NMB has something that largely misses from Dream Theater and that is being melodic AND techny at the same time! I'm pretty sure Petrucci can play whatever Gilette plays but Eric tends to be the more interesting musician to my ears. And don't let me start on vocals, LaBrie sucks for the past 20 years at least while Morse sounds exactly the same as in the Spock's Beard days and Eric is even better. I am very biased about the keyboards because I don't like them in DT at all and Neal Morse is one of my favourites of all time, along with Bill Hubauer!
