethal Encounter" Aerofighters 64? They look really, really similar.
In a way I’m glad a mario 64 sequel was not made I just think it was such a iconic 3D Platformer that a sequel would have ruined it
@matt fahringer thinking about it yes we did
21:30 sounds like paper mario music... hmmm sounds familiar
Mana from sky _and_ air?! What a concept! How could the game have been cancelled?!
A name like Pokémon DD implies that it was coming out for the Nintendo 64 DD. It probably wouldn't have gotten a US release.
That's a real shame about the N64 Chrono Trigger remake, it looked really good for fan work, especially limited to 64 specs. Hope they got to go on to something equally cool for them.
Crazy how nostalgia the opening music is........awwww simpler times
N64 is easily top 5 as far as consoles go! Absolutely love mine.
is Flights of the U.N related to U.N Squadron? Area 88
Anyone know the song at 3:34?
sometimes I leave these playing in the background until I think… why am i watching this?
So many games fell victim to the 64DD failing :(
wow. I did not realize I was listening for more than 2 hrs now.
DD Mario 64 2 is something i wish i could have see
Just a re-released video from before. Like not even a compilation
Yeah I feel like I've seen all these clips.
Also matt, very original 🙄
Exactly. I watched this exact video, months ago
Nintendo made Dreams first but way too ambitious for the time
Catroots sounds like " Itchy and Scratchy ".
"and then devoted their resources to Superman 64" OH NYO
I wonder if Nintendo persevere in their archives the N64 Earthbound demo
I wish the Golgo 13 game was released I really liked the movies
THE GAME AT 42:45, WHAT IS THE NAME. I played it as a kid and I adored it but I cannot for the life of me remember the title!!
Mischief Makers
@@Nate-ll4do Thank you!

crazy that there never was a SMB64 2 was made
Corridor games are by far the best genre
This is the earliest I'll ever be. But great timing as I can listen while I take a shower.
I love hot dogs.
