I'm showing this to my middle school ancient history students tomorrow! It's so wonderful to hear the great works of literature as they may have sounded back then!

nope as it's incorrect one even more that later as heeta and oomeega are pronounced not just as so called long it's just german and english traditional artificial kind of pronunciation
Very interesting reimagination of Ancient Greek Music, very different from the rest. Actually in an ancient mode without the tempered system and with microtonal inflexions. Excellent
This video reminds me of the time when I were learning Classical Greek, especially Plato, Aristotle,and Socrates.Adding these I were learning Odusseia of Homer.That time had passed away over half acentury, but I was a young dreaming man.

The last line shouldn't be there, since it's not sung and is actually by the author who quoted this poem in his work "On the Sublime", not by Sappho.

I don't understand why this video doesn't have a few thousand more views, or several hundred more likes. This is a beautiful (and passionate!) rendition of one of Sappho's best works. Thank you for bringing this out into the world. This makes the modern world a better place, just to know that Art exists, Art is being created, Art is being remembered and recalled into existence!

@@nevaehhamilton3493yup! she’s talking about getting lovesick over a girl in this poem and she mentions sensual experiences with women as well, she was definitely attracted to women. The term lesbian originated from her.

This is absolutely gorgeous, but isn't it phainetai, instead of painetai?
I'm probably pretty late, but in Ancient Greek the phi was simply an aspirated p. It doesn't make a ph or f sound like we are used to nowadays. Same with theta. It makes an aspirated t sound instead of a th sound.

Shouldn't they be written differently?
I think it's a difference in how you say the letter. It's not an f, sound, it's more of a softer version of a hard p.
In English, if you end a work with a consonant, like p, it sounds a little different than it would if the word would start with a p. Depending on your accent, the p in pie, is different, than the p in stop. Say the word pie, and stop, and examine the differences in phonetics between those two same letters, said in a different word.
This said, I don't know which is the right way to write this word in question :)
@@AdamSchmitz what you are saying is particularly the case for Aeolian. No spiritus asper in this dialect.
@@andreasc5433 Yeah there was no spiritus asper there were however the consonants Φ Θ Χ which were pronounced f θ x. The aspirate value is pure conjecture and doesnt even hold water:

For those who aren't aware: The poem allegedly talks about Sappho's love for another woman, mentioning her jealousy of a man sitting next to said woman. Though there is a lot of debate about this, Most people think its about that.
does anyone know a version like this on Spotify? I find this beautiful but most versions on there are over exaggerated I find

This is from Book 1 of the Alexandrian edition of Sappho's poems.
The title should be spelled Phainetai, since the first letter is a phi and not a pi.
Is that movie?
Is this hypophrygian, diatonic genus?
It is "Phainetai", not """Painetai""", F!F!F! for Sappho's sake! "It seems to me that that Man

What language is it ? Cause if it is ancient greek me that is from greece i didnt understand a thing. This isnt ancient greek ..

@@r3naki δεν είναι η άποψη μου...έχω κάνει έρευνα κοντα 6 μήνες τώρα, γιατι και εγώ όταν πρωτοάκουσα αυτή την προφορά πίστεψέ με μου πήρε αρκετές εβδομάδες μέχρι να την αποδεχτώ.
