Dream Theater - The Necromancer (Rush Cover) - Jones Beach NY - July 11th 2003

- Through all my years in Dream Theater, as the Setlist writer in the band I would always throw in occasional one-off Rush Covers into the setlists...
It was a tradition every time we played in Toronto as I threw in “Jacobs Ladder”, “A Passage to Bangkok” and “The Camera Eye” throughout the years at our Toronto shows. We also covered “Different Strings”, “Tears”, "2112: Grand Finale" and excerpts of “Working Man”, “By Tor and The Snow Dog”, “The Analog Kid” and “La Villa Strangiato” through the years as well...
But there was one evening in the summer of 2003 when we were playing at the Jones Beach Amphitheater in New York, that I decided to throw in a real deep Rush gemstone to the completely unsuspecting audience...and later that Christmas, I posted a video from my archives to share it with everybody as a Holiday gift.
I think with Neil’s passing it seems like a timely time to re-share this DT rarity from my archives as a tribute to our biggest influences and our fallen hero...here is DT’s 2003 rendition of Rush’s 1975 classic deep cut: The Necromancer
In a world where most people know Rush for Tom Sawyer, this was a ballsy choice to play. Only a true Rush fiend can register this song mentally and emotionally. And only DT could have done this. Thanks for the post. RIP Neil Peart. Safe journey to Cygnus X-1
I think the members of rush were in their early 20’s when they wrote this song. Think someone in today’s music industry can write and play something of this caliber in their 30’s let alone 20’s?????
Necromancer from Caress of Steel. Dream Theater’s inspiration
Well said!
Well said and of course most Dream Theater fans are true Rush fans
1 of my all time favorite Rush tunes,so F’ing trippy🤟🏻🎼🎼🤟🏻
Caress of Steel is such a good album, such epics!
It almost cost Rush their careers.
Heavy Prog
My favorite Rush album! Good thing at 14, when it came out, I had no idea of it’s critical reception, and didn’t care. A band I was trying out for on drums asked me to learn Bastille day. First I ever heard of Rush. It changed my life.
@@irishguy13 luckily, they didn't back down, and hit their next Prog Epic out of the park.
I think it's still the best album they put out! Shame that the "critics" didn't like it!
Leave it to Dream Theater to tribute RUSH while adding in Yes and The Who, two bands who influenced Rush themselves! I've always loved this cover very much! Thanks again for sharing it, Mike!
May Neil rest in peace! 🥁
What a friggin awesome medley.
I thought I caught a snippit of "Heart of the Sunrise"...:O Thx for confirming!
What was the Who song?
@@maximummatt73 Baba o riley
Any top 40 songs of most artists are not their best songs,If you truly Love the group, you know better.Great job Dream Theater
Caress of Steel is a classic underrated. Thanks, Mike. Neil Peart keep alive yet in his music.
It was before it's time.
I've been crying for 4 days. Neil was my hero, the reason I became a musician. And Dream Theater is my 2nd favorite band. This video is so good. Thanks Mike.
@Drederick Tatum Some people feel emotions differently hey. Especially when someone has had that big an impact on them.
@Drederick Tatum Don't get bursitis from patting yourself on the back. I'm sure he did other things in those 4 days, but maybe having some grief and not being ashamed of it isn't such a bad thing.
@@cars10w49 I wish Dream Theater would come to South Africa just once so I could see the band that changed my musical influence forever just once xD To see them in the Images and Words tour must have been amazing wow
@Drederick Tatum portnoy himself said he cried. Many did. That's what being in touch with your emotions is like.
Me too dude, you're not alone. Im not handling this very easily.
It seems like Caress of Steel is largely overlooked, but it got a lot of time on my turntable when I was young. In my opinion, this record more than any other is when we saw the true first signs of Neil's lyrical genius and the progressive greatness of Rush. Thank you for sharing, Mike. Rest in peace, Neil.
Yeah man,I like it FAR more than 2112.. always have.
I deff prefer it over other Rush albums people overrate. It's more complete of songs I enjoy than Motion Picture for example.
After many years of wrestling with what is the best Rush album, I've landed on Caress as my favorite.
not surprising really, it WAS Neil's 1st Rush album!
@@ThePrion23 Fly by Night .
I love his playing. However, I will miss his philosophical perception of music. His ideology of the art form and his view of musical history was zen. So inspirational. I’ll miss you, Neil.
Dream Theater, Rush and Who what terrific blend! Outstanding tribute to Neil !
a little nod to Yes just after the 8 minute mark
(Heart of the Sunrise)
Chris Squire and Neil Peart
together at last
covers within covers- nested covers if you will. the who at the end too
The perfect duo...
I’ve been a Rush and Yes fan for 45 years. I have seen both bands a few times. Once in 2010 after a Yes show @ Warner Theatre in DC I met Chris Squire. He was very nice and tall like me. (6’4”)
This was such a huge loss for the rock and metal community. RIP Neil 😥
In my 56years of existence, I haven’t seen ANY other artist thats has shocked so many, and so many artist that paid tribute to. Makes me an even prouder Canadian to know he has influenced millions, and touched so many people.
That’s where Peruvian Skies came from
hahahahahhaha this is the comment i was looking for.
Gabriele Pirovano just thinking the same thing even with the effects, rush probably borrowed a bit from pink Floyd as well
Daniel Wilson The Necromancer is easily the most floydy rush song I’ve heard.
I've always thought that "Peruvian skies" "inspired " by "enter sandman". Hell, b4 I knew that JP plays a baritone guitar, I tuned my 6 string ESP 2 enter sandman and tried 2 figure out Peruvian skies. No luck.Obviously.
I get the feeling you lot don't know Caress Of Steel, Fragile and Who's Next.
This is the cover you never thought you'd hear and never knew that you needed.
We should help us to find such beaties!
8:06 love the heart of the sunrise lick
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, wonderful song as well!
YES!
Seemless!!!
Never thought I would see a cover of Necromancer, much less from DT, BRAVO!.........Good job Portnoy, long live the memory of Neil Peart, the world lost a master, RIP.
Neil and Mike, the two that inspired me to pick up the sticks. Thanks so much for the share. May we continue to carry the flame he lit in so many.
I found out last Friday , that Mr.Peart passed away. I was at a friend's shop. Sitting there & my friend Lenny says , Neil Peart died.
My reaction was , WAIT , WHAT ☹️. I looked over at the computer screen. My day went from good to complete sadness. First time I seen Rush was 1984 , then in 1991 / 92. Primus was opening.
Went both nights. Then my last time seeing Rush was 2002.
Neil Peart gone ☹️ it's going to take a while. Though I'll never get use to it. Mr.Peart really left a big impact on my life.
Probably one of the best Rush covers I’ve ever heard. Petrucci’s solo near the end, Portnoy’s Peart-inspired drum-playing, and much more really add a whole other dimension to this Rush epic. I know it would do Neil proud. RIP Professor 1952-2020
Eric Scardino 😑 meh.
Agreed.
Meh.
Kevin Gallagher Frodo Baggins That’s all right. I hear it one way, you hear it another, and that’s all good. Hope you guys at least enjoyed it in some way
Verdade .

I love you for loving my favorite band in all of my history. Thank you for being.
Wow. Never heard of a band covering this before! Such a deep cut and an underrated song from their catalogue.
Caress is my 3rd fav Rush album.
1. Hemispheres, 2. Permanent Waves, 3. Caress of Steel
Absolutely stunning cover of a lost classic.
It's not lost
Def my favorite song from Caress of Steel and in my top 10 for rush songs
This and 2112 are my two absolute favorite RUSH songs ! A great cover and tribute to the late and greatest rock drummer to ever sit behind a kit. RIP Neil Peart. I think Neil would be proud.
👏👏👏😔
Obrigado Portnoy
Obrigado Neil "The Professor " Peart.
Sempre estão/estarão em nossos ritmos e corações.
Brasil sempre acompanhando o portina 🤘🇧🇷
The best 12 minutes of my day. Gave me chills.
Damn, that Heart of the Sunrise riff!
RIP, Neil Peart! One of the best Drummers of all time!
am i the only one thinking at 8:05 it sounds the exact same as the ending of Heart of the Sunrise by Yes? that made this cover even more badass
Joey Burgio you are correct
Definitely
I'd LOVE to hear JP wailing on Strangiato, 1 of my favorite rush songs. It's like rush's own version of "erotomania" instrumental heaven!
So glad this song is recognized...by someone besides me...
Caress was their best album. It was a huge step outside of their normal motief and it came out beautifully. It's a shame many people don't like it.
Obrigado Mike, obrigado!
Incredible.. 4 years later. Glad I stumbled onto this.
I was there, this was the first concert I'd ever been to. Look third row center I'm the 13year old nerd with the glasses. (Aren't all us dream theater fans nerds with glasses?)
Dude that is too funny!!
No just you!!!!😂
Not all of us wear glasses
I'm a nerd but I don't wear glasses, LOL.
im supposed to but i dont really wear them lol
Thanks Mike for uploading this gem. Rest In Peace dear Professor!!
It's so hard to find live recordings of this song. Such a shame it's been my favorite rush tune since I first heard it.
8:06 holy shit they brought in heart of the sunrise
It's a tragedy but Neil gets honored in way he deserves it. I even read an article in a German newspaper where I would never expect to see it.
Wo?
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing. I love Rush. I also love Dream Theater. An old boyfriend got me into DT. He used to make CD's for me and leave them on my desk at work back in 2002/2003... I still have the albums. I love "Pull Me Under." This Rush cover is impressive. Neil would appreciate this. He was truly a legend. Thank you for sharing.
🌹
Classy move Portnoy posting this. It must have been hard putting something up with Labrie on it but great performance by all of you
Thanks for uploading this, too bad Mr. Myung rarely in the frame.
"those who dont speak dont get shown" : ) ahhaha
@@nicolas28500 yeah at least he got screen time. this was back when Jordan was new to the band so /...he was still a "scrub" earning his face time ahhaha
Thanks mike! I've always loved the older rush stuff!
Thanks for this. Perfect.
The biggest influence on my drumming, Mr. Peart... which led me to discovering Dream Theater. so thankful for Neil in so many ways!
Why wouldnt they want to cover this? They're probably the only band that could properly
i always loved you guys for doing those Rush covers. the best
Mike portnoy The real dream theater drumer, RIP legend Neil "professor" Peart 🙏
That was amazing... and we all know Neil would love the Who being mixed in there.
I never get tired of hearing this song done by you guys! Thank you for posting. RIP NEP and Love Live Rush
1977 saw Rush live in Atlanta and they played 2112 and most of Caress of Steel. I'm only saying this
as Rush brought a freshness to rock like non other. They were the key, the end, the answer... And they had A Mission...
I’m guessing they didn’t play Fountain of Lamneth, which in still upset about bc the “no one at the bridge” section would’ve been amazing to hear live, especially when they were all young
El mejor homenaje e interpretado por uno de los mejores bateristas del mundo mi ídolo Mike Portnoy
Adiós Neil Peart LEYENDA ABSOLUTA
What a great performance ! To real "RUSH" fans, there is NO better tribute to Neil Peart/RUSH than this !
Great stuff here. If they were not already a great band with original stuff they would go down as the best cover band ever. Their interpretations of other classic songs are unbelievable
Label: you cant play Baba O'Riley
Rush: *looking to other direction*....ok
Awesome gem of 12 minutes 35 seconds immortalized in time.
Thanks, Mike!
"Swept away with the tide

(Through the holes in my hands)
Crown of thorns at my side
(Crown of thorns
At my side ye ye yeah)

Possibly the best cover on the platform
Amazing cover to honor the Professor! Portnoy and Petrucci really kicked ass (too bad Labrie is never at their level!)
Que gran video! Recuerdo hace como 12 años lo vi por primera vez, aquí en RUclips, luego lo borraron y subieron en 2 partes pero sin las partes de The Who. Gracias por el recuerdo.
R.I.P. Mr. Peart
They lack the punch of Rush, but I love that they've covered one of my favourite tracks by one of my favourite bands. Hats off to them.
That segueway into “Baba O Riley” makes me grin from ear to ear!
Saw Rush in 76, 78, 79. Relativity an unknown band until the Internet came alone. Caress Of Steel is one of my favorite albums of all time. The ending of Necromancer is just beautiful!
Rush was an unknown band until the internet? Are you sure you want to stand by this statement?
Beyond amazing! Note: Neil Peart youngest inducted into Drummer Hall of Fame, second youngest: Mike Portnoy!
Playing Drums is not just a question of technique, even though this is essential of course! You also need musicality and heart. A kind of instinct, or superinstinct I would say. Neil was a Master. And a Master has technique of course, but also a big heart/passion which drives him all along his playing. Neil was always putting his heart in all his playing. He was never cold, as many other "technical" drummers... even if they were or are very good! Always fluid, intense, and full of passion. And always at the service of Music. This was, along with his outstanding technical mastery, his very secret I guess. I've always thought that Mike was, and still is, the only true musical heir of Neil, at least in the Rock scene. Not only because of his great talent, but because of his personal musicality and spirit, both so close to the ones Neil had. Mike plays what he likes to play, and the way he likes to play it. Always with heart and passion. As Neil did all along his incredible career. They way they think of drums is basically the same. There is, and there was always a kind of "underlying theme" between them. A special link which comes more from the inside than the outside. And this is why, in my opinion, Mike is the more legit, so to speak, to cover Neil's works!
I couldn’t have said it any better!!
"superinstinct" LOL
There are so many awesome drummers since buddy rich with all kinds of techniques and skill but only one that could be "better" than Neil in my opinion is Mike. I hear Ringo was awesome but to me he had great timing which is #1 thing a drummer needs but his skill level 7 of 10, but many at a 10 but Portnoy and a few others are off the chart. Manchini ,is good but sloppy compared to the precision of Peart and portnoy
Watching again... and again
That part at 4:30 gave me chills. Awesome version of this brilliant song. Some of Neil's best early work on this album IMO. RIP
Is no one gonna mention that super slick "Heart of the Sunrise" transition right after that killer keyboard solo?
This cover checks all the boxes, damn. Thanks for sharing.
my reaction: 😲😁
Great cover of one of my favorite Rush songs. Caress of Steel is so under appreciated. Thanks for posting. RIP Neil, you will be missed but never be forgotten.
OMG...GREAT Interpretation.now I know RUSH will NEVER die................
The ONLY band that does justice to doing a RUSH cover - and the ONLY band I would ever listen to equal time to the boys from Toronto. RIP Neil. God bless you guys.
There's a band called YYNOT that does an amazing cover of "No One at the Bridge" from Caress of Steel (along with so many other Rush classics from the 70's/early 80's and their own material). Their female lead singer sounds like a dead ringer for early Geddy belting out the vox with such unhinged emotion. ruclips.net/video/2bQxXUzGduU/видео.html Hearing the song again rings so true today lyrically with what is going seems to be going on in the world.
Amazing performance. Thanks Mike Portnoy.
RIP Neil "The Professor" Peart
amazing. farewell to a king.
This is one of the best (if not the best) covers I've ever heard by DT
Thank you mike. I wish you can share more videos like this. But.... Yeah, we all know the case.
Have a nice day, mike. 🤘
I just emailed DT to make sure they're OK with me sharing it...fingers crossed they are or else I'll have to take it down
@@MikePortnoyDT1 they should be OK with it. To Honor the legacy of Neil Peart.
Mike you should take Neil’s place for Rush in a tribute concert. RIP Neil forever missed!
I'd pay to see that.
agree after the mouring time and if they would do it. at least 1 song in honor of Neil by Geddy, Alex and Mike P.
Won't happen this was already discussed by Geddy & Alex a few years ago knowing I bet what was going on with Neil & in honor of him they probably won't do it ! I do know Alex has been doing some solo stuff again as well as sitting in & doing session work for other artists and bands so I would assume that Geddy probably will do the same .
@@peteloomis8456 I do hope Alex my hero does another solo album and Ged as well. they cant feel bad now. not going to hurt Rush after they are retired and Neil is sadly gone. Tribute song please
🤣 bridge adapted from "heart of the sunrise" ... and what is that again? finally some song by The Who! quite funny ....lol
Long live Mr. Peart!
It breaks my heart that Neil is gone :(
For some reason the opening vibe reminds me of Zappa's The Torture Never Stops
Como é lindo ver o respeito que o Portnoy tem pelo professor #RIP NP
Goosebumps. Start to finish. How have I never seen this? 9 year old me dropped the record player needle on this track more times than can be counted. The nod to yes is amazing too!
This. Is. Brilliant. Can't understand why the Rush guys were so down on Caress of Steel with gems like this one and Fountain of Lamneth.
Dream Theater acquiring SOUL playing Rush songs. Whatever it takes.
There a song to be made : I'm not a drummer, just a bass player, but what's a bass player without a drummer..mother. RIP Neal. Love you Mike.
@Mike Portnoy. Thanks for this beauty. Pure love.
Rest in Peace, Professor!
the only thing better than this would be to see Mike play it with Geddy and Alex
My favorite band covering their favorive band.
besides being a tribute is epic to be seen Mike you and really the personified musical congratulations
Wow. Bravo. Return of the Prince is one of the best songs ever, especially the guitar lead.
My favorite RUSH album ;-)
And Rush were a three-piece? Amazing.
Wov ... beautiful... caress of steel is the best album of Rush... pure rock and roll
RIP Neil Peart.
I was shocked to learn his passing away LATE.
Thanks for sharing. As tough as it is to cope with the loss of Neil Peart, it warms the heart with the outpouring of support from great musicians like yourself. We are all just one massive group of Rush fans no matter what we do for a living. Thank you!

Thank you for posting this...
RIP Professor.
Like so many of us, I grew up with Rush and Neil's passing hurts.
This recording happened about a year after I discovered Dream Theater and you guys changed not only my taste in music, but my life. It's amazing the impact strangers can have on our lives, isn't it? Thanks so much for sharing this, Mike. Like Neil, you're one of my heroes!
