Rules:
- This is a low level run of zombero's hardtype mod: www.romhacking.net/hacks/3299/
- The aim is to keep XP gain as low as possible without affecting my sanity.
- Hard mode, obviously
- No stat boosting items
- All other game mechanics are fair game!
Hardtype changes:
- Baal HP: 13000 → 32000
- Beast Eye → Dragon Eye
- She no longer seems to have Holy Wrath
- She now has Phanta Rhei (Mega AoE Force dmg)
- She now has Heat Riser (Raises all stats 2 stages)
- She now has Antichthon (Heavy almighty dmg + lowers all stats 1 stage)
- Bael's Bane is now almighty
Ose/Flauros HP: 6700 → 12500
Oh, I like this one! Baal gets a bunch of upgrades that turn this from a joke fight into one of the better endgame bosses. For starters, skipping the Hallel was never a realistic option here, as she still summons them after taking just ~6500 damage (and they will Diarahan her any time she goes below this threshold). Bael's Bane can no longer be blocked, but its targetting is at least predictable. She always goes after the lowest level party member who isn't already a fly. This generally allows us to manipulate her to target a certain demon, replacing it with another low level backup demon while we resurrect it (hey Uzubae, we've got one last job for you). Also her first action is always a scripted use of this so it's best to start out with some other low level flybait in the lineup. Sorry Arahabaki.
The most essential affinities here are at least one instance of both expel and force repel. This will ensure her round is immediately cut short whenever she casts Mahamaon or Phanta Rhei, which is really important with the crazy number of press turns she can get with Dragon Eye. I also made a new Sparna with Void Expel, and I decided to give it Mediarahan since I figured having Demi as our main healer in this fight is not a good idea when he already has so much other stuff to do.
It's best to trigger the Hallel phase with the gang already focussed so you can deal as much damage as possible before the inevitable buff removal. Ose & Flauros have many moves between them including AoE spells of each element, AoE phys, shields and buffs - but more than anything they like to spam Dekunda and Dekaja respectively. In fact this phase went by amazingly quickly as Ose never got a chance to do anything, and by the time Flauros started getting turns it was all too late. Things all seemed to be going smoothly and then... the last few rounds happened. I had to make a snap decision at the very end, but I wasn't entirely confident it was the right one and I still don't know if that final crit mattered.
My only criticism of this fight would be that Bael's Bane is a little too random. My initial attempt died because she turned my entire gang into flies over the course of a couple of rounds and there's no real way to deal with that at any level, since the only cure for fly is death. The Heat Riser/Megidola spam on the other hand would be more survivable at reasonable levels, so I'm down with it.

Okay, so I got curious because of the description and decided to add up the damage Lady Dante had taken between Ose's Diarahan and your final attack. At that critical point, she had taken a total of 30,745 damage, meaning it would take 1,255 to finish her off. The final hit did 1,888 with a crit, so one would assume it'd do about 1,258 without it, but of course that depends on a damage roll in that alternate scenario.
Even after all that, I'm still not entirely sure the crit mattered. Huh.

After this, the Mithra and Black Rider fights... it's safe to say Megidola is the true villain of this run.
And for the "nice music sync" squad, the whole bit at 2:38 where she summons the Hallel was pretty nice

I knew I'd done about 6k since she entered her low HP stance, and the best I could do to try and salvage was Dekaja stone + heal which still left me vulnerable to further Riser/Megidola spam or her turning Wu into a fly. So I decided to go full YOLO

Hardtype makes this go from the worst of the reason bosses to the best, it’s a joke in the original if you know what to expect.
Yea. In vanilla, if you got Masakados, the only move Baal Avatar can hit you with is Megidola. And if you're a high enough level, you can even kill her in a single turn and skip the Hallel phase entirely, which is something I did

But when she got her reason and kinda became baal avatar she ended up losing her left arm

I'm not sure. I remember being surprised that Phanta Rhei didn't OHKO Uzume after she got turned into a fly, so it's possible that Anti-Magic was still having an effect there?

Has anyone been able to mute Ose in this fight? When I use Makajam Rock on Flauros it says "VOID" as expected, but when I try it on Ose it says "MISS". I have used 99 Makajam Rocks on Ose but he didn't get muted even once.
EDIT: After looking in the debug mode, the letter besides his curse modifier is B. That means he can be damaged by curse attacks but cannot be muted or poisoned, right?
Yeah I'm afraid that means you can't mute him. Kinda weird that he can be damaged by curse skills at all at that point. IIRC there aren't even any single target damaging curse spells so it's difficult to see where you could take advantage of this... I guess Soul Divide would hurt him? That's no use here though. Do you think solo Baal will be possible at all then?

Luci is prob most likely a pretty anti climatic fight cause Jim is doing repel strat so Demi damage is not gonna be a huge factor

But how'll he manage to get the repels, btw? Since he already battled against everyone and there's not enough exp to get all repels for Lucy. Or do you mean the repels on the summons?
@@jptiz1 Repel on the summons, demi is prob gonna be a portable item bot in the fight, maybe get a few free divine shot in if the situation allow
The reason why Jim isn't using Iron Claw is because Hardtype removed it from its respective Magatama

Depends, but I tend to test play ahead a bit so I don't spend hours fusing useless teams. I learned this the hard way vs. Pale Rider when I made a team of Zandyne users only to discover his affinity changed and he repels force in hardtype :')
Also some I knew what to expect from either from having watched BuffMaister's streams or people warning me in the comments

Damn, that's... uh, a problem.
Fly status also increases your damage received modifiers a lot so it could be very difficult to tank those Megidolas. And your own damage modifiers become truly pitiful. Maybe with Magic Mirror spam you could pull it off? Idk if mirrors still work on flies, I only know that it disregards innate repels.

Well she can't cast Dragon Eye repeatedly, so the most she can get to herself is 4 actions after the Hallel are dead.
The most threatening thing (assuming she starts fully debuffed) would be 2 Heat Risers followed by 2 Megidolas
Sorry, I meant when the two are still alive and the Hallel uses Dragon Eye, but I realize now that would just give her 3 turns tops.

@@JimReaperSaysUnsubscribe Flauros has Diarahan in the original game, though I have left him alive by walling out Baal from doing any moves that don't make her lose 2 Press Turns (you just have to hope she misses Megidolas but at +8 agility advantage that's pretty fine), but here if Baal's Bane always hits and is almighty, that's not gonna be an option.

upon a bit of a closer inspection, i realized that flauros actually never got a turn in that video where it could heal baal after ose died
it casted dekaja twice, before the 6.5k threshold, and then never got a turn again since baal goes first
it does have diarahan in vanilla as stated

zombero really did screw up this one with Bael's Bane being almighty and UNDODGEABLE, a move that punishes the player so much shouldn't be undodgeable at least the targeting can be manipulated but still.
I think it's okay, I like how it forces you to strategize differently to normal by having subs on the bench. I just don't think she should be able to use it multiple times in one round. If she makes her way through the team to Demi the fight is over.
tetraja can cancel out its expel weakness and makes it manageable, it's how i got through the fight

@@si-level To be fair, you're experiencing the game from a low-level standpoint, when the game's formulas have been redesigned so that they scale better with levels. When played at the appropriate pace, it's less damage sponge, more not wiping out bosses in no time at all.
You don't really notice the numbers, except for the four devas, who actually are horrible long boss fights that are mostly about having the appropriate teams to fight them and surviving for 10 minutes than actually having a thrilling fight.
