SMT: Nocturne Hardtype - Metatron (Low Level)

- Опубликовано: 24 дек 2020
- tl;dr: he has the big hp and lots of scary moves
Twitter is bad, don't follow me: / jimsonlytweet1
Rules:
- This is a low level run of zombero's hardtype mod: www.romhacking.net/hacks/3299/
- The aim is to keep XP gain as low as possible without affecting my sanity.
- Hard mode, obviously
- No stat boosting items
- All other game mechanics are fair game!
Hardtype changes:
- HP: 16000 → 27777
- His regular attack now inflicts mute, with a seemingly 100% success rate
- He now has Silent Prayer (Acts as Dekaja and Dekunda rolled into one)
- Tarukaja/Makakaja → Heat Riser (Raises all stats 2 stages. He does still have Tarukaja but I only saw him use it once in 3 hours of attempts, for all intents and purposes this has replaced both buffs)
- He no longer has Holy Wrath
The big one. After the relative disappointment of the Beelzebub fight it was nice to have one that truly tested my limits, even if it did keep me up late on Christmas Eve. Having anticipated what a nightmare this would be I started planning my team for this well in advance (I fused that Hanuman before the Black Frost fight with this one in mind.)
So what's new? In the first phase he disregards Dekaja and Dekunda and instead fires off Silent Prayer at an alarming rate. I keep a buff and debuff up at all times to minimise the likelihood of double Megidolaon. Tarukaja or Cadenza are the buffs of choice to maximise damage and get through it quickly - if he does use Megidolaon twice then Rakukaja isn't gonna save us anyway. Rakukaja and War Cry would be the safest way to get through this part but I already ditched War Cry on Demi, and besides, dying here is not a common problem.
Once the second phase hits he starts using the terrifying Heat Riser almost every round. I minimise his stats whenever necessary and buff mine with the new Luster Candy item. The gems for these can be farmed with Lucky Tickets (flashbacks to DDS2 lootboxes) although it's a slow and tedious process. Hopefully this batch will tide me over through the Diet Building at the very least. Money is no longer an issue at this point in the game thanks to the ludicrous bank you can make in Hell's Vault. I debated whether to go with Dekaja or double Debilitate here, since on paper Dekaja is the better option for this part. However, it's essential that he's fully debuffed when the 3rd phase hits, so keeping his stats down in advance prevents immediate wipes during the transition. Also, he's more likely to ruin your day with Dekajas of his own if you don't stick debuffs on him, and we really don't want to be burning through Luster Candies that fast.
And then there's the final phase. At this point Metatron busts out Fire of RNG most rounds which threatens a kill with 3 hits on a single party member, or just 2 hits if he precedes it with Heat Riser/Dekunda. The only small mercy is that he calms down a little with the buffs giving you more opportunities to pummel him. Most of my wipes were here, and even in this run you get a taster of how badly things can go wrong, but I do finally prevail.
So that's the fight. Debuff like hell, exploit his ice... uh, neutrality, and keep Demi focused so you can land those tasty crits if he gets frozen. In terms of Magatama, I actually think it would be better to go with phys resistance and throw Tetraja stones for Mahamaon to stop surprise crits ruining your day, but I might still want to bag Divine Shot so I stuck with Nirvana. - Игры
Description updated. The song at the start is Alive, the intro theme to DDS2: ruclips.net/video/71Up84h81fI/видео.html
Ay someone actually listens to alive
Incidentally, this fight is probably the one in which Antichthon shines the most in a normal, non-low-level playthrough. Any two demons that have it (such as Trumpeter and any magic-centered demon descended from him) can repeatedly debilitate Metatron with this to counter his Heat Riser spam while maintaining a decent damage output (and it always hits, or so it claims).

Metatron is stylish and has an incredibly kickass theme, but he was a pushover in vanilla. Here, however, he lives up to the hype.

Metatron: *Laughs in Fire of Sinai almost killing Demifiend*
Praise be to RNGsus for blessing me with low damage rolls. Triple Fire of Sinai should definitely be a kill!
Metatron is dead before the end of the year, a true Christmas miracle. Merry Christmas Jim!
11:51 Just now noticed that the battle's first "Fire of RNG" laugh is perfectly timed with the music. An excellent example of just how terrifying that move is.
All those freezes on the last party turn, I could almost hear Jim:
Oh yeah that's really helpful game...
Yeah, ideally you'd set it up so Demi can always have the last turn, but there just aren't enough skill slots for that to be feasible. Later on I hope to set it up so shock/freeze attackers and physical attackers get turns alternately to take full advantage of it.
Dammit, stop teasing me with that DDS2 music
Feels like Catherine with the EDGE-ing that Jim is doing

Awesome content, dude. Happy Holidays!
Christ, you farmed that much Luster Candies. How long did it took?
oh so that skill isnt a thing In nocturne 😔 I came from 4 so Kinda irritated that u have to farm that "skill"
@@YEP753 it's not even in vanilla Nocturne at all, it was added as a item in Hardtype
i think not many know that the only reason this battle went this quickly was because jim had the fastest demon with prayer and null mute. normal players would have had to use the me patra item and then heal, which wastes more than 2 turns because you may not have the best turn order.
so this fight kind of forces you to make a better team even when not doing the challenge.
Yea, always have your Prayerbot at least turn 2 (turn 1 if you're dealing with mind or bind ailments)
Also try to have the main attackers 2 turns apart so you can pass, attack, pass

But where is dante from the hit game series devil may cry released on august 23 2001 by Capcom and Capcom production studio 4 who made a guest appearance in the cult classic jrpg hit shin megami tensei 3 nocturne also sometimes referred to as lucifers call released on February 20 2003 developed by atlus. His inclusion within the game is quite memetic within the smt fan circle online due to a bizzare marketing call to have a part of the lucifers call box art to have a message saying “featuring Dante from the devil may cry series” which is quite comical due to the fact that Dante does not influence the plot much at all and is actually only a minor cameo. So much is his inclusion minor that a remake of the game called shin megami tensei 3 nocturne maniax chronicles edition replaced Dante from the devil may cry series with the character named raidou who is part of the devil summoner series developed by atlus though the first game featuring him was called Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army for the PlayStation 2 released on March 2 2006. I think it would be very funny to see Dante within this run as he is very funny and good.
Dante is literally right there. The guy with the tight tats.

Description, draft 2:
HP: 16,000 --> 27,777
Makakaja (and/or Tarukaja?) --> Heat Riser
Normal attack now inflicts Mute.
??? --> Silent Prayer
(Holy Wrath appears to be MIA)
He does still have Tarukaja but I only saw him use it once in like 3 hours of attempts.
@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe Going by the gem farming you show early in the video, it looks like a single Luster Candy can be acquired for ~30k Macca apiece at minimum, with the right save scumming (or ~22.5k if you sell back the items you bought for the tickets)...
If I did math correctly, at least.
@@steam-powereddolphin5449 Yup. It sounds expensive but you can make well over a million macca per hour from Hell's Vault so money isn't an issue. It's more the time spent scumming (plus just having to enter and exit the shop to buy stuff 30 times per candy is *y a w n*)
@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe I know, right? I've been wishing now and again that you could get a Lucky Ticket _per 1k Macca spent at the shops_ instead of just one for every purchase worth _over_ 1k Macca. It would save *so* much ticket-farming time and even give you multiple prize draws in a row when you buy a Magatama that costs 20k+ Macca!
(And yes, I also did the math on Hell's Vault, but it took me longer to grind to the cap because I'm not as good at collecting the normal coins without hitting stuff. The purple coins give enough anyway, IMO).
Meh, Metatron is nothing compared to Based Angel Mastema.
Mastema would never attack you, he's too trustworthy

Man, you got so lucky with boss being frozen!
Well Bufudyne supposedly has a 30% freeze rate in this mod, although I think the luck stat plays a role in how often it lands.
Happy Law Day!
Defeated by a Hell Thrust, perfect
have you tried unplugging it from the wall?
Hey man, I just discovered Hardtype and just discovered your channel. Loving both. But I have a question. How do you not miss attacks constantly, ignoring agility and luck like that? And they're supposed to have an even larger impact than normal in the mod.
Attack with speed buffs/debuffs wherever possible. Agility is the main factor for physicals and luck for magic. In this particular battle Horus and Cu Chu were the main attackers with Bufudyne and their luck is pretty respectable so they rarely miss after a Debilitate. And it's only worth attacking with Demi when Metatron's frozen anyway to ignore his phys resistance. You are right the Demi's low agility has been a problem in general, often he still has a small chance to miss targets even with him at +2 hit and them at -2 evasion. Once I hit 24 strength for the Gaea magatama the rest of his points will go into agility.
@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe Yeah, I figured buffs and debuffs played a big part in letting you hit. And noticed all the freezing. Still, I'd like to be able to hit with Demifiend without worrying about it in trash fights and such, I think I'll be putting some points into agi and luck. Or maybe just one or the other, I'm tempted to try magic with the changes, instead of the same old phys build. Anyway, thanks for the quick response, and for making awesome videos 😁
atavaka missed an attack in the beelzebub video, whereas in vanilla one suku nulls any chance of missing afaik
I love when monkey flip
Alright, how many attempts did this take?
Took about 3 hours. Most attempts ended right as he was gonna die :( You can see it almost happened here too
@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe Just wondering, what’s your general limit for time spent on a boss before you rethink your approach? Personally I try to find a strategy that will achieve victory within around 3-4 hours for the very toughest of my challenge run bosses, but it’s usually apparent within the first half hour or so if I’m likely to win within that range or if I need to rethink things.
@@Bucketgetter Pretty much the same. Dante 1, Black Rider and this have been the hardest boses of the run by far and each took a few hours to take down. Although I think there is very little more I could've done to optimise my teams (beyond "come back later" for Black Rider and Metatron)
@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe Yeah, I definitely get that with the lack of options for those bosses. As much as I like Nocturne, a lot of the time whether or not you can win is determined at the start of the battle by the skillset and resistances of the three demons you're using. Even when Zombero changed summoning and switching out demons to only take half a press turn, that's a lot less viable when your demons need buffs on in order to survive. You really haven't gotten to use it much aside from Dante and Ongyo-Ki, from what I remember. After fusing the team you need, a lot of the battles just seem to follow the formula of buff, debuff, heal, and attack with the same three demons, and there's honestly not a lot else that can be done.
Those are some of the reasons why I really like the battle systems of IV (to some extent) and Apocalypse. IV is kind of a joke until the optional bosses, but I've really had to think outside of the box for those. I had to use 20 different demons to win a single battle in my no fusion run, and a lot of others took 10 or more demons. Apocalypse is similar in that the demon switching mechanic can really be rewarding if you know how to use it, and I think that it's the probably the best game at allowing a good player to be good.
@@Bucketgetter Demon switching has been mildly useful in quite a few fights as long as I have a spare demon slot that doesn't need buffs too much, I used it a little more often than that but I guess the fights you mentioned were the main fights where it was truly important (needed it for the Aciel meme strat too to switch Arahabaki in/out so I had spare press turns for Taunt or MP heals)
I would kill for a Baton Pass move that allows you to switch demons without losing buffs. It would still take a skill slot so I don't think it would be too broken, but it would really allow full exploitation of the switching.
Haven't played IV:A, dunno whether to make that or SJR the next SMT I play

Doubt this message will be read, but does anyone know what the edit Jim Reaper uses at 6 seconds to 18 seconds? I’d love to know since I’ve been wanting to finish a video for a while, but I require that exact style of editing… I use davinchi Resolve 18 for anyone who can assist me.
Hi, appreciate this was 3 weeks ago so maybe you’ve figured it out by now - in case not it’s just a case of overlaying various clips with one another and having them pan and zoom as needed
Wouldn't it be better to give someone Dekaja instead of having to fire two Debilitates each round?
Metty is too powerful at +0. He needs to be at -2 to be at least fair. At -2 Heat raiser only goes to +0 While just being at +0 means Metty can go to +2 and become extremely dangerous
What Aly said. Well Dekaja would technically be better for the second phase, but you absolutely need him at -2 going into the final phase. Also I think he’s more likely to use Dekaja himself if he isn’t debuffed, and Luster Candies are more valuable than Great Chakras.
