  • Yemen has been at war for more than six years. The healthcare system has been decimated, famine looms, and millions are struggling to cope. But few observers have paid attention to the country's escalating mental health crisis that is accompanying this humanitarian catastrophe. VICE News gains exclusive access inside the few psychiatric hospitals still operating in Yemen today, finding patients both physically and chemically restrained. Such dire conditions reflect the severe lack of resources for Yemeni people, who the world seems to have turned their backs on.

The nurse that had to turn away the man suffering from psychosis- the way she spoke to his friend, she seemed so angry, even heartless. But as soon as the door closes behind them and they leave the hospital, she is in tears. She was never angry with them- she is frustrated to the literal brink, and it breaks her heart to turn people away, but she has no choice. That is an unimaginable stress. And that scenario likely repeats itself several times a day, every single day.
How she and the doctor at the psychiatric hospital continue to come to work every single day and try to help those they can- there is not enough gratitude in the world for them. And sadly, they will never know all the people seeing these situations see them as the selfless, deeply giving, and truly heroic people they are.
War and adversity brings out both the best and the worst in people. Thank goodness for all the best.

I'm not American but I've seen a lot of Americans sharing a particular quote from Mr. Rogers about the people who are heroes during bad times.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” Rogers said to his television neighbors, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.""

Belgium is one of five countries that allow doctors to kill patients at their request, and one of two, along with the Netherlands, that grant the procedure for people with severe *mental illness* such as *severe chronic depression* . Also Recently Australian euthanasia activist Philip Nitschke and Dutch designer Alexander Bannink created a suicide pod. Called the “Sarco”, short for sarcophagus, the 3D-printed machine comes with a detachable coffin, mounted on a stand that contains a nitrogen canister. ~
      ~
“The person who wants to die presses the button and the capsule is filled with nitrogen. He or she will feel a bit dizzy but will then rapidly lose consciousness and die fast and painlessly,” said Nitschke, who has been dubbed “Dr Death” for his work to legalise euthanasia. ~
      ~
The “Sarco” is a device “to provide people with a death when they wish to die,” Nitschke said.~
      ~
“This is a situation where one person chooses to press a button … rather than for instance standing in front of a train.”
“I believe it’s a fundamental human right (to choose when to die). It’s not just some medical privilege for the very sick. If you’ve got the precious gift of life, you should be able to give that gift away at the time of your choosing,” Nitschke said.

@@JD-jz5rr I believe that i also believe when a hospital has to shut down. The aggressive mentally ill patients secretly get disposed of. Same thing happens to random refugees that end up somewhere so the government has to build a camp for them till they can figure out where to integrate them and especially which ones they deem safe and not crazy. They slowly take small groups away so know one notices and just gun them down. Are world can be very barbaric. Back to killing the insane, even if you had the legal right to slaughter all the mentally ill in the world, it wouldn't do anything cause one thing I learned is we all lye somewhere along the broad spectrum of mental illness. Even though scientists are beginning to understand more of the brain. They still don't know how to properly treat it and the strange thing is only a true ill person can understand another ill person. They say some of the best psychiatrist are real paranoid schizophrenic psychopaths themselves.

I think it's a crime that a few trillionares hoarde enough money to help most if not all the world, but they just don't. The inmate's speech was guarded and they were quite calm and gave the most basic facts about themselves in spite allegedly being crazy and tied up. This likely means they get in trouble for complaining.

The doctor, the nurse and the mother are all genuine people when giving a response to a question about getting mental help… I honestly felt her answer before she even said it… I’m devastated and heartbroken the Yemeni people are suffering needlessly from the constant day in and day out of war… Everyone with little money and help suffer more when the richest people are out there causing chaos just for their enjoyment… No more wars… let there be peace… and my the doctor, the nurse and the mother as the rest sleep well and peacefully at night

@@kaym7704 i don't believe that and i don't think you do either. all it takes is for people to create a more powerful weapon. after the invention of the nuke, we had almost 80 years of peace. people only respond to the stick or carrot and with that logic wars will stop existing in the near future if people create a terrifying weapon. not to say there won't be small skirmishes or insurgencies but no massive scale wars.

@@ibrahimhassan711 we have that weapon already, the atomic bomb, it's a weapon of peace, nations who own that weapon do not fight wars against each other any longer, they learnt to live with what they have since the risk of losing what they have outweighed the risk of what they could win in such a nuclear war.
Unfortunately, those who have the weapon of peace are against everyone having it because then they lose the biggest market in the world, the weapon market which thrives from non-nuclear wars.

It’s not senseless for the LEGITIMATE Yemeni government to take responsibility and do its JOB by protecting Yemenis from foreign influenced GANG attempting to take power in Yemen by force! TRUE Yemenis see what’s happening in Lebanon with iran supporting hezbolla and we Yemenis don’t want that garbage in our country with iran supporting the houthis leading to yet another failed state in the Middle East!
houthis had a chance to be a part of the flourishing democratic process that was born post dictator saleh’s departure but chose to take power in Yemen by force via iranian support now they will either eat dirt or go live in their host country iran as houthis WILL NEVER BE ACCEPTED BY YEMENIS!!!!!!!!!

I just wish we could all somehow like, sign a card or something to send to him, so he has a tangible piece of human support for the particularly difficult and heavy position he is in. ❤ feeling for everyone featured in the video

i feel for the mother, what a horrible question to ask her "some people would say how could a mother chain her son" how dumb of a question to make her feel horrible to choose to protect her self and her family. i know what its like to live with an untreated schizophrenic man, and its the most traumatizing thing, mentally and physically destroying to the people living with him. the fact that this mother chose to chain her son in their home rather than kill him and abandoned him; speaks volumes of her love for him even after everything he's done to her! i wish i could give them all the money they need to get treatment but all i can offer is my prayers for now. may Allah protect the families and the mentally ill and soon provide them with the relief they need.
