  • Medical tourism to Mexico from the US is huge, with an estimated three million inbound medical travellers in 2020 alone. Medication is cheaper in Mexico than the US, and you can buy most drugs without a prescription.
While most people are able to find the care they desperately need, some are also buying cheap unregulated medicine without knowing it’s fake. The ingredients can be completely unknown and in recent years, the DEA have seized counterfeit medication laced with the deadly opioid fentanyl.
Reporter Tania Rashid explores the murky underworld of black market medication in Mexico & LA.

“The black market exists because of the overpriced healthcare system in the US.” I’ve worked in healthcare for a decade and this is the most brutally honest statement I’ve ever heard.

ok but the black market is made up of more than just what you’d get from a underpriced healthcare so therefore this is irrelevant

    • @TravisMcMurray

I’m a bit confused by your response. That quote regarding the black market was made in reference exclusively to pharmaceutical products. If you’re arguing that the black market, in a general sense, is made up of more than products and services related to healthcare, you are correct. Certainly anything can be offered on the black market as an illegitimate or illegal sale. What I’m not understanding is the “underpriced healthcare” reference. Help me understand your logic. I’m also having trouble with the part of your response that says, “…so therefore this is irrelevant.” Exactly what is irrelevant?

@@TravisMcMurray ok let me break it down. you said the black market EXISTS because of OVERpriced healthcare. now with that information alone to go off of let’s fix it now the health care is not overpriced but wait.. the black market still exists. that’s why i said this is irrelevant.

@@ellayak Black markets usually form for many reasons, ease of access, pricing, taxes, etc. Reducing healthcare costs will reduce the black market, at least for non addictive substances. Black markets must be crushed at demand, not supply. Or else another will just pop up again.

When I was a heroin addict... I hated my stuff being laced with fentanyl because it was just a fast high and it went away quick. Yeah it got you really high, but if you have a habit, it's really hard to overdose, But then there's kids that haven't used and they think it's a Roxy 30, never to wake up again. It's pretty scary. I'm so glad I left that life behind. I've been sober for three years, I have a good relationship with my higher power now. All opiates did for me was put me in prison for 3 years, in jail for 5. It's a horrible life, and very addicting... I always wanted to feel good. I never knew that eating healthy and working out makes me feel way better than any of those drugs ever did.

She clearly gave him the 10mg diazepam tablet and he tested it and the test even said 10mg of diazepam. So it was exactly what it was sold to her as and 10mg is a normal dose for diazepam. Xanax/alprazolam comes in a bar not a tablet and they didn't even test it. I almost got physically sick when I read the caption that said he had a PHD. For the last 30 years you could go to a doctor and say “it hurts here” they would give you pain killers. Now that they realize half the country is addicted the governments bright idea is to take away half of the people’s prescriptions away. Leaving them to either go through withdrawals or do whatever they can to fill their habit. Instead of putting money into actual rehabs to help people get off the drugs.

Facts bro. Big Pharma needs to be held accountable. They told doctors that less than 1% of people using opioids for pain relief got addicted. And pushed extended release Oxys. When people would go through withdrawl, Big Pharma would tell doctors it’s called “pseudo-addiction” and it’s “not real addiction, their body is dependent on the drug, but there’s no psychological addiction,” so any time patients were exhibiting symptoms of addiction, doctors would think it’s not real addiction. Meanwhile big Pharma KNEW it was addictive to 100% of people, and if you take opioids consistently and long enough you will be dependent on them. But they would compile data of doctors writing prescriptions, and give kick backs to doctors who were prescribing tons of Oxys, and send sales people to doctors who weren’t prescribing Oxys to explain to them that there is “minimal danger of addiction, and they’re safe to use.”
85% of people who are now addicted to heroin/fentanyl/opioids in general, were originally prescribed by a doctor! They were trusting their doctor to help them with their pain, and now they are labeled a junkie by society. It’s fucked!

If you take a whole bottle of pain killers or any prescription pill you will have a likely chance you will die from it. The interviews were all fake, you could tell they way they were set up, sounded like she was acting a script and was absolutely as calm as could be in Infront of criminals with automatic rifles and they were allowed to film them walking in back corridors. Lighting was good amd she was wearing nice clothes and jewelry and was very vulnerable.
People involved may talk to you but not on camera and definitely not let you come film inside a black market warehouse, they know they and their files would be killed.
The info was the only thing that was partially accurate and even a lot of that was wrong. Cartels are not putting fentanyl in fake pills that people don't know they are taking but buying for $2 a pill, they want repeat business and s profit. They sell fake pills to people that cost them 15 cents a pill to make and they sell drugs packaged as medicine for people wanting to buy drugs and they sell that for a lot more money.
This is what garbage journalism gives you and a lot is misinformation and dramatic shocking but fake interviews and videos

It does one thing - it does not get a person high. An addict looking to score pills would be unwise to buy or take these because nothing would happen. It only gives the bare minimum of insight into fentanyl and the reporter was absolutely reckless. If it weren’t for the fact they knew she was naive, she could have potentially put herself or other innocent people in danger.

Dental care and antibiotics are so much cheaper there. Go to one of the large, well-known drug stores for safety. Those other drugs sound crazy unsafe. Sadly, medical and dental care in USA is outrageously too high.

Well when the opoid crisis happened . Her doctor gave her a month to come down of that medication . I never seen someone suffer more . They made people who had legimate chronic pain have to go to the extreme .

She has PKD so they removed her left Kidney and they sent her home with Tylenol after getting her stomach cut open like a zipper, but "hang in there" They refuse to prescribe here in R.I. because of the opiate crisis. I lost my job because I needed to take her to dialysis every other day until we could arrange transportation. Now she's on deaths doorstep and I set up a GoFundMe acct. Well it is concerning but, as a Mexican I should say: You have to be on a high level of irresponsability to buy medicines in a tianguis (street market) here in Mexico City, even the poorest, the most ignorant people go to a Big Chain of phramacies like Farmacias Similares, Farmacias del Ahorro, San Pablo, etc., there they get a prescription by an exploited doctor, but a real licensed doctor. And they buy medicines that are inspected by COFEPRIS (the mexican equivalent to the FDA) medicines whose patent have been released, if the patent has not been released they say it to you. The first pharmacy the guy in the video visited looks plain crappy, I wouldn't buy anything there just to avoid being robbed, let alone buying fake medicines. No licensed pharmacy would ever, ever sell to you individual pills in a bag, you have to buy the jar or the box, it's forbidden to sell individual pills. The pharmacy shown at the end of the video I can say it's legal, the quality of the medicine you can get maybe won't be the best, but you can be shure it wouldn't contain Fentanyl or rat poisson. A legal pharmacy in Mexico would ask for your prescription with the signature of the doctor and would require you an identification (voter ID, driver license, professional license, passport) to buy any Bezodiacepines (Xanax, Valium, etc.). They would call the doctor to ensure he/she prescribed that medicine to you. I beg to Americans to not think this country is as shitty as you think, we have lots and lots of problems, but we aren't as lawless as you think, if you ever came to Mexico for medicines take into account what I say, get a medical checking and prescription in Mexico is not expensive, you can verify the doctor is licensed in the website of the Dirección Nacional de Profesiones, you enter the number in your prescription called "Cédula Profesional" or abbrevriated "Ced. Prof".

the worst thing about fentanyl is that to get on suboxone you have to wait like 4-5 days or you'll send yourself into precipitated withdrawal which you would rather be dead than go through. if doctors would actually help people by giving them benzos to get through those early withdrawal symptons until they can get back on their suboxone, a lot of people would stop doing it right now. many people keep going just because they're afraid of those precipitated withdrawals.

YES!!! Dude exactly why I haven't been able to get clean yet myself. I don't get high when I smoke em, just do it to not be sick so I want to quit but I can't because of this! I even waited 3 days and took the subs around noon on the 3rd day and went thru precipitated withdrawals...shits worse then covid or anything u can imagine. Years ago they use to give you SUBUTEX for the first week when you start as it doesn't induce P.W. but apparently they either don't or I actually heard they're not allowed too anymore. Makes no sense. & since you can't comprehend the pain from WD and the craving from addiction till u go thru its so hard to get people to understand and get us the help we need
